The Sports Festival

Here’s another one for my Villain!Izuku AU that won’t be tagged for Villain Month despite using the prompt “Quirk.” Unfortunately there are basically no canon villains in this one, unless you count Endeavor *glare at that flaming trashcan*

The day of the UA Sports Festival, Izuku made the executive decision to watch the event in person. He justified it to Uraraka by saying he wanted to observe contestants the cameras might not focus on, but in reality it was to avoid Tomura for a while. His brother had become insufferable since the failed attack on the USJ, especially since he blamed Izuku for the failure.

To be fair it had been Izuku’s plan, but he really didn’t need to be around a grouching Tomura when his failure against Kachan was still fresh.

Still, this was a wonderful opportunity. He’d bought tickets at the last minute so he was stuck in the nosebleeds, but that was just fine with Izuku. He had some decent goggles, and he was less likely to be recognized that way. He wasn’t wearing much of a disguise -- just a green hoodie and some sunglasses -- and was going to be relying on his inconspicuousness to keep the authorities off his back. He did have his gun and a knife hidden in his hoodie, but he’d rather not use them. He was able to get to his seat without incident, so the disguise must be doing some good.

The festival took place over the course of 3 days, one for each grade. Usually the volume of spectators gradually increased each day, with the 1st years attracting the least amount of people, but this year more people showed up on the 1st day than usual. This didn’t affect Izuku, but he did wonder whether it was because of his attack on class 1-A.

It was likely that the world was expecting more from that class now, and he wasn’t sure how he felt about that.

Anyway, the opening ceremonies were pretty much the same as every year. As soon as the announcer invited Kachan up to give the oath, Izuku knew that his former bully was going to do something ridiculous. He did feel somewhat vindicated when all the other students yelled at Kachan, so that was a plus.

The first event was an obstacle course. Izuku took note of a few quirks being used creatively -- Mineta’s strategy certainly wasn’t very sporting, but one couldn’t argue its effectiveness -- but overall was underwhelmed by the display. He already knew a lot about the capabilities of 1-A, and most of the other classes were not going out of their way to show off. Izuku wondered if this was an actual strategy or if they just didn’t have that impressive abilities.

Well, they are only 1st years. They have 3 years of schooling to get through before they’d be expected to act like pros.

The final obstacle was a minefield. All of the students either walked around them carefully or used their quirks to glide across, which was pretty standard reaction. Izuku kind of wished there were more creative students among them, since controlled explosions could be very useful, if you were daring enough. Even Kachan, who should know better than anyone else how to use explosions, didn't capitalize on the mindfield's potential. He just used his own explosions to fly over the mines, not daring to touch them.

As such, it wasn't surprising when the student with the most powerful quirk -- Todoroki -- won the race, with Kachan as a close second. Izuku was happy to see his old rival humiliated, but was still disappointed the first event ended without anything interesting.

The second event was a cavalry battle. Izuku had high hopes for this one, since he could gauge the student’s teamwork. An individual hero was only as powerful as their quirks and their training, but a team could fly high or fail spectacularly depending on the group dynamics. Izuku could get all the information he wanted on quirks and individual stats using the school’s database, but he could only judge the future heroes’ teamwork by watching events like this. The way students chose teams might also showcase their analytical skills, but he didn’t have high hopes on that front.

They were only 1st years, after all. He’d figured out a long time ago that people with strong quirks usually only focused on their own abilities and didn’t consider how they could work with other quirks. UA did a decent job of breaking them out of that habit, but it took time.

Izuku tapped his pen on the edge of his notebook. I wonder what it would be like if I could give these future heroes tips on working together.

He quickly pushed that thought out of his mind and focused on the cavalry battle. No point in dwelling on what-ifs.

Izuku was pleasantly surprised by the cavalry battle. With 1-B’s poor performance in the obstical course he’d dismissed them, but both they and a few gen-ed kids were the true stars of this event. True, both Kachan’s team and the group supporting Todoroki remained in the top two spots the entire time, but the other top spots were a fierce battle between the rest of 1-A, a few noteworthy 1-B teams, and this one group in complete synergy headed by a gen-ed student. The top four ended up being team Todoroki, team Bakugo, the team headed by Monoma from 1-B, and the group with that tired-looking gen-ed student named Shinsou.

Looks like the 1-B students deliberately hid their powers to give themselves an edge, Izuku thought. Not a bad strategy, but it can only be used once and defeats the publicity purpose of the sports festival. Then again, they’re getting 2 more chances to show off like this over the course of their high school career, and not many people usually watch the 1st years. Plus, the one-on-one battles are where individuals can shine so they could have been counting on getting to that point which wasn’t smart since only 16 students get that far…

“Uh, you okay kid?” a nearby man asked. “You’re muttering to yourself.”

Izuku jumped. “Oh, I’m so sorry! It’s an old habit! My teacher and brother keep telling me to stop it, but it always slips out when I’m concentrating or overly enthusiastic about something.”

The man laughed. “It’s fine, kid. I was just worried about you.”

