UPDATE I remembered this one series from the same universe but a bit different, and with the help of the Wayback Machine (beloved) I found book one, Les Résistants (The Resistants), which I downloaded the epub of, and the Wayback Machine seems to have all the chapters of book 2, Les Traîtres (The Traitors) so like. Now is the time I learn how to make an ebook I supode. Calibre tutorials here I come!

Oh my fucking god!!! A few years ago I still hung out on Wattpad and I stumbled upon this book, Bienvenue au Mordret's Pub (Welcome to (the) Mordret's Pub I suppose?) and it has INSANE worldbuilding and the characters are super interesting. It's a small book published online by the authors and it's only in french so I can't recommend it but I love it so much.

It's about this girl, Naola, a 15 year-old witch from a well-off, loving family, who has a happy life until one day a man from their equivalent to the police/secret services knocks at her door when her parents aren't here and asks for help. He's wounded and a policeman so she lets him in and tries to help, but her dad comes back because he just got a message that the Order, a paramilitary group of wizard-fascists, was in the neighbourhood and looking for a man from the secret services. He's afraid if they find the guy they're looking for here his family will suffer for trying to hide him, so he surrenders the man to them, and they torture and kill him before Naola's eyes, which understandably leaves her shaken. In the morning, when she's had time to process the whole thing, she realises she's disgusted at her parents for being so cowardly, and she runs away from home, planning to find a summer job before going back to school in september. Obviously, she struggles with that, but after a few adventures she finds a job working in (the) Mordret's Pub (I don't know if I should put an article because the pub is named after the owner but also it's the name of the pub, not just "Mordret's pub"). Mordret is a vampire who needed a waitress because a vampire bar with a boss involved in pretty dangerous circles means turnover can be high, and through like, mafia reasons, she kind of has to work for him, and they get closer, plus she also realises things about their world, what her job actually entails, and she grows a lot as a person.

When I say the worldbuilding is insane I mean it's hitting ALL the right spots for me. The world is our world but in the future after a catastrophic event that changed everything. The vampires are really cool. I like the magic system. The CATACLYSM and the VAMPIRES. There's fascist wizards but the figurehead is interesting. Literally it is SO INTERESTING. Like okay I have a problem with vampires but not only are the vampires good the authors kept this classic (it's classic in french HP vampire fic at least) trope of the vampires having this one person they "tie" themselves to, and you can do whatever you want with it but generally it means the person is the vampire's walking "blood bank" and they have a close relationship, often romantic tbh, sometimes you have powers on top or whatnot but that's the base of it. I haven't seen it a lot in english but my vampire days are somewhat over so I can't be sure. So the vampires are cool, they're like immortal but they give off NO vibes at all, like they're not really here even when they are, except when they make noticeable in which case they're scary, and they move quick but they creep everyone out, and they leave most human concepts of friendship or morals with their humanity. The magic system is fun because they use items to focus their magic, but not like wands, they just have to be made with iris, and there's spells but it kind of depends, it's like precise enough that you have an idea what they can do or not with magic but not too precise that you have enough details to start pointing out problems.

I really like the character of Mordret and how he and Naola interact/their relationship, they're fun. I personally think it would be dope if they had actually tied themselves to each other instead of Naola saying no, which I mean, I understand being 15 and not wanting to be an old vampire's food source but he's clearly more fun than Maden (says girl who is comically biased in favour of older vampires). Lowkey I was happy when Maden gets exiled somewhere at the end of the book because I thought 1) great, no childhood sweethearts, we are past the need childhood sweethearts, let her find the love of her life when she's like 25 at least please, and 2) maybe that'll clear the space for a bigger focus on her relationship with Mordret, but alas. I mean I understand, honestly, I just really like Mordret for some reason. Like no I would not like him if I had him in front of me but most of the characters I like are like this so whatever. I think it would be neat if it wasn't romantic but just like, a close friendship, because Naola gets pretty comfortable being frank with him (or even rude tbh), she tells him like it is even when he's a scary and powerful guy, and he tolerates it (to a certain extent) + he takes care of her, so clearly they've got something going on. I know Mordret thinks about going there with her but she says ew no and fair, plus it does make things interesting because it's not like, a romantic rejection but I like the one-sided-ness of it, like he was okay with that but not her. Anyway. I'm totally going to have OCs who have that going on though.

ANYWAY I might just buy the books properly because they're digital so they're way less expensive than Ileana and I feel bad for reading them from copies I found illegally. That's not very nice of me regarding these independent indie authors y'know. Also I want to finish this fanart piece I started YEARS ago and never finished because I can do it now!! I have the skills!! Charm and Leuthar fullbodies here I come!!!
