Our most complete performance so far: Eoin Morgan | Cricket News
ABU DHABI: Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Eoin Morgan on Saturday said his team produced its most complete performance of the season so far when it upstaged the fancied Delhi Capitals by 59 runs to stay alive in the IPL here. Having suffered a massive defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore after putting up 84/8 in their last outing, KKR were not given much of a chance against the high-flying Delhi Capitals. But Nitish Rana and Sunil Narine stepped up in style to lift them to 194/6 and then Varun Chakravarthy‘s five-wicket haul (5/20) along with Pat Cummins‘ three-wicket effort choked DC, who are sitting pretty on second in the points table. Check full IPL league stage schedule | Points Table “I think the timing of this couldn’t be any better. Playing against a side who are second coming towards the business end of the tournament, two points is huge,” Morgan said in the post-match press conference. “We had the most complete performance as a group in this tournament so far. Until today, we feel as if we hadn’t played our best cricket. Today I think it was close to that,” he added. It was Narine (64) and Rana (81) who set it up for KKR in a 115-run partnership from 56 balls. Playing his first match after being cleared of a suspect bowling action, Narine batted at five and fired on all cylinders in his 32-ball 64. “…I think that rubbed off on Nitish Rana as well. Watching them play with the freedom that they did was outstanding.” “Sunil has been an integral part of this franchise for a number of years now. His ability as an all-rounder is key in our team. “To have him back and come in and perform not only with the ball but with the bat, I think is outstanding. He has just proved how valuable he is to the team.” Promotion to open the innings also worked for left-handed Rana, who shrugged off his poor scores of 9, 2, 9, 5, 29 and 0 in his last six innings to slam 81 from 53 balls. “This now can be the start of his campaign taking things forward. Today, against one of the best bowling lineups in the tournament, he played absolutely outstanding,” Morgan said all praise for Rana. He also spoke very highly of mystery spinner Chakravarthy who returned with the first five-wicket haul of this season. “He has gelled really well in the team. I think he’s been one of the positive stories out of our campaign so far,” he said of the man who has been their leading wicket-taker this season with 12 from 10 matches. DC had two well-set batsmen in Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant at the crease when Chakravarthy was pressed into the attack with the opposition needing 131 from 60 balls. A win would have virtually sealed a play-off spot for DC but they suffered a second straight loss. Their star pacer Kagiso Rabada rejected criticism that the team was being complacent. “That’s the nature of the tournament, it’s quality versus quality. Any team can rock up on their day. I guess we just need to analyse a few points where we let the game slip away. “I don’t think it’s a big area that we need to focus on. We back ourselves all the time. I don’t think we need to worry too much. It’s just a little bit of a concern,” he said. “It can happen to any team, it wasn’t our day. I don’t think we got into the game being complacent. You cannot just take the foot of the gas. These things happen,” he added. Iyer’s captaincy looked baffling as he did not bring Rabada in when Rana and Narine were firing. “Myself and Nortje had bowled two overs already. We back all the bowlers in our team to get wickets and stop runs,” Rabada said, defending his captain. “We have a quality bowling lineup. We pride ourselves on that. And today I guess it just didn’t happen.

IPL 2020: Tom Banton may need to wait for Kolkata Knight Riders chance
[ad_1]
With the likes of star all-rounder Andre Russell, big-money recruit Pat Cummins, mystery spinner Sunil Narine and England captain Eoin Morgan slated to take the overseas slots, Banton may need to wait for his chance. But, McCullum was full of praise for the Englishman, who made his international entry in 2019.
“He (Banton) probably won’t start for us in this campaign because we will go…

