I just got a submission for a kid’s book by a self published author for work (children’s librarian) and instead of being mean I’m just going to give some advice to aspiring children’s authors.
1. Please read some picture books. Many people write books for kids cause they think it’s easy. It’s not. They never get the voice. They think they can tell a bland story and bludgeon the audience with morals but that’s not compelling. Just because your book has pictures does not mean a 3 year old will want to sit through 10 sentence paragraphs every page. Go look at Eric Carle, Janell Cannon, Matthew Cherry, James Dean, etc. See how they do it. Kids can tell, man.
2. Do not get mad when you try to bring your book to your local library and they don’t want to add it to the collection. Libraries have collections policies you should be aware of before trying to pawn off your work. Some libraries have dedicated local author sections. Others don’t accept any self published material because they receive literally hundreds of submissions a month. Shelf space is limited. Time to review and order material is limited.
2a. Do not submit AI generated spam. Goes without saying.
3. PAY AN ARTIST! Seriously, I’ve gotten books that look like someone took the clip art from Canva and threw them together into a book. Sometimes it is actual clip art. Sometimes, this is by very serious artists who are probably not being paid much if anything to do the work and sometimes it’s by the author themselves. The art is the biggest selling point of a picture book. Do not skimp because you think your story/message is SOOO powerful it can overcome looking dull and like it was made with the cast of bitmojis.
4. Do not put fake awards on the cover. It just makes the book look faker than it already is.
5. Hire an editor. Your friends, partners, family, etc are fine to bounce ideas off of but if you’re serious, hire someone to read your book and make pointed critiques. You need critiques and feedback.

The Rev. James Reynold Cannon, 83, lately of Travelers Rest, SC, passed away at his home on May 6, 2023, after entering hospice care in January. Jim, as he was known to family and friends, was born on March 27, 1940, in Wilmington, NC to the Rev. Abram Cannon and Magalene Burney Cannon of Wilmington.
Jim left school in ninth grade to enter the workforce and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1959 before receiving a medical discharge. He earned his GED while in the military, and later went on to attend Bob Jones University from 1971 to 1976, where he studied to enter the ministry.
In 1959, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Marion Dale Millinor Cannon and went on to have three children: Amelia, who is married to Pastor William Harper; Michael, who married the former Sheila Smith; and Gregory, who is married to the former Susie Roper.
He later married Dorothy Dorman in 1989 and two adult children were added to his family: David, who was married to his wife Bobbi Jo, and Trisha, who is married to Cary Alexander.
Jim worked mainly in sales before entering the ministry at the age of 36. He then became the pastor of Summit View Baptist Church in Greenville in 1976. He served as pastor of that congregation for seven years. He later became the director of the Greenville Rescue Mission, where he served from 1983 to 1986.
In 1990, after his marriage to Dot Cannon, Jim began a new ministry in Greenville called LifeSearch. This ministry worked mainly with homeless men who wanted to seek a new life in Christ and regain a place in the workforce and the community. As an outgrowth of the ministry, Jim began Faith Bible Fellowship church and the Academy of Life in Greenville. In 1998 he also founded KingsPointe Academy, a low-cost Christian school designed to offer an affordable Christian educational option to the families to which he ministered. That school continues to operate as part of the ministry of Bethel Calvary Baptist Church in Taylors.
In 2001, his ministries then moved to Travelers Rest where he also founded KingsPointe Industries to provide jobs for those who participated in the Academy of Life. He retired in 2021 at the age of 81.
Jim's love of God and service to his fellow man were hallmarks of his life and are legacies he sought to pass down to all his family.
Jim was predeceased by his father, Abram Cannon; his mother, Magalene Cannon Downing; his brothers, Kenny, Charles, and Bob; his former wife, Marion Dale Cannon; and his stepson, David Dorman. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Cannon of Travelers Rest; his sisters, Carolyn Fowler of Benson, NC, Margaret "Mug" Anderson of Belville, NC, and Betty Coleman of Wilmington, NC; his daughter, Amelia Harper of Nashville, NC; his sons, Mike Cannon and Greg Cannon of Anderson, SC; his stepdaughter, Trisha Alexander of Greenville, SC; his grandchildren, Jonathan Harper (wife, Jennifer), Bradley Harper, Nicholas Dorman (wife Nickole), Ian Dorman, Alan Jacob Alexander and Lucas Alexander of Greenville, SC; Thomas Harper of Tallahasee, Florida; Andrew Harper of Lacey, WA; Keren Harper Turgeon (husband, Lane) of Andover, KS; Michael Von Cannon (wife Jordan) of Fort Myers, FL; Debra Prongue (husband Matt) and Ariel Sisler (husband Anthony) of Anderson, SC; Brandon Cannon (wife Megan) of Sacramento, CA; Brianna Walsh (husband Eric) of Atlanta, GA; Joshua Dorman (wife Chrissy) of West Virginia; Nathaniel Alexander (wife Sarah) of North Carolina and 14 great-grandkids: Evangeline Harper; Wally and Freddie Von Cannon; Matthew and Greyson Prongue; Mackenzie Jennings; Julian and Layla Sisler; Robin Dale Cannon, and Sarah, Stephanie, Daniel, Carter and Cooper Dorman. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their descendents.
