Epel Facts Part 6: Cute

Epel is often being called cute by characters who don’t seem to realize he doesn’t consider it a compliment: When he complains about the cuteness of his outfit in Glorious Masquerade Deuce follows with, “it totally is cute!,” and when Jade calls his outfit cute during the Harveston event, Epel is not pleased.

Floyd may be only character to say he does not get a “cute” vibe from Epel: he gifts Epel with a watch for his birthday, saying that he looks cool.

Epel is shocked, saying that most people tell him he looks cute and Floyd responds, “I don’t get that vibe from you at all.”Jack seems to commiserate with Epel, saying “‘cute’ and ‘cammable’ aren’t really in our wheelhouse” during Port Fest and Epel agrees, saying, “We could do ‘cool’ and ‘strong’, though.”

Epel’s tsum attacks Crowley when he calls it “darling” and Epel explains, “It tries to tackle anyone who calls it that.”

Epel joins the Culinary Crucible with the goal of learning "a good food that'll make you grow tall and put meat on your bones," saying that he wants to become "bigger and bulkier" and and will do his best to bulk up his muscles.

Epel breaks down during Book 5 over how he doesn’t want to be cute: “I don’t wanna be some dainty little flower. I wanna be BIG! And STRONG! And TOUGH!” This comes up very often with Epel throughout the game: his wish for the Wish Upon a Star event is to become taller, as, “I’ve always thought big, brawny guys were cool,” describing Jack as his ideal.

Epel gets protein powder from Jack for his birthday, saying, “If I drink this, maybe my height and muscles will…!”

Epel says that he would also wish to get taller from a wishing well, if he could, and asks Vil if he could become “a towering pile of muscles” like Vargas if he drank a disguise potion.

Epel’s motivation behind enrolling in the Master Chef course is to gain muscle and height by learning about nutritional balances.

Epel wonders at how Idia was able to become so tall despite being such a picky eater, which seems to be at odds with his Grandmother’s insistence that picky eaters can’t grow big.

He says, “I bet I’d look like a powerful mage if only I was a little taller.”Epel says he hopes to grow taller at the school and, “Once I’m all grown up, I’ll be big and tall and strong enough to protect the one I love…I hope?”

Epel will often mention coming to NRC to get stronger (“I came all this way to Night Raven College to become a cool, strong mage.”), saying that he wishes he could bulk up like Vargas, but he likes magic since you don’t have to be big and strong to be good at it.

Epel will occasionally comment on how he doesn’t think certain things are as “manly” as he believes they ought to be, like Lilia’s fighting techniques and a misunderstanding with bullies (a bad habit that Vil is trying to break him of).
