July was a busy month!!!
We did not get to take any golf trips in July because we were busy with family, some from as far away as Scotland. It was a fun month of travel to Virginia Beach and the Detroit area for me plus family in town the week of the 4th.
A college friend of my kids got married during the pandemic (courthouse wedding) and was holding a reception downstate. This started a snowball effect of everyone heading up north to “come home”. One of my kids did a semester of college in Scotland and made 2 very good friends while there. Johnny still lives in Scotland and Dom (formerly of Germany) now lives in the U.S. (he has dual citizenship). The Scottish lad was a frequent visitor pre pandemic. Chris, the groom is a Coastie pilot stationed on the west coast. 2 of my kids live out of the area, one in Virginia Beach and the other downstate. It was a wonderful homecoming!
All of these young men are either my sons by blood or by love, I consider all of them “mine” and I adore each of them. I was excited to have everyone in my home together again. It has been about 8 years since they were all here at the same time and I swear nothing has changed. The week felt like they never left.
Back to Golf
The last couple months leading up to this week there was a lot of trash talking going on with the boys. Between one having fitted clubs and lessons and another having a membership and playing daily they had been throwing insults and challenges for a while. Then there were a few that play when they can but are not as obnoxious about their skill level. Add in Johnny who because he is from Scotland it is presumed that he is a scratch golfer (he is not, but he is good). There was going to be a couple of epic golf rounds in northern Michigan that week!
Between car drives and flights, the first full day everyone was here was Monday the 4th and that seemed as good of a day as any for the first round. Get a feel of how good everyone has gotten since the last time and before the final betting amounts were agreed upon.
Pinecroft Golf Course
I made an early morning tee time for 4 of them at Pinecroft out in Beulah. I have golfed there a few times and I wanted to give the boys some time to together since I knew they had not seen Johnny since December of 2019 so I stayed behind.
Plus, someone (me) had to watch the grandkids so that the non-golfers that have not seen each other in a while could spend time together as well.
I requested pictures and was curious for their opinions on this course. I like it, but everyone seems to assume that since it is off the beaten path that it will not be worth the drive, them included. When I told them where I made the tee time, there was a little push back, but I made them give it a chance. I was sure they would not be disappointed.
They returned back to the house obviously having had fun. No matter how old, how many years since the last round, the competition is real and fierce. I was cracking up at the excuses for bad drives, putts, etc. Nothing has changed with these guys.
Verdict about Pinecroft Golf Course
All came back saying I was right it was a nice course, and they had a lot of fun. The views of Crystal Lake were as good as I promised.
I was interested in what Johnny would think of our courses since his people invented the game. Scottish courses are highly regarded and the Scottish courses in northern Michigan all have high reviews. I was interested to see what a real Scott thought of golf in northern Michigan on a non links course.
He said that he liked that there were some elevated tees that in his case helped his drive. Whether it helped the others depends on who you ask. He also said that the fairways were wide enough that the trees he typically puts up with in northern Michigan were not a factor. He has complained in the past that our tree lined fairways were tight and unforgiving.
The doglegs he was not a fan of (never has been), because his strength is his powerful long drives. Sharp doglegs mean lost balls for someone unfamiliar with the strategy of driving on a dogleg. Sounds like those holes the others showed him up on.
Lastly, he said the price was great! They paid less than $50 for 18 holes with a cart, cheap compared to back home.
Pinecroft Golf Course 2020, 2021 & 2022
My thoughts on Pinecroft
As I said earlier, I like Pinecroft. It is a family-owned course and the sister of Champion Hill that we talked about earlier in the season. The staff is great and friendly. It is a fun course to play for all levels with magnificent views and reasonable rates.
Pinecroft was a former fruit and Christmas tree farm. The course was built in 1993 by the family and that is part of its charm. This is not a big name designed course, yet it is challenging enough for everyone. Pinecroft is one of the gems in northern Michigan that you should try when you are in the area. A course that is what you would expect golfing up north.
THE BET
If there was not so much happening that week, we would have loved to golf every day. Some of us still had to work, we had little ones that wanted to hit the beaches and festivals. We were on tight schedules making sure everyone had fun.
BUT, there was still “The Bet” between 2 of them that I had been hearing about for a couple of weeks. There was a lot at stake here, bragging rights, ability to face family, egos potentially destroyed and a fair amount of cash. LOL I was not going to miss that.
I scheduled 7:45 and 8am tee times at Elmbrook Golf Course for Wednesday for 7 of us. Oh, if only a responsible adult had used some common sense when calling for tee times. (hehe!!) This was the day after the adult children planned to attend the Nelly concert and have some fun. The Grands (toddlers and teens) were either left with us old folks or left to fend for themselves. I offered to provide transportation as well so that all could have a good time.
Golfing Hungover
Without naming names, the early morning tee time at Elmbrook was a tad of a challenge for some of the golfers. All that trash talking, and big money bets went right out the window. I heard “this probably isn’t a good round to bet on.” LOL!
We let the guys be a foursome and enjoy their reunion. My husband, one of my daughters-in-law and myself were in the group ahead of them. Figured they were going to slow us down. Suggested they have a bit of the dog that bit them, but they all passed.
We ended the round, who won did not matter. It was so wonderful to be on the course with some of my kids again. My Scottish “son,” German “son”, Virginia Beach son, and local son all on a course with me. This has not happened in over 4 years. I was bummed my downstate son, as well as the groom had to leave early. But still was truly a treat to spend time with these guys.
I know this newsletter is not so much about any particular course. It is more about the friendships and comradery that golf can build. This is one of the things I love about this sport. No matter how many years, miles or pandemics keep you away, nothing changes on the course when you are back together. You cannot help but to laugh, make stupid bets and have a fun time! I hope you have enjoyed this month’s issue.
Golf Up North was at the Trojan Football Golf Outing
All three of my boys played football for the Trojans and I have continued to support them throughout the years. This is the first year we participated in the golf outing, one of my kids was looking for a twosome to add to his team, we said yes and also sponsored a hole. We played best ball and we ended the round with a 76, 4 over par, my teammates were not happy, me I was thrilled. Does this count as my finally breaking 100?