I should probably get away for a while; he might try to start a conversation and ask questions. “Hey, mind letting me out? We should have some time until the next event and I want to beat the line to the bathroom.”

The man graciously let Izuku out of the stadium row. Izuku quickly gathered his stuff -- just a few spare notebooks, his laptop, and his wallet shoved in a backpack -- and headed down the stairs, looking for a secluded place he could review his notes.

I need to look back over my stats on those 1-B students. I should also check the school’s database for info on that gen-ed student… I shouldn’t have focussed only on the hero courses; there’s usually a few kids from gen-ed who get bumped up to heroics by the end of the year.

The closest bathroom was jam-packed -- apparently, everyone else was taking advantage of the break before the main event. The same was true for the bathroom on the next floor down, and the next one. Izuku kept descending, looking for somewhere he could work in peace. Even an unlocked supply closet would be fine, but he didn’t see any of those.

Eventually, Izuku reached the bottom of the stadium, where he’d entered. He still didn’t have a place to work where nobody would see what he was doing. He did see another set of stairs, going even further under the seats.

Maybe there will be less people down there, Izuku thought as he walked down the new staircase.

He was right; there were significantly less people down there. The dark hallway would have looked abandoned if it wasn't so clean. It reminded Izuku of the setting in a horror game, where the player was led into a false sense of security before the monster popped up in a jumpscare. There wasn’t enough light for him to read his notes, but his phone had a flashlight and his laptop was fully charged.

Izuku turned a corner and sat on the floor, firing up his laptop and pulling out his notes. The light from the screen gave him just enough for him to make out his handwriting, but only when he tilted the notebook a certain way. He found the notes on 1-B as quickly as he could, but gave up after a while since he could get the same information on his computer anyway. He had a trojan horse installed on the school’s database, so it didn’t take much for him to hack into it again.

He was still shuffling through the information he needed -- Mind Control certainly explains how that one team was able to be in perfect sync -- when he heard a raised voice echoing along the hallway.

“You need to stop this childish rebellion! Use the quirk I gave you already!”

A much softer voice replied, but Izuku wasn’t able to catch what was said.

“Don’t you dare talk back to me, boy!”

That’s Endeavour, Izuku realised. He put away his laptop and stood up. What’s Endeavour doing yelling at someone at UA’s sport’s festival?

Izuku knew he should have just left. He had all the information he needed. Endeavour was a pro hero, and wouldn’t hesitate to arrest someone like Izuku, especially after the role he played in the USJ attack. It would be in his best interest to just leave and blend back in with the crowd.

Without even thinking about it, Izuku’s feet moved, taking him down the hall in the direction of Endeavour's booming voice.

“You are my successor, Shoto!” Endeavour said. “You were born with both powers in order to surpass All Might!”

“I will not be what you want me to be.” The softer voice replied.

Izuku peaked around the corner. Endevor’s back took up most of his view, but he could also see a familiar boy with two-toned hair.

Why is Endeavour shouting at his son Shoto?

“I am your father, and you will do what I tell you!” Endeavour shouted.

Shoto’s face was impassive, a stark contrast to his father’s emotional outbursts. “You’ve controlled everything in my life. How long I have to spend training, who I get to spend time with, even what I eat. My school and my career path were both decided for me, as your masterpiece. You may be able to control all of those things, but you don’t get to decide how I use my power. I will become a hero without using my fire, just to prove that I can.”

Endeavour stormed off, walking through a doorway behind Shoto. “You won’t make it that far. You need my fire, it’s the only way you'll surpass All Might.”

“I don’t care about surpassing All Might. I just want to get away from you.”

Endeavour continued to stomp off, leaving Shoto in the darkened hallway.

Izuku breathed a sigh of relief.

“Who’s there?”

Izuku’s breath caught. Did he hear me?

Shoto walked forward and turned the corner, staring at Izuku. “I don’t think anybody but the contestants are supposed to be here.”

“R-Realy?” Izuku laughed, feigning innocence. “I’m sorry, I just got lost looking for a bathroom…”

“It’s fine.” Shoto’s face remained impassive, not giving Izuku any hint as to whether he was suspicious of not.

Izuku tapped his fingertips together. Common sense said that he should leave well enough alone, but… “It sounds like you two were having an argument. Do you want to talk about it?”

Shoto turned away. “It’s nothing you need to concern yourself over.”

“Oh, okay.”

The hallway was silent for a few minutes, until Shoto spoke up. “I refuse to use my fire in battle. He doesn’t like that, since I’m supposed to be his successor.”

Izuku frowned. He had noticed that Shoto hadn’t used the fire half of his quirk in either the USJ or this Sport’s festival, but he hadn’t thought about it much. He figured it was because ice could be more versatile, it could contain a villain without much injury, or just personal preference in training. He didn’t realize it was a conscious, controversial decision. “Why don’t you want to use your fire?”

“It’s his quirk.”

So, is it some family trouble? Izuku wondered.

