47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019)

Like its predecessor (to which it is a sequel in name only; no characters return), 47 Meters Down: Uncaged isn’t revolutionary. It’s got what you’d expect from a shark survival horror film and a couple of neat ideas, starting with its central location. If blood in the water is something that lures you to the cinema, this one’s fun to sink your teeth into.

Seeking a new adventure, step-sisters Mia (Sophie Nélisse) and Sasha (Corinne Foxx), along with friends Alexa (Brianne Tju) and Nicole (Sistine Rose Stallone) spontaneously decide to scuba dive through some newly-discovered, underwater Mayan ruins. When the appearance of a shark scares them into accidentally causing a cave-in, they are now trapped inside and running out of air.

A blind cavefish quickly swims towards the camera as a scream is blasted through the theatre’s speakers. This first scare makes your heart sink. Don’t worry, it gets better from there. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged preys on numerous fears, meaning it never runs out of tools. Claustrophobia, asphyxiation, drowning, sharks, and the dark are all major chill-generators at one point. The best scenes are when the girls only have a diver’s emergency beacon to illuminate the waters. Darkness. Red. Darkness. Red. Darkness. SHARK! Darkness. Illuminated in monochrome, the sea predator is even more terrifying than usual. The odds are stacked high against the young women but they’re given just enough hope for you to remain invested. The shark navigating the labyrinthine corridors is blind. That evens out the teams just enough.

The moments of desperate panic as the girls crawl through tight corridors of stone made me sweat and actually, I came to like them quite a bit. When they make decisions whose outcomes are bad, it’s because they’re scared, they’re panicking. Who am I to judge? I'm scared too. I should’ve probably seen some of the surprises the picture has in store coming. I’ll admit I didn’t.

There are little details about the movie that you may not notice but will appreciate subconsciously. It’d be really easy for you to get confused as to who’s who inside the waters. Everyone’s wearing scuba gear and it's pretty dark. Having an ethnically diverse cast goes a long way to helping you differentiate who’s who and everybody gets much more screen time than you’d expect, making them even easier to identify. The design of the blind shark, the use of silt inside the catacombs, the slight little bit of sick irony during the conclusion, it’s good stuff. I’m also going to give it a positive nod for explicitly saying (in its end credits) that this is a movie; in reality, sharks kill less than 10 people a year.

47 Meters Below: Uncaged comes in with a great setting for its story, exploits numerous fears to keep things moving, has some genuine scares and balances the character and shark moments well. The ending's too long, it’s nothing revolutionary but you’ll have fun screaming. (Theatrical version on the big screen, August 17, 2019)
