A Whovian Watches Star Trek for the First Time: Part 093 - "Life is Change"

Star Trek: Enterprise - Season 4 Episode 21 - Terra Prime

Enterprise tries to block out Terra Prime's Signal, but nothing works. The Signal is too wide, and destroying the ship will blow up a colony on Mars. Terra Prime then start fearmongering about the baby. Later in the episode she gets named Elizabeth, and calling her that feels less clinical than just calling her "the baby". They also start to threaten to destroy Star Fleet command unless all aliens leave earth.

Enterprise tries to make a tactical retreat to Earth, and the Conference on Earth starts to be disrupted by several protests outside the various embassies. Archer's plan is to send in a stealth team. He sends Malcolm to meet Harris to find a way past the array's sensor grid. Apparently, within 10 meters of the planet's surface is a blind spot in the sensors. The plan is use a comet due to get reflected by the array to get onto the planets surface, then use this blind spot to travel from the Pole to the Array.

Meanwhile in the Colony, Trip and T'Pol finally get to see their daughter, and we find out that Terra Prime got Trip and T'Pol's DNA from a traitor on Enterprise, but who is this traitor? Trip is also coerced into improving the accuracy of the comet deflection array.

As I said last episode, I really like how Terra Prime and it's rhetoric parallels that of real world right wing populists. Both modern populists in their recruitment speeches, and older 1950's rhetoric around mixed race children when Paxton is talking about Elizabeth, and also just the fact that Terra Prime is Latin for "Earth First", which mirrors the names of a few real world nationalist groups. It's a brave choice for the episode to tackle this topic so directly!

We got a nice scene with Trip trying to deconstruct Terra Prime's rhetoric, and when that doesn't work we get to see him do the good old strategy of punching a space nazi, love to see it!

While Trip is doing good, Travis, Archer, Malcolm and Phlox start enacting their plan, and have a rough ride down onto mars. They have a rough landing, but they survive the entry into the Atmosphere, and the ride to the Array works.

I loved T'Pol just trying her best to be a mother and just talking to Elizabeth about how she needs a name in full Logic mode. Trio gets put in a prison cell, and I love seeing this guy at work, engineering a lockpick out of random scraps.

Earlier in the episode, T'Pol does a scan on Paxton, and apparently, Paxton is surviving through alien medicine. That kind of Hypocrisy is common in the type of person the episode is criticising and I love it here. When T'Pol got the scan, I was kinda worried that the episode would just have Paxton straight up be an alien, which I don't think would have worked as well, but just having that little bit of "rules for thee but not for me" hypocrisy goes a long way in characterising Paxton as a villain. T'Pol tries to use this information as Blackmail to get her, Trip and Elizabeth out of mars, but it doesn't work.

We get a brief scene of Hoshi in command, and she's actually a great leader, and I love seeing her stand up to the Governor who's pushing for the radical option of kabooming the array along with the colony.

As this is going on, the ground party encounter Trip, and they reach the control room, as Hoshi is in position to destroy the array. A firefight breaks out, and the room starts to depressurise. The struggle with Archer and Paxton fighting and switching the weapon on and off was great. Unfortunately, in the end the weapon fires. Thanks to trip though, the shot misses, and Earth is saved.

At the end of the Episode, we get a final scene with Trip and T'Pol naming the baby, as I mentioned Earlier, Elizabeth, naming her after Trip's sister. Unfortunately, because of Elizabeth's Unique nature, she has a genetic disorder and is dying. Phlox is trying his best, but he's unable to do anything. Elizabeth sadly passes away, and the scene really made me cry. Trip and T'Pol's grief is really well performed. However, they are given the hopeful note that it was a fault of the process, not of the specific combination of Vulcan and Human genes, even if it's less hopeful and more bittersweet for Trip and T'Pol specifically.

Meanwhile, Malcolm and Travis find that the shuttlepod had been tampered with, in a way that could have killed the ground crew is Travis wasn't such a skilled Pilot. They trace the Tampering through Kelby down to an Ensign Called Masaro, who would appear to be our Terra Prime Spy. Archer catches him, but Masaro takes his own life.

