Here's The Deal Podcast - The Max Baker Jr. Story - Episode 102 - "The Lost Episode" (2006)
Our fact checker Jeff Brownen discovered a "Lost Episode" (as you're reading this, say it with 1950's fading echo, lost episode... lost episode... lost episode....)... This episode begins on March 17th, 2006 at the Cains Ballroom with Opeth & DevilDriver.... Followed by the Shirts For A Cure Tour w/ Thursday & Minus The Bear & The Number 12 Looks Like You at the Cains Ballroom! Nine Inch Nails at the Ford Center with Saul, Max reminisces about seeing NIN live at Kinetics in Bricktown on the Pretty Hate Machine Tour. Max once again did a two stage local metal show at the Cains that had Horse Called War on the bill. We also discuss the very first Bullet For My Valentine show in Oklahoma at Curly's with Forte, which was legendary... A brand-new metal band, with young kids, with all the hype behind them on the same bill with Metal / Thrash legends Forte.... If you were asked to guess who would have the best grass, Willie, Merle, or Ray Price? Most would have no idea that it would be Ray Price.... If you know, you know!

Episode 1018-1020: The Antique Tray Can't Be Hidden
Tumblr media
Based on volume 97-98, files 1035-1038
Plot in five keywords:
Agasa hired an antique appraiser to appraise an antique tray
Three people, who own the same tray, hired the same appraiser to find out which one is the original
The appraiser is killed by one of them, who has the original tray, but doesn’t own it
The appraiser left fingerprints on the back of the original tray
But the culprit left the same marks on the other trays as well
Important plot development:
Conan tells Ai that Sera thinks that she shrank as well. Ai warns Conan of the BO again
Shuichi keeps an eye on Sera, disguised as Okiya
Masumi visits Agasa to observe Ai
Shuichi wants to ask Masumi a question
Sera asks Ai if she’d taken the same drug as Conan and asks how old she is. She also tries to get information about the APTX
Shuichi doesn’t want Masumi to get involved in the storyline with the BO
When Sera mentions Mary (using the past tense to describe her boob size), Akai asks if Mary is dead
Akai thinks that Masumi is hiding a secret and thinks it has something to do with Mary but wants to see it himself. Conan already knows what might have happened to her.
Shuichi has a flashback of what happened 17 years ago: Tsutomu told his family to return to Japan while he wants to investigate in the case of Koji Haneda’s death. He thinks that an organization is involved and wants to keep his family safe
Conan thinks that Mary is a member of the MI6 and that she’s the mother of Masumi, Shuichi and Shukichi and that she shrunk as well
Conan wants to ask Akai if Mary is a member of the MI6, but doesn’t get the chance to do so
Conan is unsure about Mary’s goals
Masumi thinks that Subaru could be Shuichi in disguise because he knew that she’s a girl and said 50/50
Masumi asks Mary about the phrase 50/50. Mary tells her it’s one of her favorite phrases and that Tsutomu and Shuichi used it as well
Mary asks Masumi to get more information about the APTX, but Mausmi thinks it will get complicated because of Subaru
Rating:
7/10 antique trays
It’s not my favorite case, but it’s still pretty interesting. In my opinion, the episodes feel a bit stretched. It could have been a two-parter as well. But the flashback scene is great. Watch it, it’s plot relevant.

“Success is never owned it, it is only rented – and the rent is due every day”
Health can never be owned. There is no shortcut or onetime payment you can make to become healthy for life. Similarly to Spotify and Netflix, it is a long term subscription that has to be paid daily. Get rid of the idea that there is one thing that can solve all of your problems. I know it is easy to believe, who wouldn’t want that. That is why marketing for all the bullshit weight loss supplement stuff is so successful, people want the easy way out. Good health is gained from the sum of little actions completed consistently every single day.
This was supposed to be a quick Face Book status update originally but I got carried away and wrote a 3,000 word essay on it. It contains the reference of the quote; me bunging on a bit more about rent being due every day and trying to be funny occasionally; my thoughts about why paying rent (doing healthy behaviours) is so tough for some people; and some practical strategies about how to make paying rent (doing healthy behaviours) easier.
