Nova
Ugly Crier - McKenna Grace
EEEYYY it's the song I just added this morning, lol.
Okay, so two quick things about Nova, 1 - her dad is a literal genius who has Very High Expectations for his kids, and 2 - ya girl has ADHD. And so when she proved herself at a young age to be a pretty smart kid, her dad was very enthusiastic abt her being a Gifted Student. Unfortunately, this combo of enthusiasm and high expectations ended up unintentionally putting a lot of pressure on Nova to constantly feel like she needs to always be academically over-achieving, resulting in a perfectionist streak. Now, as I'm sure many former gifted kids with ADHD will tell you, that shit gets Progressively Harder the older you get, and eventually you absolutely WILL burn out. So this song is very accurate to the type of depressive spiral Nova finds herself in when she finally reaches the very end of her rope and can't meet her own perfectionist standards anymore, convinced that if she can't do this then she's just not worthwhile at all in general.
#oc stuff#nova leonard#the leonard family#errol's not purposefully trying to push her too far and to be Perfect#but he does unintentionally project his expectations enough that nova THINKS she needs to not disappoint him#and therefore needs to keep burning the candle at both ends until she runs out of wick#it should be noted that when she finally does break down and explain what's going on errold feels TERRIBLE about it#and immediately reassures her that it's okay to take a break and ask for help#he's a good dad he's just not always The Best bc he's a bit of an ass as a person

Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell in His Kind of Woman (John Farrow, 1951)
Cast: Robert Mitchum, Jane Russell, Vincent Price, Tim Holt, Charles McGraw, Marjorie Reynolds, Raymond Burr, Leslye Banning, Jim Backus, Philip Van Zandt, John Mylong, Carleton G. Young. Screenplay: Frank Fenton, Jack Leonard. Cinematography: Harry J. Wild. Production design: J. McMillan Johnson. Film editing: Frederic Knudtson, Eda Warren. Music: Leigh Harline.
His Kind of Woman starts out as a tough-talking film noir and ends up as a knockabout action comedy. The credit or blame for that belongs to Howard Hughes, the RKO studio head and executive producer, who waited until John Farrow had finished the movie and then had Richard Fleischer re-shoot it, even recasting the villain, originally played by Lee Van Cleef, with Raymond Burr. The New York Times reviewer hated it, partly because of the shift in tone, but most people like it. Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell were never going to outdo Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in dialogue like "They tell me you killed Ferraro. How did it feel?" "He didn't say." But they're good enough at it that they give the movie a core that the flurry of oddball characters and the loony setup for the plot needs. Vincent Price is wonderful as an Errol Flynnish movie star who spouts tags from Shakespeare as he joins Mitchum in taking on the bad guys. Hughes made sure that Russell's gowns, designed by Howard Greer, were as revealing as possible, and Mitchum spends a lot of the film without his shirt, looking a little thick in the waist to contemporary viewers used to gym-toned physiques. The end product probably wasn't worth the money Hughes lost on it, but it's still fun.

Patrician's palace v1.1 + extras
So I made acouple of changes, hopefully improvments.
First, swapped the warm yellow and metalic gold for pearl gold. Swapped metalic silver and black for regular light gray and black. Moved Old Stoneface into a dynamic pose. Changed the stair fence to reach waist high and flow better. Lowered the "wood" arcs so they don't cover the gutter rail.
Bigger arches to make the attic cleaner and more spacious.
Main cast in minifigs.
