Researchers reveal a map to study novel form of cell-to-cell communication

“Ribonucleic acid or RNA is one type of genetic material that is present inside all living cells. It is mostly known to act as a messenger carrying instructions encoded in the DNA for the synthesis of proteins,” said co-corresponding author, Dr. Aleksandar Milosavljevic, professor and Henry and Emma Meyer Chair in Molecular Genetics at Baylor. He also is the director of the Graduate Program in Quantitative & Computational Biosciences and a member of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center at Baylor. The Milosavljevic Lab is the host of the exRNA Atlas, the data management and resource repository of the Extracellular RNA Communication Consortium, an NIH Common Fund project exploring the biology of exRNA. In recent years research has shown that RNA not only exists inside cells, but also is exported from cells as extracellular RNA and plays a role in cell-to-cell communication. “ExRNAs exist in bodily fluids outside of cells where they can associate with a variety of carriers including RNA binding proteins (RBPs), but the cargo and distribution of RBPs across biofluids is largely unknown,” said coauthor Robert Fullem, a graduate student in the Milosavljevic lab. “Our goal in this study was to fill that gap. This major gap in knowledge limited our understanding of the role of RBPs as carriers of exRNA in human bodily fluids. Our findings open a new road toward understanding exRNA biology and provide new opportunities for the development of exRBP/exRNA liquid biopsy biomarkers.” The researchers applied computational analyses to identify exRBPs in plasma, serum, saliva, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. The computational predictions were validated experimentally at about 80% in both plasma and cell cultures in the lab, suggesting high specificity for the computational method. “With this information, we developed a map of candidate exRBPs and their exRNA cargo in bodily fluids expanding the landscape of potential biomarkers that can now be studied in liquid biopsies and used to track normal and disease processes,” Milosavljevic said. “We present this map as a resource available at no cost to the scientific community.” Other contributors to this work include co-first authors Emily L. King and Queen to pay state visit to Greece – programme

His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima will be paying a state visit to Greece, at the invitation of President Katerina Sakellaropoulou. The visit will take place from Monday 31 October to Wednesday 2 November in Athens and Thessaloniki.

The King and Queen will be accompanied by Dutch foreign minister Wopke Hoekstra. Minister for Migration Eric van der Burg and State Secretary for Health, Welfare and Sport Maarten van Ooijen will attend selected parts of the programme. The state visit could not go ahead as planned in 2021 nor in March this year. Both times the visit was postponed after close consultation between King Willem-Alexander and President Sakellaropoulou.

The state visit reaffirms the good bilateral relations between Greece and the Netherlands. The two countries have been closely connected for over 40 years within the EU, and for 70 years within NATO. The Netherlands and Greece work together to ensure Europe remains open, innovative, safe and stable. The state visit will focus on issues including cooperation on innovation, sustainability, migration and human rights, and the countries’ partnership within the European Union.

Monday 31 October and Tuesday 1 November: Athens

To mark the start of the state visit on Monday morning, the King and Queen will lay a wreath at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square in Athens. They will then be welcomed by President Sakellaropoulou at the Presidential Palace.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will then meet with representatives of the Greek Ombudsman and the Dutch Ombudsman at the Netherlands Institute in Athens. Since its inception, the Greek Ombudsman organisation has worked closely with its Dutch counterpart to protect the fundamental rights of citizens and migrants. In the afternoon the King and Queen will visit the Acropolis, where they will take a walking tour of the Erechtheion and the Parthenon.

Later in the afternoon the King and Queen will meet the mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, and attend a reception for the Dutch community. On Monday evening, President Sakellaropoulou will host a state banquet at the Presidential Palace, at which both heads of state will give a speech.

On Tuesday morning the King and Queen will visit the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center to see the World Press Photo exhibition on women’s rights, titled ‘Resilience – stories of women inspiring change’. This will be followed by a roundtable discussion on combating violence against women. The Greek president will participate in this discussion, as will Greek and Dutch policymakers and representatives of human rights organisations and implementing agencies. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will then attend a pitch competition for startups, organised by Orange Grove, the Dutch embassy’s platform offering support to young Greek entrepreneurs and startups.

The royal couple will then visit the Elpida oncology clinic at Paidon children’s hospital, which has a partnership with the Princess Máxima Centre for Pediatric Oncology. After a tour that includes the clinic’s stem cell laboratory, they will speak with former patients about their experiences.