A visitation with the family will be held at Bethel Calvary Baptist Church at 11 Easy Street in Taylors, SC at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11 with a memorial service to follow at 5:30 p.m. The church will provide a meal after the service.
Jim will be laid to rest at 1 p.m. Friday, May 12 in a family plot in the New Hollywood Cemetery in Lumberton, NC. Anyone is welcome to attend either service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to KingsPointe Academy in care of Bethel Calvary Baptist Church, 11 Easy Street in Taylors. Donations may be made online at www.bethelcalvary.com .

“yeah, i tend to be. now, are you gonna tell me what you want?” was eric running out of patience? close to it, because.. how could he not be, he wondered? it seemed as if the other wanted to drag him into yet another one of his games and no, that was not happening. nope. he had already lost far too much, he had already had far too much being taken away from him and no, it was not going to happen again. not in the slightest and not ever. “… i can’t come back to work. you know that. they haven’t given me leave to do it. still mentally unstable for having spent nearly three years on that cell thanks to that.. bitch.” okay, cool it. cool it. not the time nor place to think about how much he fucking wanted to hurt young for what she had done. right? not at all. just.. breath. “cut the crap and just get straight to the point, man. come on.” @xtinyslip

“we’ll see about that.” if history was anything to go by then it confirmed that matthews was a royal idiot and yet... he’d survived all that time. he’d lasted. hoffman knew that wasn’t something to just shrug off. “why? where else have you got to be?” he wasn’t working and as far as hoffman knew his boy hadn’t been found here yet. for the kid’s sake it was probably best that way. “they... meaning me? all it takes is a word from me and they’d work something out.” it may have sounded like a bluff, an over exaggeration of his sway in that department but it wasn’t. thanks to strahm his position gave him that control. did he really want matthews running around like a loose cannon under his watch? not particularly but he needed to give him something. “scars i have are bad enough. no one can imagine what you were put through.” oh, he could. he knew exactly what the other had been put through. he’d been there for some of it. hoffman placed the file he’d pulled together last minute on young, dropping it on the table in front of him. “after what she did to you. to me. to all those people? and she gets to spend her days sat cosy in her penthouse. MAKES YOU THINK DOESN’T IT?” @lcvenderhcze

Waiting for Godot - Broadway - November 24, 2013 (Opening Night) (Lanelle's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Aidan Gemme (The Boy), Billy Crudup (Lucky), Ian McKellen (Estragon), Patrick Stewart (Vladimir), Shuler Hensley (Pozzo)

Some changes for Broadway from the previous Goodman Theater production. Excellent performances from the entire cast with clear picture and great sound throughout; very good video. 2 DVDs. A War Paint - Broadway - April 29, 2017 (Matinee) (NYCG8R's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Patti LuPone (Helena Rubinstein), Christine Ebersole (Elizabeth Arden), John Dossett (Tommy Lewis), Douglas Sills (Harry Fleming) NOTES: The master gets caught during Face to Face. The theater was really full tonight so there are a good number of heads in this video, but they are worked around to the best of my ability. This is a super small theater (less than 160 seats) and at times the cast members were definitely singing to the camera and honestly giving their best performances because of it. All of the things on the upper level (the bathroom, the pathway, and the kitchen) are captured perfectly, and the zooms on the lower level (the living room and bench) look good as well. Obviously because this is a murder mystery kind of show the lighting can get a little bit dark, but my camera handles low lighting incredibly well. This is honestly the best video you could expect from this venue We Will Rock You - Germany (Cologne) - August, 2005 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alex