#entrance to the underworld! BORINGGGGG

I feel like that's it, they are hitting every plot point but everything else in between feels rushed and a fast way to hit every plot point like a check list. The charm in the books are the importance the little side quests/ distractions get, it makes the world feel more alive. I feel like the closest we got to that were episodes 3 and 4, maybe 5 with the love ride.
Rick really hit the nail in the head fusing both worlds together in the books in interesting ways (crusty's matress shop, the monster doughnut chains appearing out of nowhere, the entrance to the underworld being a record label in L.A.) and in the show we're not given enough time to explore and understand all those things.
Like i get Rick is trying to do things differently, and people saying "well yeah he wrote them 18 years ago ofc he would do things differently now" but i feel like we're defending him a bit too much. It's gotten to the point were it just feels like lazy (and almost bad, im sorry) writing, not even a "doing things differently" just "we don't have the time or budget for that so let's gloss over it". I really do love what they're doing with the characters but damn everything else feels so bland.
Another point i've seen discussed is how divided people are with "the kids know too much" vs "ofc the know too much they were trained for it" so let me raise you this: i get the second point, But there is something called suspense. By the characters not knowing what they're walking into the audience feels intrigue; Aunty Em was an easy guess. By the time they walked into the Lotus Hotel they were most likely incredibly exhausted, and let's not forget they're also 12 years old. It wouldn't have been a stretch for them to not realize until it was too late, and it also would've kept us on our toes. I don't even know where to begin with the Crusty thing, i think that was the most blatant "we really don't have time for this" they really did not hide that at all, does the scene appear a bit out of left field in the book? maybe, but it was also fun and showed Percy's quick thinking.
Yes, Annabeth spent the last five years at camp, yes Grover is meant to protect demigods, and yes Sally told Percy the myths as bedtime stories, but sometimes people mess up! people forget, and especially 12 year old kids who have been on the run for the last seven days across the entire country attacked constantly by monsters, it just Makes Sense that some things would go over their heads. Really, what's more likely here, Percy remembering every single detail of every single story that Sally ever told him, or Percy remembering the gist of it but forgetting key details? More importantly, what's more narratively interesting and likely to generate conflict?
I really think the show has potential but not if they keep it up like this, I'm not mad, just dissapointed.
they're REALLY suffering from the short episodes. like to the point where i feel like i'm just watching a live-action version of the pjo wikipedia page
like yeah they're hitting every plot point, which is good, but it really feels like as soon as one thing's over they're already halfway to the next thing
#im sorry for the ramble but ep 3 really got my hopes up and the way they're rushing things now. sucks ass#grabbed the book to check. Percy does know who procrustes is but obviously once he tells him his name and grover and annabeth are trapped#like if they were really short on time they should've just cut out that scene and went straight to DOA#where an entrance to the underworld makes more sense? and it's more fun? why would they choose to pair it with a monster they barely even#pay attention to. they give crusty 0 importance and there it is#entrance to the underworld! BORINGGGGG#i remember first time reading it the crusty thing just felt like another obstacle nothing too big. so why bother putting it in.#just skip to the good part. DOA was great why the hell would you cut that out#like i dont mind them knowing stuff but when they just go “i know who you are” for the fifth time. it gets boring after a while#pjo show crit#rr crit#also i feel like they should've saved the gloominess for the next seasons... why does everything look gray and depressing