In the afternoon, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will attend a concert by refugee children from a number of Greek reception camps, organised by the Greek-Dutch NGO Connect by Music. The concert will be held at a school in Athens which participates in the ‘Schools for All’ programme. This programme promotes the integration and acceptance in Greek schools of children from refugee backgrounds. After the concert, King Willem-Alexander will visit a home for Ukrainian children who came to Greece after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Queen Máxima will visit a home for girls who arrived in Greece as unaccompanied minor refugees. The home was opened in 2020 with the Netherlands’ support.

The second day of the state visit will conclude with a performance by the Nederlands Danstheater in the Megaron Mousikis, hosted by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.

Wednesday 2 November: Thessaloniki

The last day of the visit will take place in Greece’s second largest city Thessaloniki. On Wednesday morning the King and Queen will attend an economic session on sustainability and agriculture at LABattoir, at which the King will give a speech. This will be followed by a presentation on the rich history of the city, which has been at the crossroads of cultures for centuries. The city’s mayor, Konstantinos Zervas, will meet the King and Queen in Aristotelous Square and tell them more about Thessaloniki’s ongoing transforming into a sustainable and liveable city. The party will cycle to the historical White Tower, where the mayor will take their leave of the royal couple.

The final programme element will be a visit to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, during which the Dutch embassy’s ‘Entrepreneurial University’ programme will be discussed. This initiative promotes the sharing of knowledge and experience on entrepreneurship education and innovation by Dutch and Greek universities. The King and Queen will meet with deputy education minister Angelos Syrigos and the rectors of Thessaloniki’s two largest universities – the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Macedonia – which are involved in the programme.

The actor Anthony Dawson was born on October 18th 1916 in Edinburgh.

He was born Anthony Douglas Gillon Dawson to Ida Violet (Kittel) and Eric Francis Dawson. His father was Scottish and his mother was of German and English descent.

Following Royal Academy of Dramatic Art training and World War II service, he made his film debut in 1943's They Met in the Dark. He went on to appear in such classic British films as The Way to the Stars , The Queen of Spades and The Wooden Horse, before moving to America in the early 1950′s

Dawson made his breakthrough in the Alfred Hitchcock classic Dial M for Murder. He was excellent as Lesgate, seedy ex-Cambridge classmate of would-be wife murderer Wendice played by Ray Milland. Dawson gave similarly sinister performances in the thriller Midnight Lace, where he menaced hapless Doris Day, and the Terence Fisher-directed Hammer horror The Curse of the Werewolf as Count Siniestro. In another film by this director, the James Bond classic Dr. No, Dawson played the geologist Prof. R.J.Dent, a henchman of the title character who attempts to assassinate the hero, then finds out to his cost what Bond's "license to kill" really means. Dawson was also the first screen incarnation of Bond villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld (in From Russia with Love and Thunderball, though the viewer only sees his hands stroking a white cat and hears the voice of Austrian actor Eric Pohlmann.

Other films included They Were Not Divided, Valley of Eagles, The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders, Triple Cross , Red Sun, Inchon and The Jigsaw Man, all directed by Irishman Terence Young, who also directed Dr No. Young cast him in 14 of his films in total.

A highly capable, immediately recognizable actor, Dawson deserved better roles than came his way after the mid-1960s. He eventually ended up playing small parts in minor Italian films and European co-production. Dawson continued acting right into the 90′s his final role was as the Marquess of Bath in the mini-series Selling Hitler in 1991.

An interesting footnote to Dawson's career are his unpublished memoirs, "Rambling Recollections", in which he vividly recalls meeting Hitchcock after first arriving in Hollywood. This took place at a dinner party given by the director at Perino's Restaurant in Los Angeles. Also present were 'Dial M' co-stars Grace Kelly and English actor John Williams. Dawson later escorted Kelly to her residence at Chateau Marmont, an apartment bloc on Sunset Strip. Dawson then intimated that an affair took place, which, however lasted just until Ray Milland arrived on the scene.

Anthony Dawson died in Sussex of cancer at the age of 75 in January 1992.