Melcher (Galileo), Vera Bolten (Scaramouche), Brigitte Oelke (Killer Queen), Martin Berger (Khashoggi), Michaela Kovarikova (Meat/Oz), DMJ (Brit/J.B.), James Sbano (Pop/Buddy/Bap), Harald Tauber (Teacher), Willemijn Verkaik NOTES: Multicam proshot We Will Rock You - Utrecht (The Netherlands) - October, 2010 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: John Vooijs (Galileo), Marjolein Teepen (Scaramouche), Pia Douwes (Killer Queen), Paul Donkers (Khashoggi), Floortje Smit (Meat/Oz), Ruud van Overdijk (Brit/J.B.), Rutger le Poole (Pop/Buddy/Bap) NOTES: Good capture. Heads in the way, but also a lot of good close-ups. Dubble DVD! We Will Rock You - West End - February 11, 2003 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Tony Vincent (Galileo), Hannah Jane Fox (Scaramouche), Sharon D Clarke (Killer Queen), Alexander Hanson (Khashoggi), Kerry Ellis (Meat/Oz), Nigel Clauzner (Brit/J.B.), Nigel Planer (Pop/Buddy/Bap) The Wedding Singer - Broadway - April 1, 2006 (Preview) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Stephen Lynch (Robbie Hart), Laura Benanti (Julia), Matthew Saldivar (Sammy), Kevin Cahoon (George), Rita Gardner (Rosie), Amy Spanger (Holly), Richard H Blake (Glen), Felicia Finley (Linda) NOTES: Includes pictures of outside of the theatre and playbill. This was before the changes were made to the production. Blackouts throughout the show. The Wedding Singer - Off-West End - March 1, 2020 (Matinee) (Closing Night) (Highlights) (queenofthedead's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Kevin Clifton (Robbie Hart), Rhiannon Chesterman (Julia), Ashley Emmerson (Sammy), Andrew Carthy (George), Sandra Dickinson (Rosie), Tara Verloop (Holly), Jonny Fines (Glen), Erin Bell (Linda), Lori Haley Fox (Angie), Andy Brady (David Fonda), Nathan Ryles (Harold Fonda), Jordan Crouch (Donnie), Aimee Moore (Tiffany), Simon Anthony (Shane McDonough), Paris Green (Donatella), Vanessa Grace Lee (Donatella’s Mother), Morgan Jackson (Mookie), Ellie Seaton (Crystal) NOTES: 38 minutes of act 1 of the closing performance, unobstructed. The Best Spy Novels to Read While Stuck at Home
Forty, page-turning spy novels, to Keep you on the edge of your seat. Marked by an exhilarating pace, plenty of dramatic twists, and richly drawn complex protagonists, spy novels are about as riveting as it gets in the library. And while all the excitement of double agents and espionage keeps you at the edge of your seat, these books also offer insight into fascinating and troubling historical periods.
In the name of thrilling reading, no matter what time of year and to wrestle with larger philosophical questions of betrayal, human connection, and the legacy of international conflict, I rounded up 40 of the best spy novels around, to read while stuck at home. Written by former CIA and other intelligence agents and some of the most prolific literary minds of all time, get to know the best spy novels below.
Here are my picks for the best spy novels you have to read while stuck at home.
Rosalie Knecht, Who Is Vera Kelly?
1962 in New York City's Greenwich Village and Argentina. A radio show host is struggling to make ends meet and fit into the underground gay scene when she gets recruited by the CIA to wiretap a crooked congressman in Argentina, and works her way into a radical group of students planning a coup. Think coming-of-age meets historical fiction with a strong female protagonist.
Jason Matthews, Red Sparrow
Modern-day Russia. Dominika Egorova is forced into becoming a secret agent that uses her sultry beauty to seduce an American CIA officer. When she develops genuine feelings for him, her loyalties begin to shift and the plot thickens.
Gina Apostol, Gun Dealer's Daughter
1980s Marcos-era Philippines and modern-day America. Though this book doesn't follow a linear chronology, it reflects Sol's fragmented memory and trauma. As a young woman limited by the comfort of her wealth, she seeks to overthrow the Marcos regime. Spying on the American generals and Philippine elite from her own fancy dinner table, Sol's loyalties struggle between her family, homeland, and her insurgent student friends. Politically charged, lyrical, and eye-opening, this is a must-read.