Finally at the end of the episode, we see Archer give a speech that finally kickstarts the alliance that I'm assuming leads to the Federation that Daniels kept going on about. While I wish there more seasons, it is still a really fitting note to leave off on, the galaxy coming together for the future, and it ties off all the themes of the series really beautifully.

Since the list I'm following says to skip episode 22 until much later, that's me finished enterprise now. I've grown really attached to this crew since I started this 93 days ago, and well, it's been a long road, getting from there to here.

JN: Not Jin distracting JK while Tae has his 2nd chance at the ping pong game. 

YG: Yoongi bluffing himself at 007...or did he? was it really a clever ploy or an advantageous distraction??

JH: Hobi is so quick to pass on most of the minigames. we want to see you try Hobi! Winning isn't that important. lol 

JM: Jimin really is the most entertaining 007 participant!

V: Loving the editors proving Tae was correct about his ping pong bounces. 

JK: JK instantly grabbing Yoongi's thigh when RM says his legs look thin...

Dragon Ball Super 093

“All right, hear me out.  We’ll call it ‘Dragon Ball Super,’ okay?  And we’ll spend the first 28 episodes redoing the movies, but with worse animation.  Then we’ll get in a tournament that’s a total mismatch, with each finish screwier than the last!  And then we’ll do a time travel story with an unsatisfying ending! Oh, and all our chins will be really pointy for some reason.  And then we’ll team up with Frieza!  Well, what do you think?”

Okay, so the Universe 7 team is down a man after Buu fell into a deep sleep, so they need a tenth member.  And they definitely need a tenth member.  As the Supreme Kai puts it, Grand Zeno specifically called for each universe to field a team of ten.  Showing up with nine might irritate Zeno enough to disqualify the team and destroy their universe before the event even begins.

So Goku’s big idea is to recruit Frieza.  No one likes the idea of resurrecting him with the Dragon Balls again, but Goku plans to use Fortuneteller Baba instead, as she has the power to bring back dead fighters for one day.  We saw her use this with Grandpa Gohan, then Goku, then Vegeta.  So even if Goku’s plan backfires, Frieza can only do so much mischief in a single days’ time. 

The others are still skeptical, and Vegeta suggests they get literally anyone to stand in as their tenth member.  That guy can jump out of the ring immediately and let the rest of them fight.  Goku asks Whis if they can win with just the nine of them, and Whis thinks they might be in trouble if they tried that.  He doesn’t know anything about the other teams, but he has heard of one universe with a mortal who defeated a God of Destruction.  I’m pretty sure he’s talking about Jiren, but he doesn’t get into specifics.  Whis also adds that this was no pushover god that was defeated, either.  This one was stronger than Beerus, and the mortal still won, so the competition will be stiff to say the least. 

Meanwhile, in Universe 6, Caulifla tries to get Kale to turn Super Saiyan, but Kale isn’t very confident about it.  Caulifla and Cabba try insulting Kale to get her mad, but that goes poorly, as Caulifla gets offended on Kale’s behalf.  While they bicker, Kale gets frustrated with her own inability and...

Whoa that ain’t good.  Or is it?

Meanwhile, in Universe 4, Ganos delivers news to Quitela and Kuru.  Ganos is one of the U4 team, but Quitela sent him to spy on Universe 7 and he learned about the plan to recruit Frieza.  This gives Quitela a brilliant idea...

Back in U6, Kale goes wild, attacking Cabba in particular.  Cabba speculates that Kale must have felt like she was being left behind with all this Super Saiyan business, and she’s lashing out in jealousy. 

So Caulifla gets between them and tells Kale that it’s ridiculous to think she’d be “attracted” to someone like Cabba, and Kale “means the world” to her.  Yeah, I think the dub abandoned any pretense of subtext, and this dialogue is more about how clearly they can spell it out without just announcing they’re gay.  I mean, this sort of talk is basically how they handled the Trunks/Mai relationship earlier in the series. 

Anyway, this calms Kale down, and Cabba realizes that he may have just found another recruit for the Tournament of Power.

