Bollywood Movies Part CCVIII
Inspector Jatil Yadav (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) investigates the murder of the influential Raghubeer Singh (Khalid Tyabji) on his wedding night to his young second wife Radha (Radhika Apte). As Jatil investigates, he learns more about Raghubeer’s proclivities and about family secrets long left undisturbed, including the truth about the death of Jatil’s first wife (Natasha Rastogi).
CW for movie: human trafficking, rape, sexual abuse of a minor, some gore. Raat Akeli Hai is a good whodunnit that gives us a satisfying ending, while also being a love story. I enjoyed Jatil and Radha’s interactions, but I loved the performances of Shivani Raghuvanshi and Padmavati Rao as the combative Vasudha (Raghubeer’s niece) and the reprehensible Pramila Singh (Raghubeer’s sister-in-law) respectively. Ila Arun was also good as Jatil’s mother who wants him to get married. Favorite song is Ghoom Charkhya (no subtitles).
Kaajal (Bhumi Pednekar) moves out from her cousin Dolly’s (Konkona Sen Sharma) place when Dolly’s husband Amit (Aamir Bashir) makes a move on her and leaves her hated factory job. To make ends meet, she starts working at an adult call center as Kitty and begins an affair with “Pradeep” (Vikrat Massey), one of her callers. Meanwhile, Dolly deals with trying to make ends meet for her and Amit’s new luxury apartment that under construction and with the backlash against her son Pappu (Kalp Shah) liking girly things.
CW: corporal punishment. Dolly Kitty aur woh Chamakte Sitare is a good film about two cousins and their lives. It does a good job talking about women experiencing sex and desire without punishing them for it. It also doesn’t shy away from showing the realities of the society they live in, but doesn’t make those realities disheartening. A great example of this is the call center and how all the women there support each other. Favorite songs are Neet Ve and Khwabida (audio only). Neither song has subtitles.
Akash (Aditya Roy Kapur) goes to local crime lord Sattu Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi) to help take down a sex video made of him and his ex-girlfriend Shruti (Sanya Malhotra) without their knowledge. Meanwhile, Aalu (Rajkummar Rao) tries to help the woman he loves, Pinky (Fatima Sana Shaikh), when she comes to him to help get her husband out of jail for being prime suspect in a murder Sattu Bhaiya committed. After being released from prison, Bittu (Abhishek Bachchan), Sattu Bhaiya’s former second in command, meets Mini (Inayat Verma) who has run away from home and agrees with her plan to pretend to kidnap her to get her parents’ attention. Rahul (Rohit Saraf), after being taken by Sattu Bhaiya for being near the murder, manages to get Sattu Bhaiya’s money with the help of nurse Sheeja (Pearle Maaney), but Sattu Bhaiya sends his goons after them to get his money back.
Ludo is an entertaining dark comedy that is structurally based on the board game ludo (more recognizable to Americans as Parcheesi). It was quite entertaining and funny, while also being heartwarming. I loved Bittu and Mini’s story because of how cute it was, especially when Mini prompts Bittu on how to make ransom calls to her parents. Overall, a fun romp. Favorite songs are Qismat Ki Hawa Kabhi Naram (originally from Albela), Aarbaad Barbaad, and Meri Tum Ho. None of the songs have subtitles.
#the great venture into Bollywood#also watch raat akeli hai for the ultimate rejection of fair and lovely cream#i'm pretty sure sheeja was made malayali so they could reference neram by using pistah in a scene in ludo#i don't have a favorite because they're all good but i would most likely rewatch ludo

Behind the Scenes: How Madhubanti Bagchi Creates Magic in Her Music
The Indian music industry is a melting pot of genres, influences, and creative talent, but few artists stand out for their ability to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity. Madhubanti Bagchi, a versatile singer-songwriter, has carved a niche for herself in this dynamic space. Known for her soulful renditions and experimental style, Madhubanti is more than just a musician; she is a storyteller who connects deeply with her audience. This article delves into her inspiring journey, unique sound, and how she is redefining the Indian music landscape.
Early Life and Musical Influences
Madhubanti Bagchi’s musical journey began in her formative years in West Bengal, a region celebrated for its rich cultural heritage and musical legacy. Growing up, she was immersed in a world of Rabindra Sangeet, traditional Bengali folk songs, and classical music. These early influences shaped her appreciation for melody, poetry, and storytelling.
Her initial exposure to music came through family traditions and community gatherings, where songs were more than entertainment — they were a means of preserving history and emotions. Recognizing her natural affinity for music, her family encouraged her to pursue formal training. Madhubanti honed her craft under the guidance of esteemed mentors, mastering both classical and contemporary techniques.
As she grew older, Madhubanti began experimenting with Bollywood classics, jazz, and indie sounds. Her ability to merge these diverse influences into a cohesive style set her apart. This amalgamation of traditional and modern elements became her signature, allowing her to appeal to audiences across generations.