Helen MacInnes, Agent in Place
New York, Washington, D.C., and the French Riviera during the Cold War. When a Russian spy who's expertly infiltrated Washington society gets his hands on a top-secret NATO memorandum, a high-profile CIA officer's cover is blown in Moscow. Now, everyone is racing against time to uncover who the Russian spy actually is.
Viet Thanh Nguyen, The Sympathizer
1975 Vietnam and Los Angeles, A half-French, half-Vietnamese double agent relocates to America after the fall of Saigon, and betrayal, both personal and political, ensues. At once a love story and a spy novel about the legacy and evils of colonialism, the Vietnam War, and ensuing refugee experience in the U.S. you won't soon forget The Sympathizer. It's satirical, sharp, suspenseful, and poignant.
Joseph Kanon, Leaving Berlin
Post-WWII Berlin, Germany. Alex Meier is a young German Jew who fled to America at the onset of WWII to escape Nazi persecution. But with the Cold War underway, it's the peak of the McCarthy era, and he's pigeon-holed into working undercover in East Berlin for the CIA. It's the only way he won't be deported. But when he gets there, he finds out that his target is the woman he loved and left behind before the war. It's a thought-provoking and action-packed love story.
Joseph Conrad, The Secret Agent
London, late 1800s. A shop-owner gets wrapped up in an anarchist scheme to bomb the Greenwich Observatory, but the plan goes wrong and throws his life into chaos. It raises philosophical questions and is a literary masterpiece, but that doesn't keep it from being a thrilling, entertaining read.
John Le Carré, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Post-WWII Britain. Unhappily retired after a failed mission, an aging officer sets out to catch a traitor who has worked their way into the highest ranks of British intelligence. Full of political and social commentary with a fast-paced plot, there's a reason this is such a classic.
Ian McEwan, The Innocent
Berlin, 1955. A young Englishman living in American-occupied Berlin is commissioned to install the tape recorders that that will wiretap Russians in Soviet-occupied East Berlin. He begins spying on the Americans for the Brits while helping the Americans spy on the Russians. But, he fails as a spy, and the plot becomes more complicated when he falls in love with an older German with a violent, possessive ex-husband.
Lauren Wilkinson, American Spy
Burkina Faso. In the FBI, Marie Mitchell sticks out as a young black woman. In American Spy, Marie wades through a sea of a mostly white male intelligence community, and an assignment to Burkina Faso, where she meets Thomas Sankara, revolutionary president of the landlocked, West African country.
John le Carré, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
Cold War-era Germany. British intelligence agent Alec Leamas should be on his way back to London, but one more job—an undercover mission to topple East German intelligence, leads Leamas back into dangerous territory. In an interview with Electric Literature, author Lauren Wilkinson (author of American Spy) calls this spy novel "terrific."
Susan Hasler, Intelligence
Post-9/11 America, during an election year. Intelligence trails Maddie James, a CIA counterterrorism analyst as she pursues an al-Qaida operation with an eccentric team. Meanwhile, the Administration is more interested in maintaining the message that America is winning the war on terror. According to author Susan Hasler, a former member of the CIA, writing the novel was a way to cope with residual 9/11 period anger.
Valerie Plame, Blowback
Cyprus. Young, blonde CIA operative Vanessa Pierson assumes the identify of a financial adviser in Cyprus on a reconnaissance mission. Her target: An international arms dealer, Bhoot, who is believed to be aiding Iran to bolster its nuclear activities. With an assassin on her trail, Blowback is full of fast-paced action scenes, as well as intimate details that the Washington Post describes "might elude a male writer." Blowback is co-authored by former CIA agent Valerie Plame, and Sarah Lovett.
Stella Rimington, At Risk
Britain. British intelligence taps Liz Carlyle, a scrappy counter terror agent to stop a terrorist attack. And the person of interest is traveling under a British passport, an "invisible." Author Stella Rimington relies on her former life as a high-ranking spy to author At Risk, Rimington's debut novel.
Patricia Wentworth, Hue and Cry
London. Before Mally Lee's wedding in six months, she accepts a position as governess to a shipping magnate's young daughter. Upon entering the Peterson grounds, however, Lee will be accused of being a thief and spy. Mally flees, leaving her fiancé in emotional shambles and private investigators in hot pursuit. What has Mally stumbled into?
Irène Némirovsky, The Courilof Affair
18th century Russia. Léon M, son of Russian revolutionaries, is tasked with assassinating the ruthless Valerian Alexandrovitch Courilof, Russian Minister of Education. Fronting as Courilof's personal physician, Léon M works his way into Courilof's summer house, and as his relationship with Courilof grows, learns things are more complicated than they seem.