Shoto sighed. “I hate my father. He’s obsessed with surpassing All Might, but knows that’s not possible with his own limitations. So, he decided to train me to do it for him. He’s been training me with my quirk since I was four years old.”

Izuku sucked in his breath. Wow, I thought Endeavour was terrible for how he used excessive force on low-level villains, but this…

“Mom tried to protect me, but… It was too much. She hated him, hated being in that house, and eventually reached a breaking point.” Shoto touched his face, where an ugly, red scar marred his features. “She said my left side was unightly, that it reminded her of him, so she took the tea kettle and…” Shoto didn’t finish his sentence, but he didn’t have to.

Fuck. “Do you hate your mother, for doing that to you?”

Shoto stopped, contemplating Izuku’s question. “No, no I don’t think I do.” He sounded surprised, like he’d only just figured that out. “I understand that it wasn’t really her fault, that my father drove her to that point. Plus, she was always trying to protect me. I guess it’s not fair to hate her for one act of anger, especially compared to the years of abuse we’ve both suffered under my father.”

Izuku thought about the people in his own life. Sure, Tomura and Sensei both were cruel to him at times, but compared to the years of bullying he received from Kachan… It wasn’t that bad, right?

Right?

Well, at least he still had some good times with Tomura-nii, while he couldn’t remember why he put up with Kachan for so long anyway.

Stop thinking about that. “I’m really sorry all that happened to you. I can understand why you don’t want to use your fire, but are you sure you want to keep handicapping yourself?”

Shoto frowned. “What do you mean?”

“Well, most quirks dealing with extreme temperatures have a side effect on the user’s body temperature. I know that Endeavour gets overheated if he’s pushed too far, and I’ve noticed your body was accumulating ice during the last two events. I imagine that using both powers would allow you to keep your body temperature under control.”

“... You’re not wrong. That is the reason my father deliberately married a woman with an ice quirk.”

“Exactly!” Izuku nodded. “I know you hate your father, but I'm sure there are less self-destructive ways to get back at him.”

Shoto didn’t say anything.

“I’ll tell you what,” Izuku pulled out his phone. “How about we exchange numbers? I’d like to help you get away from your father, if I can.”

Shoto pulled out his own phone, firing off a string of digits Izuku added to his contacts under the name “Shoto Todoroki.” He then sent a text to his new contact.

Me: Hi! I’m Izuku Midoriya.

Me: Go ahead and add my contact info.

Shoto’s phone vibrated and he read the text. “So… Your name is Izuku?”

“Yep! Feel free to text me at any time. I’m homeschooled, so you don’t need to worry about interrupting me during class.”

Shoto nodded. “I’ll keep that in mind.” He pocketed the phone again. “I… Well, thank you for listening. It was nice to finally get that all off my chest.”

“Well, isn’t that what friends are for?”

“Friends…” Shoto frowned. “I wouldn’t know. I never got the chance to interact with kids my own age growing up… and I think most of my classmates are scared of me.”

There was a pang in Izuku’s chest. “I kind of get where you’re coming from. Until about a year ago, I hadn’t interacted with anyone other than the people in my house very much. It’s nice to have a friend on the outside.”

An announcement rang out through the stadium. Izuku couldn’t hear the exact words due to the echo, but he was sure the next event was about to start.

“Looks like I need to get to my seat if I want to see the action, and you need to ge ready for your fight.” Izuku started walking towards the lit doorway, but thought of something else he wanted to say.

He turned around, and although Shoto’s features were obscured by shadows, Izuku noticed how his body stiffened.

“By the way, would you do me a favor and kick Katsuki Bakugo's ass?” Izuku asked. “He doesn’t deserve to be a hero.”

Shoto walked forward. When the light reached his face, Izuku noticed how determined he was. “I’ll do that, so long as you promise to do everything in your power to help me get revenge on my father.” His eyes bore into Izuku’s own. “Including whatever you used to get into the USJ.”

Izuku froze. He recognized me!

Shoto was up the stairs and on his way to his classmates before Izuku could even think of stopping him.

Izuku took a deep breath. It’s fine. If he warns the heroes, I’ll just hide until I can go home.

Still, he couldn’t stop looking over his shoulder every other minute as he walked back to his nosebleed seats.

He continued to worry about who Shoto might tell. That is, until the Final Battle of the 1st year’s tournament, when Shoto Todoroki won 1st place by using a giant fire blast against Katsuki Bakugo.

The 2nd years weren’t particularly impressive. Izuku took a few notes on how those students had developed since the year before, but otherwise considered the whole day a waste. He should have stayed at home and helped Uraraka train her quirk.

The 3rd years were also more of the same, with one key exception.

Mirio Togata.

Izuku already knew to keep an eye out for the big three thanks to web gossip. Tamaki Amajiki fell out of the running early on (Izuku suspected it was stage fright) and Nejire Hado exhausted herself in the first round of the tournament, but Mirio Togata continued to distinguish himself.

Izuku knew that Mirio participated in a work study that would have improved his fighting abilities, but to go through such a dramatic growth…

No, this isn’t natural. Something else is going on.