Breaking Through in the Indian Music Industry
Madhubanti’s breakthrough moment came with her release of Aaj Ki Raat, a hauntingly beautiful track that showcased her emotional depth and vocal range. The song resonated widely, quickly garnering millions of streams and earning her a loyal fanbase. Unlike many emerging artists, she did not confine herself to a single genre. Instead, Madhubanti embraced diversity in her music, which helped her stand out in a competitive industry.
One of her standout performances was her rendition of Shayad from the Bollywood film Love Aaj Kal. While the original was already popular, Madhubanti’s version brought a refreshing vulnerability to the song, earning praise from critics and fans alike. Other notable tracks like Barbaadiyan highlighted her ability to deliver relatable lyrics paired with timeless melodies, further solidifying her position as a rising star.
Musical Style and Unique Appeal
What makes Madhubanti Bagchi truly special is her ability to tell stories through music. Her songs often explore themes of love, loss, resilience, and hope, making them deeply relatable. Unlike many mainstream artists, she doesn’t rely solely on catchy hooks or heavy production. Instead, her strength lies in her emotive voice and meaningful lyrics.
Madhubanti’s music often features intricate arrangements that blend traditional instruments like the sitar and tabla with modern synths and beats. This fusion creates a sound that is both nostalgic and contemporary, appealing to listeners with varied tastes.
Her voice, often described as soulful and expressive, has the power to evoke a wide range of emotions. Whether it’s a melancholic ballad or an upbeat indie track, Madhubanti’s delivery ensures that each song leaves a lasting impression.
The Digital Revolution: Expanding Her Reach
In today’s digital age, Madhubanti has skillfully leveraged platforms like Spotify, YouTube, and Instagram to grow her audience. On Spotify alone, she has over 12 million monthly listeners and is featured in more than 23,000 playlists. These impressive numbers reflect her ability to connect with listeners worldwide.
Social media has played a significant role in her rise. With over 157,000 followers on Instagram, Madhubanti actively engages with her fans through live sessions, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and interactive posts. This direct connection not only fosters loyalty but also allows her to understand her audience’s preferences.
Platforms like YouTube have also been instrumental in her success. Her music videos, which combine cinematic visuals with compelling narratives, have garnered millions of views. This visual element enhances the storytelling in her songs, creating a more immersive experience for her fans.
Challenges and Triumphs
Like any independent artist, Madhubanti has faced her share of challenges. Breaking into an industry dominated by established labels and artists is no easy feat. However, her determination, coupled with her innovative approach, has helped her overcome these obstacles.
One of her biggest triumphs has been her ability to stay true to her roots while experimenting with new styles. This balance of authenticity and adaptability has allowed her to appeal to both traditionalists and modern music enthusiasts.
Impact on the Indian Music Landscape
Madhubanti Bagchi is more than just a singer; she is a cultural ambassador who showcases the richness of Indian music on a global stage. By blending elements of Bengali folk music with contemporary genres, she has introduced traditional sounds to younger audiences and international listeners.
Her success also paves the way for aspiring artists who may feel constrained by the industry’s commercial demands. Madhubanti’s journey proves that it’s possible to achieve mainstream success without compromising on artistic integrity.
Conclusion

Merry Christmas Movie Review: MERRY CHRISTMAS is well made and laced with a fine performance.
Merry Christmas Review {3.5/5} & Review Rating
MERRY CHRISTMAS is the story of two strangers and their unforgettable adventure. In the late 80s, Albert (Vijay Sethupathi) returns to his home in Bombay after several years on Christmas Eve. His mother passed away a year ago and he's devastated over the loss. He goes out to have a drink. At a restobar, he meets Maria (Katrina Kaif) and her mute daughter, Annie (Pari Maheshwari Sharma). Albert and Maria start talking and soon, Maria invites him home. She reveals that her husband Jerome (Luke Kenny) is cheating on her. Albert, meanwhile, opens up about his dead girlfriend Rosie (Radhika Apte). Maria puts Annie to sleep and goes out with Albert. When they return, they get the shock of their lives. And this is just the beginning of many twists and turns that await them.
MERRY CHRISTMAS is based on the book 'Le Monte-Charge' by Frédéric Dard. Sriram Raghavan, Arijit Biswas, Pooja Ladha Surti and Anukriti Pandey's story is unconventional and gripping. Sriram Raghavan, Arijit Biswas, Pooja Ladha Surti and Anukriti Pandey's screenplay is captivating and after a point, doesn't let your attention wander even for a second. But the writing stretches at some parts. Sriram Raghavan, Arijit Biswas, Pooja Ladha Surti and Anukriti Pandey's dialogues are sharp and witty, especially the ones mouthed by Vijay Sethupathi.
Sriram Raghavan's direction is bravura. The filmmaker's distinct execution style and trademark stamp are visible from start to finish, be it in the film's vintage aspects, music and of course, in the twists and turns. Also, this time he gives an out-of-the-box experience as he uses the slow burn technique. As a result, nothing shocking happens until a few minutes before the intermission. Post-interval, the film goes on a high as too many amusing and thrilling developments occur. From here on, the audience will be completely on the edge of their seats. The climax is unexpected.