Stephenie Meyer, The Chemist
United States. A page-turning tale of an ex-agent on the run from her former employer (a clandestine, unnamed agency). To clear her name, she accepts one more job that will put her in an even more precarious position. But, the job goes south. What now?
Jennifer Chiaverini, The Spymistress
Civil War-era America. Elizabeth Van Lew is a Union loyalist living in the Confederacy, and she will risk it all to help build the Richmond underground, break free inmates from Confederate Libby Prison, and gather military intelligence under the pretense of humanitarian aid. In this historical novel inspired by a true story, Van Lew's contributions during the Civil War comes alive.
John Buchan, The Thirty-Nine Steps
Over a century old, and Buchan’s adventure novel still passes muster. The first of five novels featuring an all-action hero with a stiff upper lip, Richard Hannay, this is unpredictable, exciting fare – and will keep you guessing until the last page.
Graham Greene, The Quiet American
A novel depicting French colonialism being uprooted in Vietnam may not sound like the most thrilling you’ve ever heard, but in the hands of English literary giant Graham Greene, anything is possible. Featuring British journalism, undercover CIA agents, illegitimate marriage and a light smattering of car bombs, there is action balanced with considered philosophy – and the book is all the better for it.
Frederick Forsyth, The Day of the Jackal
Telling the tale of a professional assassin – tasked by a French dissident organisation to kill the President of France – Forsyth’s novel was met with praise when it was first published, and remains so to this day. Of course, the 1973 film adaptation starring the suave Edward Fox did nothing to help with the stories success...
Robert Ludlum, The Bourne Identity
We all know Matt Damon’s award-winning portrayal of Ludlum’s most famous character, but how many of us have read the novels? If not, you’ll be glad to know that these tales of amnesia, backstabbing and action are just as thrilling on the page – and that Eric Van Lustbader has added to the cannon, with an additional 11 Bourne books available to read.
Tom Clancy, The Hunt for Red October
Tom Clancy’s debut novel remains his best. Introducing Jack Ryan, the CIA analyst throw into the field, it one again tackles Soviet themes and the adventures of a group of US Navy officers taking possession of a nuclear submarine. It’s thrilling fare, and Clancy’s talent to bring the appeal of classic espionage into modern-day storytelling is impressive to say the least.
Len Deighton, The IPCRESS File
Len Deighton’s first spy novel, like Tom Clancy’s, is also his best. More famous for the Michael Caine-fronted film spun from its pages, this original novel involves Cold War brainwashing, a United State atomic weapons test and an extended sequence in Lebanon – and makes use of spy novel trope to be employed for years to come: that of the nameless protagonist.
John le Carré, The Tailor of Panama
He is Harry Pendel: Exclusive tailor to Panama’s most powerful men. Informant to British Intelligence. The perfect spy in a country rife with corruption and revolution. What his “handlers” don’t realize is that Harry has a hidden agenda of his own. Deceiving his friends, his wife, and practically himself, he’ll weave a plot so fabulous it exceeds his own vivid imagination. But when events start to spin out of control, Harry is suddenly in over his head—thrown into a lethal maze of politics and espionage, with unthinkable consequences...
Eric Ambler, A Coffin for Dimitrios
A chance encounter with a Turkish colonel leads Charles Latimer, the author of a handful of successful mysteries, into a world of sinister political and criminal maneuvers. At first merely curious to reconstruct the career of the notorious Dimitrios, whose body has been identified in an Istanbul morgue, Latimer soon finds himself caught up in a shadowy web of assassination, espionage, drugs, and treachery that spans the Balkans.
Ken Follett, Eye of the Needle
“His code name was “The Needle.” He was a German aristocrat of extraordinary intelligence—a master spy with a legacy of violence in his blood, and the object of the most desperate manhunt in history... But his fate lay in the hands of a young and vulnerable English woman, whose loyalty, if swayed, would assure his freedom—and win the war for the Nazis...“
Olen Steinhauer, The Tourist
Milo Weaver has tried to leave his old life of secrets and lies behind by giving up his job as a “tourist” for the CIA―an undercover agent with no home, no identity. Now he’s working a desk at the agency’s New York headquarters. But when the arrest of a long-sought-after assassin sets off an investigation into a colleague, exposing new layers of intrigue in his old cases, he has no choice but to go back undercover and find out who’s been behind it all from the very beginning.