It was a late call to ask Siraj to open the bowling: Virat Kohli | Cricket News

It was a late call to ask Siraj to open the bowling: Virat Kohli | Cricket News
ABU DHABI: Mohammed Siraj‘s furious spell upfront tore apart the Kolkata Knight Riders‘ batting line up but RCB skipper Virat Kohli revealed that the seamer initially did not figure in their plans for opening the attack. Siraj, who replaced Shahbaz Ahmed in RCB’s playing XI on Wednesday, took three wickets in rare two wicket-maiden overs to decisively turn the match in his team’s favour. IPL 2020 League Stage Schedule | Points Table He returned astonishing figures of 4-2-8-3 and was an easy choice for Man-of-the-match award. “It was a late call to be honest (to give Siraj the new ball). It was a good toss to lose because we would have batted first. The plan was to bowl Washy (Washington Sundar) and Morry (Chris Morris), but then we thought let’s go Morris and Siraj,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
“Last year Siraj had a tough year and a lot of people went hard at him. This year he has worked hard and was bowling well in the nets. He has seen the results now but we want him to keep following the process,” he said further praising his fast bowler. Sirah himself said that his hard work paid off. “Thanks to Virat for giving me the new ball. I have been practising a lot with the new ball. We hadn’t planned that I will open but when we went out, Virat bhai asked me to be ready,” he said. Siraj was extremely pleased that his strategy to dismiss Nitish Rana worked. “The ball to Rana was very good. Executed exactly what I had planned,” he said referring to the deceptive field set up that trapped the batsman. RCB have been much-improved and dominant this season and the India skipper credited it to a new “culture” in the side. “The management has set in a culture where there is proper planning. It is not random. We have a Plan A,we have a Plan B, we have a Plan C. We are here to execute the plans we have in place. We did a few things at the auction too, which is paying off. “You can have all the plans, but you have to have belief. Morry is living the responsibility. He is the guy who likes to take the leadership role. His energy is amazing. He can contribute with the bat, ball and in the field.” KKR skipper Eoin Morgan said they did not put up much resistance and that was “disappointing”. “RCB bowled well, but we should have countered that better. And with that dew, we probably should have bowled first.” Morgan also hoped that Andre Russell and Sunil Narine” will be fit and available around the corner”. “Two guys of that calibre, particularly when they are all-rounders, is a big hole. Hopefully they will be available down the line.”

Lockie Ferguson: From bench warmer to star performer in his first match of IPL 2020 | Cricket News

Lockie Ferguson: From bench warmer to star performer in his first match of IPL 2020 | Cricket News
NEW DELHI: New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson was the star of the show in the epic Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Sunrisers Hyderabad clash that the Eoin Morgan-led side won via a Super Over on Sunday. Returning figures of 3/15 in the game and then bowling a brilliant Super Over — that included 2 wickets and restricting SRH to just 2 runs — Lockie was just sensational in his first game of IPL 2020. But in the first half of the tournament, surprisingly Lockie didn’t make it to the playing XI. With just four foreigners allowed and the likes of Eoin Morgan, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and the most expensive buy of the season Pat Cummins in the KKR XI, it took Lockie more than half of the tournament to make his way onto the field.
Many feel Lockie should have been tried out much earlier, since he bowls at good pace, has a good yorker and great slow variations. Pace bowlers remember have been a big factor as far as team success is concerned this season. Delhi Capitals have been benefitting from the in roads their pace duo Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje provide. Mumbai Indians have also been consistently at the top of the table thanks largely to their fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, James Pattinson and now Nathan Coulter-Nile.
Lockie also showed how his skiddy pace can a terrific asset for KKR in his first match of the season as he single-handedly swung the game in favour of KKR against SRH. One has to wonder if Lockie perhaps should have been given a chance, maybe even in place of Pat Cummins who has been well below par this season. After the match, Lockie explained how he had been regularly training but was nervous and at the same time also comfortable bowling even after not being part of the XI for so long.
“I have been training quite a lot. Feel pretty comfortable while bowling. But obviously had not played for a while so was pretty nervous. Just one of the days when you express yourself and happy how it worked. I tried to keep it pretty simple what I was doing throughout the game. I backed my yorker, backed my slower ball and fortunately got those wickets which was actually nice at that stage,” Lockie said in a chat with Shubman Gill after the match. In the Super Over, Lockie restricted SRH to just 2, making the equation for KKR pretty easy. Talking about it Lockie said that the likes of skipper Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik have a calm mind that allowed him to execute his plans in the high-pressure Super Over. “It’s nice to have guys like Morgs and DK around you who are very calm heads to talk through the plans. I came to Morgs with my plan which was not similar to what was in the game and then stuck to it and it is always nice to get a wicket first-ball, relieves a little bit of stress, restricted them to 2 and gave us an opportunity to win,” Lockie said. Performing in a crunch game after coming in straightaway at the half-way stage of the tournament also helped Lockie garner praise from all around.
Like they would a diamond, @KKRiders kept #LockieFerguson in a safe and only displayed him on the big day!

Lockie isn’t so low key at all. #lockieferguson

Similar to Lockie, there are several other high profile players in different franchises that have still not managed a game this season. Imran Tahir (Chennai Super Kings) – The highest wicket-taker in the 2019 edition of the IPL (26) is yet to play his first match for Chennai this season. Mitchell Santner (Chennai Super Kings) – New Zealand all-rounder Santner, who played 4 matches for Chennai last season has not been part of the CSK playing XI so far. Sandeep Lamichhane (Delhi Capitals) – 20-year-old Sandeep featured in 6 matches for Delhi in 2019 but is yet to play his first match this season. Chris Lynn (Mumbai Indians) – Coming in from Kolkata Knight Riders to MI this season, Lynn is yet to play his first match in the 2020 season for the defending champions.

