3 CUPS A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY
A cup of hot chocolate a day could keep the doctor away: Cocoa boosts blood circulation in legs and help keep over 60s on their feet. Over 60s drank a mug of flavor - rich cocoa three times a day for 6 months, they were able to walk significantly further in a walking test at the end. Researchers think the cocoa improved blood flow to participants calves. Cocoa is abundant in a compound called epicatechin also found in dark chocolate, researchers think its epicatechin that may improve blood flow to participants calves, allowing them to go the extra distance. The study was done on people with the common peripheral artery disease or ‘PAD’ which is a narrowing of the arteries. A fifth of people over 60 in the UK have some degree of PAD, causing pain, tigtness and cramping in leg muscles while walking. Commenting on the findings, study auther professor Mary McDermott, at Northwestern University in Chicago, US,said: Few therapies are available for improving walking performance in people with PAD, who would have thought that drinking three cups of hot chocolate a day could keep us over 60s on our feet longer by boosting blood circulation in our legs, study shows, Happy Days.

What is peripheral arterial disease, peripheral arterial disease ( PAD ) is a condition in which the arteries in the legs become narrowed and resrict blood flow. The condition is usually caused by a build up of fatty deposits such as cholesterol on the inner lining of the blood vessels. Acquired from the diet, these fats stick to the wall of the artery and shrink the space through which blood can travel, increasing blood pressure, reducing oxygen flow and making it more likely someone will develop gangrene or have a heart attack or stroke. Around 200 million people worldwide have PAD and its most common in old people, with one in five over 6os in the UK having it. Symptoms are slow to develop and some people don’t notice them, but the main one is feeling an aching pain in the legs which may go away when resting. Leg pain is not necessarily a normal sign or ageing and people should see a doctor if theirs keeps coming back.
Others might include:
Numbness or weakness in the leg,
Hair loss on the legs and feet,
Brittle, slow growing toe-nail,
Ulcers (open sores) on your feet and legs, which don’t heal,
Changing skin colour on your legs, such as turning pale or blue,
Shiny skin,
Erectile dysfunction.
PAD is more likely in patients who smoke or have diabetes, high blood oressure or high colesterol.
The condition is treated with medications like statins and through, lifestyle changes such as weight loss, quitting smoking, excercising more and eating healthily.

Music a stroke aid
Music therapy helps to rehabilitate stroke patients a study found. Tunes lifted mood and concentration for patients. Playing the keyboards, drums and hand held percussion instruments, improved finger dexterity. The exercises seemed less clinical because the patients played music and got instant feedback through sound. In the study 139 patients out of 177 at Addenbrooke’s hospital cambridge found music “ helpful or very helpful.” I have seen this work for myself, through my dear friend Brian Hartly, for those of you who would not have known brian, he was Ann Hartlys ( Matron ) husband and back when Ann was working, on a weds myself and Mick Goucher used to go round and sit with brian for a few hours before Ann came home from work. We would get him laughing and he had one word he could say very clearly and it began with F but a part from just able to say that word quite a lot, we would get him to sing. He was able to remember songs from years before his stroke and also sing every word bloody amazing in my book and the time we spent with him for a few years was very special and something I will never forget, it does work, also Kathy Ritchies dad Rex was exactly the same the F word as well as being able to remember words to songs and sing them, I remember rex from dorothey lucy days he would be sitting in his wheelchair and when we would enter the room he would put his thumb up I would say hi how are you, and rex would smile and say F/ ell to say he’s alright, I think both those two gentlemen were amazing and very fond memorys.

Nerve cell transplant could this restore victims mobility.
Stroke patients could have their mobility and touch restored by transplanted nerve cells, a study suggests. Scientists recreated connections in the damaged brains of rats using human stem cells. Their research showed the new cells could repair stroke damage within six months of being placed in the brain. The transplants were inserted into the rat’s cerebral cortex – the part of the brain most commonly damaged after stroke. Neurologists of swedens lund university, said they used tracked activity in the transplanted cells to show they connected correctly. They added: we’ve been able to see fibres from the transplanted cells have grown to the other side of the brain – the side where we didn’t transplant any cells – and created connections. “ The study kindles hope that in the future it could be posible to replace dead nerve cells with new healthy nerve cells also in stroke patients. “No previous study has shown this.” But the researchers warned that there is more work to do before the precedure can be considered safe to try in human patients.
Strokes are life – threatening and accur when there is either a blockage in – or the bursting of – a blood vessel which cuts off blood to parts of the brain. Patients are often left with loss of mobility or touch.

