in terms of character inspiration? i def look at thel'vadam from the halo series for what i have in mind with shade. a character that climbed in the covenant's ranks, but ultimately suffered a grave betrayal and punishment by the very people he served because of one fatal mistake. later realized he was blind to the religious leader's true intentions and decided to rebel...