And so, Izuku watched Mirio closely. Marked his stats, his changes, his moves. Eventually it became clear that it was mostly Mirio’s physical strength that had improved so drastically. Sure, his technique and super moves had evolved, but it was his strength that gave him the edge in all these structured events.

During the final battle, Mirio didn’t even use his permutation quirk, just his fists. It was like watching a pro boxer or even…

All Might.

Izuku was watching every detail of Mirio’s fights, so he was probably the only person who picked up on the faded, yellow energy surrounding his entire body. It shone just a little bit brighter when he was about to attack, and followed him even as he perminated through things. I crackled like lightning, and appeared to be the source of this new strength.

During the final match of the tournament, Mirio’s opponent was almost able to push him out of bounds, but the yellow energy grew brighter than ever before, focusing around his arms. Mirio released the energy in a magnificent punch strong enough to not only send the other fighter out of bounds, but produce a wind blast that affected the entire stadium.

There is no way that was the result of normal strength training.

Izuku continued to analyze Mirio as he stepped off the stage, nursing a mysteriously broken arm. He noticed a spinely, blond man approached the boy and embraced him. It could be a congratulatory hug from a proud relative, but their features were too different to be a close relation.

Izuku taped his chin. What are you hiding, Mirio Togata?

Izuku locked himself in his room for three days following the sports festival. Both Kurogiri and Uraraka tried to drag him out to at least eat, but had to leave plates of food outside his door when he wouldn’t budge. Even Tomura was worried, from what Izuku could make out through his door.

Still, he didn't regret it. Izuku couldn’t handle distractions right now. He had some idea where he went wrong with the USJ incident -- essentially, underestimating the students because they were only first years -- but the mystery of Mirio Togata was the issue he spent most of his time on.

First he looked through the boy’s history -- every grade, every sports festival, every status update from his time at the Nighteye agency -- but couldn’t find any clues. He went through family history and their connections -- the blond man from the sports festival wasn’t anywhere close on the family tree -- but still came up with nothing. No predisposition to mutation quirks, no connections to questionable experiments, no support personnel who may have snuck something in.

It’s like Mirio Togata spontaneously developed another quirk.

Izuku was about to contact Sensei and ask if he’d given a UA student another quirk without telling anyone when he remembered there was another person capable of passing on a quirk.

Could it be…?

His research then pivoted from finding every detail about Mirio Togata’s life to uncovering a certain Pro Hero’s secrets. He found data on the number of incidents resolved by each hero per year. Most fans on the hero forums attributed the sudden data change six years ago to lack of media coverage, but Izuku knew better. He watched hundreds of amateur videos on a particular hero to compare the forces of a punch. He catalogued everything from more than six years ago to present day and looked for trends.

What he found was so obvious he should have noticed it a long time ago. He would have, if he hadn’t been deliberately avoiding the relevant information.

All Might’s time doing hero work had been steadily decreasing over the last five years, but his overall strength had remained the same until 10 months ago. Then, both his time as a hero and his overall strength started decreasing rapidly.

Combine that with what Izuku had noticed at the sports festival, as well as their mutual connection to the Nighteye agency, and there was only one conclusion to be made.

Izuku wrote it in his notebook, clear, bold letters describing a world-shattering truth:

Mirio Togata has inherited One For All from All Might.

Izuku leaned back and took a deep breath. All Might had passed on his power, and Mirio Togata would one day fight All For One.

I should tell Sensei. He needs to know.

Izuku knew this was true. If Sensei found out that Izuku had figured this out and didn’t share the information, he’d be mad. All For One had been gravely injured in his fight against the eighth user, so he needs to start preparing now if he has any hope of surviving the ninth.

But… For some reason, Izuku didn’t want to share this. It was a piece of information he’d slaved to uncover, and he didn’t want to give it up just yet. This information gave him a miniscule amount of power over All For One, and he wanted to savor it.

Or maybe it was something else.

Whatever the reason was, Izuku closed his notebook, put it up in his desk, and left to eat dinner with Uraraka, putting the new discovery out of his mind.

[Translation] BUBKA (Feb’19) Goto Rara interview

It’s been a (long) while since the last time I posted on tumblr.

To be honest, I didn’t plan to release this translation upon her grad announcement but...well, here I am. She’s the type of going all out on everything she does anyway,so I’m happy for whatever choice she made. In this interview, she said she loves living a busy life. Maybe she’s found that university life is busy enough lol (or maybe planning to study abroad??) Enjoy reading!

The reason of “gap”

- It’s the first gravure shooting after you came back.

Rara: Thank you so much! (clap)

- Your expression is somehow…

Rara: Has it changed?

- I guess it looked pretty relaxed.

Rara: It was fun! I was really looking forward to it. It was a shooting session and I was also the only one there, I thought ‘I wonder what it feels like?’

- It was also the first time for the photographer to shoot for this magazine. Felt so frantic (laugh)

Rara: Though it was her first time, she conveyed her heedfulness well and also concerned if it went as what she planned. I really look forward to how it will be published.

