Potential Devastation from Hurricane Milton
Hurricane Milton’s impact on Florida could be catastrophic. Forecasts show a Category 4 storm, and officials urge everyone to prepare for the worst. The potential damage from this hurricane could include:
Winds up to 150 mph – These extreme wind speeds can tear roofs off homes and businesses, uproot trees, and snap power lines. Flying debris could cause significant property damage and put lives at risk.
Torrential rainfall and flooding – Milton is expected to dump up to 20 inches of rain in certain areas, leading to flash flooding in low-lying regions. Coastal areas face the added threat of storm surge, which could inundate homes and infrastructure.

Hurricane Season Risks and Preparedness
Florida’s hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Hurricane Milton is hitting just as the state braces for more potential storms. The danger doesn’t end when the hurricane passes. After a storm like Milton, communities are left vulnerable to future weather events. The risk of another hurricane striking Florida before Milton’s recovery remains high.
Weakening Infrastructure – After Milton, homes and businesses will be more susceptible to damage from weaker tropical storms or hurricanes. Unrepaired roofs and weakened structures could collapse or fail under minimal pressure.
Flooding Risks – Milton’s heavy rainfall and storm surge will saturate the ground and fill waterways. This will leave communities vulnerable to even small rain events, with the potential for additional flooding.
Power Restoration Delays – With Milton causing widespread outages, the power grid may remain unstable for weeks, making it difficult for residents to recover fully before the next storm hits.
Preparing for Future Storms – Residents must begin making plans now for the rest of hurricane season. Stock up on supplies, make sure your property is secure, and stay informed about future weather developments.
Additional Tips for Hurricane Preparedness
To ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones, follow these guidelines when preparing for a Hurricane:
Evacuate if Ordered – Listen to local officials and immediately evacuate if you are in an evacuation zone. Delaying could put your life at risk.
youtube
Secure Your Property – Install hurricane shutters, trim trees, and secure outdoor items. Consider having your roof inspected by New Image Roofing before the storm hits.
Prepare a Disaster Kit – Include essentials like water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.
Stay Informed – Official sources like FEMA, FDEM, and the National Weather Service offer updates and information.

Biden’s ironically named Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) was supposed to create millions of green jobs and launch the “sustainable power” industry.
Subsidies flowed to support electric vehicles, wind farms, and solar energy. We have been covering the slowdown in the EV market, and residents of the East Coast are questioning all the promises made by the wind energy companies after the Vineyard Wind blade failure.
Now, it’s time to turn our attention to solar power. SunPower, the company that provides solar panels to many Californian homes in the sunny Coachella Valley area, filed for bankruptcy this week.
It is the latest development in a saga that has seen the company facing numerous serious and seemingly escalating challenges over the past several months, including allegations about executives’ misconduct related to the company’s financial statements and a recent decision that SunPower would no longer offer new solar leases. Days after the latter announcement, Coachella Valley-based Renova Energy, which markets and installs SunPower systems, said it was ending its partnership with SunPower and temporarily pausing operations after not receiving required payments from SunPower. SunPower’s executive chairman wrote in a letter posted on the company’s website on Monday that the company had reached an agreement to sell certain divisions of its business and suggested it was looking for one or more buyers to take on the rest, including the company’s responsibilities to maintain solar systems it has previously sold or leased.
It is important to note that SunPower was the industry’s “darling” to understand the magnitude of this development.
Founded in 1985 by a Stanford professor, SunPower was, for the past two decades, a darling of the solar industry. The company helped build America’s biggest solar plant, called Solar Star and located near Rosamond, California, and has installed solar panels on more than 100,000 homes. The company’s stock price has fluctuated dramatically, peaking during the solar stock frenzy of late 2007. As recently as January 2021, SunPower’s valuation momentarily reached $10 billion, buoyed by the expansion of its residential solar panels program. But since then, the company’s value has cratered — and this year, its situation became particularly dire.
It is also important to note that earlier this month, the bankruptcy of a solar-powered company in South Florida created an array of problems on the South Coast of California. Subcontractors are scrambling to find ways to guarantee payment for work on homes with equipment from the firm.
Meanwhile, homeowners are regretting their misplaced trust in eco-activists and city officials.
The business — Electriq Power Inc. — was putting solar panels and batteries on Santa Barbara rooftops at no expense to homeowners and with the blessings of the cities of Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Carpinteria. But then Electriq filed Chapter 7 on May 3, freezing all its operations. This prompted one of its subcontractors, Axiom 360 of Grover Beach, to place mechanics liens on homes for which it had yet to be paid. This preserves Axiom’s options for full payment of its installation work and is not unusual among contractors. But for homeowners who didn’t expect any financial outlay, it came as a shock, especially as the recording notice lists foreclosure in 90 days among the penalties. “You’re helping the environment. You’re not paying high rates to Southern California Edison,” said homeowner Randy Freed, explaining why he signed on to Electriq’s PoweredUp Goleta program. He was pleased with the savings in the solar array and storage batteries, but then he received the mechanics lien in June. The possibility of foreclosure was unanticipated, Freed said, and he’d relied on the cities’ endorsements. “It’s a great program; we’ve checked them out,” he recalled the cities saying on a postcard he received.
Hot Air's Beege Welborne takes an in-depth look at the cascade of warnings that indicate SunPower and the residential solar market are in serious trouble. She also hits on a point that is true for all green energy schemes: Today’s technology cannot keep up with the promises being made about tomorrow.
The technology side still hasn’t ironed itself out and may never with as saturated as the market is. With interest rates as high as they are and home prices through the roof, no one wants to pay a fortune for something that’s not rock solid. …That “sustainable” growth is only possible once all the artificial supports are knocked away and the technology proves viable and worth the cost once and for all.
Of course, the solar industry isn’t helped by the fact that the cost savings for customers aren’t quite as lavish as originally promised.

FLASHBACK: Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird

Big Tail - One of a Kind Variant
Shortly after the first SR-71’s began flying operational missions over North Vietnam, the Air Force was looking into ways of expanding the capabilities of the aircraft. With the interchangeable noses, mission planners had to make a choice of flying either optical cameras or side-looking radar, depending upon the mission requirements and the weather over the target area. Unfortunately several missions were rendered useless when weather over the target area prevented the use of the optical camera systems installed. There was also the possibility that future ground defenses had the ability to reach the SR-71 from behind since it carried no aft facing countermeasures.
In 1974, the Air Force identified a requirement for aft facing ECM requirement on the SR-71. Several proposals examined by the Air Force included conformal packages, belly pods as well as an extended tail fairing. After researching all the possibilities, the extended tail appeared to be the most viable option based on lowest cost, added volume and least aerodynamic drag. The new “Big Tail” assembly is 13-feet, 9-inches long and weighs 1,273 lbs. with 49 cubic feet of space to carry 864 lbs. of payload. The primary payload consisted of aft facing ECM as well as the 24-inch Optical Bar Camera. The new assembly needed to articulate 8.5 degrees up and down to clear the runway during take-off and landing.
The tenth SR-71 built (61-7959) was selected to receive the new modification. This aircraft was already being used for flight test duties at Palmdale at the time so there would be no effect on the operational fleet. Between April and November 1975, ‘959 received the modification with the new tail fairing; necessary modifications included a 51-inch adapter unit for the new tail, air conditioning for cameras and other equipment as well as routing the fuel vent along the upper surface of the tail. In addition to the tail modification, chine bays were modified to accommodate the 24-inch Optical Bar Camera.