Graham Greene, Our Man in Havana
MI6’s man in Havana is Wormold, a former vacuum-cleaner salesman turned reluctant secret agent out of economic necessity. To keep his job, he files bogus reports based on Charles Lamb’s Tales from Shakespeare and dreams up military installations from vacuum-cleaner designs. Then his stories start coming disturbingly true...
Erskine Childers, The Riddle of the Sands
The classic spy novel by Erskine Childers, credited as the first work of modern espionage fiction. Set in pre-World War I Europe, two British subject, Carruthers and Davies, uncover secret German activity suggesting a prelude to war.
Tom Bradby, Secret Service
What if your next national leader was secretly a Russian spy? Kate Henderson is a high-ranking officer of England's MI6—and a recent undercover operation has revealed explosive intel. Russia has infiltrated the upper levels of UK politics by co-opting a senior politician. To make matters worse, there may be a mole moving through the halls of England's Secret Intelligence Service. With an election looming, Kate is in a race to expose the double agents and save those she holds dear. But who can be trusted? Acclaimed British author and journalist Tom Bradby excels at crafting pulse-pounding narratives set against the backdrop of true-life events. In Secret Service, the author delivers a tense and timely spy thriller where the greatest threat comes from within.
James Grady, Condor: The Short Takes
In this novella, the iconic CIA operative Condor is back in a series of new adventures. New York Times-bestselling author James Grady brings back his famous spy but in a surprising setting. Six Days of the Condor was popular during the paranoid era of the 1970s as Condor was a spy in his prime who ruthlessly and heroically deals with a conspiracy within the United States government. In Condor: The Short Takes, Grady presents an aged Condor who finds himself in a modern setting and with 21st century threats. The original framework is present but the stories are far more intimate and less straightforward. Condor finds himself involved in cyber threats and the 9/11 aftermath; perhaps an even bigger scandal than the Cold War. The master of intrigue brings you six stories that are sure to leave you on the edge of your seat; can Condor soar over the obstacles or will he falter and fall? This is perfect for any fans of the hit original series, Condor!
John Lawton, A Little White Death
A social and sexual revolution was had throughout most of the world during the 1960s, and England was no exception. John Lawton's novel implants remnants of this revolution into the third book of his Inspector Troy series. This novel follows Inspector Troy—despite many career set-backs—as he rises to the head of CID at Scotland Yard. However, before the chief detective can celebrate, he finds himself deep into a scandal reminiscent of the Profumo affair. Troy becomes entangled in a web as he attempts to battle illness, police politics, and the Establishment. He must focus on protecting those affected by the aftermath of the scandal and discover who murdered the two key players in the scandal.
Brian Freemantle, Charlie M
Charlie Muffin came into the British secret service in the early 1950s, when the desperate government was in search of more foot soldiers in the impending Cold War. They decided to look into the middle class for the first time and found what they were looking for in Charlie. Even though he is a working-class, state-educated man from Manchester, Charlie has been one of the most effective agents of the secret service. However, times are changing as Cambridge and Oxford graduates are ready to take over again. They have decided it's time to sacrifice Charlie, but he won't go down easy. This exhilarating novel of double-crossing is excellent for fans of le Carre or Deighton!
Patricia Wentworth, Dead or Alive
In this suspenseful tale by British crime author Patricia Wentworth, Meg O'Hara's husband Robin disappears on the day she plans to divorce him. A year after the presumed body of her dead husband is found, someone breaks into her apartment to leave a shocking message. Now Meg is left to uncover if her husband is dead or alive. As more cryptic messages appear, Meg is certain that someone—maybe even her husband—is trying to get to her...but no one takes her seriously. Well, except for Bill Coverdale. For years Bill has been deeply in love with Meg, so he sets out to get to the bottom of things. Together, they find themselves embroiled in blackmail, forgery, and murder all while facing an unstoppable criminal mastermind.
John Altman, A Game of Spies
In preparation of Germany's invasion of France, England needs to gather classified information on Germany...and there's only one highly skilled spy who can get the job done: Agent William Hobbs. During the bleak winter of 1940, Hobbs meets the naive Eva Bernhardt and seduces her into working for the British secret service. Smitten with Agent Hobbs and disenchanted by Hitler, Eva agrees to seek information from the Führer’s inner circle. As Hobbs and Eva plunge into the world of espionage, intrigue, and deception, Eva quickly transforms into a tough and cynical operative, using her feminine guile and manipulative skills to obtain crucial knowledge. A Game of Spies is a thrilling tale with an even more electrifying conclusion as Eva holds her future, and the future of the entire war, in her hands.