Far back row: Angua, commander Vimes, palace guard, Detritus, Rincewind Back row: Foul Ole Ron, place cook / Emma / Glenda / Grace Speaker, Death / mime, lord Rust, Igor Mid row: Otto, Tears of the Mushroom, Sybil, Erol, Moist, Mr Pump Near row: Dwarf king, Drumknott, Vetinari, Leonard, food taster / young Sam. Text: “Dear Errol — yes I did receive your telegram and thanks a million. I really needed some wonderful luck that night [and got it.] Why should your buddies tease you? What it proves is that you are an individualist and they (conform). Cheers for the individualists, I say! Best of all good things to you all your life. Ever, Tony Perkins”
Text: “Dear Sylvia, I got to thinking what a nice time I’d had at your brunch the other Sunday, my left hand reached for my old ink pen [luckily I’m left-handed or this would be illegible] and now I’m committing to paper this long, unwieldy sentence which in essence says thanks for asking me and that I hope to see you here and there, somewhere, soon. Affectionately, Tony P.” [A letter to Sylvia Lyons]
Text: “Dear Lyonses, Thanks so much for including me in your very pleasant non-cocktail Party for M. Chapall. In this you succeeded. Sylvia — call it a six o’clock brunch if you like, but it was triumphantly NOT a cocktail party. I spoke to Mary Anne Madden [(someone’s) Sister-In-Law Friday] about the extra lock on the door on your floor and she said it had been done but thanks for thinking of them. Yours, Tony P.” — [A letter to Sylvia and Leonard Lyons with some parts illegible. Feel free to offer up suggestions as to what it says!]
Here’s a little collection of letters my pal on Twitter found on worthpoint, alongside my attempts to decipher Tony’s atrocious cursive <3
Edit: I also have to note how connected I feel seeing that Tony also had to struggle with the left-handed bane — ink that doesn’t dry fast enough so you end up smearing your letters with the side of your pinky. 🙏🙏🙏 we are kindred spirits truly and deeply. I believe I have a card somewhere of his he wrote that has the pinky smear too, which yippee!! Same struggle!!

Ahmad Jamal (born Frederick Russell Jones; July 2, 1930 – April 16, 2023) was a jazz pianist, composer, bandleader, and educator. For six decades, he was one of the most successful small-group leaders in jazz. He was a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master and won a Lifetime Achievement Grammy for his contributions to music history.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He began playing piano at the age of three when his uncle Lawrence challenged him to duplicate what he was doing on the piano. He began formal piano training at the age of seven with Mary Cardwell Dawson, whom he described as having greatly influenced him. His Pittsburgh roots remained an important part of his identity (“Pittsburgh meant everything to me and it still does,” he said in 2001) and it was there that he was immersed in the influence of jazz artists such as Earl Hines, Billy Strayhorn, Mary Lou Williams, and Erroll Garner. He studied with pianist James Miller and began playing piano professionally at the age of fourteen, at which point he was recognized as a “coming great” by the pianist Art Tatum. When asked about his practice habits by a critic from The New York Times, he commented, “I used to practice and practice with the door open, hoping someone would come by and discover me. I was never a practitioner in the sense of twelve hours a day, but I always thought about music. I think about music all the time.”
In his 80s, he continued to make numerous tours and recordings, including albums such as Saturday Morning (2013), the CD/DVD release Ahmad Jamal Featuring Yusef Lateef Live at L’Olympia (2014), and Marseille (2017), which features vocals in French. He was the main mentor of jazz piano virtuosa Hiromi Uehara, known as Hiromi. In 1986, he sued critic Leonard Feather for using his former name in a publication. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Spence vs. Crawford SHOWTIME PPV® Takes Place Saturday, July 29 in Premier Boxing Champions Event from T-Mobile Arena In Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS – Undefeated WBC, WBA, and IBF Welterweight World Champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. showed off his skills at a media workout in Las Vegas on Thursday as he nears his much-anticipated showdown against WBO Welterweight World Champion Terence “Bud” Crawford which headlines a SHOWTIME PPV on Saturday, July 29 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The four-fight pay-per-view telecast begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and will see Spence look to complete his conquest of the welterweight division after first becoming world champion in 2017 before adding 147-pound world titles in 2019 and 2022. The winner between Spence and Crawford will hold the distinction as the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era and likely emerge as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.
Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Man Down Promotions, TBC Promotions, and TGB Promotions, are available through AXS.com.