- We think that it’s quite good. Well, you came back on stage on Nov.6 after half year of absence, but wasn’t the feeling different from before?

Rara: I was very nervous since it was a long time, but beyond that, I felt sorry for members that they need to remember new position as I came in. So, I was worried how everyone would think.

- And how was it actually? What did they think?

Rara: There were some who seems to have it tough but still said “welcome back” to me. I’m glad. There were also some members that I meet for the first time (laugh)

- You were apart only in that period of time. How did you spend your days?

Rara: I went to school and went to cram school as it is on my way home. For weekends and summer vacation, I went to cram school all day. Though I passed university’s AO entrance exam, I also thought of it in case AO is futile. The pass rate is also not much different from general entrance exam. So, I studied like I was going to take general entrance exam.

(T/L note: AO (Admission Office) entrance exam = the admissions office of a university decides who is admitted based on the student’s application, interview and an essay test.)

- Like an ordinary high school girl.

Rara: Very ordinary (laugh)

- How about your consciousness of being “SKE48’s Goto Rara”?

Rara: None. But, even when I’m in SKE48, I’m not so conscious about it. That’s why…(laugh)

- Hahahaha

Rara: I don’t mind it at all

- However, we think that there must be something different between an ordinary high school girl Goto Rara and SKE48 Goto Rara.

Rara: Umm, of course there was always the sense of urgency. Going to school in the morning, getting out of class early for work, going to work and getting back home late at night, then going to school in the morning again. Since it was like that every day, so without SKE48, maybe the sense of urgency had disappeared. But, instead of that, I need to study. So, it was another kind of difficulty.

- Exam was certainly tough. And in SKE48, you also had difficult time, right?

Rara: Yep, yep.

- (Matsui) Jurina-san was also on hiatus.

Rara: There was also 10th anniversary.

- That’s right. When you came back, is there any point that makes you think SKE48 atmosphere has changed?

Rara: Umm, I guess it hasn’t changed. But, I heard from senior’s opinion regarding the movie “Idol” that there’s a gap (of view) between early gens and later gens towards SKE48. I was like “Ahhh…”

- “Ahhh…” (laugh) I watched it, too. In that movie, the so-called “early gens” are the ones who decide SKE48’s direction, right?

Rara: Yeah.

- The movie was portrayed that the aiming direction should be equally decided by SKE48 as a whole.

Rara: Yeah.

-About this, actually, I wonder if the gens like Rara-san’s gen and the later gens would feel constrained. I became a bit worried.

Rara: Umm…how should I put it? But, everyone has their own dream, everyone has their own thought about the future, it’s separate. I think it’s different in each individual. It doesn’t have to be all the same. For me, I really love SKE48 that everyone becomes one when performing a live performance. So, when it comes to live performance, there are no such things like “gap” or “individual”. We did it with the thought that ‘I will not lose to seniors’, with the same feeling as them. We enjoy just as much as them.

- “feeling” or “the feeling of a gap”, of course it’s not what we can see with eyes, especially, for the receiving side.

Rara:Yeah, right.

- This is difficult, though (laugh)

Rara: The longer I stay in SKE48…The more I think that seniors really put their lives into it. Talking about the weight (of the feeling they have for SKE48), I think it’s absolutely different. Well, we have different way of living. Therefore, if someone tells me “(the feeling is) different”, then it certainly is different.

- I couldn’t agree more.

Rara: For example, giving that there were 2 choices, as the time passed by, it became as 1. The weight (of feeling) would get heavier, right?

- This is such a substantial conversation, talking about ‘Is this the only way?’ ‘Isn’t it so?’

Rara: Yeah. Since I still haven’t watched the movie so I don’t know what was being said there. I wonder whether that is “the feeling of a gap” or not. But from my point of view ‘even though there are a lot of differences, do we hold the same feeling when we work as SKE48 or perform lives?’ I thought to myself. I don’t think we are losing to seniors on this point.

- Working in a group called ��SKE48’, performing live shows and lightening up together with fans, all of these feelings have never changed.

Rara: Even those other young gens, I think the feeling of fun hasn’t changed. I’m also like that.

Things I noticed

- You are having fun, everyone is also having fun because it’s “Rara”, right?

(T/L note: Rara’s name contains the word “fun/enjoy” )

Rara: Yes (laugh). However, up until now, I have thought that it’s fine as long as I can have fun. Even in theater stage performance…because I’m a shy person, I couldn’t make eye contact with fans. Is it called response? Right? I’m really not good at it. Since I couldn’t look them in the eyes, I always look far ahead.

- You were staring far ahead although it’s theater (laugh)

Rara: It’s embarrassing!! But, the things like ‘not looking because I’m shy’ or ‘enjoying it’, I think maybe it’s my own satisfaction. It may sound extreme, but even in handshake events, I would wear the outfit I like rather than the one that would please the fans. I am who I am. It’s like I don’t want to be tainted. When fans told me something, I would go “yeah, yeah…but!” However, once I tried to pull away from it, when I thought that I want to fulfill my dream, the power from fans that are supporting me is definitely indispensable. I began to think that I have to return it properly to those people.