With the stress and vibration testing completed, ‘Big Tail’ was taken out for the first high-speed taxi test on November 20, 1975 by Lockheed test crew Darrell Greenamyer (pilot) and Steven Belgeau (Reconnaissance Systems Officer-RSO). Two weeks later, on December 3, the same crew took Big Tail up on its first flight. Lasting just over one hour, the crew performed basic flight checks as well as tail deflections and fuel dump tests. With each test flight with the same Lockheed crew, Big Tail flew to higher speeds and altitudes achieving Mach 3 at 75,000 ft during the 6th flight on January 28,1976. Prior to turning the aircraft over to Air Force test crews, Greenamyer performed 4 solo flights to prove the system could be run by just a single crewmember. The RSO’s seat occupied by a ballast dummy affectionately known as “Sierra Sam”.
Once Lockheed crews proved the system worked, the Air Force took over all flight testing. Tom Pugh and Bob Riedenauer became the pilots and RSO duties went to William Frazier and John Carnochan with the first Air Force flight taking place on May 5, 1976. Over the next 6 months these Air Force crews made 23 flights in ‘Big Tail’, testing various camera systems in the tail and chine bays, as well as new ECM systems such as the DEF I, DEF J and DEF A-2.
Although ‘Big Tail’ proved to be a viable system, the Air Force chose not to pursue the concept any further. After only 36 flights with the extended tail, ‘959 made its last flight on October 29, 1976, then simply placed in outdoor storage at Palmdale. Though it only had a total of 866 hours of flight time and a total of 304 flights to its credit, ‘959 became a source of spare parts for other flight test SR-71s until it was finally transferred to the Air Force Armament Museum at Eglin AFB, Florida in the fall of 1991.

Takes place during Episode 14, Season 1
The day had started off in the most unexpected of ways.
Evelyn had just buckled herself into her car when her phone had started to ring. The screen showed that it was Gideon. Frowning at the urgency in his tone, the red head made her way to the BAU Building as quickly as she could. Rushing through security she did not even pause to greet the members of her Team as she made her way towards Gideon's office. She knocked, before walking in.
"You called, Agent Gideon?" She inquired, stepping into the room once he nodded to confirm her statement.
————————–
Three hours later Evelyn Richardson was sitting in the driver seat of an FBI issued SUV, driving along the highway of Central Florida. The weather was hotter then she had thought it would be, but since this was related to work which required her to be interactive, she had opted for a more professional look, with a blue blouse, black pants and coat, with shoes she had borrowed from JJ. And for once, her hair was loose as it hung around her shoulders. The curls were as tame as she could get them on such short notice, but they would suffice.
But what she was going to be dealing with was certainly not her cup of tea. And she didn't even like tea! She turned her head as her destination came into view, her tongue passing over her lips, her features morphed to one of anxiousness and nervousness.
Florida State Penitentiary.
God! Why did Gideon have to send her ahead?
Because you need to set up before the whole Team arrived, a voice reasoned in her head.
Shaking her head lightly, Evelyn turned the car, driving into the parking lot of the area.
"This is the space we cleared out. You can set everything up here."
Evelyn followed after the Warden, who had introduced himself as Charles Diehl. Looking around the space, the red head was satisfied, knowing how Penelope preferred a space where everything could be set up neatly. She had been afraid they would be getting a much smaller area.
"Is that everything?" The Warden asked, turning to look at her. Evelyn nodded.
"Yes, thank you sir." She said, motioning for the men behind her to bring in the equipment she had brought with her. The Warden nodded.
"Right. I will be in my office if you need anything." He said, before exiting the room, just as the last man placed the last box of equipment and walked out. Evelyn heaved a sigh as she shrugged off her blazer.
"Right." She muttered, pushing her glasses further up her nose, before rolling her sleeves up to her elbows.
"Lets get to it!"
————————–
Almost an hour later, Evelyn was pushing in the last of the wires in place when her phone rang.
"Hey Penelope." She greeted after checking the ID.
"Hey Sweetums! Is everything set?" The voice on the other end asked cheerfully. Evelyn nodded, even though no one could see her, as she flipped on the main switch, smiling in satisfaction as the machines were brought to life.
"And fully operational."
"Good! We'll be there in half an hour. Garcia out!"
Snapping the phone shut Evelyn looked down at her hands, frowning at the sight of them covered in dust and dirt. Grabbing her jacket she quickly made her way to the bathroom to clean up.
Looking over at the red head sitting next to him, eyes narrowed in concentration as she scanned the screen Gideon cleared his throat to get her attention.
"Reid? Evelyn? The three of us will be taking over to talk with Sarah Jean." He called, making the red head look up, her mouth open in surprise as she stared at her Superior.
"Sir?" She asked, the disbelief evident in her voice and expression. Gideon gave her a look.
"You did not attain a minor in non-verbal communication for nothing Agent Richardson." He stated, his voice stern as he looked at her from the top of his glasses. Evelyn bit down on her lip, before giving a small nod. It was all the reassurance he needed as he turned and walked out. Evelyn raised her eyes to glance at Reid who was frowning at Gideon's retreating back. He caught her look of bewilderment, lifting his shoulder in a shrug before walking after him.
Feeling a hand on her shoulder Evelyn looked up to see Hotch give her a reassuring nod. Heaving a sigh Evelyn followed after the two men.
Reid glanced back. Finding that Evelyn was still a few paces behind them he leaned forward to speak to Gideon, a whisper.
"Why did you ask Evelyn, to come? She's a technician, not an Analyst like us." Gideon did not break stride or turned to look at the younger agent as he answered.
"No. But there is something she will benefit from, from this particular case." He answered. Reid looked as if he were about to ask another question but kept quite as Evelyn caught up with them. She was clenching her hands, he noticed. A sure sign that she was nervous, since she could not tug at her hair she clenched her fists so that she might have something to do. Evelyn glanced up at Reid, a small smile on her lips. Reid only nodded, understanding the message she was trying to convey.
Evelyn stood in front of the cell just behind Gideon and in front of Reid. Her eyes roamed over the walls, looking at the paintings that adorned them. They were quite beautiful, she admitted to herself. Though how a killer, someone who destroyed, was capable of creating something so beautiful was beyond her.
"Accomplished work." Gideon complimented. The blonde woman stood quite, her back to them, before she spoke.
"I've had plenty of time." She stood there for a few seconds, before she turned around. As Sarah Jean turned to look at her visitors, Evelyn schooled her features into an emotionless mask. If she had to do what her superior asked her to then she would do it to the best of her ability. Her lips seemed to be pulled into a permanent smile. To Evelyn the smile looked as if it held secrets. Secrets so deep and mysterious that no one would be able to figure them out.
"What is it you want to know?" She asked. Gideon stood there quietly, pursing his lips before answering.
"I think its time that the mothers of those girls learned why their children had to die." He stated simply. "Don't you?" Evelyn refrained from biting down on her lip, as she sighed inwardly.
Here goes!
"Sarah Jean?" She called out, her voice soft as she stepped out from behind Gideon. The blonde woman's eyes turned to her.