Well it is unfortunate that this pandemic has fractured the way we live our normal lives, and rather than individuals it has had affected all our lives globally. For us as a group, we are missing our fortnightly meetings and to come together to socialise. Some of us have taken the initiative and kept in touch with those you are more familiar with, by phone,email,text, and other social media such as facebook, so as to keep some concerns going over other members welfare. After the government announced there would be an extension to the current lockdown of a further 3 weeks to endure, we will have to keep in touch in the same manner as we have been. We will still produce our monthly newsletter and as soon as is possible we can inform you of any updates on our return to some normality.

In the last few weeks julie became unwell and was hospitalised for a short while with shortness of breath and a few other issues but was soon sent back home,and she is recovering gradually,we wish her well.
Unfortunately for marion there was some sad news, her mother passed away,
not quiet making it to the 100 yrs, may we please all send our condolences from M.S.G.
I did ring bob sawyer and he was delighted to hear from someone, I had no doubt that his daughter emma was maintaining his well being, and that certainly was the case, as he told me he had more food than he could shake a stick at.Emma also text with a kind offer of help to any member that was struggling and we thank her kindly for that.
I also rang mel but got no answer, so I text his daughter, and apparently he had a short stay in hospital with a DVT in his leg and signs of clotts in his lungs that they are treating with medication and he is doing well. He is actively walking as he likes to do and that is good for him. He also needs to have hearing aids that have been delayed due to the virus, but he hears fairly well on the phone due to the pitch that he still has.
BOURNEMOUTH
The latest news on our what was to be up and coming spring break is, I have been on shearings website and wilst they tell you not to ring, there is an option there for you to reschedule the holiday to another time. Now I have spoken to a few of our group members that were going and some of them are having other holidays later this year ( hopefully ) so the prospect of getting us all together later this year to bournemouth seemed futile, so I have suggested rescheduling to 2021. I have filled in a reschedule proposal and sumitted it to shearings for friday May 14th to Mon 17th 2021. I have yet to hear back, so will inform all concerned when it is all confirmed, shearings are still holding our deposits of £60 p.p. and I am holding the balance in a seperate bournemouth account, for those that have paid in full.
The brookline coach for £1350 has also been paid but they have confirmed its OK to reschedule.

Due to the current lockdown we have missed out on a few events that would have raised some money for our group i.e. W. peckham quiz, Stroke quiz night, a possible lunch club donation, as well as subs etc, I reckon would have come close to £1600, so we need a concerted effort to come up with some fundraising ideas.

We drove fourteen and a half hours today so we could be at my Grandma’s funeral tomorrow. I’m so glad to not be in the car anymore.
Also, it’s weird how many billboards Chicago has for fireworks, strip clubs, and clinics that treat erectile dysfunction.