- Because there are people who support you, you keep being an idol. Something like that?

J: It's been a very busy day but I got a lot done! Did some shopping for some cute new fashions 💞

J: I bought some cute skirts and some lovely blouses and a cute pink backpack to go with it 💕 I'm in love with larme kei at the moment which is a cute fashion in Japan!

M: Wow, so how long has you been interested in Japanese cute fashion?

J: I've been interested in it for years but I didn't have the courage to try it out until now. Larme kei fits my tastes the most!

M: Oh, so is it the first time you are buying those clothes?

J: Kind of. I've got bits and pieces but this is the first time I'm actively shopping for that particular style.

M: I see. No wonder I didn't know that you have an interest in Japanese cute fashion, haha! So Jenny, you just released a single, Fallen Rose. Can you please explain the meaning behind this song?

J: I wrote the song about times when I was younger and would admit my feelings but they were not reciprocated. Sometimes it was because they liked someone else which was sad. So I wanted to write about an unrequited love ❤️ I think people can relate to it a lot. I love to write about real things.

M: True, I agree with you. What I heard, most songwriter prefer to write about themselves. It makes the song more realistic and gives it more feelings.

J: It really does! I like listening to songs that the singer has been through. It makes it more honest as a song ❤️

M: Yes, or the song the we can be able to relate to. I actually think you have done a very great job, since you have released three original songs now. You are probably the only Crystal Rose member who has released solo songs, so do you have any tips for those who want to do this amazing job like you?

J: I would just say you have to work very hard to make a song. Always work hard making the song and always make it sound true to yourself ❤️ And have fun with it!

M: Thank you Jenny! That sounds like a great tips for us all! Keep on fighting for our dreams! So since when did your dream as being a singer start?

J: I guess I've always liked singing. Then I started watching performances of my favourite singers back then and I loved Britney Spears and her big shows. So it was my dream to be just like her and perform on the stage! 😃 I was 13 when I first started writing songs and I always promised I would sing songs I wrote myself. I made a promise to myself! I wouldn't feel true to myself if I sang songs written by other people.

M: Wow, so what kind on music genre do you like? Do you have any genres that you want your songs to have or can it be all kinds of?

J: I like all sorts of music! One day I love rock music and then the next day I love pop music ❤️ I want to sing songs in different genres.

M: That's cool! I actually like this view of yours. Since we are in a Japanese inspired group, I wonder if Japanese music is your favorite kind of music or do you like other languages' music as much as you like the Japanese music?

J: I love Japanese music and I listen to that the most! However I love following a contest called Eurovision. Different countries in Europe compete with a song representing each country and the song voted the best wins! Some of the songs are sung in different languages and it's cool to hear it!!

M: So since when did you start to listen to Japanese music?

J: I was about 13 when I first started listening to it. I found most of it on YouTube!

M: Expect being a singer, do you have other dream occupations?

J: I would love to do acting but I do it now anyway! Haha! However as a career I would love to be a teacher and teach acting!

M: Yeah! You have mentioned about the acting jobs before. You were major in it at the university, right?

J: Yes I studied acting for 3 years at university. It was a lot of fun and I miss it a lot ❤️

M: In the future, would you like to work as a singer and actress in UK or would you like to move somewhere else for the career?

J: I do plan on moving to London when I can to try out acting professionally. London is the best place for it in the UK! I am saving up money for it!

M: Wish you good luck with that! Hope you can move to London soon and get more acting jobs! I remember you told me that you would like to work as a stage actress. Do you still prefer stage acting over movie/TV-series acting?

J: I like doing both but the stage is so exciting! ❤️ When you do acting in film you can do the same lined and shots over and over again and it can get boring. It's cool to watch it back but I love living in the moment of my character and their emotions so I prefer theatre more.

M: Oh I see. You mentioned that you also would like to work as a teacher, so which ages do you want to teach?

J: I would love to teach teenagers! They would be very passionate and understanding about it at that age. I want to inspire them early in their lives!

M: Teenagers? Do you mean the college students?

J: Yes! And the years of what they call high school in the US and secondary school in the UK.

M: In which subjects?

J: Acting! But teaching history would be fun too.

M: Wow, I also love history, haha. Have you thought about becoming a teacher in the future or this might not be in your plan at the moment?

J: I'm going to a college next month to sign up for a teaching course to be qualified.

J: Just two years! I will be 25 then!

M: Yes, you have! What was the reason that made you join Crystal Rose from the beginning?

J: I always wanted to join a net idol group! When previous groups before Crystal Rose held auditions I wanted to join but I felt like I wasn't ready! But with Crystal Rose it felt like I was ready. I think I made the best choice as we've made amazing music and I've made amazing friendships! ❤️

M: Yes you definitely had, haha! Do you see any difference between Crystal Rose back then and Crystal Rose today?