"My! Aren't you a charming young girl." She said her voice soft and pleasant as she looked at her, the smile ever present. Evelyn took the compliment with a small smile of her own. As she stepped fully in to the small living space something in the back of her mind made her sure of the fact that this case was not like any she had ever come across.
————————–
Evelyn was working as fast as she could. Penelope was right at her side and both mentor and protégé had their eyes glued to the screen as they searched for Riley.
"We need to get into her cell." Gideon finally said, already walking away before he stopped and turned to Evelyn.
"Agent Richardson. I want you to take a little walk with Sarah Jean. Talk to her. She seems to like you. Try to get a reading at her body language." Evelyn blinked in surprise before quickly standing up from her place beside Penelope, pulling off her headset as she did.
"Of course sir."
————————–
It was cold outside. And since she had taken off her blazer when she had sat down on the computers Evelyn was left wearing a silk blouse. She crossed her arms over her chest as she shivered slightly, prompting Sarah Jean to glance at the red head.
"Are you cold?" Evelyn shook her head.
"No. No. I'm fine. Just a little windy is all." She reassured the older woman. Sarah Jean smiled before turning her gaze to the sky once more. Evelyn turned to look at the Warden and gave him a small nod. He nodded back before moving to stand a little way away from the two women. Evelyn stepped a little closer to Sarah, her hands going into her pockets where she fingered something before pulling it out. The sound of paper unwrapping could be heard in the quite area and Sarah turned to Evelyn in slight confusion as the red head unwrapped a bar of chocolate and after breaking it in two pieces held one out to Sarah.
"I always carry one around in case I don't have time to eat." Evelyn explained with a small smile, waiting for Sarah to accept her offering. Sarah smiled as she took the piece.
"You should take better care of yourself Agent Richardson." She advised the red head before taking a bite of the chocolate and smiling at the taste. The sweet was gone in a matter of seconds and both women turned their attention to the sky.
"I used to tell Riley that the man in the moon would look down on both of us. No matter where we were." Evelyn's gaze shifted from the moon to the blonde. Sarah continued to smile up at the full moon.
"Sarah?" The word was spoken softly, almost pleadingly, which prompted the woman in question to turn to Evelyn with that soft every present smile on her face.
"If there is anything you can tell us that can save you-"
"Thank you for the kindness you have shown me Agent Richardson." Evelyn felt despair settle into her heart as Sarah cut her off.
"I feel as if I have gained a friend in you." Sarah continued with a sad look in her eyes before she walked past the agent and towards the Warden, her time outside up.
————————–
Anger, frustration and despair. Three emotions that were brimming up inside her as she quickly walked into the room where the BAU had been working from.
"Please tell me you found something!" She said as soon as she walked in. Catching sight of Gideon's expression she stopped short.
"We found something." Reid informed her, holding a newspaper clipping which he held out to his team member. Taking the clipping Evelyn stared at the smiling face of a teenager, a small shred of hope forming within her as she did.
"We believe this is-"
"Riley…" Her voice was barely above a whisper as she continued to look at the photo.
————————–
Sarah Jean placed the painting aside, her heart heavy and fearful at not seeing the newspaper clipping of her son's photograph behind it. The man behind her continued to cut her hair, oblivious to the inner turmoil that the woman felt. Glancing up at one of the guards she shifted slightly as she spoke.
"Could I speak to Agent Richardson please?"
————————–
Evelyn walked down the corridor as fast as she could. Sarah had asked for her. That meant that she wanted to tell her something. Maybe something about Riley. Though when she reached the cell where Sarah was staying Evelyn stopped short.
Sarah's blonde hair was gone now. And she sat holding the painting of the boy running across the meadow, smiling down at it as she did. "Sarah?" The red head called out, walking into the small living space.
"Could you stay with me Evelyn? Till its my time?"
Evelyn wanted nothing more then to run back to her computers and try and locate Riley. To save the woman who was innocent. Who didn't deserve to die. But something made her walk further into the cell and sit down next to the older woman. She too looked at the painting.
"You love him very much." It wasn't a question. It was a statement. Sarah nodded, the smile ever present on her face as she caressed the boy in the painting with soft fingers.
"He is the best thing to have ever come out of my meeting Jacob." Silence lapsed between them after that. Evelyn only hoped her presence gave Sarah whatever comfort she may need. Reaching out she slowly took Sarah's hand in one of her own, gripping it tightly. Sarah glanced up at Evelyn in surprise before that look morphed to one of gratitude and happiness. And in that moment Evelyn knew that no matter what any of them did Sarah Jean was going to die. And she had accepted it.
————————–
As Sarah Jean walked down the corridor to her death Evelyn Richardson was right at her side. Holding her hand tightly as she did. The Warden had requested that she step aside yet Evelyn had refused. The red head had stood by as she watched Gideon hug Sarah Jean before telling Hotch to call off Morgan and Elle. That the boy they had found wasn't her son.
Defeat was evident in not only Gideon's eyes but Evelyn's as well, as the red head turned to embrace Sarah as well.
"I hope you find peace, Sarah." The young woman whispered. Sarah sighed deeply as she closed her eyes and let herself simply feel Evelyn's embrace.
"I am at peace."
Evelyn slowly stepped back, her eyes full of tears, which she was holding back to the best of her ability even as Sarah continued to cry soft, tears of relief.
"Goodbye."
Slowly Sarah turned to walk into the room where her sentence would be carried out but then she stopped and turned to look at Gideon.
"Would it be too much to ask if yours is the last face I see?" Gideon's eyes widened in surprise. Without waiting for a response Sarah walked into the room. A few seconds later Gideon walked into the room as well and only Evelyn and Hotch were left outside. Hotch turned his gaze to the youngest agent on his team to see her staring at the now closed door.
"She didn't want you to see her die." He informed her softly, taking in the red head's posture. Evelyn sighed deeply, her breath shuddering as she nodded.
"Because she considered me a friend. And if Sarah Jean can die for her son, there was no way she would've allowed the only person she called a friend to watch her die." The tears she held back were flowing freely now. Her superior reached out to gently place a hand on her shoulder, giving the grieving girl what little comfort he could give.
————————–
She felt numb.
All Evelyn could do was stare at the ceiling as she lay in bed. Her coat was thrown haphazardly over the nearest chair she had seen as she walked in, and badge looked like it had been flung across the room since it was on the floor right near the closed window. The red head's mind was racing. Racing with what had happened in the last few hours. But the one thing that was in the forefront of her mind. More then anything else.
Sarah Jane was innocent.
She had never assisted her husband in ant of the murders. And yet she chose to die. To protect her son.
The knock on the door shook her out of her thoughts and she quickly jumped up from the bed. Pulling the door open she was greeted with the sight of Reid who had his hand raised in a fist to knock on her door once more.
"What?" She asked. Reid didn't even blink at the blunt question. He cleared his throat, shoving his hands in his pockets before he spoke.
"Morgan and I are going down to get something to eat. I volunteered to get you. See if you wanted to come." He rocked back and forth on his feet as he talked. Evelyn gripped the door, her knuckles turning paler then usual, before she spoke.
"I'm not hungry." Her friend nodded in an understanding way.
"And could you tell everyone else that I want to be left alone?" It was a clear cut message. She didn't want to be disturbed. Pursing his lips, the young doctor gave another nod before moving to walk down the hall towards the elevator.
"Spence?" He stopped at the small voice, turning on his heel halfway to look at her. She was staring at the wall, yet he detected the slight quiver in her voice as she spoke.
