Halloween 2023 Content Round-Up
So........my October was a lot more packed than I thought. I ended up extremely busy across the board with school and shows, so I wasn't able to watch every single thing on my list. However, I ended up getting through a lot more than I thought I would.
Here's the rundown:
Ginger Snaps (2001) - thesis research, more to come
Blood Red Sky (2021) - monsters, motherhood, and the monstrous-feminine, more to come
El Conde (2023) - I was confused, but in a good way?
Flux Gourmet (2022) - really bizarre, but really really good
The Lighthouse (2019) - very odd, unsure how to feel about it
Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021) -folk horror is really cool, more to come
The Most Assassinated Woman in the World (2018) - super interesting examination of trauma and escapism
Errementari: The Devil and the Blacksmith (2017) - again, folk horror is really cool
Ganja and Hess (1973) - thesis research, more to come
The Pale Door (2020) - depiction of witched, more to come
She-Creature (2001) - thesis research, more to come
Birdboy: The Forgotten Children (2015) - lore is a bit confusing, but it's beautiful
Freeway (1996) - fucks with me every time I watch it
Midnight Mass (2021) - I think about Riley Flynn literally every single day of my life
The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) - this show fucks 10/10
Creepshow S4 (2023) - perhaps the best season of the show yet
Considering three of these are tv shows, I'd say I did pretty well.

[ERREMENTARI] 2017
"THE DEVIL AND THE BLACKSMITH"
"A blacksmith holds a demon in captivity, torturing it as revenge for his troubles. One day, an orphan girl stumbles upon the demon's enclosure and unwittingly releases it."
[ubasjuice reviews]
A Spanish/Basque supernatural/horror film, directed by Paul Urkijo, who also did "Irati (2022)"
This was one of the best storybook type of storytelling, the kind that could be told from generation to generation; based on the Basque folktale version of The Smith and the Devil; it is well-paced, well-written, also mixed with some dark humor and a pretty enjoyable watch for a film that deals with demons and hell.
The design of the demon, as textbook as it can be, is perfectly done. I don't want to describe it that much as I want you guys to see it firsthand as well. Every detail of it fits the deathly feel of the whole film, it's dark and gritty.
There's no jump scares involved, no gory scenes, no "fillers" that would make one yawn, no impending-doom-sound effects as well, really just good storytelling that makes you want to sit and listen.
Casting was also great, it's not perfect, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. All of them performed well and acted as they should on the scenes, a very good display of proper screenwriting.
The way they started and how they ended it was satisfying and put a smile on my face. You'll know what I'm saying when you've watched it. It's very underrated in my opinion.
Juicy 9/10

Oh hey!! Not sure if you ever heard of it, but I'd like to recommend you the movie "Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil". It's a Basque movie (all of it spoken in Basque) based on a Basque myth. Not sure if you've ever had the chance of seeing a movie in Basque, but it's such a fascinating language unlike anything I've ever heard before. Also it's technically a horror movie, but more on the fantasy horror side rather than gorey horror.
not me getting niche movie recs from autonomous communities in spain bc of my albert serra url... yess. watchlisted! sounds interesting

Meet the Witch
(Saw someone else make a post like this and I thought it looked fun.)
September 2023 Name: Caelan Age: 23 Birthday: October 31st (yes, for real) Pronouns: My pronouns change from day to day. Check my pinned post. Astrological Signs: Scorpio Sun, Leo Moon, Virgo Rising, Sagittarius is the most common sign in my chart. Deities: Apollo, Loki, Lucifer, and Nyarlathotep
Witchy Facts About Me:
The element I feel the strongest connection to is fire.
I usually don't give exact, specific ingredients, words, etc when sharing spells. I feel like it's just going to discourage people who don't have access to certain items, can't perform specific acts, or can't memorize words very well.
I'm very interested in divination, especially astrology, tarot, oracle decks, and scrying.
I actually rarely work with my deities in witchcraft. That's more of a religious thing, and I don't always mix my religion and my craft. I'm more interested in working with my pre-Christian Irish ancestors. Nyarlathotep does give me very useful advice for my craft, though.
I'm not going to hesitate to hex a corrupt politician, an abuser, or anyone who unapologetically makes the world a worse place. No, you're not going to convince me that it's going to come back to me. It never has before, and I don't believe it will in the future.
As a heads-up, if you are a "love and light, never do harm ever" type of witch, this is probably not the blog for you. I don't think that you're any less valid or respectable for being that kind of witch; I just want you to know upfront that I am not that kind of witch and that I will most likely never be that kind of witch.
I try to take potential disabilities into consideration when writing spells, rituals, and other magical activities. It often feels like, when I read witchcraft books, the author will say that you have to do something a specific way. Like, "you have to do a bath ritual for this to work," or "you have to meditate first." And that completely fails to consider that some people aren't objecting to these things because they don't want to do them; they're protesting because they literally cannot do the tasks that the author says that they must do.
My Favorite WC Books
The Crooked Path by Kelden
Besom, Stang, and Sword by Christopher Orapello and Tara-Love Maguire