American actor, known for his work as Edmund Grey on the daytime soap opera All My Children. .Callahan portrayed Leo Russell on the daytime soap General Hospital from 1984 to 1985, then as Eric Stavros on the prime time series Falcon Crest from 1986 to 1988, and Craig Hunt on the daytime soap Santa Barbara from 1989 to 1991. He played Edmund Grey, his best known role, on All My Children from 1992 to 2005. Callahan also appeared as Edmund, with co-star Esta TerBlanche, in a 1997 episode of the sitcom Spin City called "My Life is a Soap Opera". By 1977, The Beatles had long since gone their separate ways and while Paul McCartney was enjoying great success with Wings, John Lennon had disappeared up his own arse with Yoko Ono and nobody really gave a shit what Ringo Starr was up to. George Harrison, though, was a real petrol head. Barry [Sheene] had met him on the London scene and would often invite him to hang out at the circuits and watch us race. In turn, George would invite us down to Friar Park, his house in Henley-on-Thames, and we got to hang out there with other well-known celebrities of the time, like Eric Idle from Monty Python. I always remember George had a great love of gardens and his place in Henley was absolutely stunning, with a cave in it full of stalactites and stalagmites. He also had a huge garage, lined up with all kinds of exotic Ferraris and Porsches.

George was such a gentle guy who had so much admiration for us and what we did, although he didn’t think much of us as singers. On one occasion he invited us down to his studio to sing on the backing track of a song he had written about motor racing called ‘Faster’. Sadly, no amount of knob twiddling on that big desk of his was enough to convince him that we could become singers, any more than he could become a racer, and even though I felt I had mastered the triangle by the time we finished we all agreed to stick to our day jobs, if that’s what you could call them.

So when I got fired by Suzuki, George said in his gentle Liverpudlian way: ‘Ah, don’t worry our Stavros, I’ll buy you a few tyres and cover your fuel and that so you can keep racing.’ Sure enough, later that winter I got a message telling me to head down to the offices of Dark Horse Records and Harrisongs in Sloane Square, where a very smart, prim and proper lady handed me a cheque, written out by the record label, for £50,000. ‘You are the third person this week and it’s only Tuesday!’ she smiled, shaking her head. George was a great supporter of numerous causes and I was lucky to be one of the chosen ones.

I must admit I wasn’t into The Beatles as such, but then I wasn’t really much into music. I was ignorant of it and still am.

Bitter Winterは2018年5月にコンテンツの配信を開始しているが、8月までには中国共産党から「国外の敵対的なウェブサイト」として標的にされた。私たちが、特定の宗教を信仰している、または少数民族であるという理由だけで、中国政府が大勢の人々を投獄し、教化し、苦痛を与え、拷問し、殺害までしているという現実を公表しているためだ。また、中国共産党はBitter Winterを「敵」と見なし、毛沢東主席の有名な思想戦略である「1人に罰を与え、100人に教える」の名の下に「誰も真実を話してはならない」と脅しをかけ、Bitter Winterに対する「再教育」運動に着手した（毛沢東が本当にこの言葉を口にしたかに関しては疑問もあるが、文化大革命期に、これを何度も実行に移したことは確かだ）。習近平現国家主席は、毛沢東の偉大さに対抗しようと、1人ではなく、45人に罰を与えた。

45人というのは、2018年8月から12月にかけて中国共産党が逮捕したBitter Winterの記者と協力者の人数だ（実際には7月の時点で、既に逮捕者がでていた）。

中国本土で、共産党による信教の自由の弾圧および人権の侵害に関する出来事を撮影した、または、情報を集めたことが逮捕の理由であった。通常、記者らは拘留され、「国家機密の漏洩」や「国外勢力の侵入への加担」の疑いで取り調べを受ける。一部の記者は「法律学習所」に送られ、強制的な教化を受ける。また、拷問と虐待を受ける記者もいる。

正義と自由のための世界へ向けた嘆願

逮捕に関する衝撃的なニュースは海外のメディアで何度も取り上げられた。その後、10を超えるNGOや団体の代表者が公の場で中国政府を問題視し、信教の自由の欧州異宗教間フォーラム（European Interreligious Forum for Religious Freedom）が提示した、敬意を表しながらも毅然とした内容の嘆願書に署名した。この団体はパリを拠点に活動し、フランスのサイエントロジー教会の代表者であるエリック・ルー（Eric Roux）氏が運営委員会の会長を務める。この嘆願書は2019年1月21日に以下の名に送られた。国連の信教の自由に関する特別報告者を務めるアフメド・シャヒード（Ahmed Shaheed）博士、欧州連合（EU）外務・安全保障政策上級代表のフェデリカ・モゲリーニ（Federica Mogherini）氏、欧州評議会の人権弁務官のドゥーニャ・ミヤトビッチ（Dunja Mijatović）氏、欧州連合人権特使を務めるスタヴロス・ランブリニディス（Stavros Lambrinidis）氏、宗教または信仰の自由のEU特使のヤン・フィゲル（Jan Figel）氏、意見と表現の自由の権利の推進と保護に関する国連特別報告者を務めるデビッド・ケイ（David Kaye）氏、欧州議会副議長であり、欧州連合の機能に関する条約の第17条の実行責任者であるマイレッド・マックギネス（Mairead McGuiness）氏、欧州議会にて宗教または信仰の自由に関するインターグループ（EP Intergroup on Freedom of Religion or Belief）で共同議長を務める欧州議会議員のデニス・デ・ヨング（Denis De Jong）氏とピーター・ファン・ダレン（Peter Van Dalen）氏に送られた。

