Gentrification and Pittsburgh’s Troubled History of Minority Displacement
The United States has a long history of displacement and consolidation of minority communities and Pittsburgh is certainly no exception (Vilay, 2020). In the 1950’s, the city began an urban renewal campaign that included the construction of the Pittsburgh Civic arena and ultimately resulted in the displacement of over 8,000 primarily African American residents from the Hill District community. Prior to these urban renewal initiatives, the Hill District was considered a cultural center for the African American community and the neighborhood benefited from strong social networks and high levels of trust between residents. The displacement of the Hill District community had traumatic and long-lasting effects, as the breakdown of social networks lead to psychological distress and depression which amplified economic disadvantages and made communities more susceptible to adverse health outcomes. Those that remained in the Hill District now live in one of the most distressed neighborhoods in the city (Flórez et al., 2016). With the fallout from this example of displacement still impacting African American communities and Pittsburgh experiencing levels of gentrification commonly seen in postindustrial cities, even the most at-risk residents may be hesitant to participate in buyout programs or engage in conversations about relocation. While some may argue that this influx of wealth into working class communities is a positive change, existing, lower income residents may no longer be able to afford a new home in their original community if they are displaced by a landslide. Buyout programs, when they are available, are often underfunded, with homeowners only receiving compensation for the current value of their properties (Vilay, 2020). If residents are forced to relocate to a new community because they can no longer afford the higher rents and home prices in their current neighborhood, this leads to the breakdown of community bonds, reduced access to employment or increased commute times to work or school, and worse health outcomes stemming from trauma and depression and potentially degraded environmental conditions of the new neighborhood. While Pittsburgh does not currently have a buyout program for landslide-impacted properties, any discussions surrounding the implementation of such a program should be sensitive the city’s history with minority displacement and should include feedback and engagement with members of those communities. Aside from buyout programs, the city could also pursue landslide prevention techniques that utilize reforestation and other examples of green infrastructure in order to stabilize its steepest slopes, including the Pittsburgh Greenways.

Todd captures Funny Car title, takes Pomona win
FUNNY CAR
J.R. Todd clinched his first career NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Funny Car championship during the first round of eliminations Sunday at the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
Robert Hight, his closest rival and defending category champion, smoked the tires against Bob Tasca III during the opening round of eliminations which guaranteed the title crown to Todd.
“People kept asking, ‘What do you need to do to clinch?’,” Todd stated. “I’m like, we need to win the race. We need to not worry about what we need to clinch it. Seeing Robert smoke the tires first round was instant relief. My crew was racing smart and the Yella Fellas do an awesome job preparing the thing today. They stayed focused all day long because there were a lot of distractions around our pit area and they did their job.
“The other teams at Kalitta Motorsports came over to help and I can’t thank them enough. It’s a huge family over there and we’ve all got each other’s backs and it’s awesome to have that kind of support.”
Todd went on to dominate the season ending event with a run of 3.872 at 329.10 taking down the defending two-time event champion Tommy Johnson Jr.’s Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger R/T. He finishes the season with six race wins.
TOP FUEL
Steve Torrence made NHRA history by sweeping all six playoff races during the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship. He raced his Capco Contractors/Torrence Racing dragster to a holeshot win of 3.702 at 330.07 against NHRA’s winningest Top Fuel driver Tony Schumacher’s run of 3.700 at 331.61 in the final round. This is Torrence’s 11th win of the season, 27th of his career and first at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
“It has truly been unbelievable,” Torrence stated. “To go out and do what those Capco Boys have accomplished is solely by the grace of the good Lord. We’ve won some rounds that we probably should not have won. We are truly blessed to be able to do what we’re doing. We’re going to be in the history books. Nobody can beat us; they can only tie us. That’s a pretty cool stat to put behind your name.”
Torrence’s path to victory included wins against Cameron Ferre, teammate and father Billy Torrence and outgoing champion Brittany Force.
PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE
Matt Smith secured his third NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock Motorcycle championship in the final round of eliminations. He powered his Elite Motorsports DENSO Auto Parts EBR to a 6.765 at 201.22 national speed record pass to defeat defending champion Eddie Krawiec, who was the nearest championship contender. M. Smith defeated Angie Smith, Hector Arana and LE Tonglet en route to the finals to secure the championship and event title. This is his first championship since 2013.
“Man, we went through a lot today,” M. Smith said. “With the airline breaking in the first round and in the second round the transmission broke on us going through the lights. My guys did their job and we fixed all of the stuff that broke and ended up putting up three 200mph runs today. We are having the time of our life right now though.”
Smith’s championship season had four race victories with three of them coming during the Countdown.
PRO STOCK
Gray’s qualifying performance was enough to earn him the Pro Stock title and he went on to win the race in his Gray Motorsports Valvoline Chevrolet Camaro with a run of 6.519 at 211.86. That was enough to defeat Drew Skillman’s pass of 6.524 at 211.03.
It was Gray’s eighth victory of the season, 13th of his two-year career and first at the Auto Club NHRA Finals.
“This was probably the most relaxed Sunday I’ve had ever,” Gray said. “For me, I just wanted to enjoy the moment. That was the last time I was going to race with a lot of those guys. We had already won seven races and that’s really good and obviously I wanted to win more but at the same time I wanted to enjoy the time I had with the guys and make the most out of it.”
Gray drove past his father Shane Gray, Erica Enders and Jason Line before entering his second consecutive final round appearance at the event. Skillman defeated Alan Prusiensky, veteran Greg Anderson and No. 1 qualifier Jeg Coughlin Jr. before falling in the finals.

