One of my favorite books of all time is actually a YA novel- A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb. Love story with a ghostly twist. Changed my LIFE as a teen. Still holds up as an adult.

My fave from more recent years is The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. Period drama, Great Depression era, Dust Bowl. Strong female characters. Made me SOB.

My favorite series right now is definitely A Court Of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas. These books are definitely hate them or love them. EYE personally love the world-building and storyline and hotsexy characters but what do I know 🙄 Would encourage haters to give em a chance.

Psychological Thrillers/Crime/Etc.

Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough. FUCKED ME UP. BLEW MY MIND.

Survive the Night and Lock Every Door, both by Riley Sager. Easy reads, lots of suspense.

And Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell. Storytelling at its finest!!!! Anything by Lisa Jewell is perfect.

The Crow Girl by Erik Axl Sund. Deeply chilling and so good. (cw sexual abuse of a minor)

Period Romance

Anything by Cat Sebastian. Most of her books are m/m but she’s got some variety. Tender bodice rippers. (Faves: The Soldier’s Scoundrel 😏, We Could Be So Good)

A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske. m/m. Fantastic Beasts vibes. Heart-achingly good.

Captive Prince trilogy by C S Pacat. The GOAT. m/m. (cw sexual abuse of minors, very dubious consent situations, sexual slavery)

The Perks of Loving a Wallflower by Erica Ridley. f/f. We love gay girlbosses in victorian era England.

Bought some new books today and I’m really looking forward to reading them!

The Crow Girl by Erik Axl Sund is focused on crime and retribution from my understanding. TW for topics of abuse in this book, based off the synopsis I found.

The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe is about post-war airplane development and NASA if I remember correctly! I believe it takes place post WW2.

Family Business by Anna Murdoch is set in the Great Depression about family business origin and drama, pinning the main character into choosing between politics and the family business.

Never victorious, never defeated by Taylor Caldwell spans the late 30s to early-mid 50s and focuses on family complications, drama, and politics focused on the railroad industry from what I remember reading in its synopsis.

I am very excited to read all of these!! I got them while thrifting and they’re all in amazing quality, and I got them as a great price as well.

Missed the 1k goal by about 50 pages (I'm disappointed, ngl) and ran out of red tabs (substituted with green), but I can honestly say that "the most disturbing book you'll read all year" is an accurate superlative.

Résumé

Nova et Mercy ont à peine seize ans, mais cela fait déjà bien longtemps qu’elles ont perdu leur innocence. Sous le couvert de la nuit, elles s’enfuient à bord d’une voiture volée, laissant derrière elles le foyer pour jeunes filles où une autre adolescente vient de disparaître. Que fuient-elles ? Et pourquoi ?

Tara est retrouvée sans vie en bas d’un immeuble. Selon sa famille, il s’agit d’un suicide. Mais quelque chose ne colle pas dans le récit de ses parents. Et qui peut bien être la personne qui lui avait donné rendez-vous ce soir-là ? Celui que la police ne va pas tarder à surnommer le Marionnettiste vient seulement de commencer son spectacle.

Mon avis

Le résumé mettait l'eau à la bouche. Les premières pages sont tellement accrochantes qu'on se demande comment on ne pourrait pas aimer ce livre. Et pourtant... Ce roman est une déception.

Tout d'abord, il faut comprendre que la chronologie est très compliquée et les chapitres courts. Au départ, on essaye vraiment de situer chaque moment dans le temps et, finalement, on se contente d'essayer de comprendre.

L'univers est très sombre. Ça parle beaucoup de crimes sexuels et de pédopornographie, âmes sensibles s'abstenir donc ! Cela ne me dérange pas du tout en temps normal mais, ici, ça devient lourd, très lourd sans pour autant se sentir impliqué émotionnellement dans l'histoire. Les chapitres très courts n'aident pas à se mettre dans cette ambiance sombre et triste, on ressent juste une longue succession de malheurs. Les personnages ont l'avantage de ne pas être stéréotypés mais on n'a pas assez de temps pour rentrer dans leur tête et s'attacher à eux. Certains d'entre eux comme Love Martinsson auraient mérités d'être approfondies.

L'auteur a l'air d'être plus impliqué à nous donner une description de la Suède et de ces petits villages que de nous donner du pain à manger sur les intrigues. Il y a un m'as-tu-vu extrêmement agaçant, on nous bombarde sans cesse de fun facts, d'éléments historiques et autres digressions pour rallonger les pages à l'extrême. Quand on retire tout ça : on réalise à quel point l'histoire est vide. Les intrigues ne tiennent pas sur la durée, elles sont très vite résolues et ne surprennent pas tant que ça... Toutes ces enquêtes entremêlées autour de la pédopornographie auraient pu être intéressantes si on nous avait donné des vraies résolutions et pas des fins bâclées.

Ce n'est malheureusement pas une révélation pour moi loin de là et je ne conseillerais pas spécialement ce roman sauf si votre pile à livre est vide.