KXIP skipper KL Rahul vows to return stronger after fifth straight loss | Cricket News

KXIP skipper KL Rahul vows to return stronger after fifth straight loss | Cricket News
After suffering a heart-breaking two-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, Kings XI Punjab skipper KL Rahul said he has no answers for his side’s fifth consecutive defeat and sixth overall in seven matches of the ongoing Indian Premier League. “Don’t think we were satisfied at any stage in the chase. You are satisfied only when you win the game. Towards the end, we kept losing wickets, and couldn’t get us over the line,” Rahul said after the match. IPL 2020 League Stage Schedule | Points Table Chasing a competitive 165, KXIP were on course till the 18th over before the bowlers pulled KKR back from the jaws of defeat. The chase started well with Rahul and fellow opener Mayank Agarwal matching stroke by stroke to set the tone with a 115-run stand. While Mayank perished in an attempt to up the ante after scoring a 39-ball 56, laced with six boundaries and a six, Rahul got a valiant 58-ball 74 contained six fours. Thereafter the innings derailed and KXIP couldn’t recover in the final moments of the contest. “We bowled really really well. This was a fresh strip so we didn’t know what were good lines and lengths. And the bowlers adjusted really well. And they were brave at the death too.” “We just need to keep coming harder in the next seven games,” he added. Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Sunil Narine said he was feeling the pressure but managed to keep his calm while bowling a successful final over. KKR were seemingly down and out when KXIP needed 22 from the final three overs but Narine tilted the match in his side’s favour by dismissing Nicholas Pooran and conceding just two runs in the 18th over. Narine also bowled the final over of which KXIP needed 14 runs. They needed a six off the final ball to take the match to Super Over but Glenn Maxwell could only score a boundary to hand KKR a two-run win. “When the last ball went up in the air, I thought I was going to bowl full and wide, I bowled full and wide, but then I thought I had made a mistake,” Narine said at the post-match presentation. “It is not ideal (for me to bowling at the death) but someone has to do that. I am used to doing it in the past. Inside the pulse is racing, but this calm is just how I am,” the West Indian off-spinner added. KKR captain Dinesh Karthik praised Narine for remaining calm under pressure. “Narine stands up for us a lot of time. He is calm. He is always looking to find the best way to contribute to the team,” said Karthik, who was named man of the match for his counter-attacking 58 off just 29 balls in KKR innings. “Not only Sunil, a lot of credit needs to be given to (Eoin) Morgan and (Brendon) McCullum. I am very lucky to have the world’s best captain by results in my side.” He said when the KXIP players KL Rahul and Mayank were batting, he knew his side would need to do something really special to come back into the game. “With Sunny and Varun there, and Prasidh bowling the way he has done in his first game… Prasidh is special. The way he came back and bowled in the second spell shows how good he is.” Talking about head coach McCullum, Karthik said, “McCullum has been encouraging me to bat higher in the order, but I am looking at what the team needs. I have to give him credit for keeping me in this space.” On Russell who hurt himself during the match and did not bowl, he said, “Whenever Russell gets injured, you know it is hard. He is a very special player, he is a very special person. We need to go and look at him.”

IPL 2020: Difficult to bat up the order as we have number of match-winners, says Eoin Morgan | Cricket News