“Success is never owned it, it is only rented – and the rent is due every day”
This quote is originally from Rory Vaden in the book ‘Take the Stairs’, although I recently heard it from Danny Lennon on his ‘Sigma Nutrition’ podcast in episode #102 (https://sigmanutrition.com/episode102/). I think the quote was originally made in the context of business success, although Danny spoke briefly about how this can be applied to a range of behaviours. I thought it was a fantastic idea and would like to expand upon this further in the context of health.
Health can never be owned. There is no pill that can be taken; no one specific food that can be eaten; no magic juice detox that can be followed; no single exercise that can be performed; and no behaviour that can be done once or twice, for a week or a for a month that will make you fit and healthy for the rest of your life.
Modern life demands a lot from people. The ability to juggle work, education, family and friends, and still have time to cook healthy meals and exercise is tough. No wonder people get poor sleep, are stressed, eat poorly and exercise infrequently.  I think this is why the supplement industry and quick fix diet fads are so successful. What time poor person doesn’t want to be able to take a pill to not have to spend time in the gym and kitchen each day and cut two hours of sleep out each night?
The hard truth - Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. There is no quick fix and there is no one time price that you can pay for health. Think of it like Spotify and Netflix, you don’t own them, you can’t just pay a one off fee and have them forever, oh no, that would be too easy and convenient. You have to give them money each month and once you stop, you get cut off. The same applies for health, but instead of monthly the rent is due every single day. You can be the healthiest and fittest person on the planet, and I assure you they will be paying their rent, but if you stop paying and decide to sit on the couch and eat chicken wings all day, then you will very quickly lose your health subscription.
I think the idea of constantly having to work on health can be off-putting sometimes, especially if you don’t have healthy habits already. The thought of having to make yourself go to the gym and eat things you don’t want to (like vegetables - yuck) every single day for the rest of your life can seem overwhelming and miserable. I also think that it can be disheartening when you see other people who are healthy and fit and it seems to come so easily to them. That alone can make you want to give up before you even try.
I want to pull two points out of that last paragraph and deconstruct them. Firstly, let’s look at values. Everyone values different things and to different degrees. There is also limited time available to get shit done. So we can conclude that you will never have enough time to be a master of everything, there has to be trade-offs. I think that is pretty obvious.
Now some context. I personally highly value health and fitness. I don’t just want to exercise to be fit and healthy; I want to be the fastest, strongest and fittest. I also value education, especially in health. I don’t just want to know enough to get by, I want to know everything and be the best. On the flip side, I don’t really care too much for partying on weekends (anymore) and having a shit ton of money to spend on fancy yachts, gold coated mansions, upper end drugs and high class hookers. So being fit and healthy come easy to me but making the dollars does not. I spend a lot of my time doing exercise and reading, but don’t have much time for other things, like getting rich. I look at successful business people and it seems like it is easy for them and they must be lucky. If only I was lucky then I could make lots of cash doing nothing also. The reality is (in most cases) they work hard for what they have and pay their rent every single day to get where they are. The only reason it may be easier for them, is because they value success in business more than I do, so it becomes easier to the little things they need to do every day and they spend more time doing it; just as it is easier for me to do the little things to be healthy every day.
The take home point from this is that even though it might look like health and fitness comes easy to some people and they don’t have to do anything to achieve what they have, the reality is that they most likely highly value it and are working long and hard for it. Working hard and paying rent every day. So this shouldn’t be a reason to discourage you from your trying to be healthy and fit yourself. You may have to try harder than them to motivate yourself, but it might not be to the degree you think. This leads us to the second point.
The second point I want to make is, the thought of having to do something you don’t like every single day to be stay healthy, doesn’t have to be such a terribly thing. It’s all about how you look at it. We now know that having higher values for things (business, health, performance etc.) make motivation easier for people to accomplish them and if you highly value something, then you probably want to be an overachiever and be the best. So if you find health behaviours difficult (exercising, eating healthy etc.), it might be because it’s not a priority on your value list, which isn’t a bad thing, it is what it is. You might think that your time is better spent elsewhere, instead of three hours a day in the gym. The trick is to not compare yourself to other people that are over achieving. Just because they are exercising multiple times a day and weighing every ingredient they eat, doing calculus to make sure they have reached the 30.13g of protein they need in their meal and spending the day in social isolation, paying penance for the two pieces of chocolate they had last night. It doesn’t mean this is what it takes to be healthy, you don’t have to pay that much rent.
