Spock mourning Kirk in TOS

Yesterday @queenofgol posted, You know what? I’ve never read a TOS version of Jim dying like Spock did in The Wrath of Khan, and Spock’s subsequent reaction. Not AOS, not Into Darkness- just a TOS version of Jim’s death…….. interesting……

To which I replied, It happens all the time in TOS, my dude.

And she requested some examples. Just off the top of my head… In 1x25 “The Devil in the Dark,” Spock briefly believes that Kirk has been killed or seriously injured by falling rocks.

KIRK: Yes, Mister Spock, I'm all right. We seem to have had a cave-in. SPOCK: I could phaser you out.  KIRK: No. No, no, you'd better not. Any disturbance might bring down the rest of the wall. Besides, it isn't necessary. The chart said the tunnels meet further on. SPOCK: Very well, but I find it extremely disquieting that your roof chose that particular moment to collapse. Please proceed with extreme caution. I shall quicken my pace.

2x01 “Amok Time.” Spock realizes that he has strangled Kirk to death.

T'PAU: Live long and prosper, Spock. SPOCK: I shall do neither. I have killed my captain and my friend. Energize. Later, in sickbay... SPOCK: Doctor, I shall be resigning my commission immediately, of course. MCCOY: Spock, I SPOCK: So I would appreciate your making the final arrangements. MCCOY: Spock, I SPOCK: Doctor, please, let me finish. There can be no excuse for the crime of which I'm guilty. I intend to offer no defence. Furthermore, I shall order Mister Scott to take immediate command of this vessel. KIRK: Don't you think you better check with me first? SPOCK: Captain! Jim!

3x09 “The Tholian Web.” Spock realizes Kirk must be dead.

Spock and McCoy watch a tape meant to be viewed by them in the event of Kirk’s demise. When the tape is complete, Spock slowly removes the data chip and carefully places it inside its sleeve where it belongs and pauses, grief-stricken. MCCOY: Spock, I, er, I'm sorry. It does hurt, doesn't it? SPOCK: What would you have me say, Doctor?

In 3x16 “The Mark of Gideon,” Kirk should have beamed down at certain coordinates, but never arrived. Spock’s request to beam down and conduct a search for the captain is refused by the ambassador. Spock is frustrated. SPOCK: Institute a sensor scan three hundred and sixty degrees, one degree at a time. MCCOY: You mean you're going to scan space for him? SULU: But, sir, that could take years. SPOCK: Then the sooner you begin, the better.