"How could she give up her life like that?" Silence followed her words. Reid stood where he was, chewing his bottom lip lightly only letting go once Evelyn turned to look at him, the question in her gaze.
"She loved her son that much? That she gave up her life to protect him. From herself?" Disbelief colored her tone. Being in a profession where most emotions she came across led to people doing horrible acts, Evelyn couldn't fully grasp the concept of a person giving up their life for the love of another person. Reid gave a small shrug.
"Emotions can give people the courage they need to do the impossible. Dying is one of them." There was a silence following his words.
"She didn't have to die." She whispered prompting Reid to nod in agreement.
"No she didn't." He looked as if he were struggling with something before a look from Evelyn had him speaking what was on his mind.
"Do you want me to stay with you? In periods of grief being surrounded by the person who care for you is shown to help a person get over their grief or trauma." Evelyn pursed her lips before shaking her head.
"I'm used to dealing with my emotions on my own Reid. I'll be fine." There was a hint of force in her tone, as if she were pushing him away almost physically. Reid only stood there and frowned as the door slammed shut. Judging from the light thump that followed he knew Evelyn was just at the other side, leaning against the door. Letting her emotions consume her.
Feeling helpless and slightly frustrated the young genius slowly walked away, his mind racing, thinking for a way he could help his friend like she had helped him out with his nightmares.

Would Curtis get an above ground pool or dig one up himself?
If Curtis is gonna change his backyard space, he is going all the way.
Meaning he is getting everyone together and they are gonna pitch in.
Ella is excited, she wants to run the large equipment they have to rent to dig up the space. Sophia is already planning on how often she is coming over to Uncle Curtis's and Auntie Y/N to play... Kraken. You didn't think it was something like mermaids right? That kid loves her cryptids like her auntie does.
Honey is all concerned about the placement because you don't want any of the gardens disrupted. Those were Lillians gardens and you take great pride in how you brought them back to life. Curtis assures you that he wouldnt do anything that will damage those gardens. But you're so excited! You loved Jade's pool in Florida and it feels like such a luxery.
Grey is already doing the math in how much concrete they are gonna need to pour and then laying out the pool liner and such. Yona is helping him with the math, bringing up lots of great tips in how to get the most out of their pool space.
Edgar is debating with Ella about running the equipment, he is certified and might be the better choice. Picture Ella rolling her eyes at him with a smart remark.
Claude is already going online to find them the best deal and break out a shovel to start digging. This girl is ready to get a pool party started. Tanya offered to supervise while handing Timmy a shovel to help. Timmy is not as enthusiastic about that idea but can't wait to do some awesome cannonballs into the pool.
And Curtis, hell he is getting more excited about this, not only does he get to build something, he and his girl get to have a little oasis to share. Already is is planning on installing a hot tub too, but that's a surprise for you later. He already had those plans drawn up too.
Thank you for the ask Babes!

Phantom Children: Redux | IV. No Rest for the Weary
A DPxDC crossover // Read on [AO3} or [FFN.net]
← Previous Chapter // MASTERPOST // Next Chapter →
Present Day…
Batman made plans to visit Belle Reve Penitentiary before the week was over. The entire facility was made out of thick, gray, stone dotted by uniform windows. It stood above the waters of a murky swamp, the edges of the property enclosed by high wire fences.
There were about half a dozen security protocols that needed to be done to gain access to Belle Reve’s inner sanctum. Each layer and set of equipment installed and updated by various construction teams to insure that no single entity could compromise the Penitentiary’s—and thus Task Force X’s—security.
Batman, as he was wont to do, bypassed all of it.
He deposited himself in Amanda Waller’s office. It would have been a spacious room had it not been crowded with rows of filing cabinets. A healthy dose of paranoia made Waller careful to store any truly critical information in digital form, where it can be hacked by some malicious force or given access to by some particularly helpful person. The sorting system, from what Batman could see at first glance, forwent the standard A-Z categories for something else. Probably something that only Waller could understand.
A desk sat in the middle with a comfortable rolling chair behind it and a dual-monitor on top. Behind it was a wide window that overlooked the midnight Terrebonne Parish skyline.
He did not, however, have the time to appreciate the view as Amanda Waller finally stepped into her office.
She was a stout woman with a stern expression, dressed sensibly in a dark, mauve blazer, a white blouse, pearls, and a long, black skirt. A file-folder was tucked beneath one arm. The second she saw him, Waller paused, cocking her hip to one side and free hand tucked into her blazer pocket.
“Batman,” she said, nonplussed. “What brings you here?”
“Information…On a prisoner of yours.”
Waller took a seat behind her desk, setting her folder aside. “As far as I recall, Belle Reve isn’t currently housing any of your rogues. The last one was transferred over to Arkham a few months ago.”
He threw a printed article onto her desk. A small little piece from the Terrebonne Times, more a notice than actual news with what little information it held. The headline was emblazoned on the top:
DEATH AT BELLE REVE
Inmate Dies Under Mysterious Circumstances;Foul Play Suspected
Waller glanced at the article then looked back up at Batman, brow raised. “A little late to be investigating this, don’t you think? The event in question happened six months ago.”
“I need access to Frederick Isaak Showenhower’s cell.”
“Hm. I’m surprised you’re actually asking.”
Batman remained silent.
“Well.” Waller steepled her fingers together. “I suppose we could come to an arrangement.”
“An arrangement?” Batman snorts. “Sure. You give me access to the cell and I won’t tell your superiors that Showenhower—a regular human kept in a meta prison—didn’t die from some dispute between inmates, but from some outside force breaching Belle Reve’s ‘impenetrable’ security. You don’t hold any cards here, Waller.”
“Oh really? If I didn’t, I would have expected you to just waltz into the cell yourself without telling anyone.”
“I hold some respect for you, Waller. That’s the only reason why I’m asking.”
Waller made a pinched, sour face. With a huff, she got up from her desk and led Batman through the winding corridors of Belle Reve to Showenhower’s cell.
“What do you know about Freakshow, Batman?”
“Thirty years old, male, Caucasian, and possibly born with albinism. A bank and jewelry store robber who disguises his hits with a traveling circus show. He has connections with the occult and used it to commit his robberies. APISA apprehended him in St. Augustine, Florida, a little over a year ago.”
Waller laughed. “The GIW’s first and last hurrah.”
The Ghost Investigation Ward—or the Guys in White as it was jokingly referred to—was a fairly new and now defunct branch of the Agency of Paranormal Investigation and Spectral Affairs, focused on the research and apprehension of ectoplasmic entities known as ‘ghosts’. Their less than stellar track record made them the joke of not only APISA but the entirety of Task Force X, instilling within the ward’s few members a tight-knit camaraderie and an almost terrifying level of dedication towards their mission. They were more zealots than government agents. Coupled with their incompetence and their high collateral damage, the group was forced to disband.
“Occultism aside,” Batman said, “small time human thieves aren’t usually the kind of criminals Task Force X would be interested in.”
“You’d be right. APISA and the GIW’s interest lay not with Freakshow, specifically, but with his family. The Showenhowers’ research in the occult and supernatural go back centuries. They’re a veritable treasure trove of information, and as of three years ago, they’re also the only expert on ghosts left.”
He blinked. “Ghosts.”