The best ways to use credit card award-night certificates in Hawaii
It’s Hawaii Week at TPG! The Hawaiian Islands have so much to offer travelers, from the sprawling city of Honolulu to quiet, black-sand beaches and restaurants serving inventive island cuisine. And it’s possible to pull off a visit to the islands using miles and points. It just takes savvy planning, and we’ll show you how. Visit TPG’s Hawaii destination hub for links to more stories about getting to the islands, staying on the islands and what to do while you’re there.
There aren’t award-travel vacation goals more popular than Hawaii. And for good reason. It’s domestic, so you don’t have to worry about passports, visas, extra taxes or international cellphone plans. It’s also magical. Think: epic sunsets, soft sand, calming waves, whales, mountains and mai tais — oh my!
With six major Hawaiian islands to choose from, there’s no shortage of activities, either. Whether you want to go sightseeing in Oahu, on an adventure in the Big Island or enjoy one of Maui’s gorgeous beaches, there’s something for every traveler on the islands.
But Hawaii is increasingly popular and can be pretty darn expensive if you aren’t strategic, especially since this isn’t usually the type of place you want to just go for the weekend. Spending at least a week in Hawaii is our recommendation, and build in more time if you want to island hop.
To keep costs under control, Hawaii is a smart place to redeem the credit card free-night awards that are burning a hole in your virtual wallet. Here are our top recommendations on where to use your hotel credit card free-night awards in Hawaii.

Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria property
(Photo courtesy of Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort.)
The Grand Wailea is a Waldorf Astoria property on Maui. This top-tier resort hotel has a water elevator, nine pools on six levels, a waterslide, waterfalls and beachfront location in upscale Wailea. The downside to this perfection-on-paper resort is the number of points (or dollars) it costs per night — it can run 95,000 Hilton points per night for a standard room. But this means that using a weekend award night from a Hilton credit card such as the Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express is a fantastic redemption.
Related: How to redeem Hilton points for a Hawaiian vacation
In case you aren’t familiar with how Hilton weekend-award-night certificates work, here are the details: Free-night certificates that you can earn on Hilton American Express cards are valid for weekend nights only, defined as Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights. You’re also restricted to standard room types (defined property by property), which may not always be available.
In addition, Hilton Amex cards award these certificates in slightly different ways.
Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express: This card has a welcome bonus of 150,000 points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of the account opening. You receive one free weekend night upon opening the card and each year after your account renewal. You also have the ability to earn a second free weekend night by spending $60,000 on the card in a calendar year. Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card: As part of the limited-time offer, you can currently earn 150,000 bonus points and a $100 credit after you spend $3,000 in purchases on the card within your first three months of card membership. This offer ends Dec. 31, 2019. Both new and existing cardholders can also earn a free-weekend-night certificate by spending $15,000 on the card in a calendar year. The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card: New cardholders can currently earn 125,000 bonus points after you spend $3,000 in purchases on the card within your first three months of card membership. Both new and existing cardholders can also earn a free-weekend-night certificate by spending $15,000 on the card in a calendar year and another certificate by spending an additional $45,000 on the card (for a total of $60,000) in that same time frame.

Westin Moana Surfrider

The Westin Moana Surfrider in Honolulu dates all the way back to 1901. A 20-minute drive from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) and right on Waikiki Beach, it features a beautiful pool, beach and spa. It’s also steps away from the main dining and shopping area, so you can easily get the best of both worlds here. Just beware: There are tourists galore.
If you can find off-peak award availability, rates at this Category 7 property start at 50,000 Marriott points a night. If you have the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant
American Express® Card, this is a stellar option for your 50,000-point award-night certificate.
Wailea Beach Resort
The Wailea Beach Resort recently completed a $100 million redesign, cementing its place as one of Maui’s premier resorts and one of our favorite ways to redeem hotel credit card award nights. A room here will cost you a 50,000-point Marriott award night certificate, available each anniversary with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant
American Express® Card during standard or off-peak nights.
The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas
Westin Princeville. (Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy.)
It’s no wonder they call Kauai the Green Jewel of Hawaii. The Westin Princeville, on the north shore of the island, is no exception to the island’s reputation for natural beauty. It’s under a 10-minute drive to Hanalei Bay, with golf courses to boot. Here, you’ll find guest villas separated into different low-rise building spread out over 18 acres of pure beach bliss.
While standard rates start at 60,000 points per night, off-peak awards are 50,000, making it another prime contender for your Marriott 50,000-point award-night certificate if the dates align. You’ll have to do some digging for dates, but it’s worth it for the views.
Bonus tip: Even if you don’t book with points, you’ll be pleased to know there’s no resort fee at this property.
Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach
(Photo courtesy of Hyatt Centric Waikiki/Hyatt.)
If you’re using World of Hyatt points in Hawaii, places such as the Grand Hyatt Kauai (25,000 points) and the Hyatt Regency Maui (25,000) are great choices, but if you’re looking to use the Category 1 to 4 award from the World of Hyatt credit card, your best bet is the Category 4 Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach that normally goes for 15,000 Hyatt points per night. The nearby Hyatt Place Waikiki is another option for redeeming your free-night award, but since it’s available for 12,000 points per night, it may be better to use points there and save your award for a Category 4 property.
Better yet, you can actually earn two annual free-night certificates, thanks to the World of Hyatt card: one with your account anniversary and another after spending $15,000 on the card in a year.
The Hyatt Centric itself overlooks beautiful Diamond Head Island in the heart of Waikiki. You’ll have to walk a bit to the beach, but that might not be a huge downside for some.
Sheraton Kauai Resort
Sheraton Kauai. (Photo courtesy of the hotel.)
Some would argue that Kauai is the most visually stunning of all the Hawaiian Islands, and it’s certainly an island you don’t want to miss — especially if a free night is in the cards. The Sheraton Kauai is a Marriott Category 5 hotel, with off-peak rates starting at 30,000 points per night and standard rates clocking in at 35,000 points per night.
Translation: This is a great opportunity to use your Marriott 35,000-point award night on standard or off-peak nights.
The best part? It’s pretty easy to rack up Marriott 35,000-point awards from cards such as the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless credit card and Marriott Bonvoy Business
American Express® Card, since they’re awarded at each account anniversary, too.
Holiday Inn Waikiki and Kailua-Kona
Though IHG doesn’t have a large footprint in Hawaii, budget travelers will be happy to know the chain has Holiday Inn Express properties in both Waikiki and Kailua-Kona.
If you hold the IHG Rewards Club Premier credit card, you receive an annual anniversary night certificate worth up to 40,000 points. Luckily for you, both of the aforementioned properties fit into this description. Room rates at each property go for 40,000 points per night, making them both within range. A night in paradise for free is always a win in our book.
Feeling inspired and ready to book your flights? Your best option might be to fly to paradise in a lie-flat seat for 40,000 miles on Hawaiian Airlines. Or you could just grab a cheap round-trip ticket on Southwest out of California. Plus, if you go that route and have the airline’s coveted companion pass, you’ll get a year’s worth of buy one, get one free flights for your favorite travel buddy.
You’ll be on the beach drinking a mai tai before you know it.