ED Medicine - Can This Be Used To Treat Male Sexual Dysfunction?
ED Medicine is a relatively new term, coined by the American College of Nurse Practitioner (ACNP). It is becoming more widely accepted, due to the fact that many individuals suffer from symptoms similar to those seen in years past. This is especially true for young adults entering their senior year. The term, "ED Medicine" is used to distinguish the different treatment options for patients suffering from short- and long-term pain and discomfort related to diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and skeletal disorders. The therapy branch of medicine is also growing in popularity. With a focus on total patient care and prevention, along with symptom management, the field is rapidly expanding.
ED medicine is broken down into three separate categories: orthopedics, cardiothoracic/vascular, and neuroanatomy and neurology. Orthopedics deals specifically with conditions related to the joints, bones, and ligaments. Cardiothoracic/vascular conditions, on the other hand, refer to any heart disease or abnormal heart rhythm. Neuroanatomy and neurology are commonly lumped together, due to the large number of neurological conditions related to the brain, rather than the spine.
One of the primary goals of ED medicine is to offer patients a variety of treatment options in an effort to find the most effective treatment plan. ED's use several diagnostic tools such as X-rays, CAT scans, and MRI's to determine dysfunction. Once dysfunction is determined, treatments are offered based on the underlying cause of the disorder. Along with offering treatment plans, many health insurance plans to participate in a program called Compund Health Care Insurance, or CCHIP, which covers the cost of certain therapeutic procedures and alternative medicines. ED's can even help families who are struggling to pay for health insurance to obtain coverage for these types of therapies.
One form of therapy found to be successful in treating erectile dysfunction, is known as vasodilatation. Vasodilatation is the gradual dilating of vascular spaces to improve blood flow to the penis, and it has been effective in increasing penis length and girth. Other therapies that can be used to treat erectile dysfunction include electrical stimulation, cold laser therapy, and traction devices. In some cases, pharmaceutical interventions may also be necessary to treat vasodilation.
Many professionals in the medical field would debate the effectiveness of this form of therapy, citing various side effects, such as minor bruising and temporary numbness. However, proponents of this form of treatment assert that the results seen are permanent, with no recurrence or rebound effects. Because of its holistic approach, ED modern medicine offers patients a more comprehensive approach to wellness. This includes a stress-reduction exercise program, dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications. Though these therapies cannot guarantee success, they do provide patients with a more comprehensive and restorative approach to health.
While there is much debate surrounding the merits of both conventional and alternative medical therapies, one thing that is clear is that people are gravitating towards the healing arts. Because of this, a medicine has experienced a significant amount of growth over the last decade or so. One of the most recent developments in the field was developed by New York neurologist Lisaombs. Lisaombs developed a program called Applied Kinesiology, which combines traditional Chinese medicine, Western medicine, and energy-based practices. Her efforts have created a new framework for care that incorporates the best elements of each discipline.
This type of approach has become increasingly popular in the United States, with clinics in Chicago and San Francisco offering a variety of services to men of all ages. Some of the benefits of this type of program include the use of gentle bodywork techniques and herbal medicines. It is also non-invasive, meaning that many men are able to enjoy the benefits of this type of therapy without experiencing the side effects common to modern medicine. These side effects include nausea, dizziness, headaches, and tingling and numbness.
Another natural approach to treating dysfunction is the use of acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, and even yoga. These treatments combine traditional Chinese medicine with a variety of other techniques to help treat dysfunction in the body. Because of their holistic approach, they are frequently used as part of an alternative medical therapy for sexual dysfunctions. In addition to the above medical therapies, many men find that homeopathic supplements, diet, and lifestyle changes make an enormous difference in the overall quality of their lives.

Male Menopause Is a Thing. What to Do About It
Male menopause is a real thing, and the medical term for it is andropause. According to the Mayo Clinic, the term “Male Menopause” has been used to describe decreasing testosterone levels related to aging. See this article from Mark back in 2018.
One of the symptoms of male menopause can be erectile dysfunction (ED). Although for younger men, you can have ED without male menopause. ED can destroy a man’s confidence not just in the bedroom but in the larger picture of his life by causing depression, stress, moodiness and anger all things that peak performers do not want to associate with. But for men aged 35-64 these things can sneak up on us, fast.
We are all so busy “performing.” Being a Dad, a good husband, business owner, a hard worker, friend, trying to get your workouts squeezed into an already hectic week. In many cases, this usually leads to a pattern of not not getting enough sleep because of late night emails for work after having put the kids to bed, up early the next day to get right back at your hard charging life, with too little exercise and not enough Primal Nutrition. Which leaves you with high stress. Stress leads to high cortisol (more about cortisol below).
Maybe you had a little too much wine at dinner … it happens. Your wife or lover wants to “play” and so do you, but no response. Once, certainly is nothing to worry about but the definition of ED is “is the recurrent or persistent inability to attain and/or maintain an erection in order for satisfactory sexual performance.” So, what to do?