この嘆願書は「私たちは様々な宗教の団体であり、高度な多様性を象徴しているといえます。教義や政治に関して互いに合意する点はほとんどありませんが、全ての信仰および無神論における信教の自由の重要性は全員が同��意見を持っています。信教の自由は文化を強化し、安定した民主社会、そして、市民社会や経済の成長および社会の調和を含む民主社会の基盤となる要素を提供します。そのため、宗教の過激主義を先制攻撃し、弱体化させる事ができるという意味で、テロリズムに対する究極の武器でもあるのです」と記している。さらに「一党独裁政権が何よりも恐れるもの、それは報道の自由です。一党独裁政権は、あらゆる手段を駆使して、自由な報道により、悪事が国際的に知られないようにする必要を理解しています」と続けている。こういった理由により、署名者は「民主主義体制のもとにある各国の政権、国際機関およびメディアに、恣意的に拘留されているBitter Winterの記者を速やかに開放し、人権および報道の自由に関して、自ら署名した国際協定に従うよう中国に呼び掛けること」を要請した。

習近平主席への書簡

逮捕されたBitter Winterの記者に対する懸念は、中国共産党総書記であり、中国の国家主席でもある習近平氏宛ての書簡のなかでも表されていた。この書簡は、中華人民共和国における全ての宗教の尊重および信教の自由を求めるものだ。これは、イタリアのローマを拠点に活動する信教の自由の欧州連盟（European Federation for Freedom of Belief）が2018年10月9日に立ち上げた新しい取り組みであり、10のNGOが署名した。なお、この団体の理事長を務めるのは人権派弁護士のアレッサンドロ A. アミカレッリ氏（Alessandro A. Amicarelli）である。

この書簡には次のようなことが記されいる「このような恐ろしい現実を明らかにする新聞記者や文化の擁護者らは、深刻な脅威に晒されています。例えば、2018年7月中旬には雑誌『Bitter Winter』の数名の記者と情報提供者が脅威に晒されました。[…]これは、人権侵害を堂々と批判した罪で「有罪」とされたこのメディアを黙らせるため、警察が特別に計画した捜査によるものです。[…]結局のところ、歴史に刻まれているように、宗教への暴力的な弾圧は、新しい劇的な社会の混乱、不安および争いが生まれていることを反映しているにすぎません」。だからこそ、「私たちは公に、この不寛容な姿勢と弾圧を今すぐにやめること、法の支配と憲法の施行が中華人民共和国にて完全に回復させること、[そして]、全ての市民と個人が、禁止されたり義務を押し付けられたりせず、宗教の活動を自由に行えることを望み、願い、要請します。[…]署名者らは、中華人民共和国で差別と偏見を助長させた可能性がある誤解を是正するため、国際人権法の規定からヒントを得た、そして、この分野で成し遂げた成功事例を基にした助言と指導を提供する用意があります」

Bitter Winterが情報を取得し、検証する方法

5ヶ月に満たない期間で45人の記者が逮捕された事実は、重大であり、表現と報道の自由に関連するあらゆる統計を大幅に変えるものである。だからこそ、当然ではあるが、逮捕のニュースを取り上げたメディアから、私たちがどのように情報を入手し、検証しているのかしばしば尋ねられる。メディアは私たちを疑っているわけではないが、高度に洗練された管理体制が敷かれている中国で、とりわけ生活に息苦しさを感じ、基本的な活動をするにも社会からの圧力がかかる一部の地域と省で、どのようにして情報を入手し、検証しているのか知りたいというのは理解できる。

ということで、現状を鑑み、まずはBitter Winterの読者の方々に対して中国からニュースが届く仕組みを説明し、その後、逮捕された45人の記者の最新の消息を伝えたい。