J: Back then it was still a new thing and I guess we were the second net idol group that debuted with original music ❤️ Since then a lot of talented groups have followed. I feel like we've really grown to influence other people to follow what we do! I think it's amazing how we inspire and support each other!!!

M: Yes, true! I would like to see the net idol community is growing bigger and bigger. Another difference between now and then is that we or at least some of us are able to perform LIVE, which is extremely cool.

Guided Writing Intervention activity

Summer, I can not wait to go back home and see my family. I am very excited to go back home and see my sisters. I also can not wait to go back home today. Like to my apartment so i can get some alone time or even just so I can relax a bit.

The fact that I will get to be around people who love me excites me. I miss my mother and her cooking so I am also excited about that. I also can not wait to spend time with my sisters because I love to see them grow and learn and I really feel that I need to be more involved in their life to guide them and so forth.

Being with my sisters makes me feel good. I love to spend quality time with my family. I also love teaching my younger sisters, for my older sister, I love teaching her about ways to better enrich her high school experience and so forth. For my baby sister, I love to read to her and take her to museums. In essence, I am a mother figure for my sisters when my mother is not there.

Although I do love spending time with my sisters, especially my older sister who is in High School, I feel that me being away from them might be more of a learning experience for both of us. My family has depended on me for a very long time, and I am very much aware that although they are struggling without me, they are learning to survive on their own. As for my sister, I know that if I were around her too often I might be compelled to try and tell her what is “best for her” and so on so… being away from my family might actually be really good.

I think this question is the most compelling because it allows for people to make the distinction between teaching someone something (which can be helpful) and doing something for someone that will make them dependent on you and thus can be sort of detrimental to that person when you are no longer around.

My gut is telling me that although it is important for 1st gen students who have younger siblings to guide them, sometimes the same advice does not apply to parents who are dependent on us. As for my mother, she is now older and has many things to worry about, although I would like to get her to learn how to speak english and use technology and so forth, I know that such things can be overwhelming and I certainly do not want to overwhelm her with information.

I: I would probably need to learn more about the connection that 1st gen students have to their communities/families and why it is that students like myself, face conflicts like these. I also feel that I might need to research more on Latinx parents and how modern technology/society seems to leave them behind and thus leads them to rely on their children for simple tasks. Finally, I might also want to research topics on children translating for their parents and find the connection there.

J: I am refocusing this question to try and give a platform to students who have to deal with such conflicting identities. I feel that as a first generation student myself, I can bring lots of insight to this topic because obviously, the transition to college has not been an easy one for my family. I also feel that it is important to look at why many parents/ students from marginalized groups tend to have a hard time in institutions that were not necessarily built to meet their needs.

How do I love this manga so much? I have no idea. I’m not even near high school age anymore, and yet the plot (and tbh, sometimes its ridiculous nature) always gets to me. I’d read more about any aspect of this canon, and if you want to bring in any other characters, and leave others out, feel entirely free to.

Post-canon would be great, but anything goes really. Focusing on just one character would be terrific. Having all of them would be great!

Kumiko has adventures with another class, or her minions! Does she continue with being a school teacher? Maybe she starts leading the Yakuza group, and still goes to school to teach her kids manners, and morals, and how to fight the system?

Shin goes to law school/Africa/some place, but gets lost on the way there! Will he come back to Yankumi? Will he eventually lead the Yakuza group?

Fujiyama Shizuka doesn’t get why she’s the one without the beautiful student toy-boy, and tries to find one herself, and instead falls in love with, idk, the new female teacher? one of Yankumi’s brothers? the new janitor? Or she watches and cackles a lot as Yankumi and Shin date, and then maybe found a Yakuza orphanage, and/or marry.

Kuroda Ryuuchiro and his quest for the rightful heir to his Yakuza group! How does he feel about his granddaughter running around with the police chief’s son — does that bother him more than the whole student thing? Does Shin really inherit the Kuroda family group? Does he become a Yakuza lawyer? Or does Yankumi make him stay away, or maybe Kuroda makes them stay away?

I ship Shin/Yankumi but gen is delightful also.

How does Shin convince Yankumi to have sex with him? Is he getting kidnapped left and right before they actually get together because all and sundry already think they’ve been doing each other for years?

If they are already in an established relationship, how does Shin deal with Yankumi’s students (especially when one of them develops a crush)?

I have no problems about depicting violence, or graphic criminal activities, but please keep the violence perpetrated by the nominated characters within the spirit of the manga? I like to root for morally ambiguous characters, but not if they are truly evil.

I love this music video! It’s so silly and fun! It is here, if you want to watch it yourself, but basically, people are fighting each other with music instruments to a jaunty tune, set in the Wild Wild West.

Basically, fighting with music! Foiling dastardly plans! I want to read more about this! And anything goes, really. If you want to focus more on one character, or want to show this from an outside perspective, either would be great.