Oh boy
My friend from the comedy club attended Shabbat tonight. Apparently after she spoke with me he said something else to her, (paraphrase) ‘I haven’t felt this way in a long time of finding someone cute and funny.’
Either way, damn, I made one heck of an impression.
I also learned from my friend that he is as serious as it sounds, because she joked that if things go well the shul-war will be epic as he doesn’t like our rabbi. I joked that many folk have dual shul memberships. :P He is apparently also cousins with another person at (my) shul, L. I told her that things need to move forward and get her out of the middle of things. :P
Of course, since L was there that night and already hitting the scotch, I took a chance and mentioned something to him. It helped that L and another person mentioned how nice I looked, and when I said I hoped someone would be there they mimed being sad it wasn’t for them. I used that as a segue to mention that L knew whom I was speaking of - and damn if he didn’t figure out the right person on the first guess. From L I learned that Colby (I’ve decided that is his nickname here) has 3 brothers, and, his parents live on a private island that is a golf course community in a famous-for-being-expensive tourist area. L said he would jokingly mention me to Colby to see if it triggers him to ask for my number, which L has. That was after I told him not to say something more overt and let nature take its course.
My thoughts driving home were:
- Oh shit, his family is rich. I am not able to fit into that world.
- Oh boy, that is a big family. How big a family does he want to have? OW.
#is this dating yet?#not even exchanged contact info yet#everyone already has us married in their mind#I admit to HOPING it will go well#at least until I got scared off by their bank account#Bashert?#jewish dating#dating Colby