Possible Causes of Erectile Dysfunction
In order to eliminate the frustration of ED we must first understand what may be causing it.
Too Little Sleep
Research from Mathew Walker’s book “Why We Sleep” point to the necessity of 7 plus hours of sleep per night. Of all the healthy things we can do to at the very least preserve our hormones, sleep is number one! According to Walker in his book, “If you have hopes of reproductive success, fitness or prowess, you would do well to get a full night’s sleep every night.” In fact as far as Testosterone is concerned, Walker cites a study done at the University of Chicago where a group of lean healthy young males in their mid 20’s were limited to 5 hours of sleep for one week. After the sleep deprivation for a week, “sample hormone levels circulating in the blood of the participants showed a marked drop in testosterone.The size of the hormone blunting effect was so large that it effectively ages a man by ten to fifteen years in terms of testosterone virility.” WOW is all I can say!
Too Much Stress
It’s a vicious cycle. Lack of adequate sleep, stress from family and work, financial stress, all of this leads to worry. Worry leads to high cortisol levels. Cortisol is also known as “the stress hormone” and chronically high levels can lead to irritability, moodiness and depression. The results of all that stress is hormones out of whack, especially testosterone, thyroid hormones and adrenal hormones. In other words, cortisol is part of the “fight or flight” mechanism that is built into all of us. When it is ON all the time, that will disrupt our hormonal levels which may lead to ED.
Inflammation
We need our inflammation response. When you slice your finger on a kitchen knife and you see a red ring around the cut, that’s acute inflammation.
Systemic chronic inflammation is the kind that causes problems. Caused by, you guessed it! Vegetable oils cooked under high heat, refined carbs, stress and not enough sleep. Chronic inflammation will not only hurt your sex life but long term, is a leading cause of dementia. These killer culprits lead to insulin sensitivity and inflammation and thus fat gain and yup, hormone distress again.
Not Enough Exercise
According to a report out of Harvard Medical School, “There is no specific exercise program for men looking to reduce the risk of ED. But a well-rounded exercise program that includes just half an hour of physical activity on all or most days of the week delivers solid health benefits.”1
Although the above statement is true, call this less science more anecdotal but it’s my observation that men need to lift heavy objects every now and then. Lean muscle mass is healthy, fat mass is not. Obesity is a leading cause of low testosterone while pumping iron raises it. You don’t have to be a bodybuilder or gym junkie but you do need to lift some weights, carry some heavy objects, climb a rope, do some body weight push-ups, pull ups, sit ups or simply join a CrossFit class for two times per week. Promising Approaches to Erectile Dysfunction
Ok, now that we know some of the leading causes of ED let’s dive into fixing it, the natural way without having to reach for the little blue pill.
Step 1: Improve your sleep.
Tips to improve your sleep:
Keep you bedroom between 65-68 degrees Fahrenheit
Eye mask to sleep
Room darkening shades
Cover all lights in room with electrical tape (you know those little red and green lights that your laptop or LED TV have)
Phone face down or on airplane mode or off
CBD with Melatonin
Ear plugs to block noise
Blue light blocking glasses if looking at a device before bed
Step 2: Lower Stress
Tips to to Lower Stress:
Meditation, prayer, breathing exercises, stillness or yoga are all wonderful ways to relieve stress. The best part is you don’t have to take up large amounts of more time with traveling to a yoga class for an hour and a half class and then drive back to the office home thus taking up a total of two hours of your precious time. I recommend this site and thus you can do yoga right from home or even the office. The best part, you get to choose how much time you have. Often, i will select the 10 minute session, that’s all you need to lower that blood pressure and get blood circulating again.
One other tip, I highly recommend the book “Stillness is the Key” by Ryan Holiday.
Step 3: Eat more grass fed beef, wild caught fish, organic vegetables
It’s not as hard as you think. You are already here at Mark’s Daily Apple so you have already taken the first step!! Next, if you haven’t already is to dive into the Primal Blueprint Laws. Eating primally provides your body with the building blocks it needs to create and balance hormones.
Step 4: Eliminate Inflammatory foods
Eating in a way that minimizes inflammation will help get roadblocks out of the way. Take massive action and throw out any and all inflammatory foods from your cupboard. Going Primal and eliminating industrial seed oils (like corn, soy and sunflower) will help a lot! Replace them with avocado and olive oil.
Guard your health because well, your bedroom time and your life may depend on it. Eat more whole foods, and learn, study and live Primal. Have a sweet tooth? No problem, you can still have dessert! Just choose healthy ingredients. For example, here is my go-to almost daily after dinner dessert:
One cup organic berries
One Primal Dark Chocolate Almond Collagen Fuel Bar cut up
Organic Cinnamon, ginger, or whatever spices you like to sprinkle on
Organic vanilla unsweetened almond milk
An occasional teaspoon of organic honey
Step 5: Lower Inflammation
How to support a healthy inflammation response
Cold shower of ice plunge. Doesn’t sound like fun? Well, start out with just 10 seconds at the end of your shower and work your way up from there.
Infrared sauna
Daily moderate exercise
Research supplements such as Curcumin and CBD
Step 6: Get Moving!
Although I advocate for pumping iron, at the end of the day just move! Take up whatever form of exercise you like whether it be swimming, biking, hiking or tennis but get moving, get that blood circulation in high gear and oh, get out in the sun a little! According to a report out of Harvard Medical School, “There is no specific exercise program for men looking to reduce the risk of ED. But a well-rounded exercise program that includes just half an hour of physical activity on all or most days of the week delivers solid health benefits.”1
Although the above statement is true, call this less science more anecdotal but it’s my observation that men need to lift heavy objects every now and then. Lean muscle mass is healthy, fat mass is not. Obesity is a leading cause of low testosterone while pumping iron raises it. You don’t have to be a bodybuilder or gym junkie but you do need to lift some weights, carry some heavy objects, climb a rope, do some body weight push-ups, pull ups, sit ups or simply join a CrossFit class for two times per week. Promising Approaches to Erectile Dysfunction
Ok, now that we know some of the leading causes of ED let’s dive into fixing it, the natural way without having to reach for the little blue pill.
Step 1: Improve your sleep.
Tips to improve your sleep:
Keep you bedroom between 65-68 degrees Fahrenheit