John Lawton, Then We Take Berlin
Meet Joe Wilderness, orphaned by World War II - and certain that this fact will allow him to operate outside of society's bounds and rules for the rest of his life. But when he gets recruited into MI6, he discovers a fast-paced life in Berlin that will force him to go to extremes to accomplish his missions. This stylish thriller is a beloved read, best for fans of Eric Ambler.
Helen MacInnes, The Salzburg Connection
MacInnes may be best known for her first novel, Above Suspicion, but in The Salzburg Connection, written over 20 years later, she had become an expert in espionage beyond compare. In this spy vs spy vs lawyer tale, Richard Bryant, British agent, is one of the few who knows about a secret cache of Nazi information. When he’s found dead, an American lawyer gets caught up in the quest to find the information, before it gets in the wrong hands.
Gayle Lynds, Masquerade
Lynds became popular thanks to a collaborative series with Robert Ludlum, Covert-One, but she had been honing her craft long before The Altman Code’s debut. Like Jason Bourne, Liz Sansborough wakes up one morning to discover that she no longer remembers her life as a CIA agent. Luckily, her lover, Gordon, is there to explain what she has forgotten. But can Gordon–or the world–be trusted? There’s an international assassin after Liz, and she’ll need to figure out whom she can trust quickly.
Chris Pavone, The Travelers
A more recent addition, but one worthy of the list, The Travelers by Chris Pavone sees travel writer Will Rhodes is on assignment for Travelers magazine in the wine region of Argentina when a beautiful woman makes him an offer he can’t refuse. Drawn into a tangled web of international intrigue – like so many thriller protagonists before him – this is a standout in a modern world of throwaway poolside paperbacks.

That Wasn't Dark
This story was inspired by: https://thegirlwhoescapedgallifrey19.tumblr.com/post/188853678488/impersonator-ahwm-theory
Note: For the sake of the story lets say Eric played through AHWM. This story and my Yancy is Eric's Oldest brother are apart of a series so come of the things mentioned in this might not make sense.
Date: 06/11/19. Time: 7:35 pm - 9:04 pm
Yancy was confused when Eric grabbed his left arm and started to make notes in a notebook, looking at his tattoo every now and then. He had no idea where it had come from even though he felt like he should.
"Matthew really out did himself this time. I wonder if the fan's have realised theu didn't actually see Dark in ending 6. I have to say being eaten by a worm things, crushed by a boulder and being shot out of a cannon was rather painful," Eric muttered jotting down a few more notes ignoring the confused looks he was getting from the main egos. Yancy found the smile on Mark's face was unsettling and creepy and made Yancy want to run and hide but he couldn't due to Eric grip on his wrist
"What do you mean Eric? Who's Matthew?" Yancy questioned starting at his little brother, he had been acting strange ever since they had walked into he had walked into the meeting room, wanting to show Yancy and Illinois the "Murder List" and they had found themselves two years in the past. In the middle of a meeting.
Dark had looked like he wanted to murder Eric for what he was saying about Celine being a cold calculating bitch you would do anything and hurt anyone to get what she wanted. Eric hadn't seemed scared or concerned.
"Matthew is the one who created us. Well done Mark, you managed to convince me and any of the fan's that you actually were Dark," Eric answered absentmindedly as he turned to look at Mark whose grin was frankly unnerving as his eyes turned black and red and his image cracked. The person standing behind him was surrounded by a red aura. Yancy shivered scared.
"Thank you. Good to know it worked. I was trying to be convincing. It was Matthew's idea," Mark answered, his two-toned voice sending shivers down Yancy and Illinois spines. There was something threatening about Mark and they weren't quite sure what it was.
"You were. I wonder if they'll notice the difference but then again. I didn't notice it. Likely due to the white suit. Your scarily good at pretending to be Dark. Its kind of alarming really," Eric replied, Yancy and Illinois shared a look wondering what Eric was talking about, they knew there were some things they hadn't been told yet.
"No, I'm just good at pretending to be Dad. Its not the first time I've had to do it. Gotta say though it was a lot of fun and it has been a long time," Mark replied, he looked incredibly pleased with himself, his double still had that unsettling grin on his face. It made Yancy's skin crawl. There was something predatory about it.
