The New Yorker wrote an article for their Movie of the Week series claiming the 1930 German silent film People on Sunday (Menschen am Sonntag) was the first mumblecore film, seventy-five years ahead of its time. I have to say I don’t disagree with them. This movie could have also been called ‘A Boy and his Wingman Spend Their Weekend Hitting on Girls’ or ‘Two Girls Lose Their Friendship Over a Fuckboy (amongst other things)’ because that’s the main plot. But honestly the plot doesn’t really matter because the film is so pretty and interesting. The best aspect of the film is the documentary style footage featuring a prewar Berlin with its bright and smiling faces. It’s hard not to wonder what happened to all those happy, carefree citizens who stroll across the screen or stop for a cameo. The film and its directors (Robert Siodmak, Edgar G. Ulmer, screenplay by Billy Wilder) seem blissfully unaware of the horrors to come, which is what makes this film so special. #peopleonsunday #menschenamsonntag #robertsiodmak #edgargulmer #billywilder #berlin #german #germansilentfilm #newobjectivity #documentary #1930 #erwinsplettstober #brigitteborchert #wolfgangvonwaltershausen #christlehlers https://www.instagram.com/p/BebZu3SBPl9/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ezluslt82ens