Cover all lights in room with electrical tape (you know those little red and green lights that your laptop or LED TV have)

Tips to to Lower Stress:
Meditation, prayer, breathing exercises, stillness or yoga are all wonderful ways to relieve stress. The best part is you don’t have to take up large amounts of more time with traveling to a yoga class for an hour and a half class and then drive back to the office home thus taking up a total of two hours of your precious time. I recommend this site and thus you can do yoga right from home or even the office. The best part, you get to choose how much time you have. Often, i will select the 10 minute session, that’s all you need to lower that blood pressure and get blood circulating again.
One other tip, I highly recommend the book “Stillness is the Key” by Ryan Holiday.
Step 3: Eat more grass fed beef, wild caught fish, organic vegetables
It’s not as hard as you think. You are already here at Mark’s Daily Apple so you have already taken the first step!! Next, if you haven’t already is to dive into the Primal Blueprint Laws. Eating primally provides your body with the building blocks it needs to create and balance hormones.
Step 4: Eliminate Inflammatory foods
Eating in a way that minimizes inflammation will help get roadblocks out of the way. Take massive action and throw out any and all inflammatory foods from your cupboard. Going Primal and eliminating industrial seed oils (like corn, soy and sunflower) will help a lot! Replace them with avocado and olive oil.
Guard your health because well, your bedroom time and your life may depend on it. Eat more whole foods, and learn, study and live Primal. Have a sweet tooth? No problem, you can still have dessert! Just choose healthy ingredients. For example, here is my go-to almost daily after dinner dessert:
One cup organic berries
One Primal Dark Chocolate Almond Collagen Fuel Bar cut up
Organic Cinnamon, ginger, or whatever spices you like to sprinkle on
Organic vanilla unsweetened almond milk

Take up whatever form of exercise you like whether it be swimming, biking, hiking or tennis but get moving, get that blood circulation in high gear and oh, get out in the sun a little! Urologist Cletus Roy Georges, MD Provides Professional Insight Into Erectile Dysfunction
Urology specialist Cletus Roy Georges, MD offers information and advice surrounding the condition known as erectile dysfunction.
Most commonly a sign of an underlying physical or psychological condition, erectile dysfunction can cause stress, low self-confidence, and put a strain on relationships. A urology specialist with many years of experience in the field, Cletus Roy Georges, MD offers a closer look at erectile dysfunction, its symptoms, available treatments, and more.
“The main symptom of erectile dysfunction involves a man’s inability to get or maintain an erection,” explains Dr. Georges.

Further to its main symptom of a man’s inability to get or maintain an erection, other symptoms of erectile dysfunction may include more general sexual dysfunction, reduced sex drive, soft erections, and anxiety, according to Dr. Georges. “If a patient suspects or finds that he is struggling with erectile dysfunction, he should approach either his primary care provider or a urologist such as myself,” he goes on to explain.
Patients may be referred to a clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist, or be offered medications including Tadalafil, Vardenafil, Avanafil, and Sildenafil, as well as other so-called vasodilators, plus assistive devices, such as pumps.
“Hormonal options may also be explored,” Dr. Georges explains, “and self-care advice offered, such as increasing physical exercise or quitting smoking, where relevant, in an effort to combat the condition.”
“For further information or advice,” he adds, wrapping up, “anyone suspecting that they may be suffering from erectile dysfunction should consult either a urologist or their primary care provider at their earliest convenience for help in dealing with or managing the condition.”
Cletus Roy Georges, MD attended Weill Cornell University Medical College in New York City, graduating in 1991 and completing his residency in urology at Chicago’s Northwestern University McGaw Medical Center in 1997. Shortly after that, urology specialist Dr. Georges began his practice in Sebring, Florida, before relocating to Orlando where he remains settled today.