Exciting Competition at the Lucas Oil, NHRA 2018 Winternationals!
Exploding engines, crashes, and a new record kicked off the 2018 NHRA calendar at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California. Early on, Funny Car legend John Force shed the body off of his Peak Auto Chevrolet Camaro, while his daughter and last year’s champion Brittany Force went along for the ride as her Top Fuel car hit both walls and rolled over. She was taken to the hospital and treated for an injured shoulder.

The 11,000hp monsters powering some of these cars, though strong, can have a tough day. This was the case for Kalitta Motorsports driver Doug Kalitta, whose Top Fuel engine erupted into a fireball in the first elimination round of competition. Despite this, he came back to nudge out Tony Schumacher for the win in Top Fuel.
World champion, Robert Hight, couldn’t quite keep up with Matt Hagan, who made a 3.823-second pass at 335.90 mph, taking the win in Funny Car. This marks Hagen’s 27th career win and second consecutive Winternationals victory.
Bo Butner looks to defend his Pro Stock title this season and did so with a win. Taking down teammate Jason Line, Butner ran a 6.549 at 209.62 mph in the final round.
A record was also broken in Pomona last weekend, when Top Fuel driver Clay Millican piloted his car to a 3.628-second pass at 322.04 mph, the quickest pass for a Top Fuel car.

2017 NHRA Sonoma Nationals: Thank You, May I Have Another.
TLP made it down to Sonoma Raceway this past weekend to check out the 2017 NHRA Toyota Sonoma Nationals. This was only our 2nd trip to the big league drag races, and as before, it was a feast for the senses. Actually, that's a bit too poetic...frankly, it is almost like this event was trying to kill us, or at least teach us a lesson. Lets go to NHRA races again we said...Lets get chewed up and spit out fully abused from another trip to the strip we said....
Because we'd experienced the show last year, we foolishly assumed we were immune to the shock and awe that is the NHRA experience (oh silly us). Other than some relative calm in the morning, before the crews pulled the cars out of the transporters, the rest of the weekend was a bombardment of nitromethane fumes, ear shattering exhaust (punishing even at idle) and the chest punching and all encompassing shock and awe of 10,000+ horsepower beasts launching down the quarter mile runway.
The sheer fury of watching a NHRA drag race event cannot be understated. Add up the cumulative mental and physical effects of the scores nitromethane powered funny cars, and other classes of drag cars and motorcycles, and one will leave the weekend a bit dazed (and maybe a little confused) about the show. We know that many of our readers stick to what they know (we were just like you). Whether it be sports/stock car racing, vintage events, dirt/street/formula bikes or the stuffiness of a concours event, many of our gear head brethren stay in their lane. Consider this a call to action. If you haven't seen a funny car at 300 plus MPH you owe it to yourself to see it in person at least once...and after your recovery, you'll thank us.
This wasn't a normal weekend. While much of California experienced triple digit heat, Sonoma Raceway was an oasis of perfect temperature and a slight breeze all afternoon. The combination of this ideal weather and the fact that Sonoma Raceway is situated roughly at sea level, creates what many consider the perfect conditions for a drag race. Friday night saw a record breaking run by Robert Hight in the California Highway Patrol/Auto Club entry. Hight put in a 339.87 mph run, the fastest qualifying run in NHRA history, as he jumped to the top of the qualifying order after day one. Not to be left out of the record breaking, Brittany Force, on Sunday, set the Sonoma Raceway speed record with a 331.61 mph run!
This event isn't just about the Funny Cars and Top Fuel dragsters...the weekend is packed with two and four wheeled racing. There were another 12 classes of cars and bikes competing at the event. Honestly, there would be no way for the two of us to be able to report on all of the weekend action. Starting from the time the first run in the morning, there is a fairly constant queue of cars and motorcycles being called to stage and run, one after another. For a list winners, by class, see below our picture gallery.
Because of the relentless pace and frequency of the action, we have to acknowledge that the NHRA/Mello Yello staging crew are simply remarkable. We get fatigued just watching a hand full of runs, but the folks who make the show go, operate in the thick of all the heat and exhaust for hours upon hours over the 3-day event. We don't quite know how they do it, but they do, and our hats are off to them for making the event work and in a controlled and safe manner.
In quasi-dragracing news: While roaming the paddock looking to get our next fix (gassing) of nitromethane aftermath, we found the car world's totem, none other than The Stig himself (or herself..we just don't know)! The Stig was hanging with his new buddy, three time NHRA Top Fuel champion Antron Brown. Brown is one of the new co-host of Top Gear America which premiered Sunday night. While drafting this article we actually watched a little of the new Top Gear America on BBC America....not bad.
In closing, we'll simply let the article's title summarize things. Though we still have a lot to learn about the women, men, machines and culture of the NHRA, this event left us wanting more....more noise, more speed, more sensory pain and more drag racing in general. We look forward to watching the rest of the NHRA season on the small screen. If the folks at NHRA have us back in 2018, we will indeed have another!
As usual, we'll point out that we feel that our photographs do a much better job of giving the feel of the events we attend. Please take a look at the gallery below for a better idea of what this weekend was all about.
Lastly, we must also give a shout out to the staff of Sonoma Raceway. An event that brings tens of thousands of amped-up gear heads together can't be easy to manage, but the staff of Sonoma Raceway make it look effortless while managing a constant flow of people and traffic.
Enjoy.