“Language revitalisation bad!” is not a take I was expecting to see… anywhere, really. But least of all on Tumblr.
I like minority languages. I think I’m pretty good at finding media in them. Since I’m on the topic, I’d particularly recommend Edge of the Knife (Haida: SG̲aawaay Ḵ'uuna) and The Blacksmith & The Devil (aka, Errementari, Basque). And while I haven’t seen it yet, Manchu is so rare that I’d include War of the Arrows for having any Manchu in it at all.
But I’ve also found a whole Israeli TV drama, Shtisel, that’s pretty much half Yiddish. There are many ways to drive a language to extinction, sure, but government-funded linguistic extermination campaigns don’t usually let you get multiple seasons of a TV show. For Ladino, there’s also the Israeli movie, The House on Chelouche Street.
Assimilationist and exterminist language policy do not usually allow minority language in books, let alone onto screens.
not only are there no bad languages there are also no bad or annoying dialects

Chris: Errementari is a folk horror / fantasy from Spain about a town blacksmith who is believed to be in cahoots with the devil, incredible imagery and effects, hope to see it again, Watch: On Subscription Service.
Richie: It was a fun Basque folk horror / fantasy, a little slow at times that makes up for it with fantastic creature designs, Watch: On Subscription Service.

Not the beach party part, but other than that this is almost exactly the plot of a really cool movie named Errementari: The Blacksmith and The Devil
I dreamt that I was some kinda bad-ass in an action movie. Eventually I agreed to go to hell in exchange for the people I was trying to save. Something was understood, like I was such a bad ass hell would never be able to catch up with me if I didn't agree to go... IDK dream logic is fun. ANYWAY. I get picked up and carried off and when I get to hell, it's just a huge beach party. So I mean. Win / win. See you all in hell.

Errementari: Sartael/Demons HCs
yoooooooooooo i’m 3 yrs late to this movie but im obsessed and lets do thiiiis~
these are hcs i made about sartael and all other demons in this movie
firstly, the amount of demons in hell are as innumerable as the amount of human souls are in there
since hell is divided into categories (think dante’s inferno) this means that there are different demons for each punishment
there are also more..... bureaucratic parts of hell (its a vast place) and there are demons for those jobs too
tbh all the demons know each other
they’ve spent centuries in hell since the dawn of time, everyone knows everyone let the gossip commence
there’s also a hierarchy of demons
like low level demons are basically the run of the mill ones that go out and tempt ppl by making deals but also the ones who execute the punishments
sartael is a low level demon lol
the bigger demons like alastor are the higher ranking demons, they usually are in a position to tell lower demons what to do and carry out orders from the big man downstairs
there’s more than one way to enter hell than through the fiery gates and yes some of them u can enter and leave without consequence
now lets get into the demons that tempt humans
to demons, humans have their own scent. one demon can smell a small village from miles away
if a demon spends time with a human, they learn that human’s individual scent
although demons are immortal they CAN feel pain like anyone else
most injuries don’t last long though and heal quickly
however some are permanent (i.e. sartael’s broken horn poor bb)
burns are the fastest to heal tho
since they basically live in the fiery pits of hell, burns are like nothing to them
demons can shapeshift obv since they are supposed to trick humans
however they are not supposed to reveal their true identity until the last moment when they are taking the human’s soul to hell
blessed bells hurt their ears considerably, we know this from the movie
to them it’s a horrible screeching sound that they hear
can’t step foot in a church due to it being holy grounds
blessed items in general make their skin sting
they have an aversion to images of christ or anything holy related
it’s hard to explain... it doesn’t hurt them necessarily but they have an extreme dislike of it like a biological hate
if you had to label them, on the whole demons are pansexual (can have preferences tho!)
since they are demons, they tend to look down on humans since they are a different species and they don’t understand why they are so fickle about orientation
since its their job to tempt humans, they are not above sleeping with same sex when they are in their human form
they are also confused by women being seen as weaker than men and patriarchy as a whole in many human societies
demons have seen so many human souls, male and female, young and old do horrible things that they don’t consider one gender weaker or stronger than the other, everyone’s shitty
demons have an innate inclination for causing suffering to humans
this can range from little mischievous antics to the upmost cruel acts
its just within their nature
however they are also capable of experiencing emotions such as love, sadness, anguish, etc
so yes they can experience real relationships if they want to however who has the time when ur supposed to tempt souls all day?
who wants to befriend a human anyway??
there are some demons who have fled hell to stay in the human world, this is against protocol and other demons are sent to bring them back eventually
okay so that was more about demons than sartael specifically BUT i will be making MORE hcs in the future for this movie stay tuned~
also let me know if u want any specific hcs???

It's very suspenseful, and the premise feels adjacent to Late Night With the Devil (2024). We're getting into satanic panic style occult conspiracy shit in a late night show, but in Argentina.
I...liked that a lot. I wish there had been a little more to the climax of the film, because it's fascinating and leaning into cosmic horror and I would just have liked a little more.
Day 27: Spanish Horror
Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil (2018) is actually a Basque language film.
Wow, this entire village is shitty to this little orphan girl.
Anyway, I realized that I've also been doing a lot of extracurricular horror film watching this month, either to half-watch while I'm working, or after the main film of the evening And thus I've already watched thirty-five horror films this month, despite being a day behind on my list. Which I should be able to catch up tonight, actually.
Oh, and this evening, I made rice balls filled with smoked salmon! They...are probably delicious, but the cat is laying on my forearms at the moment, so they are on the shelf where she won't, like. Step on them.
Day 26: Black and White
History of the Occult (2020)
Oh, I like this. A shadowy conspiracy, a notebook in code, the final episode of a news program.
Mm! And, can confirm, these onigiri are delicious.