In hell, Goku approaches Frieza with his proposal, and Frieza makes a counteroffer: He’ll join the team, but only if Goku agrees to wish Frieza back to life with the Dragon Balls.  Goku suggests that Frieza could use the Super Dragon Balls awarded at the end of the tournament, but Frieza doesn’t think so.  He doesn’t need a “super-wish” for his resurrection, and that prize only goes to the MVP of the team.  No, he’ll settle for a promise from Goku to wish him back with the regular Dragon Balls.  Goku is reluctant, but Frieza hints that he’s managed to get even stronger while in hell, but Goku won’t get to test himself against that power unless he wishes Frieza back.  And that convinces Goku to agree to his terms. 

Now, this always kind of bugged me, because Frieza seems to be under the mistaken impression that Earth’s Dragon Balls can revive him, even though Goku knows that they can’t be used to resurrect someone a second time.  Goku should be aware of this rule, since he’s had to cope with it on more than one occasion.  And yet, he agreed to Frieza’s terms without correcting him on the matter.  So was Goku tricking Frieza, or was he planning to use the Namekian Dragon Balls, and just didn’t want to bother explaining that to him?

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter, as we’ll see in the final episode, but it always bothered me how we didn’t know if Goku was playing Frieza or not. 

Anyway, Goku makes the arrangements with Baba, and we’re all set.

so interestingly I think this episode is only the second time Jon says the words "Ceaseless Watcher", and the first time was when he was explaining the whole Powers thing to Georgie in 093.

So, I’m on my way to the Grand Canyon, but apparently Arizona is full of cavernous earth. Because I’m standing in front of an absolutely enormous hole in the ground.

A meteor crashed here. I had no idea. Which is weird, right? Isn’t that something that everybody should just know? That we have an enormous meteor crater in our country? It feels noteworthy.

But no, I only learned about it from a road sign on Route 66. Thank goodness for tourist trap advertising, I guess. There’s a little viewing deck and everything—apparently, the meteor crashed here over fifty thousand years ago. The viewing deck has a pair of binoculars pointed at an astronaut suit they put in the middle of the crater. Which is a bit of an odd choice if you ask me, but looking through it does give you an idea of the scale.

If this is just a random meteor crater, how big is the Grand Canyon going to be? Was this all mundane to the average Arizona resident? I don’t know that I could handle it—the idea of driving around my state and stumbling across these massive voids of space. It’s too much—it’s too much of a reminder.

A rock—a fucking rock—fell from the sky fifty thousand years ago and even now, this land is unusable. The Colorado River pushed through the ground for so long that it wore away at the very earth.

Random chance versus persistence. Two opposite ends of a spectrum with the same result—nothing where there used to be something. The world, reshaped.

There’s nothing we can do, is there? To ensure that we carve the path that we want or to be certain that we’re not eroding everything around us. It doesn’t matter if we make one spontaneous decision or we work hard at something for years—the result could be exactly the same. It could be the opposite of what we were going for. There are plenty of rivers in the world that have been flowing for just as long and haven’t made that kind of impact. There are plenty of meteors that hurdle through space without creating mass destruction.

I don’t know whether to be comforted or disappointed by that. I told you I left my mark on this world already and that I wasn’t sure if I liked what shape it took and that’s true—but maybe there was nothing I could’ve done to make it different. After all, I haven’t had the power of a strong current or a burning meteor.

I guess I should just be grateful that the impression I left wasn’t a mile wide. I left my mark, but it won’t still be visible in fifty thousand years. It didn’t change the curve of the world.

Synopsis: Breaking into teams to play the marble game again (still don't know why it's called marble...) due to rain keeping them from adventuring around London. With Ramen and Kimchi at stake for the winners, our tour-beleaguered members are up for a fierce competition!

Production: As repetitive as the marble games are, they're definitely a solid backup. the crew does a great job of making the boards each time. 

Endearment: I'm not sure if it's just their overall energy this day, the nature of the minigames or the competition for ramen but the guys are so much more engaged this episode than they were the last two. it's just feels like we're hanging out playing a silly board game together.