Monsters of the Cart Paths
It’s simply earlier than 8 a.m. on a Friday morning in early June, and a gaggle of 12 cyclists, many with extra wrinkles and crows ft than hair, assembles in a central Texas car parking zone. The lot has slots for automobiles and golf carts.
“Hey! Hey!” yells 67-year-old Phil Durham to his fellow riders as I fumble to seize the smartphone out of my jersey pocket. I need a group shot, and the gathering of cyclists, most of them round Durham’s age and belonging to the Sun City Texas Cyclists club, resist breaking off their pre-ride chitchat. Durham, a retired credit score underwriter however solely a semi-retired street racer, waves his arms. Conversations about epic crashes and helmet manufacturers stall as membership members begin shuffling themselves and their street bikes into the beginnings of a cluster.
“Andrew’s thinking of doing an article on an old-age home like the one we’re in,” Durham publicizes. “And how we’re not all so old and ancient.”
The Masters Athlete
Who says the younger weapons get to have all of the enjoyable? In this column, we inform the tales of athletes dwelling full, match, high-performance lives—and for whom age is actually only a quantity.
Read all the stories→
As I attempt to match every of the fogeyish street warriors into 1 shot, the myth-busting certainly begins. Turns out that you simply shouldn’t decide an athlete by his age, or the cart-path neighborhood wherein he lives.
I’m 35 miles north of my dwelling in Austin, Texas, within the sprawling deliberate neighborhood of Sun City Texas. Sun City, like most of the rising variety of these tidy and swept developments throughout the nation, shouldn’t be an old-age dwelling, or some clichéd retirement neighborhood. Instead these generally huge villages are constructed particularly for “55-plus” or “active-adult” dwelling: the age-restricted amenities cater tightly to a sweet-spot demographic, with no bothersome youngsters, teen drivers, or frantic soccer mothers. Yet no resident is compromised to the purpose of needing dwelling help.
Hanging with the youngish older crowd has by no means been extra in vogue. Fifty-five-plus communities began round 1960, however because of getting old Baby Boomers, in addition to new group-think that asserts health is the fountain of youth, 55-plus communities have swelled, making up an increasing share of the $66-billion retirement-community trade. Fifty-five-plus-living even made headlines final spring in publications like Forbes and Rolling Stone. The huge information: Construction has begun on 2 formidable, Jimmy Buffett-backed, active-adult communities. “Latitude Margaritaville,” full with a signature partying environment, will quickly open in each Daytona Beach, Florida, and Hilton Head, South Carolina. The new digs will, in accordance with the International Council on Active Aging (and as of 2014), add to the estimated 2.7 million U.S. households already designated for 55-plus dwelling. “About 10,000 people a day in the United States are now turning 65,” says Danny Goodman, the chief working officer of 55places.com, a home-listing web site centered on the lively grownup market. “That trend will continue for the next 13 years.”
More and extra of the folks populating these communities are, athletically talking, fairly badass. They’re match and fit-minded; dismissive of canasta or bingo; and much more prone to hike, run, paddleboard, kayak, and follow yoga. There’s additionally a brand new sport that’s all the craze in 55-plus communities: pickleball, a detuned model of tennis (smaller courtroom; paddles as an alternative of rackets; no overhead serve), with its personal nationwide affiliation and championships aired on community TV. “We’re not anti-golf. But folks are migrating away from that,” says William Bullock, a senior vice-president at Minto U.S., one of many main 55-plus neighborhood builders.
A 2016 survey carried out by 55locations.com indicated that 67 p.c of respondents stated a health middle was the highest precedence for an active-adult improvement. Tennis courts acquired 2 simply p.c of the vote.
Then there’s biking. At Sun City Texas, 1 57-year-old member of the 160-rider membership places 10,000 or extra miles on her bike yearly. Another has crisscrossed the nation by bike a number of occasions. Earlier within the decade, Durham was one of many state’s greatest 60-plus racers.
With the Texas morning solar intensifying and the trip now formally late to begin, Durham once more tries to return to my rescue. Watching me battle whereas making an attempt to squeeze everybody into 1 photograph, he barks at his frisky club-mates as soon as extra.
“Hey! Hey!” he says. This time everybody seems to be on the digicam, and smiles. “Now suck it in, guys!”
We trip, heading out on the quiet and seamless road of Cool Spring Way, with a golf course and near-perfect houses lining the route out of the 5,200-acre, 7,500-home improvement. It’s simple to know how such a path of little resistance would possibly induce folks emigrate to such a spot.
“The easy group-ride does 20 miles on the reservation,” says 74-year-old Mark Geppert as we pedal previous the umpteenth Sun City resident’s golf cart. Some of the golf carts round listed here are used as on a regular basis autos, they usually’re often custom-made, with bespoke paint, wheels, and tires. The carbon-fiber gear beneath Sun City cyclists could be equally blingy.
“Those club members doing the 20 go round-and-round here seven days a week,” Geppert provides with a shrug. Today, we’re taking a really completely different 50-mile loop, which extends nicely past the neighborhood earlier than returning for one thing of a victory lap.
Folks like Geppert migrate to active-adult communities for a wide range of causes. Some transfer as a result of many 55-plus developments are protected retreats situated close to main metros. Others come for the social scene, with loosened beer caps and peppy nightlife. People just like the enterprise facilities and convention rooms (many in active-adult communities nonetheless work), the gyms that host wellness consultants, the strolling paths lined with train stations, the spotless streets, and the limitless golf equipment and camaraderie.
Some, just like the Sun City Cyclists, just like the using. The biking membership began again in 2001. The members, a few of whom trip 5 or six days per week and know a whole lot of the less-trafficked pavement in and round Williamson County, spend their days exploring backroads to spots like Salado and Lake Buchanan.
“We know it’s healthy and fun, and that’s the combination that draws most of us out,” says Bill McMillin, as a pickup truck swings extensive across the group. McMillin is a retired CPA who, on this muggy day, is carrying particular, white arm covers which can be designed to work like sunblock.
“It’s a big part of our social lives,” provides Ted Koziell, who’s been using for over 4 many years, and has traversed the U.S., Canada, and, most lately, the Netherlands by bike. “Everyone just bullshits.”
Soon just a few of us line up behind an accelerating John Heckeroth, a semi-retired IBM advertising and marketing supervisor who lives simply exterior of Sun City however whom all of the membership members appear to know. They welcome Heckeroth, who’s often called Too Strong John. We race to the Andice metropolis limits signal. The peloton disintegrates.
A pair laborious efforts later, Phil Durham pulls up alongside me, barely out of breath however smiling. “My brain wrote the check,” Durham says as we crest an increase. “But the body couldn’t cash it.”
Quiet roads, sunny skies, all day to trip and yuk it up together with your friends, and a pleasant bike beneath you. The solely factor lacking, maybe, is a little bit youth.
About 35 miles into our trip, we make a retailer cease at a deluxe Valero in Florence. The cyclists all sit down with sizzling espresso and contemporary breakfast tacos contained in the fuel station’s oversize comfort retailer. The wisecracking instantly begins.
“Around Christmas we have a little club party, and hand out trophies to the people that make their goal for the year,” explains 69-year-old Howard Hammerbeck, who’s nursing a bottle of Gatorade. “Everyone self-reports. One guy did close to 12,000 miles.”
“Howard rode 85,000 in 2016,” says Geppert with a crooked grin from behind his wraparound shades. “Self-reported.”
But the jokes, the electrolytes, and the sausage and egg tacos aren’t the largest gasoline supply for these dudes. They keep younger as a result of they’ll nonetheless get on their bikes. One by 1, the tales come out about bodily setbacks which were offset by biking. Geppert can’t jog due to arthritis. Koziell has AFib, or atrial fibrillation, which is a doubtlessly debilitating coronary heart situation. Tom Crawford was a runner, till he obtained hit by a automotive.
“Not that cycling is always good for us,” says Geppert. “We still have people trying to bowl us over.”
Of course, a number of older Americans don’t need to swap city grit, road noise, and a close-by taco truck—or possibly a lone log cabin within the woods—for miles of empty farm street. And then there are the folks flat-out repulsed by 55-plus communities, like creator Andrew Blechman, a former reporter for the Los Angeles Times and Des Moines Register who wrote a harsh evaluation of such developments in his 2008 e book, Leisureville: Adventures in a World Without Children. Blechman’s e book analysis centered on his month spent at north-central Florida’s the Villages, which has an estimated 157,000 residents, and over 30 golf programs.
“I don’t begrudge these people. It’s hard to know where to retire in America,” he advised me in a cellphone interview days after I’d ridden with the Sun City cyclists. “But these folks aren’t old, they’re young. And they’re checking out. It’s societal secession.”
Nearly a decade after Leisureville got here out, Blechman nonetheless thinks equally. In reality, the hedonistic decisions, he says, have expanded—courtesy of the getting old populations’ rising obsession with health.
“The kidney shaped dipping pools and shuffleboard? All gone,” Blechman advised me over the cellphone. “They want to attract people who are really into being sporty. The gyms aren’t little rooms with fans. They’re like something you’d see at an Equinox.”
Goodman, the COO for 55locations.com, admits that the developments promoted by his group are allowed by legislation to limit potential residents based mostly on age and familial standing. But he says that additionally they profit a large viewers, and often in ways in which don’t have anything to do with drink blenders or treadmills. Widows and widowers, he added, appreciated these communities as a result of there are all the time of us round, and issues to do.
So yeah, active-adult communities might have their warts. They’re manicured to the purpose of seeming hermetically sealed, they usually don’t absolutely embrace kids. But the subsequent time you’re pedaling inside hanging distance of such a neighborhood, and also you go some biking geezers with helmet-mounted rearview mirrors and dorky, fuzzy, little helmet-strap attachments which can be designed to muffle wind noise, give them an attaboy or 2. Salute them for holding onto their youth.
And, maybe, put together to be handed again.
Let's block ads! (Why?)

