Following following but I’m a total lurk on main, I bookmark most Reylo posts I like and I’m not open wrt the ship. LMAO I used to stalk several blogs without having an account for like, a year or two because I didn’t want to get sucked into the time-consuming world of social media. So whenever I sent an ask to someone I’d screencap the answer and save it to this huge PNG collage for posterity.

You don’t need to be sorry, do whatever makes you feel comfortable. I get kinda pissed off whenever I see whiny posts from older Reylos acting like stealth Reylos/post-TLJ Reylos are fake fans or trying to guilt trip them about only coming out when it was “safe” while they were out there “on the front lines”. Like, sorry man, some people get on the internet to unwind, not get stressed out over dumb shit that people take way too seriously. Just cause you’ve accepted the risk that someone might try to dox you or something over fanart doesn’t mean everyone else has to, you know?

But I reiterate that I haven’t really had to deal with any of that bullshit since going full-Reylo myself. If you find a big enough block-list you’ll probably be able to mitigate 99% of the drama, especially since it’s really only a handful of big name instigators like l3sbianrey spewing bile for their followers to eat up. If they can’t see you, they’ll have nothing to attack you with. I also block pretty much anyone I come across who’s expressed a dislike of Kylo/Reylo. Even if they’re capable of being civil about it, I’m not interested in hearing slander against my trash son and they’re not interested in scrolling past my Reylo posts when they’re looking through other relevant Star Wars tags, so I’m doing both of us a favor by ensuring neither of us have to see each other.

When you’ve had a lot of exposure to the SJ side of Tumblr, you’ll start to pick up common abusive tactics they use to instill control over people who are unsure of what side they want to be on.

The most common type I’ve seen was projection. It’s when someone wants to remove all accountability from the actions resulting from bad traits they hold by attributing those bad traits onto you. And I’ve seen it in this form the most: Somebody could go into hysterics about the supposed ‘self-hate’ you have because of certain political views you hold (that don’t apparently “line up” with your minority status), but a quick scroll down through their blog would either reveal those typical self-depreciating posts, how much they hate/want to kill themselves, or how nobody else likes them.

They tell you not to talk to certain people they perceive to be bigoted based on their very broad definition of one. If that doesn’t work, they’ll resort to toying with your emotions. I’ve talked about this before, but they’ll insist that nobody else (outside of the minority group they’re apart of) cares about them. Basically it usually goes like: “If you associate with them, they’ll drop you in a heartbeat when you don’t become useful to them anymore, but since we’re the only people who supposedly care about you, you’re better off staying with us no matter how much abuse we throw at you.” They feel threatened when anyone, especially other minorities who are expected to have camaraderie with them at all costs, point out faults within their mindset so they resort to this particular tactic.

There’s also the “Preemptive Defense” strategy which a lot of narcissists love to use. I didn’t know there was an exact word for this, but I’ve seen this one play out way too often on here. It’s when someone says you should trust them right off the bat because they’re a “nice person”. But on here it comes in the form of trusting someone - especially believing whatever they say without question - because they’re a minority of some sorts. Because they’re a minority and therefore inevitably ‘oppressed’, everything they say, they say with good intentions (or everything they say is right) even if it comes in the form of overtly abusive language.

And you can’t really do shit about it cause, “You gotta listen to them or else you’re speaking over them and denying their right to a voice!”

Another attribute that narcissists share (and lots of people on here) are subjecting people to “smear campaigns”. They control how others see you by making themselves out to be the good person while you’re the toxic one. A smear campaign is a preemptive strike to sabotage your reputation and slander your name so that you won’t have a support network to fall back on lest you decide to detach and cut ties with this toxic person. They may even stalk and harass you or the people you know as a way to supposedly “expose” the truth about you; this exposure acts as a way to hide their own abusive behavior while projecting it onto you. I think I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve seen this happen here.

They deliberately misrepresent your thoughts and put words in your mouth too. They’ll try their damn hardest to rephrase whatever you say to make your opinions sound like garbage. This gives them a sense of power as everybody comes running to their side and away from yours because they purposely misinterpreted the core argument you made in your post. One of their favorite approaches is finding something slightly off with your wording and using that to twist the point you made while moving the goalposts at the same time. I made a post that said ‘Radfems will call a transwoman a man because they raped somebody as if men are the only ones capable of rape’ and I got swarms of replies talking about how I didn’t care about the rape victim affected (which they ironically proceeded to deny his identity by referring to him as a ‘’female’’ because he was a transman) because I happened to bring up a different issue at that time. Either that or I was a rape apologist.

Once they lose that sense of control – because you disagree with their thought process – they’ll either try to strip of you of your identity or use fear-tactics (i.e: nobody cares for you except for us) as a consequence of not conforming to their political views. “If someone’s reaction to you setting boundaries or having a differing opinion from your own is to threaten you into submission, whether it’s a thinly veiled threat or an overt admission of what they plan to do, this is a red flag of someone who has a high degree of entitlement and has no plans of compromising.”