Rent does have to be paid though, but think about small things that can be achieved every day. The small things may seem insignificant, but it’s the sum of the small things that are done consistently that make up health. Get rid of the idea that there is one thing that can solve all your problems. I know it is easy to believe, who wouldn’t want that. That is why marketing for all this bullshit weight loss supplement stuff is so successful. The easiest way to do little things each day, that you don’t necessarily enjoy, is to take away the barriers of doing them or to make them enjoyable. The following part will give some practical strategies of how to make paying rent each day for your health subscription easier.
Strategies to make paying rent easier
Exercise
For exercise, this can mean breaking up long tiring workouts into multiply bouts of activity during the day or by decreasing the amount of time you are being still. A second example is to do things that you enjoy.
 -          Sit less. This can be done by parking further away from your destination; taking the stairs; getting up from your work desk every hour and go for a 5 minute walk around the office, or better yet, get a standing work station; go for a walk around the block before and/or after work; watch this video for more details https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6eIvxqaezE or this website and book http://www.juststand.org/GetUpBook/tabid/958/Default.aspx/
 -          Do activities you enjoy. I think a lot of people assume that exercise has to be done in a gym or going for a 10km run, but that is rubbish. Exercise should be activities that you enjoy. It can be going for a rainforest hike, rolling around with your dog, playing with your kids, kicking a ball around at the beach or practising fun and challenging skills that you want to learn, like doing a cartwheel or handstand etc. By doing things you enjoy, you get the exercise for free, just as if you have a job you love, you get the cash for free. See the following video for more details https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFVf7s_2WLw or check out this website https://www.primalplay.com/what-is-primal-play/.
 Eating
Healthy eating follows a similar concept. A lot of eating behaviour is driven by convenience and hedonic hunger (eating for pleasure). The best way to combat this is to pre-plan ahead and alter your environment to benefit you. People have to eat a few times every day. Let’s say that you eat 3 meals a day, that is 1,095 meals a year and 43, 800 meals over 40 years. I assume that most people eat more than 3 meals a day and that most people are going to live for longer than the next 40 years. But to keep things simple, you have at least another 43, 800 decisions you have to make about what to eat. Decisions use energy and are tiring, so the less you have to make the better it is for you. This can be practically applied to lots of situation as followed.
 -          Make snacks harder to obtain. One way to decrease snacking is to not have access to them. The more effort you need to expend to obtain them, the less likely you will eat them. If you do like having the occasional treat, but don’t know the difference between four pieces of chocolate and four bars, then pre-portioning a block of chocolate can help. This applies to any bulk packed treat food. Weigh or measure a sensible amount (4 pieces of chocolate is a good amount) and wrap in it foil, put it in a bag or a container and store it away in a high shelf out of sight. Yes it is still physically possible for you to eat all of it, but it makes it a little bit harder and also gives you time to think about your decision.
 -          Make fewer decisions about eating treats. Put all your treats in one location, ideally out of the way and out of view. Both of these strategies reduce the amounts of decisions you have to make about eating the food; it limits the amount of will power you have to use by denying yourself. Stashing all your eggs in one basket, so to speak, means that every time you open a cupboard door a treat isn’t there to tempt you. By moving your treats to one location opposed to having them in three, you are cutting decisions by a third. Even I can do that math. Having your secret stash a secret, meaning that it is kept in a bag, in another bag, which is in a box which is in a safe that has to be accessed by finger print, retina scan and 200ml blood type donation. Oh and the safe is kept across the road in a park surrounded by a moat that is swarming with sharks with flicking laze beams attached to their heads. Not only will this be a massive pain in the arse to get to, but out of sight is out of mind. You will only now and then stumble across it and the decision to resist will be much easier. The real life example of this would be keeping your goodies in a container that isn’t see through and putting it in another room in a high cupboard or somewhere that you don’t go often.