In the Bunker with Mick the Grip
PALM DESERT’S BIGHORN Golf Club, near to posh Palm Springs, California, opened it’s new $70 million clubhouse in November. The 80,000 square ft clubhouse, with stunning views of both the Mountains and Canyons courses, has limestone floors from Peru and travertine walls from Portugal. A 16-foot cascading chandelier hangs in the bar area. Residents are accommodated in penthouses with private lifts. Amenities include 5 star restaurant, spa, pools and pickleball courts. Pickleball? Dread to think what they’ve put the membership fees up to, and reviews say the prices are eye-watering, but if you live in Palm Springs that’s probably the least of your worries. ADAM ROLSTON ended a 1250 mile journey when he finally sunk a 7ft putt on the Mt. Bogd Golf Club in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Ex-rugby internationals Adam, from Ireland, and his Australian caddie Ron Rutland, decided to play the world’s longest hole of golf (20,093 shots) from one end of Mongolia to the other. They calculated that par for the hole - across deserts, frozen rivers and swamps - would be 14,000. Rutland pulled a 100kg cart loaded with their supplies and Rolston hit the shots, around 250 per day. A wild dog accompanied them and they adopted it. Extreme rain and snow in the mountains at the start was followed by the 40 degree heat of the Gobi Desert. The pair set a world record, and raised £20,000 for charity, finishing after 80 days on Mongolia’s only golf course. Adam had lost untold golfballs and Ron narrowly avoided a sticky end when the cart fell on him in a bog. The Mongolians they met en route left off hunting and hawking to have a go at this strange game. “The worst part was putting on soaking freezing shoes in the mornings,” Adam said, “ but we had a great time.” As my old Dad used to say: “There are more out than in.” IN CASE YOU THINK Twistface and Hammerhead are two muscle-bound thugs from the latest James Bond movie, they are actually features of Taylor Made’s new M4 driver. After getting over their sulk at being beaten in sales by Calloway’s Epic, Taylor Made decided that a High Launch and Low Spin combination with ample forgiveness would be their aim, rather than distance. Twistface is used in other drivers, notably Cobra’s F8, but Taylor Made insist the M4 is even twistier. Hammerhead is just another slot, their answer to Calloway’s Jailbreak technology. The silver matte finish adds a touch of class, but Golfspy say “If you have an M2 you probably don’t need to change, although If your driver is a few years old the M4 is an impressive performer for its ‘modest’ price tag.” (£369.00). Dustin Johnson splashed out his savings on an M4 and won at Kapalua recently, so if you want to produce 433 yd drives make for your nearest golf shop. “SPAINS BEST GOLF COURSE”, Las Colinas, run by Troon International, took the title for the third consecutive year at the World Golf awards in November, adding to their titles of Spain’s and Europe’s Leading Villa Resort. Nominees in the Best Course category included La Manga’s South course, Sotogrande and Valderrama, so the competition was hot. La Manga must have been gnashing their teeth but their hotel Principe Felipe did win Best Golf Hotel so they had some consolation. RORY MCILROY’S THIRD PLACE prize money in the HSBC at Abu Dhabi will help to pay for his latest house purchase, and if his six bedroom Florida mansion sells for the asking price of $13m he will make a tidy profit, having bought it five years ago for 9.5 million. Rory and his other half are moving to Jack Nicklaus’s exclusive Bears Club, where Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler & Co. put in a spot of practice between globe-trotting. Rory’s new house formerly belonged to Ernie Els, who has relocated to nearby Old Palm Golf Club where fellow S. African Louis Oosthuizen owns a modest pad and they can reminisce over a Carling Black Label. It’s one jolly game of musical houses at the top. Until next time: Happy Golfing. These epic protesters just spoiled Trump’s desire to use this tournament as a massive marketing ploy for his golf properties.
Team Trump has made it no secret they’ve been wanting to use current PGA championship as a springboard for gaining members, and thus membership fees, for Trump golf clubs around the nation. Eric Trump, Agent Orange’s second-eldest son, has been blabbering on about it all week, as a matter of fact.
“It’s the greatest marketing in the world,” Eric told The New York Times. “All these players are his friends.”
Andrew Wood, a golf-marketing expert with decades of experience in consulting, confirms that this tournament is just one big marketing ruse for Trump. The Idiot-in-Chief wants business to be as BOOMING as possible while he’s in the Oval Office.
“This course is going to get TV time,” Wood said. “It’s going to get status. The world’s best players are going to be playing there on national television.”
Too bad for Trump that protesters with the Resistance just botched any possibility of the PGA tournament going off quietly without a hitch. That’s because DOZENS of protesters in kayaks just lined the Potomac River around Trump National Golf Club with anti-Trump signs.
These epic kayaking protesters wisely timed their efforts for maximum visibility, too. They flooded into the Potomac just as professional golfer John Daly’s fans took the course, as Daly is an avid Trump supporter, and so too, presumably are most of Daly’s fans.