Here is what Spence, along with his esteemed trainer Derrick James, had to say Thursday:
ERROL SPENCE JR.
“This is what I’ve worked for my whole career. I want to be that undisputed welterweight champion of the world, and I’m excited to go up against a great opponent like Terence Crawford to accomplish that.
“I’ve been fighting the best for a long time. When you see all the legends of the sport, they fought each other and made historic fights. That’s what I want to do. Terence is one of the best fighters in the world, and I’m one of the best fighters in the world, so we had to make this happen.
“It’s definitely business as usual, but we’ve still amped up the training because of the opponent I’m facing. Terence can really fight, and I believe that we’re gonna put on a great show and a great performance.
“I’m not worried about being the underdog. People can say what they say and have their opinions. I just have to go prove them wrong.
“I’ve been feeling the buzz for this fight. Anywhere I go, they’ve been asking me about this fight. I knew I had to make it happen. This is what everyone wanted. We have to prove who the man is in the welterweight division and in boxing. The winner of this fight is the best fighter in boxing period.
“Every belt I’ve gotten, I’ve taken from somebody. I beat champion after champion. I’m going through the ringer, fighting the best guys in my division. There’s a big difference between facing a champion and someone without a belt. The guys with the belts have a lot more to fight for.
“I don’t know how much the size will factor into the fight until we get into the ring. They say he’s a strong guy, and we’ll see next week.
“Everybody, make sure you tune into this fight. It’s gonna be an amazing fight. This fight is gonna be a war of attrition. It’s a guts and glory type of fight.
“I don’t think there’s anyone I fought who’s similar to Terence Crawford. His style is different from anybody else. I don’t think Sugar Ray Leonard fought anyone like Tommy Hearns until he fought Tommy, and vice versa. That’s what happens in these historic fights.”
DERRICK JAMES, Spence’s Trainer
“This means everything. From the moment Errol turned pro, he said what he wanted to do. There were so many steps he had to take to get to this point, and now there’s just one more step to take. Being undisputed champion is everything he wanted.
“Our goal is to be able to push like we push in every fight. We’re going to use everything we’ve used to be successful throughout Errol’s career. It’s up to Terence if he can step to that.
“We’ve been training and sparring a lot since Errol last fought, so it’s not like he hasn’t been in the ring. He’ll just have to adjust to Terence’s timing in the fight. It might take a couple of rounds, but once he figures it out, he can do everything he has to do.
“I’m my greatest competition. I’m not worried about who’s in the other corner. It could be anybody. My focus is on being who I am every day leading up to the fight and continuing to compete with myself.
“The perfect performance is a victory. I don’t care how he gets it; it’s just that he gets it. That’s what we’re working for.”

Nominated but thrown out of the competition:
Harrison Ford (not really working in movies in the 1910s-1960s, so outside the scope of this bracket)
Leonard Nimoy (not a movie leading man but a television dude)
Welcome to the HOT AND VINTAGE MOVIE STARS bracket! we are currently collecting submissions for the HOTTEST and VINTAGEST male movie stars from 1910-1970. (we will do the ladies next.) if you have a hot vintage man in mind, please fill out the submission sheet above or send us an ask with the appropriate propaganda!
To be counted in the bracket, your submission must (1) be a male movie star from classical Hollywood cinema, i.e. from the 1910s through the late 1960s, and (2) be considered to have been leading man material, i.e. hot, sexy, and on the marquee in big bright lights. In consideration of the Hollywood studio system's racist and narrow-minded casting policies, submissions of supporting actors who did not achieve leading man status in their time but clearly had the charisma and charm to have thrived if they'd been given the chance are welcome. If you're submitting someone not particularly well known, please link a picture where we can see your nominee at his hottest.
Feel free to submit as many times as you like, but one submission per form please. If you have a photo of your hot vintage man in his "best" era (several of these stars had multi-decade careers), please include a link so I don't show a pic of them at their crustiest and worst
This submissions page closes 12/14/2023, and the bracket should be up by 12/16/2023 :)