“Ghosts.” Waller echoed. “Though not exactly the kind that you’re thinking of, but that is what these creatures have been calling themselves. As far as our researchers can tell, these ‘ghosts’ are inhabitants of a dimension tied very closely with our own.”
Suddenly, a spark. A memory. Information clicked into place.. “You learned of Freakshow in Amity Park.”
Waller neither confirmed or denied it.
It made sense, in a way. Though thought of as little more than a tourist trap, Amity Park had gained the reputation of being the most haunted city in America. Though no substantial proof ever made it outside of the city besides extremely blurry shots of light and grainy footage of streaks in the sky, the Justice League knew better than to dismiss the threats, if only because JL-Dark marked the city in the League’s main database with a heavy ‘ DO NOT INTERACT ’ warning for humans and metas alike. The exact situation in Amity Park was never explicitly laid out for the League other than that it was contained and handled and that the League should not, under any circumstances, interfere.
Though for good measure, Constantine saw it fit to bold, underline, italicize, and capitalize the DNI. Most heroes since then have taken to simply going around the city—even going so far as to avoid its air space.
“Well, here we are.”
Showenhower’s cell was located on the highest floor of the penitentiary, at the very end of the hallway and isolated from every other prisoner. Despite it being six months since the incident, all of the cells in this particular hallway were left unoccupied.
The inside of Showenhower’s cell, however, was far from empty. Frost covered the room from floor to ceiling, dropping the temperature by a few degrees. Large stalactites of ice hung down from the ceiling, patches of ice covered every corner and crept up the walls like vines.
“This is where he died,” Batman stated, breath coming out in white mists.
“Right over there.” Waller pointed at the single bed pushed towards the right side of the room. A frozen mattress on top of a rectangular dias that jutted out of the wall and had no space beneath it. “It was a strange thing. One moment Freakshow was sitting on the bed and staring at the wall. The next? He slammed his hand against the wall, froze the whole damn room over, and dropped dead.”
◆◆◆
Pause. Rewind. Play.
The door to the cell slid open and Freakshow walked in. He stood in the middle, surveyed the entire room, before his gaze stopped at the camera discreetly placed in the corner of the ceiling. He blinked, lowered his head, then went to sit down on his bed. Directly across from him was a mirror.
Ten minutes passed in relative silence. Freakshow just sits, tapping his foot. Tilted his head here and there. Scratched the back of his neck. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Then— He froze, shoulders stiffened. For a brief moment, a wide grin stretched across his face before it’s pushed back into a stony expression. Freakshow slammed his hand against the wall, ice burst from his palms, and he dropped dead.
Pause.
Rewind.
It had been days since Batman visited Belle Reve. Bruce made little progress in solving the case. It did not help, of course, that there were other things that demanded his attention: a JL founders meeting concerning the admission of new heroes; the rumored reappearance of some stolen tech from Task Force X circulating the black market; his presentation for an upcoming fundraiser for the Wayne Foundation; his regular duties as batman and as CEO of Wayne Enterprises…The list was endless.
Play.
Thank goodness for Tim. His son had a good head on his shoulders and amazing intuition. Though as much as Tim had been arguing with Damian as to who got to accompany him on certain excursions, Bruce could see that Tim was just itching to go off on his own. To spread his own wings.
Reluctant as Bruce was to let any of his Robins fly out from under him…at this point, he’d like to think he had enough experience to know that his children would grow up with or without his consent. Bruce had spent the last year easing up on Tim’s restrictions—much to Damian’s envy. More solo patrols, more casework, a greater degree of decision in his own missions, etcetera. Bruce even let Tim take the lead in the stolen tech case, only stating that he reports any and all findings to Batman and to not engage dangerous enemies alone if able.
Bruce tapped a sharp rhythm on the desk, willing his attention back to the task at hand.
Ice covered the room. Freakshow slumped down, dead. Pause.
Rewind.
He played the video from the beginning once more, fingers steepled as he watched the proceedings.
An ordinary man with no powers at all walks into a heavily fortified prison cell, sits down on his bed, shoots ice from his hands, and dies. No one entered the room with him, and the door remained locked up until security came barreling through the doors a few minutes after he died.
Freakshow sat down, foot tapping loudly—
Pause.
Freakshow’s character profile described him as someone who was very deliberate with his movements. A trait possibly learned from years as a showman. What few footage Bruce managed to scrounge up from Circus Gothica’s shows displayed a ringmaster with a mastery over his own body, each gesture practiced and perfected for maximum effect. What videos there were of Freakshow when he was not addressing the audience—or the dozens of recordings of his stay in Belle Reve— saw a man who stood with uncanny stillness. Hands clasped behind his back, head tilted to the side just so.
Certainly not a man prone to fidgeting and tapping his foot.
Rewind.
Play.
Freakshow sat down across from the mirror, back to the camera, foot tapping loudly. The sound of it reverberating loudly in his tiny cell. He tilted his head, hand coming up to scratch the back of his neck.
Bruce narrowed his eyes. How did he miss it before? He zoomed in on the mirror, enhancing as much of the image quality as possible. Freakshow was talking . The words were too inaudible for the camera to pick-up, and his mouth’s movement was too subtle, too quick to be read.
“He knew his murderer was in the room with him,” Bruce mumbled.
“Father?”
Bruce looked over his shoulder. “Ah, Damian.” He rotated his chair to face his son. “What can I do for you?”
“Pennyworth asked me to inform you that dinner would be ready soon.” Damian’s eyes flicked over to the video footage. “Any progress with the assassin?”
“Perhaps.” He beckoned Damian closer to the monitor, replaying the video for him and explaining his own thought process. “Here, pay special attention to the mirror. It’s subtle, but you can clearly see Freakshow speaking— presumably to someone else in the room. Notes on his file indicate that he’s not prone to talking to himself or mumbling his thoughts aloud. Coupled with the uncharacteristic fidgeting—an action that causes enough noise that it masks his mumbling—we can also presume that this conversation contains sensitive topics, ones he wants to hide
“I briefly considered some kind of magic to be at work because of his connections with the occult but disregarded it quickly. Not only is a suicide spell out of character for Freakshow—and also shown no prior attempts to it or any signs of thinking about suicide—but the display of cryokinesis doesn’t fit into the larger picture. And while Freakshow was noted to use magic, he does not possess an innate talent for it like Zatanna. According to Waller, Freakshow’s magic is more in line with alchemy, and his cell was swept every time he leaves it for any contraband or suspicious items.”
He paused the footage and rewound it to when Freakshow sat down in front of the mirror. “So, we can presume that he was talking to the culprit meaning three things.” He held up his index finger. “The first is that his murderer was in the cell with him but managed to remain unseen, perhaps because of some new cloaking technology, though it’s more likely that invisibility of some sort is part of their meta-ability.” He raised another finger. “The second is that Freakshow could sense the presence of the culprit and has enough of a relationship with them to hold a seemingly civil conversation. And the third—” he held up a third finger then curled his hand into a fist— “Freakshow was unable to call for help. Why?
“He was overshadowed.”
Bruce snapped his head to Damian. The words were quiet, so quiet in fact he nearly missed them.
“What did you say?”
Damian clamped his mouth shut, eyes widening imperceptibly as if he, too, was shocked to have said it out loud. Quickly he smoothed his face, features receding into an impassive stare as he took a step back from the monitor.
Bruce decided to press further. “Damian.”