Now, instead of the PGA tournament going smoothly for Trump, much of its coverage will center on the anti-Trump protesters who flocked to the event. This is more bad press for Trump, and it could ultimately cost him money in the future if event organizers look elsewhere for courses where there won’t be any presidential drama.
What’s so awesome about this story is that it shows ALL of us how we as individuals can make a difference in the fight against Trump. It’s as simple as grabbing a kayak and a sign and taking your message to the nation.
Here’s hoping that the PGA tournament dumps Trump’s courses from their championships in the future. Agent Orange should be ostracized, not supported with large, blockbuster events.
POLL: Is this protest genius?
What do you think about these protesters? Was their protest genius or what?
Please take our poll below and make YOUR voice heard. We all have a responsibility to speak out in Trump’s America.
This story should be an example for us all, there can’t be any sitting back while Trump is still in the Oval Office. He’s driving our country into the ground, so we all have a responsibility to fight back in whatever ways we can.
The good fight is always worth it. And fighting against Trump’s tyrannical regime is definitely the good fight.
Let’s make sure everyone hears about these kayaking resisters. Please share this story on Facebook ASAP.

Masters 2017: Meltdowns, lobsters, azaleas – all you need to know about Augusta
(CNN)Will Rory McIlroy complete the grand slam? Can Dustin Johnson cement his growing status as the sport's most in-form player? Can Jordan Spieth bounce back from his Masters meltdown?
Follow @cnnsport
The Masters, the first men's major of the year, is a spring-rite, a reunion of the golfing clans -- in person or on TV -- and the true beginning of the season for many.
The private Augusta National club is the iconic setting, a hilly, verdant corner of Georgia bedazzled by blooming azaleas, dogwoods and magnolias and framed by towering pines.
The hallowed turf, hidden from the concrete, neon and fast-food strip of raffish Washington Road over the fence, is the site of a former indigo plantation and then fruit nursery. That was before the great American amateur Bobby Jones and businessman Clifford Roberts built a golf course in 1933.
The inaugural Masters, then known as the Augusta National Invitational tournament, was held in 1934, since when the legend has grown.
No mobile phones, no running
The tournament has its own unique rules and rituals, governed by the Green Jackets, the all-powerful -- and wealthy -- members of this exclusive club which only admitted its first black member in 1990 and its first women in 2012.
The club exudes genteel southern hospitality but governs with an iron fist. Rules such as no running or mobiles phones are strictly enforced.
Spectators, known as "patrons," and the media alike must toe the line or face having their badge removed. And with the waiting list for badges long since closed, and a limited ballot for yearly tickets one of the only other viable avenues, the atmosphere is one of deference.

Burgers, Yorkshire puddings and lobster
Masters week follows a traditional pattern, with patrons flooding the grounds to watch Monday and Tuesday practice.
On Tuesday evening the past winners gather in the 1854-era clubhouse for the Champions Dinner, hosted by the defending champion with a menu typically selected from his homeland.
Sandy Lyle's haggis in 1989, Woods' cheeseburgers, fries and milkshakes in 1998 and Adam Scott's Moreton Bay Bugs (Australian lobster) in 2014 are some of the notable items served up. England's Danny Willett served up a traditional British roast dinner.
The tournament culminates with the defending champion presenting the winner with a green jacket -- a tradition started in 1949 -- and membership to one of sport's most exclusive groups.
READ: Spieth plots Johnson downfall at Augusta
Spieth's demons
Willett landed his first major 12 months ago after emerging from the maelstrom that engulfed Spieth on the back nine on the final day.
Spieth had led the Masters for seven straight rounds stretching back to 2015 and was set to become the first player to land back-to-back titles since Woods in 2002.
On the 10th tee, Spieth held a five-shot lead, but 40 minutes later his advantage was gone.
Spieth bogeyed the 10th and 11th and made a quadruple-bogey seven with two balls in the water at the treacherous short 12th. Willett finished strongly, and though Spieth rallied over the closing holes, he finished three shots behind in second.
The 23-year-old told reporters recently he was looking forward to this year's Masters being over so people could move on from his meltdown.
"The Masters lives on for a year," said Spieth, who claims he exorcised his demons at the 12th during a recent visit to Augusta. "It brings a non-golf audience into golf. And it will be nice once this year's finished to be brutally honest."
Johnson 'playing best golf in the world'
Spieth has finished second, first, second in his three appearances at the Masters, but he suggests fellow American Johnson is the man to beat.
World No. 1 Johnson clinched the WGC World Match Play title two weeks ago for a third straight win and goes to Augusta hoping to improve on a best finish of tied fourth last year.
The average age of a Masters winner is 32 -- Johnson is 32.
"I think that he is the guy that everyone is saying he's playing the best golf in the world right now," Spieth told reporters ahead of last week's Houston Open.
McIlroy's grand slam bid
In Woods' absence, much of the focus will be on McIlroy's bid for a career grand slam.
The world No. 2 needs the Masters to become only the sixth player complete the set of all four of golf's major titles, after Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen.
McIlroy's best finish was fourth in 2015, but he has suffered his own Augusta anguish after blowing a four-shot lead going into the final day in 2011.
Australian Jason Day, ranked three, is set to resume his quest for a first green jacket after missing the World Match Play at the end of March to be with his mother who has cancer.
Meanwhile, Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, who has climbed to a career-high world No. 4, is bidding to become the first Asian-born player to win the Masters. He was tied fifth in 2015.

