Parents and their strange obsession with beating their kids

I know, weird title right? But this is a bizarre problem I keep running into now that the village is back open again and it seems to be becoming more and more frequent as the season goes on.

  To give a prime example of what I am talking about, Easter was not too long ago and because it was not too long ago we had a few holiday themed events going on. I was in charge of running an Easter egg roll (it's a race type thing with eggs) and since this is integral to the story: we used wooden rods to mark the length of the egg racing track. These rods were probably about the length of a yard stick (maybe a little shorter) and these rods break very easily if any force is applied to them (like hitting something/someone with them). I happened to have been holding one of these rods in my hand and was using it as a pointer to help direct guests where to go for the race. I was not being threatening with said rod and I was more or less twirling it in my hand like a baton when I was not actively pointing at things with it. Roughly about half way through this little event a woman walked up to me with her family (her, her husband, what looked to be a grandmother, and a few kids half of which looked under the age of 6). Before I had a chance to really say anything this woman bends down to address the youngest 2 children and points at me saying the following:

"Look its the school master, they are going to beat you with that stick"

  This woman said nothing to me before this interaction. If she did she might have known that I was not the school master and I was not even remotely dressed in a way that you could have confused me for one. But that is not what bothered me the most, it was the kids facial expression. I am not sure what type of homelife these kids had but I could tell that their mother saying I was going to beat them definitely flipped a switch in these kids. They did not cry or cower but they just did not have the same bright happy expressions on their faces as they did before. And I could tell immediately that regardless of what I did/said they were probably not going to listen to a word I said because of what their parent told them just a few seconds before. And I could tell just by looking at the mother that this was probably not the first time she had said/done something like this. These kids did not participate in the egg roll and they went on their merry (or not so merry) way fairly quickly after this interaction happened. And this is just one example out of many of this behavior. 

  Now to fully explain why I hate this type of behavior let me make a few things clear: a fairly large chunk of my job is contingent on the receptiveness of the guests. So if somebody does not want to be there or does not find what I am saying worth their time every point I make is moot. Not everybody in the museum is going to be as enthusiastic about history as I am but when people are not receptive to my interpretation I can't really do my job. And when it comes to kids it's important to make learning fun and not intimidating. That is kind of why living history museums exist, we make history accessible and dare I say fun. But when you do things like this you not only make history not fun, you slap a negative association with it and the person teaching it. This results in your kid learning virtually nothing while at the museum, but also might result in their shutting out other forms of information because of those negative associations. It does not matter if its a joke or not. Because even if I were to have put away that stick I was holding that would have not fixed the situation. Because at the end of the day all that kid can think about is being hit by that stick.

  I am not particularly sure why parents seem to be obsessed with corporal punishment especally in relation to museams... but it NEEDS to stop. Not only does it make me fairly uncomfortable because nobody likes getting requests from parents to beat their kids or hearing how much they supposedly love beating children, but it also makes my job harder since 'jokes' like these shut down kids. It does not make them want to learn.