Damian pursed his lips, eyebrows pinched in such a way to indicate that he was deliberating something. “It’s…” He trailed. “How much do you believe in ghosts?”
If someone had asked that question to Bruce when he was sixteen, ten, or even seven years old, he would have answered with a resounding no. Ghosts—restless spirits, monsters, things that go bump in the night—were all mere figments of imagination. Now, however, having lived in the time of gods and superheroes, intergalactic politics, and magic …
“I believe enough.” He tilted his head, a piece of some unknown puzzle slowly making itself known. “You are referring to Amity Park’s breed of ghosts.”
Damian gave a curt nod. “Grandfather was always trying to learn more about the Lazarus Pit. He had some assets—scientists—within Amity Park tasked to do just that. Of course once these ghosts began to appear, grandfather was immediately informed,” he explained. “From what I’ve learned, overshadowing is some kind of possession, it’s an ability that all of Amity’s ghosts can utilize.”
“So you believe Freakshow was overshadowed by one of these ghosts.” The explanation, for lack of another, worked. The lack of any physical evidence, no forced entry or exit—all evidence that could be explained away by ‘the ghost was invisible,’ as much as it irked Bruce to say. Freakshow’s connections with the occult only strengthened the theory.
According to the penitentiary’s blueprints, Freakshow’s cell was lined with a special type of metal composed of ectoranium—a rare mineral with anti-ghost properties. A preventative measure in case Freakshow’s partner, Lydia, or any other ghost tried to help him escape. It should have been impossible for any ghost to phase their way into the prison.
Unless the ghost walked in with Freakshow.
“The eyes give it a way. Look—” Damian reached over to rewind the footage, pausing it at a specific moment. “—His eyes are normal here.” He points at Freakshow’s irises, dark gray due to the grayscale footage of the CCTV, plays the video, and then pauses it again a few seconds later. “But if you look at his eyes now, you can see the faint indication of a glow around his eyes. The color value of the irises are lighter, too. One of the biggest tells if someone is being overshadowed by a ghost is the glow and the change in eye color. “
Another review through the footage revealed that Freakshow’s eyes changed multiple times, often reverting back to his original eye color when he was speaking, and then changing when he was silent.
Bruce grunted, fingers drumming a steady staccato on the arm of his chair, head leaning on his knuckles. Their culprit was a ghost. That information certainly changed things. Not only was Bruce’s suspect list now wiped clean and placed Freakshow’s murder as the lynchpin of their case, there was also the worrying implication that the League of Shadows held command over an extradimensional being whose powerset he was not familiar with.
He glanced up at Damian. “What else do you know about ghosts?”
Damian shrugged. “Not as much as I’d like. Grandfather didn’t share much with me.”
“Hm.” He rose from his seat and set a hand on Damian’s shoulders with a light smile. “You head up first. I’m sure Alfred needs help setting the table.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll head up after you. There’s still one last thing I need to do.”
Damian raised an imperious eyebrow before ducking his head and heading to the elevator. Bruce watched his son’s retreating back, hands tucked into the pockets of his jeans. His eyes narrowed, the corners of his mouth downturned.
Damian was hiding something.
◆◆
Beneath the eerie, grim torchlight, Plasmius observed the Sarcophagus of Forever Sleep. It stood, looming above a raised dais where a throne might have been, once. Beneath it on each side were two pedestals encased in glass, protecting the two most powerful artifacts of the Infinite Realms.
The glass cases were a mere formality, however. No one would steal either of the artifacts. To take only one of them would render the artifact useless as only with the ring and crown combined could the awesome power of the Infinite Realms be harnessed. Taking both would be an even riskier gamble. The crown and ring would only deign to bestow its powers on those it deems worthy. Strong. If the wearer did not suit, then the artifacts would eviscerate them before they could even blink.
It was strange to think that Pariah Dark’s awakening would be the felix culpa that saved Plasmius from his own demise.
Plasmius was prideful and vain in nature, but even he was self-aware enough to realize that the artifacts would only accept those equal or greater in power to Pariah Dark— and Vlad was simply not that. Even the Ancients, powerful as they were and the original victors against the old king, were not considered worthy. The only one who might have come close was young Daniel.
‘Close’ being the key word here.
It was unfortunate that the boy never stayed long enough to grow into his powers. If he did, he might have become someone powerful. Someone worthy. A king. (Only if it was under Vlad’s terms after all. A child monarch was never without an older and wiser regent at their shoulder. Taking Phantom under his own tutelage would be a worthless endeavor if Vlad could not come out on top).
Instead Daniel ran away, squirreled himself into a hovel so deep that neither of Vlad’s ghostly nor mortal resources could dig him up. (Yes, Daniel ran away. Was missing. No matter what forensics or the police or his own private investigators tried to say, that mauled and burned body placed beside the Fenton memorial was not Daniel James Fenton. The boy was still alive. It was only a matter of where.)
The sarcophagus shuddered.
Plasmius lifted his gaze to the death mask of Pariah Dark. “It is weakening,” he said, voice reverberating across the near empty throne room. He pivoted on his heel, a sardonic grin on his face as he faced Fright Knight. “Should we prepare for His Majesty to awaken any time soon?
Fright Knight cut an imposing figure in the torch light. “No.” Plasmius could not tell if the ghost was disappointed or relieved. “The sarcophagus holds strong still. In a year or in a decade, my king may wake once more, but that time is not today. For now, he rests in a fitful sleep.”
“A year or ten…how comforting.” Plasmius rolled his eyes. “What brings you here, then?”
“It is the duty of a knight to protect his liege lord against all things.”
“Oh don’t go pretending you’re a loyal knight now. Not when you betrayed your lord the last time.”
Fright Knight narrowed his eyes, then gave a derisive snort. “No, I suppose not. If you must know, half-breed, I was summoned by my creator, and regardless of my own desires I am obliged to answer the call.”
“Your creator— Pariah?”
Fright Knight shook his head.
“Then who—?” He turned to look at the dais again. At the sarcophagus. At the crown of fire and the ring of rage emitting a preternatural glow.
Ah. That explained it.
Of the many paradoxes there were in the world, Vlad’s favorite one concerned the nature of Omnipotence. There were many versions of the Omnipotence Paradox, but the most well known one went like this: could god create a stone so heavy that he could not lift it? While there were many answers to the question and many conflicting ideas, Vlad favored the notion that an omnipotent being could do absolutely anything it desires except that which compromises its own omnipotence. If god is essentially omnipotent, then he cannot make a stone that he cannot lift, for that would mean making a stone that is equal in power to god.
Vlad often wondered why Fright Knight never attempted to seize the sovereign’s artifacts for himself, what with his predilection for ruling. Though bestowed with the title of knight , anyone could see that Fright Knight's true desire was rulership. Dominion . A desire that he could never satiate. The closest he could ever come to it was to serve and stand close to power.
Apparently it was not because Fright Knight didn’t want the artifacts, but because he was, by nature, incapable of wielding them. The artifacts cannot create something stronger than themselves, and they refuse to be worn by anything it perceived as lesser than them.
“My, my,” Plasmius laughed. “It must have absolutely burned you to bend the knee to Pariah Dark.”
The fiery plume on his helmet flared dangerously bright as Fright Knight let out an inhuman growl. “Watch your tongue before I relieve you of it.”