一点目に関して、Bitter Winterの運営の仕組みを再度、説明することが重要と思われる。Bitter Winterはイタリアのトリノを拠点に活動する新興宗教研究センター（Center for Studies on New Religions、以下 CESNUR）により創刊されたオンラインの雑誌である。この雑誌の編集主幹は、創設者でもあるマッシモ・イントロヴィーニャ（Massimo Introvigne）教授が務めている。イントロヴィーニャ教授は、国際的に知られるイタリアの宗教社会学者である。CESNURは世界中の少数派の宗教、とりわけ新宗教運動の諸団体への対応において30年の経験を持ち、中国本土および国外の中国人社会の広範なコネクションのネットワークを頼りにすることができる。Bitter Winterはこのネットワークを活用し、中国のニュース、写真および動画を密かに中国から仕入れるための安全なシステムを作り出した（ただし完全無欠ではない）。ジャーナリズムの専門的な訓練を受けている記者はほんの一握りであり、大半の記者はアマチュアだ。大方、私たちは記者の本名を知らず、仮名しか把握していない。私たちはニュースや素材が信頼に値することを2つの方法で確認している。まず、ほとんどの記者は私たちが知る宗教団体から紹介されている。そして、ニュースの正確さかどうか疑念を持ったときは、中国国外の関連する団体の力を借り、確認するようにしている。例えば、新疆ウイグル自治区に関するニュースは、世界ウイグル会議やその他の欧米のウイグル人の団体に確認を行う。配信されないニュースもある。

記者の逮捕に関するニュースもその他のニュースと同じ経路で届く。逮捕者の本名を知っていたとしても、安全を考慮して本名を明かすことはしない。本名を明かすと起訴に有利となり、記者の協力者を危険に晒す可能性があるためだ。他のメディアの活動のあり方と異なることは、私たちも理解している。しかし、だからこそ本名での署名を求めていたら、絶対に入手できないスクープ動画や写真を配信することができるのである。写真の品質が全てを物語っている。

一部の記者は今もなお行方不明

二点目、逮捕された記者のその後の消息に関して、（情報の確認と再確認を経て）逮捕、拘留および現状に関する詳しい情報を公開できるようになった。

新疆ウイグル自治区では22人が逮捕され、そのうちの4人しか釈放されていない。その他の18人の具体的な状況は不明であり、居場所さえも分からない記者もいる。

中国東部の浙江省では3人の記者が逮捕された。1人は強制的な教化を経て、既に釈放されている。別の記者はホテルに連行され、教化を受けているが、その期間がどれほどになるかは不明だ。もう一人の記者は13日にわたって拘留された後、釈放された。

中国南東部の福建省では4人の記者が逮捕された。1人は33日間の拘留後に釈放された。別の記者は1ヵ月に渡り拘留された後に釈放された。残りの2人の記者はホテルで強制的な教化を受けた。この2人の記者は「第一レベル」の容疑者に分類され、家族との面会を禁じられている。現在も拘留中であり、うち１人は拷問を受けたという報告を得ている。2018年のバチカンと中国間の合意に否定的なカトリックの司祭に関する資料を送っていたため、特に危険と判断されたのではないかと私たちは考えている。

中国北部の陝西省では4人の記者が逮捕された。そのうちの１人は中国共産党の文書を公��したため「違法に国家機密を海外に提供した疑い」で逮捕された。この記者は現地の拘留所で拘束されていた。別の記者は保釈され、現在、監視の対象になっている。3人目の記者は逮捕後、市の拘留所に連行されたが、現在の状況は不明だ。残りの1人は既に釈放されている。

中国中央部の河南省では、十字架が破壊される模様を写真および動画に撮ったとして12人の記者が逮捕され、その後、全員釈放された。警察は記者らがBitter Winterに資料を送った証拠を見つけることができなかった。

他にも私たちが把握していないケースが存在する可能性はある。

正式な起訴に関しては、拘留中の記者の詳しい情報を入手していない。しかし、私たちが得た情報から、先程も申し上げた通り、一部の記者は「海外勢力による侵入への関与」、「国家権力の転覆」または「国家機密の漏洩」の罪で取り調べを受けていることが推測される。しかし、今のところ公的に起訴されたという情報は届いていない。証拠が不十分であることが理由と思われる。

釈放された１人の記者によると、集めた資料が公開されなかった場合、「海外勢力による侵入への関与」および「国家権力の転覆」の罪を問われないようだ。しかし、ニュースは既に配信されているため、起訴され、有罪判決を言い渡される可能性が高い。公の場で有罪判決が下った場合（今後の数ヶ月間で判決が出る可能性が高い）、中国の他の人々の安全に影響が及ばない場合、その情報を公開する決断を私たちは下すかもしれない。今後の情報に注目してもらいたい。