Three-time champion Phil Mickelson can eclipse the 46-year-old Nicklaus as the oldest winner if he lands his first title since 2010.
Mickelson, who will be 47 in June, was second two years ago and fought that epic, but unsuccessful, battle against Henrik Stenson on the final day of the British Open at Royal Troon last July.
The tournament will begin Thursday tinged with sadness at the passing late last year of four-time winner Arnold Palmer.
Nicklaus and Player will conduct the ceremonial opening drives without their partner from golf's so-called "Big Three" of yesteryear.

20 things you may have forgotten from Tiger Woods’ iconic 1997 Masters win
The most dominant Masters win in history launched a new world for golf. Here are 20 facts, photos, and quotes on the 20th anniversary of Tiger’s first major.
I was in elementary school when Tiger Woods won the Masters in 1997. It was the moment I became hooked on golf. Tiger was a bad ass, which was a weird thing to say about a golfer when you’re a young kid. He was just as cool as other sports heroes like Tory Aikman and Emmitt Smith. He had a style that I didn’t think was allowed in golf. As a result of those four days in Augusta in 1997, I’ve played the game ever since. Each day I become more and more addicted to it and that’s all due to that first Masters win for Tiger. And if you ask many of the guys on Tour today, they will tell a similar story.
It has been 20 (!) years since Tiger took over the golf world. In honor of that anniversary, here are 20 moments, facts, photos and miscellany you may not remember from the 1997 Masters.
1. Tiger was a skinny dude
In the past few years, it has become fashionable to criticize Tiger for bulking up too much. Sure he’s ripped now, but that’s not the point. Back in 1997, Tiger looked like he was 155 pounds. He still blasted it some 23 yards, on average, farther than the second longest hitter in the field. His power was derived from unbelievable club head speed and it wasn’t because he was working out like a madman.

Tiger follows through in the final round of the 1997 Masters.
2. Opening Nine 40
It’s hard to believe this even happened. We all know that Tiger blitzed the field at the 1997 Masters, but many forget that Big Cat’s historic win got off to an awful start that threatened to end his week two days early with a missed cut. Bogeys on Nos. 1, 4, 8, and 9 led to a front nine 40 for Woods. After only nine holes, it was hard to believe we were witnessing anything historic.
As Rick Reilly noted, however, “something happened to him as he walked to the 10th tee, something that separates him from other humans. He fixed his swing, right there, in his mind.”
3. Back Nine 30
After that front nine 40 on Thursday, a switch flipped. Tiger birdied four of his final nine holes and added an eagle en route to a back nine 30. It was a signal to the world that the Tiger era was going to be different. His overwhelming length and pinpoint short iron play was a sign of things to come. He made the once intimidating Augusta National into a pristine pitch and putt. He never looked back.
4. Fuzzy Zoeller
Not everything was positive during that week in 1997. There were several negative stories to come out of Augusta, most notably the comments made by Fuzzy Zoeller. When asked about Tiger, Zoeller made his infamous comments about next year’s Champions Dinner. Eventually the two would reconcile, but it was a bad, bad, bad look that will forever be attached to Zoeller.
youtube
5. A win at the club of Clifford Roberts
Fuzzy’s comments may have been out of line and a stupid mistake, but the truth is, Augusta National wasn’t exactly the friendliest place for minorities. The club’s co-founder Clifford Roberts was known for saying, “As long as I'm alive, golfers will be white, and caddies will be black.”
Woods winning the 1997 Masters had far-reaching consequences and carried incredible weight happening at a club with such history. African Americans and women are now members at Augusta National. It’s likely the success of Tiger Woods contributed to making the membership of the club more diverse.
6. 37 bogey-free holes
During the second round, on the third hole, Tiger made a bogey. He wouldn’t make another one until the fifth hole during the final round. That’s 37 holes of bogey-free golf on the vaunted Augusta National layout. During that stretch, Tiger pulled away from the field by playing those holes in a remarkable 14-under par. It was ova.
7. The Tiger Swagger becomes a thing
We knew early on that Tiger was going to be a different golfer. The crowds from the very beginning were unreal. But Tiger was different in the way he carried himself on the golf course. Remember the Phoenix Open where he raised the roof all the way down the fairway? That was just a precursor to the signature Tiger swagger that would be a staple of his career. At the ’97 Masters, the Big Cat’s signature fist pump was on full display, along with club twirls, pimp steps, and thousand-yard stares.
It’s possible these moves might have been inspired by the Golden Bear. According to his recent book, Woods, who was 10 at the time, recalled seeing Jack Nicklaus celebrate before the ball was in the hole at the 1986 Masters and the memory resonated.
All week long, Woods would uppercut the sky in a way that traditionally reserved golfers never did. He would club twirl. He picked up his tee before the ball hit the ground. He would start stalking after great shots. He walked in putts. He was becoming a star.
youtube
8. MONTY!
Always one for a sound byte, Colin Montgomerie provided one of the best during the 1997 Masters. Referring to Greg Norman’s 1996 collapse, Monty dropped this gem.
“There is no chance humanly possible that Tiger is just going to lose this tournament. This is different. This is very different. (Nick) Faldo is not lying second for a start, and Greg Norman is not Tiger Woods.”
Did not know of the Stankowski quote, but I'll always remember Monty http://pic.twitter.com/OLg8QtSEi3