Plasmius held up his hands in mock-surrender. “So, why did your creator call you to Pariah’s Keep?”
Fright Knight paused, intrigued. “Can you not hear it?" He asked. "They are singing.”
Vlad strained his ears, but he heard nothing. Just the echoey silence of the throne room and the flickering of torchlights and Fright Knight’s armor.
If Fright Knight had a mouth, he would smirk. “No, you cannot, can you? Someone of your ilk is not privileged enough to hear their song. But I suppose there’s enough of a ghost in you that you can feel the artifacts’ call even if you cannot hear it.” He quiets, head inclined just so as if he were listening to the song right now. As if the artifacts were speaking to him. “They are in mourning.”
“What would they even be mourning about?”
“A lack of purpose,” he said. “For what is the worth of a tool if nobody uses it?”
Vlad frowned. So they are the reason why the Ghost Zone has been so agitated recently. Like Eris and the golden apple of discord, the artifacts have thrown their song all across the Infinite Realms, proclaiming to everyone to prove their worth, to prove their strength. Even Pariah Dark, trapped in his slumber, cannot resist the call.
Even Plasmius, who was deaf to its song, was drawn to this place.
Plasmius rubbed his hand across his face. “It will tear the Infinite Realms apart just to find someone strong enough to wield it.”
“Perhaps,” said Fright Knight. “You cannot hide your portal forever. It will be found, mark my words.”
“Is that a threat?”
“A warning, Plasmius. If you wish to preserve what modicum of peace you have in the material world, then you would do well to close the portal and destroy it.”
Plasmius’ face curled into a snarl. “You know I can’t do that.”
“Then you invite your own folly.” With a dramatic flourish of his cloak, violet flames licking at the cobbled floor, Fright Knight leveled the Soul Shredder between Plasmius’ eyes. “Challengers will seek out the Uncrowned to prove their mettle, collateral damage be damned. They will find him, or he will find them."
“Will you be one of them, then? A challenger?”
Fright Knight stilled, anger simmering just above his armor. “Mocking me, are you? No, a challenger I am not. My grand purpose in this world is to guard my creators, bestow them to and swear my oaths to my future liege lord, whoever that may be.”
With those parting words, Fright Knight flew off, taking his post at the entrance of the keep, leaving Plasmius alone in the presence of the ring and crown. To bear their heavy gaze.
(Something within him, something that he once thought controlled, thought leashed to his will, reared its head. Want , it said. Want-have-mine. It gnawed at the back of his mind like a starving rat chewing on the bars of its cage. Want-have-mine-want-prove-prove-worthy.)
Vlad squashed that voice with a grimace. He was the one in control, not his ghost. He was stronger than such baser instincts.
(Prove-worthy-power)
Danielle had been working far too hard lately, and as a result she’s been in and out of the portal more times than Plasmius would prefer. It was attracting too much attention. Perhaps a quick vacation was in order.
Besides, it wouldn’t do to reject an invitation from Bruce Wayne himself now, would it?

The Cut: Florida Wants to Teach Kids That Slavery Was Good
It’s a hell of a time to be a teacher in Florida. Amid an alarming sea of Republican-backed changes to school curriculums in the state, its board of education has voted unanimously to approve new standards for African American history classes in public schools. Going forward, middle-schoolers will explore “how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit” as one part of the syllabus.
Another update the board considered crucial: High-school lessons about anti-Black violence throughout the 20th century — examples of which include the Atlanta race massacre, the Tulsa massacre, the Rosewood massacre, and the 1920 Ocoee massacre — will apparently cover “acts of violence perpetrated against and by African Americans.” The board claimed its retelling would ensure “the darkest parts of our history are addressed,” but in every case, these incidents involved white mobs attacking Black communities. The Ocoee massacre, for example, is considered the deadliest instance of Election Day violence in U.S. history, one Florida schools have only been required to teach to students since 2020. It saw white supremacists slaughter an estimated 35 Black people, as well as burn down some 22 homes and multiple churches, in an effort to keep Black Ocoee residents from voting. Speaking at the board meeting, state senator Geraldine Thompson — who, per the Washington Post, helped install the massacre on state lesson plans to begin with — pointed out that the new framing “suggests that the massacre was sparked by violence from African Americans” and thereby blames its victims.
At the same time, the standards are consistent with Florida governor Ron DeSantis’s ongoing crusade against factually accurate Black history education in schools. Last year, he introduced a “Stop WOKE Act” that would prevent schools, universities, and private businesses from acknowledging topics, including structural racism and privilege, that may provoke “guilt, anguish, or any form of psychological distress” in some (read: white) students. A federal judge swiftly struck down the law as a violation of the First Amendment, but DeSantis appears to be attempting a comeback, while several state universities have reportedly already modified their critical race theory courses.
In January, DeSantis rejected a request from the College Board to introduce a new AP African American History Studies course, claiming that a litany of curriculum points, including reparations and intersectionality, went against state law. He also took issue with the program’s inclusion of the phrase “white supremacist capitalist patriarchy” in bell hooks’s writing, its mentionof “Black Queer Studies” as a concept, and its support for “ending the war on Black trans, queer, gender nonconforming, and intersex people.” In May, he passed legislation banning gender studies and critical race theory degrees and prohibiting Florida universities from using federal or state funds for DEI programs. Last month, he claimed on Fox News that he plans to abolish the U.S. Department of Education if elected president.
In the wake of this latest effort to whitewash American history, dozens of lawmakers, activists, and educators spoke out against the new board of education guidelines. The state’s teachers union called the news “a big step backward,” asking in a statement, “How can our students ever be equipped for the future if they don’t have a full, honest picture of where we’ve come from?” NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson added, “Today’s actions by the Florida state government are an attempt to bring our country back to a 19th-century America where Black life was not valued, nor our rights protected.” Florida Wants to Teach Kids That Slavery Was Good

A woman who escaped a cinderblock cell in a man's garage in Klamath Falls, Oregon, was abducted hundreds of miles away last month in Seattle, and now authorities are looking for more potential victims across multiple states.
The man, 29-year-old Negasi Zuberi of Klamath Falls, posed as an undercover police officer and kidnapped the woman in the early morning hours July 15, then shackled, sexually assaulted her and locked her up, according to court records.
He was arrested and federally charged with interstate kidnapping, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted, Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan Lichvarcik said at a news conference Wednesday.
Authorities said Zuberi has been linked to sexual assaults in at least four more states, and they are searching for more potential victims. He's lived in multiple states since 2016, possibly including California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Alabama, and Nevada, the FBI said.
Fighting for her life, she escaped bloodied
The victim in Klamath Falls, who wasn't identified, "briefly slept and awoke to the realization that she would likely die if she did not attempt to escape," according to a criminal complaint.
The "makeshift" cell was made of cinderblocks and a metal door that had been installed backwards so it couldn't be opened from the inside, the complaint said. There was also an exterior door, and the cell had been built to be soundproof, Klamath Falls police said in a press release.
She banged against the door, bloodying and bruising her hands, until she managed to open it, the FBI in Portland said Wednesday. According to Klamath Falls Police Captain Rob Reynolds, the victim was able to break welds on the door, rip a metal screen off of it, and crawl out. She had lacerations on her knuckles from punching the door and walls, Reynolds said.
She then retrieved a gun that belonged to Zuberi and escaped. She climbed over a fence and flagged down a driver who called 911.