Then comes the oversimplifications and generalizations of complicated matters. They’re left-wing versions of reactionaries, they don’t bother to look at things from different perspectives; they instead apply their own bias where they see fit. They have no concept of nuance and dismiss people who point this out.

Boulant mentions that Buzot accused Saint-Just of embezzlement and that Saint-Just was further accused of speculation when he bought national property, especially when he supposedly acquired national property in 1793. Do you happen to know anything about these claims? Because I have read quite a few biographies about Saint-Just and this is the first time I have come across anyone even implying that he was not 100% honest when it came to money.

The moment I read this, I thought about Olivier Blanc, the resident conspiracy theorist. He is big on proving that Montagnards had a lot of money and were all involved in speculations with property to amass a great wealth. His sources are highly dubious - it's not even Thermidorized view in the strict sense of the word; the man simply does not know (or pretends he doesn't know) how to analyze a source. For example, he finds a slander pamphlet that someone wrote randomly about someone and take it at face value. (Like when he took a pamphlet allegedly written by Tallien about being the lover of his father's master at face value.) It doesn't mean that these sources are useless - they can tell us a lot about what people at the time gossiped about and what tensions/slanders existed, AND there could be some truth in some of them, but they need to be approached carefully. (It would be like claiming Marie Antoinette definitely took female lovers just because revolutionary slander pamphlets said so.)

Another Blanc's claim was that the Duplays were super wealthy and had properties all around France. He provides as a "proof" the death certificate of a Duplay boy who died as a baby outside of Paris. It is clear to anyone that the child was given to a wet nurse, which was a common practice at the time. But nah, Blanc claims it's the proof that Duplays had property outside of Paris! (Even though the death certificate gives Paris as the parent's address). Stuff like that. So nah, Blanc's cannot be trusted on his word. He is good at digging up sources, but he doesn't know how to interpret them. It is very concerning to me that Boulant, the author of the newest study on SJ, not only cites Olivier Blanc (his ramblings from Geneanet, since no reputable historical journal would publish it), but thanks him in the foreword! So, all this stuff is taken directly from Blanc, and is therefore highly unreliable, to say the least. Is there some truth to it? We know SJ bought some property around 1791 (early 1792?) in order to have enough property to be eligible to be elected. At the time, there was still the requirement that you had to be rich enough to become a deputy. He took a loan to buy this property, but in the end, it was not needed because the wealth requirement was removed from the 1792 elections.

I don't know anything about other stuff. I cannot claim that it's absolutely untrue, because we have no proof. But SJ was more broke than anything, and I guess the idea of buying nationalized property is to amass wealth (which is what Blanc tried to prove all this time). No trace of this wealth is found (same for Robespierre, Le Bas, Couthon, etc.) so I guess Olivier Blanc has to work harder to prove his theories. What he offers so far is not a proof.

I don’t think love triangles are a bad trope necessarily.. when executed correctly it can symbolize the MC being forced to choose btwn two paths. like : “a quiet happy life with sunshine love interest? or a fun adventurous life with mischievous love interest?” and what they choose will speak to their personality and values, but only if the MC doesn’t actually lead one of them on ofc. I’m not the biggest fan of the trope myself but the idea that now love triangles instantly make a book bad is odd

The love triangle trope has overstayed its welcome for me personally, but that’s not to say there aren’t good ways of executing it. I’ve said on here before, if the two love interests are meant to represent two diverging ideologies or lifestyles for the main character, then it can thematically work. If the book is about romantic angst, then it could work very well. I think the author also has to have a good understanding of emotional manipulation and cheating before they start writing so the characters don’t come off as assholes. The author also needs to know when to cap the angst so their book doesn’t get consumed by the love triangle (unless it’s a romance novel and the main conflict is the love triangle).

For me, love triangles don’t immediately make a book bad, but they do annoy the shit out of me because for the most part they’re not done well, they’re just thrown in for the angst of it all, they make the fandom hellish, and the characters’ drama is petty. I especially hate love triangles when the author has clearly chosen a side and slanders one character (SJ/M, Mafi, Clare, and Meyer are examples of writers who have done this). It’s just terrible writing. Also, personally, reading about love triangles emotionally stresses me out. I highly empathize with characters, so I find myself lamenting over the character who is disfavored by the narrative (or being so annoyed with the other character that I wish they would die, which is a nasty feeling). Believe me when I tell you I’ve lost more sleep by thinking about love triangle drama than I have over scary movies. So it’s not necessarily that love triangles automatically degrade the quality of a book, it’s just that many of us associate love triangles with poor choices on the writer’s part, generally asshole characters and fandom, annoying angst that distracts from the main story, and extremely tired tropes. I usually won’t put a book down if I realize it contains a love triangle, but I usually wouldn’t pick it up if I knew about the love triangle beforehand and I wasn’t already invested.