9. Tiger played Mortal Kombat
Maybe one of the lesser-known anecdotes to come out of that week at Augusta was Tiger’s love of playing video games. You may know Tiger is a big ‘Call of Duty’ guy, but back then it was ‘Mortal Kombat.’
According to Reilly’s aforementioned game story, after play was done for the day and while the who’s who of the sports world were sent positive notes, Tiger was busy playing ping pong and video games. According to the story, Tiger (as Motaro) enjoyed ripping his buddy Jerry Chang’s (as Kintaro) head off.
10. Finishing in style
Most golfers with a large cushion will play a conservative game in order to secure victory. Tiger either didn’t do that or he was just so good at the time, he didn’t need to. Either way, his back nine on Sunday put an exclamation point on his historic win. He made birdies on 11, 13, and 14. The gas pedal was down and it wouldn’t let up until Nick Faldo slipped that green jacket over his shoulders.
11. Tiger almost missed setting the scoring record
Tiger was set on cruise control coming to the 18th hole. He wasn’t going to lose, but he wanted to best Jack Nicklaus for the all-time Masters scoring record. On the 18th tee someone shouted during Big Cat’s swing and he pulled his tee shot way left.
But, come on, this was Tiger’s week. He found his ball in an advantageous spot. He put his second shot on the green and two-putted his way to the best score in Masters history.
12. “A win for the ages”
We often joke about Jim Nantz’s love for extended family trees and clever puns at the end of golf tournaments, but this line was one of his best. As Tiger Woods drained his putt on the 72nd hole, Nantz called the monumental victory a “win for the ages.”
It remains one of the most memorable calls from years of Masters highlights, but it also signaled a new era in the golf world. Yes, that win by Tiger may be the most impressive in the tournament’s history, but it also put golf in a new place in the sports landscape. In the coming years, TV ratings soared. Purses skyrocketed to a level never thought possible. And maybe most importantly, golf was seen as cool for a change. It was indeed a win for the ages. The moment Nantz uttered that line serves as a clear line of demarcation in the game’s history.
13. Earl and Tiger embrace
If you have followed Tiger at all in the past 20 years, you will know the impact that his father had on his life. Earl Woods taught his son the game and instilled a mental toughness in his son that would make him one of the best to ever play the game. When Tiger won in ’97 he found his father beside the 18th green and their embrace is one of the unforgettable images from that week.

14. 270
Tiger blew away the field in 1997. But you knew that. His score of 270 or 18-under par was the tournament record and he also won by TWELVE shots. That major championship record stood for a few years until Cat won the U.S. Open in 2000 by an even more absurd 15 shots.
15. 21
Tiger became the youngest winner of the Masters at age 21. Winning the Masters is an impressive feat no matter a player’s age, but the fact that Tiger was doing it at this age and in an era when young talents did not make waves like this put the rest of the golfing world on notice.
16. 43 Million Viewers
Tiger emerged as a transcendent star of the game and that was reflected in the TV ratings. A record 43 million viewers tuned into to watch the coronation of golf’s new superstar. This still remains the high point for CBS’s coverage of the event. The final round of the ’97 Masters also remains the highest rated final round and major championship of all time. If anyone asks you why Tiger is so important to the game of golf, point to these numbers.
17. Tiger played a different game from the tee
You know that Tiger beat the crap out of everyone in ’97, but how did he do it? He overpowered Augusta National. That week, Cat averaged over 320 off the tee. He smoked every other player in the field by 25 yards. That advantage allowed him to beat up Augusta in a way that was never seen before. This was especially evident on the par-5s where Woods was a crazy 13-under par and often playing a short iron or wedge into the green. His fellow pros could simply not keep up.
18. The impetus to “Tiger Proofing”
Tiger rewrote the book on how to play Augusta National. He dominated the course in a way that that the green jackets had not seen. So the club eventually lengthened the course in an overhaul that was dubbed “Tiger-proofing.” Sure, this didn’t happen until a few years later, but you better believe the talk of changes started in 1997. This one win forever changed the setup of the National.
19. Cheeseburgers, fries, and milkshakes
One of the great traditions of the Masters is the Champions Dinner the following year. After his historic win, Tiger was entitled to pick the menu for the dinner in 1998. Being that he was still a kid, Tiger went with what he ate at home: burgers, fries, and milkshakes. It was a huge hit with the other past champions, including Byron Nelson who remarked, “I’m glad you ordered cheeseburgers, Tiger, because I don’t get this at home.”
20. The New Master
After his historic win, Tiger took over the cover of Sports Illustrated. The headline read “The New Master.” We often rush to proclaim something the new “era” after a super talent wins only to see that era never get off the ground. But this was foreshadowing for the man that would rule the game for the next decade and then some.