Lowkey, I’m really a fan of rival-dynamics, and love to ship enemies, so bringing a lovestory between Durango Black and the Violinist would make my day. Or if there’s a dynamic like "You are the only one allowed to catch me"? —Perfection

Maybe they know each other from before? Maybe there’s epic discussion about different ways to fight each other with music (I’d be into reading about that!).

Okay, I’m not even vaguely sorry. Here’s my confession: I ship all of these with each other, as pairs, or as threesome. I’d read them writing spite!fic, or rather spite!poetry, about each other, though! Or a zombie!AU, in which they are all stumbling incompetently around the dead suddenly among the living. Or maybe they turn out to be surprisingly competent at killing/evading zombies! (I’d expect nothing less from Percy Shelley who seduced people on graveyards, tbh)

Hey — at least they knew of each other! I am into the really very dysfunctional relationships with each other, here. Who is to say they wouldn’t have been very happy with each other in various constellations? Lord Byron seemed to have detested Keats — or at least thought his poetry as "mental masturbation" — I’d dig them in a rival relationship, that suddenly develops into a sexual relationship. Maybe even romantic? (Definitely romantic in the original sense)

And I can definitely see Lord Byron condescending down on Keats for his poor upbringing, without being aware that this is what he is doing, and Keats so not having that. And Percy Shelley with his continued efforts into giving all his money to charity while having the luxury to seduce women and traipse around the continent!

How about an AU in which Keats doesn’t die and joins Percy Shelley in Pisa (and for some reason Lord Byron is there, too — I will not read this for the historical accuracy, believe me)

Percy Shelley wrote an elegy about Keats, and said this when he invited him to Pisa: "I am aware indeed that I am nourishing a rival who will far surpass me and this is an additional motive & will be an added pleasure." Added pleasure? (He means fucking! says me) I am just very into rival relationships that turn sexual or more.

Look, I’m just here for Lord Byron and Percy Shelley seducing a reluctant Keats — and Keats maybe anchoring them a bit down to earth. Or various combinations.

I am not into the long-term effects of drug use and the suffering thereof, but if you want to mention it, that is totally fine. I wouldn’t want it glorified.

Miss Marple - Agatha Christie

I am a fan of Miss Marple. I, too, have lived in a quiet town where you can see into the abysses of the human condition :D

I’d love to read something that lead her to the person we know her as, maybe when she went to the girl school in Switzerland? Maybe during her time in the cypher division, during the war — maybe the cypher division was really a cover for Miss Marple’s spy activities for the war office?

I’d also love fic about her as we know her: spending time in St. Mary Mead’s and solving crimes, quietly knitting her nephew another sweater. Holiday themed fic! Somebody keeps stealing the geese for the holiday celebrations!

Honestly, I’d also really like to read about her in a relationship, especially one that people wouldn’t expect of an elderly woman. Did she have a youthful indiscretion with the prime minister, and now that he is widowed, he visits her again, and Jane’s nephew is entirely shocked by the whole thing?

Was she maybe in love with a woman the whole time? Did she quietly retire into a cottage with her best friend, and they have a romantic relationship with each other?

(Or crossovers! It would be super interesting if Miss Marple knew a wizard from the Harry Potter universe, or maybe she’s a squib or a with herself? Or maybe she knows Phryne Fisher, or Lord Peter Wimsey!)

Island of the Aunts | Monster Mission - Eva Ibbotson

Characters: Dorothy (Island of the Aunts)

Look. This is one of my favourite books. I would read absolutely anything about every single character— I choose Dorothy, simply because she’s my most favourite, but if you want to write a story where she’s not the focus, I’d still be ecstatic.

That said, omg, Dorothy. I love her (and her wok!) and I would read countless stories on adventures she had while going off of the island in a rage to be angry at polluters, or hunters of endangered species, or both. I like that she seems to be the most competent in dealing with outsiders, even though usually she rather likes to resort to violence.

So! Pre-Canon, or Post-Canon, whatever; either would be great!

How is the work on the island? How is Dorothy dealing with her piranha farm? Maybe she decided to pursue some other, even stranger, protection against various and sundry? Does the Kraken return to the island?

How does Dorothy deal with the mermaids? Is she tolerant of their foibles, or is it a similar relationship to the one she has with her sister Betty, that is: polite bewilderment?

How does Dorothy feel to be suddenly the responsible one, who didn’t kidnap children and make them work with her? How’s her relationship with Etta, and does Dorothy milk it for all that it is worth?

Did Dorothy ever fall in love? Was it someone off the island, campaigning for more environmental protection? A mythical creature of her very own?

Who did she meet in prison? (Was Archie someone Dorothy pulled in?) How did she deal with prison in Hong-kong? Is Dorothy the reason there are now forest cities in China (— this is maybe a bit of a reach, since Hong Kong isn’t really mainland China and all, but I’d love if the Aunts have a bit of an influence on the world, even though Fabio is probably never going to be Brasilians prime minister. Though I would read a story about that.)

(Burning questions I have that aren’t relevant to Dorothy as a character: Is Herbert ever going to return? Is the younger Kraken?)