 -          Lower the hedonic value of the food. I don’t mean lace it with poison, although that could work. There are a number of factors at play when determining motivation to eat, to keep it simple I will talk about two now and a third in the next point. Physiological hunger is the body’s way of telling you that you need fuel. The easiest way to fix this is to eat food, ideally whole foods that are full of nutrients. Hedonic hunger on the other hand, is driven by the reward system in the brain. I don’t have to tell you what kinds of foods people find rewarding, but I will anyway, SUGARY, SALTY and FATTY ones. Unlike physiological hunger, hedonic hunger doesn’t really have an off switch, unless of course you explode from eating too much. Hedonic hunger multiplies when you are physically hungry, your senses are stronger and you will be more aware of high energy foods. Some practical things we can take from this. Avoid shopping on an empty stomach; I am sure everyone knows how hard it is to resist filling up your trolley with treats that would feel so good to demolish right now. If you can resist buying treats at the supermarket, then it makes it a hell of a lot harder to eat them when you are at home. Another strategy is to delay snacking until after a main meal. You have just go home from work or whatever, it’s an hour before dinner, you are a bit peckish and that pre-portioned chocolate bar or bag of chips that is sitting in the container, on the top shelf in the laundry seeming like a pretty good idea right now. Yeah sure, have the treat, but only after you have your main meal. Have your meal a bit earlier if you have to, but hold off from snacking until you have eaten. If your meal is made with whole foods and has adequate fiber, protein, carbohydrates, fats etc., then it is likely that your physical hunger will be satisfied and the treat that was looking so good before isn’t going to be as appealing any more. Even if you do still choose to have the treat, it will be much easier to enjoy the sensible portion size without wanting more.
 -          Another motivator of eating is habitual eating. Well it’s not really a motivator but more an unconscious behaviour. Habitual eating is an associative behaviour that has paired eating with a particular context. For example, eating popcorn at the movies, eating breakfast when you wake up, having cake at a birthday party and other celebrations, and eating everything that is on your plate. These habits are created a number of difference ways, including culturally and socially. They are thought of as normal or in most cases not thought about at all. The strategy here is to think a little deeper about when and why you eat and see how you can tweak things to your advantage. An example of this may be, eating from smaller plates, as you will eat less food but when the plate is empty it will give you the same cue to stop eating. Another strategy is to have cut up fruit or vegetable as a snack while watching a movie opposed to popcorn.
For more details on environment and eating behaviours, see this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKEbbTmxYGo or check this website http://mindlesseating.org/
Pre-planning and ‘If-Then what’ action plans
On a final note, pre-panning is the best strategy to save time and money, while overcoming barriers. For example, planning your weekly shopping list and prepping meals means that you not only save money and time having to do multiple trips to the shop, but it also reduces the decisions you have to make about buying treats and unnecessary snacks. Having meals prepped at home makes it more convenient to throw something together after a tiring day at work, thus reduces the appeal of takeaway food. Most people have a reasonably routine in their life and if you are human then you are blessed with higher cognitive functions giving you the ability to think about past and future events and plan ahead of time, abstractly pondering about what you would do in a specific scenario.  Use this to your advantage and come up with ‘if – then what’ action plans to reduce the amount of effort you need to use if a challenging scenario does come up. For example, you are trying to avoid drinking alcohol, except for special events such as birthday parties etc. You are a social person and go out with friends to dinner often, so it is reasonable to assume that at some point in the future you will go to a pub or restaurant where there will be alcohol served and your friends will be drinking. Instead of waiting until the last minute to decide what to do, when you are at dinner and your mate Henry asks what beer you want, which is likely to result in giving into the social norms and having a beer. You can pre-plan what you are going to do if such a situation occurs. IF I get offered a drink when I am at dinner etc., THEN I will ask for a lemonade or water. I wrote a more detailed blog post on this in the past, which can be found at http://tarzan-health.tumblr.com/post/124473141306/how-to-achieve-your-goals.