"The woman fought for her life, beating the doors and the walls of this cell with bloodied hands," Stephanie Shark, the assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s Portland field office, said Wednesday. "The victim’s focus, actions and her will to survive triggered a law enforcement response that may have actually saved many other women from a similar nightmare."
"The victim is strong and courageous and right now she is physically OK," Shark said, adding that she was being offered resources.
'There are more victims'
Zuberi had solicited the victim to engage in prostitution before telling her he was an undercover officer, the criminal complaint said. He drove her about seven hours and 450 miles away, officials said Wednesday.
"Sadly, we believe there are more victims," Shark said.
The FBI said investigators believe Zuberi has used different methods to "gain control" of victims, including drugging their drinks, impersonating law enforcement officers and soliciting sex workers before "violently sexually assaulting them. Klamath Falls police said the victim reported that Zuberi had "police patches, a taser, and other law enforcement equipment."
"Some of the encounters may have been filmed to make it appear as if the assault was consensual," the FBI in Portland said in a press release. "The victims are threatened with retaliation if they notify the police."
He was arrested in Reno, Nevada, in a Walmart parking lot where he was with his wife and one of his children.
Handwritten notes found appear to show planning
In his house, authorities seized notes that were handwritten and included a sketch of an underground structure with "foam insulation" and "waterproof concrete," according to the criminal complaints. One of the notes featured the title "Operation Take Over" and a to-do list:
"Leave phone at home"
"Make sure they dont have a bunch of ppl in their life. You dont want any type of investigation."
The home where Zuberi held the woman in the garage is owned by Klamath Falls Mayor Carol Westfall and her husband, Kevin Westfall, according to court records. They evicted him after his arrest.
The Westfalls said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY on Wednesday they are "shocked and dismayed."
"We applaud the actions of the woman who helped capture this person and prevent him from committing further atrocities," they said.
An attorney listed as representing Zuberi in court records didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from USA TODAY on Wednesday. Zuberi is also known by the names Justin Joshua Hyche, Sakima Zuberi, and Justin Kouassi, court records show.
He's expected to appear in court in the coming weeks after being returned to Oregon, Lichvarcik said.

The Devil is in the Details
By Ashley Sias
I have been planning events since the age of 13. My mother owned a business for children's birthday parties and my sisters, and I helped her every weekend. I learned a lot in those years. There is no such thing as part time or "time off" when it comes to events. Being in event management, your work is earned with blood, sweat and tears.
After college, I worked with Kelly Murphy for Events on the Loose and The South Beach Wine and Food Festival as culinary support. My role over the years grew into sponsor installs, design, and chef equipment preparation not only for this festival but many others around South Florida.
Let's face it, event rental production and event management is not all sunshine and rainbows! More often than not, you find herself in a do-or-die (if you will), make-it-work situation. And the people who make it, find a way to roll with the punches with a smile on their face. It seems inevitable that something will happen where you must think on your feet. Whether it be something that broke in transit or a change in plans for activation installs.
Making it work, and striving for excellence is a huge part of Events on The Loose's mission. There are a lot of misconceptions about the events industry in general. Most people think items just show up and BAM you have a beautiful event. It takes hard work, precision, drive, and confidence to pull it all together. As they say, "The Devil in the Details"!
The event world is not for everyone, but I love what I do and working for Events on the Loose!

When his SR-71 pitched up and slammed into a KC-135Q tanker at 26,000 feet, Blackbird RSO Maj. Mortimer J. Jarvis knew it was time to go. The pilot, Lt. Col. Buddy Brown, ejected from the damaged SR-71 and Mortimer was right behind him.
While doing research on Buddy Brown I found this article on The X-Hunters website. I was living at Beale when this happened and I remember hearing about Colonel Brown breaking both of his legs, he recovered and went on to have a fantastic career in the Air Force. Today October 14, 2023, Habu’s family is all saddened to hear that Mort’s wife Arlene Jarvis passed away they had been married for 70 years❤️
On Jun. 17, 1970, Lt. Col. Buddy L. Brown and Maj. Mortimer J. Jarvis of the 1st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron were scheduled for a crew training flight. The crew was also to test a newly installed defensive avionics system (DEF F) over the range at Eglin Air Force Base (AFB), Florida.
Two KC-135Q tankers took off first and proceeded to the BUSY PALACE refueling track near Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Brown and Jarvis entered the cockpit of the SR-71 and prepared for takeoff. Engine start and run-up were completed without incident. Using call sign ASPEN 33, they took off from Beale AFB, California, and proceeded to BUSY PALACE.
ASPEN 33 accomplished climb, acceleration, and high-Mach cruise, followed by a descent into the BUSY PALACE refueling track. Brown hooked up with the first KC-135Q, OSSAL 59, without incident. After transferring 35,000 pounds of fuel, Brown disconnected, and maneuvered to hook up with OSSAL 73, near El Paso, Texas. Contact with the second tanker was smooth and effective. Three minutes later, following transfer of 16,000 pounds of fuel, the SR-71 suddenly dropped four to six feet. As Brown attempted to stabilize the aircraft, it pitched up and struck the tanker. The crew of OSSAL 73 heard and felt the collision. The boomer, CMSgt. Eckley watched in horror as the aircraft pitched upward with such rapidity that he had no time to take action or call for a breakaway. The black shape of the SR-71 briefly filled the boomer’s window, the tanker shuddered with the impact, and the stricken spyplane dropped away.
The Blackbird’s canopy glass fractured, causing Brown to lose all outside references. Also, his control panel had broken loose from it mounts and he was unable to control the airplane. Brown called Jarvis over the intercom to order him to eject, but Jarvis never heard him. Jarvis saw the flash as Brown bailed out, and the PILOT EJECTED light on his instrument panel. Jarvis then ejected, and both crewmembers parachuted to safety.
Eckley reported the collision to the flight crew over the tanker’s intercom. Maj. Roland and Capt. Messenger checked their flight controls and determined that the KC-135 was still airworthy. They then reported the accident to Albuquerque Air Traffic Control Center and told them to initiate recovery procedures for the downed SR-71 crew. Moments earlier, when his SR-71 pitched up and slammed into a KC-135Q tanker at 26,000 feet, Jarvis knew it was time to go. The pilot, Lt. Col. Buddy Brown, ejected from the damaged SR-71 and Jarvis was right behind him.
It was June 1970 and the crew was high above the desert landscape near El Paso, Texas, testing out new equipment in the aircraft.
With both crew members safely on the ground, the 1st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron airmen, out of Beale Air Force Base, were rescued by a helicopter from Fort Bliss.
The Yuba City resident ( Mort Jarvis )continued flying as a navigator in the SR-71 for another three years and found satisfaction in the intelligence being gathered whether it was mapping radar sites or taking photographs.
He retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1973 after 20 years in the Air Force. Happy to report that Mort Jarvis is living in California. Buddy Brown passed away several years ago. All of the Air Force officers that ejected from the SR-71 survived.

Florida Home Inspection Standards of Practice
61-30.801 Standards of Practice, General.
(1) Home inspections performed to these Standards of Practice are intended to provide the client with information regarding the overall condition of installed systems and components of the home based on observation of the visible and apparent condition of the structure and components at the time of the home inspection and to report on those systems and components inspected that, in the professional opinion of the inspector, are significantly deficient or at the end of their service lives.