"What are you talking about Eric?" Illinois asked cautiously, Eric looked at him, blinking a few times and grabbed Ben's arm with a pleading look. Ben sighed and nodded, projecting a screen above the table and opening a video on YouTube called: A Hiest With Markiplier.
Yancy and Illinois watched in fasinatioj as they went through each video making decisions, Eric grinning when they chose "All Sneaky Like". Not saying anything, just letting them Bim, Dark, Wil, Ed, Howl, Yancy and Illinois chose which path Ben chose. It was amusing watching then react to Mark constantly insisting on splitting up, getting him and themselves killed twice.
The only time he spoke up was to tell them to chose "split up" before the sewer. He sat back and watched there reactions. It was so obvious that it wasn't Dark they were talking to now they he knew. He started to notice the subtle differences.
Mark really was a good actor. They were far to distracted by his white suit and what he was saying to really notice that something wasn't right. There was only a slight amount of blue here and there in the glitch effects but it was mostly red. If had really been Dark then they aura around him would have been red and blue.
Ben paused the video and turned to look at Mark who was watching them with that creepy predatory look and unsettling smile. A cold chill of fear ran his spine. There wasn't mu that could normally scare him but there was something very … unnerving and unsettling about that look.
Mark's double flickered before disappearing and the cold fear and tension in the room disappeared making the egos present blink, confused as to how Mark had managed to do that. Dark was staring at Mark in wonder, he had known Mark was good but he hadn't thought he was that good at pretending to be him. He had actually felt nervous and tense.
If that was what people felt when they first met him them he blame them for being a nervous suttering mess that couldn't string two sentences together let alone words. Normally he usef it to his advantage ut god it made him feel uncomfortable. Likely not as uncomfortable as the other wgos but it was an unpleasant.
"That, is what I'm talking about. That wasn't Dark in the video. Ben, search A Date With Markiplier. There are two videos in that series that should show you what I mean," Eric answered, Ben nodded and opened two more tabs quickly searching how to get to the two videos Eric was after.
It was only after Ben had played the two videos several times did they realise what Eric was getting at. That hadn't been Dark in the "Ignorance is Bliss" ending of A Hiest With Markiplier but Mark.
They knew he was an actor who particular ability was to become whatever character he was playing. So much so they wouldn't realise they were talking to Mark. They had fallen for his act. They had believed he was Dark in AHWM.
"I'd have to ask Matthew but I'm guessing AHWM is before ADWM. The reason for going on the date is because you didn't manage to steal the "box". Your wearing almost the exact same suit in AHWM as you are in a ADWM," Eric commented, Mark laughed and nodded. Matthew had told him this was before ADWM even though Mark hadn't get recorded that.
That was the strange thing about the UpsideDown, this happened out of order. They were outside of time. Time passed faster in the UpsideDown then it did in the human world.
One month in the human world was 10 years in the UpsideDown. Google had two clocks. One for the human world and one for the UpsideDown. That way they wouldn't lose track of time which was very easy.
It disorienting at times. Like now. Mark had no idea what happened in ADWM because it hadn't happened for him but it had happened for Efic but he knew it wouldn't be too long before he was caught up on things.
"I would think so. ADWM hasn't happened for me yet but it has for Eric. Its one downside of being tossed around like a pinball in an arcade machine. I can either end up in the future or the past. This is the future. ADWM hasn't happened for me or Dark yet. We'll return to our correct time soon enough. Its somethign you get used to. It happens with alarming regularity," Mark answers grinning, Dark nodded.
Eric watched as the egos continued to pay through AHWM, only offering clues when he saw they were struggling. He did them they could "go back" to the previous video if they happen to did and go the other path. It was something he greatly enjoyed.
He knew Matthew was going to be pleased when Eric told him. There was a lot more he needed to tell Yancy and Illinois but that could wait until Dark and Mark were back and completely caught up on recent events.
He couldn't help but wonder if things were always going to be this crazy or if they were going to settle down a little. He didn't really knowand that what made it so interesting.

Names For Scrivener
I wanted more names for my scrivener so I looked up a long ass list of names and formatted it to be uploaded by scrivener for the random name generator.
I will say there are 1,000 boy and girl names in this list but they dont have an ethnicity or name meaning tagged on them. I wanted to just do a quick thing for names to import on scriveners name generator. I figured I might as well share it all. Its under the read more if you want the list ^^ I didnt want to make a giant ass post followers who didnt care would have to deal with.