IPL 2020: Difficult to bat up the order as we have number of match-winners, says Eoin Morgan | Cricket News
SHARJAH: England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan, who is playing the role of a finisher for Kolkata Knight Riders in the ongoing IPL, said it is “difficult” to get a spot higher up the order in a team which boasts of so many “match-winners”. Coming in to bat at No.6, Morgan hit an 18-ball 44 to conjure up hopes of a successful run-chase before KKR fell short by 18 runs against Delhi Capitals’ total of 228 on Saturday. For England, Morgan has mostly appeared at No.5 and 4. Andre Russell (13) and skipper Dinesh Karthik (6) batted ahead of him in the match. IPL 2020 POINTS TABLE Asked if he came out late to bat, Morgan said: “No, I don’t think so. When you look at our batting line-up, we have a number of match-winners, so it’s very difficult to go up the order. “Particularly when you have a world-class all-rounder in Andre Russell. He is an incredible striker, and when he comes up the order, obviously everybody else has to shift down a little bit,” he reasoned at the post-match online press conference. Opening the innings, Sunil Narine has not been able to deliver any performance of note so far. Asked about his place in the batting order, Morgan said: “Sunil is the type of player who can produce match-winning innings. It’s never been a string of scores, over the years, but more about his impact in a game.
“He always takes the positive option, which summarises how we want to play our cricket,” he said. Morgan said his team played fantastic cricket and there were a lot of positives to consider despite the loss. “…Delhi bowled well, to a position of strength and looked like winning it. It just wasn’t meant to be,” he said. “We move on, we played some fantastic cricket throughout so far but Delhi have looked more promising early in the tournament, so to come out and produce a fantastic game but not getting over the line, there are huge positives to take.” Put in to bat, Shreyas Iyer (88) and Prithvi Shaw (66) powered the Capitals to 228 for 4. DC then returned to restrict KKR to 210 for eight with Anrich Nortje taking three wickets. “I don’t think a lot went wrong. To come to Sharjah, you expect a 200-plus in a game and potentially they got a couple of boundaries too many but we were still in the game till the 20th over,” Morgan said. “T20 can be over-complicated at times. I think when you play at a small ground, you can delve into people’s mistake too much. So, going back and looking at the execution of our yorkers, length balls and bouncers and honest about how to move forward is important.” Delhi Capitals assistant coach Mohammad Kaif attributed the win to the intensity shown by the batters in the power-play. “Sharjah has been a high-scoring game. So, we had to come back stronger. We had spoken to our batters to show more intensity in the Power-play,” he said. “(Prithvi) Shaw played a fantastic knock, we have seen Shaw how dangerous he can be in the Power-play. But we had the intent, we spoke about it right from the first ball and we saw that from the batters. “First Shaw and Shikhar (Dhawan) started and then Shreyas Iyer played a brilliant knock…overall it was a team performance and the batters had the intention to play their shots”. The former India batsman praised veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra for dismissing Shubman Gill before being forced to leave the field due to an arm injury. “Amit Mishra got injured I think. He would have played a major role. He was a bit different compared to other bowlers, a bit slower in the air…Shubman Gill’s wicket was very important because he is someone who likes to play till the end,” he said. “Rabada probably had a bad day … but the way Mishra bowled to Gill was great to see.”

IPL 2020: Dinesh Karthik should bat after Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell, says Gautam Gambhir | Cricket News

IPL 2020: Dinesh Karthik should bat after Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell, says Gautam Gambhir | Cricket News
SHARJAH: Two-time IPL winning Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir believes current skipper Dinesh Karthik should bat after Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell and also wants Sunil Narine to be dropped from the top of the order. Apart from a 23-ball 30 coming at no 3 against Mumbai Indians, Karthik has failed to produce any significant score despite batting ahead of Morgan so far in the tournament. The wicket-keeper batsman scored 6 after coming on to bat at no 5 against Delhi Capitals on Saturday even as Morgan (44 off 18) and Rahul Tripathi (36 off 16) raised hopes of a successful chase after batting at no 6 and 8 respectively. IPL 2020 POINTS TABLE “Rahul Tripathi goes up the order, Dinesh Karthik plays at no 6, not before Morgan and not before Russell as well. Probably Sunil Narine goes to bat at 8 or 9. If Morgan bats no 4 and Russell at 5 and Dinesh Karthik to follow,” Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo. The former India opener also felt Karthik miscalculated by giving the 19th over to spinner Varun Chakravarthy (1/49) as it yielded 20 runs. “Your best bowlers need to ball the 18th, 19th and 20th over, unfortunately it didn’t happen. Pat Cummins, Sunil Narine — if a spinner has to bowl. Even Mavi, he did a fabulous job in the previous games and so did Andre Russell. You have to got to give your best bowlers,” he said.
“Yes Varun Chakravarty did bowl well in the first few overs but you cannot expect a young spinner to be bowling the 19th over and that too in Sharjah, probably it was a miscalculation.” Gambhir said KKR gave away 20-25 runs extra at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium which has shorter boundaries. “It is never finished till it is finished, that’s what we saw in Sharjah. These are too many runs, probably, 20-25 runs more than what KKR was expecting. “It was the brilliance of (Anrich) Nortje, just backing himself which actually changed the fortune of the match,” he said referring Nortje’s the 19th over in which he conceded just five runs and took a wicket. Gambhir also praised Iyer for his 38-ball 88, which was laced with seven fours and six maximum hits. “We keep talking about how he plays spin but today he showed that he can dominate fast bowlers as well,” he said.