On the flipside, the film might test the patience of the audience in the first half, especially in the first 15 minutes. Ideally, the run time should have been two hours. The ending is a bit abrupt and it might not be acceptable to some of the moviegoers. Lastly, the film has a niche appeal and is not meant for the mass audience.
Speaking of performances, it’s a Vijay Sethupathi show without a shred of doubt. The actor, with his deadpan expressions and dry sense of humour, takes the cake. Only he could have pulled this role off so smoothly. Katrina Kaif also puts her best foot forward and delivers a stupendous performance. Certain scenes were challenging but she manages to deliver a convincing act. Sanjay Kapoor (Ronnie Fernandes) is entertaining. Vinay Pathak (Paresh Kamdar) is rocking, though he has limited screen time. Tinnu Anand (Albert’s uncle) and Pratima Kannan (Lakshmi; cop) leave a huge mark. Ashwini Kalsekar (Scarlett) is there for just a scene and is memorable. Pari Maheshwari Sharma is cute. Luke Kenny and Radhika Apte are fair in cameo appearances.
Merry Christmas – Hindi Trailer | Vijay Sethupathi | Katrina Kaif | Sriram Raghavan | Ramesh Taurani
Pritam's music is well-woven into the narrative. The title track and 'Raat Akeli Thi' are the best of the lot. 'Nazar Teri' and 'Dil Ki Mez Pe' are just okay. Daniel B George's background score enhances the impact, especially in the climax.
Madhu Neelakandan's cinematography is topnotch. Mayur Sharma's production design is realistic yet appealing. The same applies to Anaita Shroff Adajania and Sabina Halder's costumes. Hira Yadav and Sunil Rodrigues' action is devoid of gore and is minimal. Pooja Ladha Surti's editing could have been sharper.
On the whole, MERRY CHRISTMAS is a well-made thriller and is laced with a fine performance by Vijay Sethupathi. At the box office, it’ll need a strong word of mouth to succeed as it appeals only to the multiplex audience in the urban areas.

Blog 1 - My relationship with nature
Growing up, my siblings, cousins, and I had the privilege of living together in the same apartment complex in the city, at times even in the very same apartment. It was crowded, loud, and messy, but as a young child, it was the most fun I could ever have. As children of immigrants, money was scarce, so the outdoors was our biggest entertainer. We would walk to the park together, roll down the grassy hills, climb trees, make wishes on dandelions, and collect ladybugs. During warm spring evenings, we would often sit just outside the building courtyard to enjoy the warm air with our parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents and would watch as fireflies flew through the overgrown grass. Our grandparents would tell us stories about their own adventures outdoors, the various plants and herbs not found in Canada which they would cultivate for medicinal purposes, and legends behind the wildlife inhabiting the mountains where they grew up.
Slowly, the fireflies stopped coming out in our neighborhood, and my cousins and grandparents all moved elsewhere. My parents and siblings began to get busy with work and school, but I was never able to outgrow my love for being outside and my fascination with plants and wildlife. Being outdoors, seeing green frogs rest at the edge of a pond half submerged in algae-covered water, the smell of wet grass and damp wood after a heavy rainfall, listening to the wind blow through the trees and causing the willow leaves to flow like water, seeing how the sunlight turns gray city puddles into molten gold, all of these moments allow me to take my mind off the rush and noise of the city. Nature allows me to think of things on a smaller scale and appreciate how every living thing on earth what lives carries importance.
In 2020, with nothing else to do, my family and I began going on walks outdoors to pass the time. We began to walk around all the parks and ravines in the neighborhood and the more we walked in a particular area, the more we became aware of its inhabitants, and we began using field guides to help identify the new plants we came across during our walks. We would have conversations about the plants and wildlife that my parents grew up around themselves in their native country. My mom would teach me how to name things in our native language, and one day bought us a night blooming jasmine (called “raat ki rani” meaning “queen of the night") to keep in our home. It was a fragrant flower which was an important part of my parents heritage and upbringing.
Being in nature has always helped me to connect two aspects of my life–my ethnic background and my life here in Canada–which have for a long time caused me confusion regarding my identity. I can say with confidence that my family as a whole has offered me a sense of place in nature. When I am in nature, I feel a deep connection to my parents, grandparents, and my ancestors despite being on the other side of the world. It reminds me of all the stories and knowledge accumulated by my elders which have been passed down to me, and the new discoveries I make and stories I create for myself as I continue to explore the natural world around me.

Vivek’s Top Tracks: A Playlist for Every Mood
Indian music has always been a rich tapestry of diverse cultures, sounds, and traditions. It’s a domain where the old often meets the new, creating magic. Amidst this dynamic landscape, Vivek has emerged as a musician who seamlessly fuses the essence of Indian heritage with modern innovation. With his captivating melodies, humor-infused storytelling, and ability to connect with audiences of all ages, Vivek is redefining what it means to be a music artist in contemporary India.
The Journey of a Rising Star
Born in a small town, Vivek’s musical journey began humbly. Inspired by local folk tunes and Bollywood classics played at family gatherings, he developed an early appreciation for rhythm and melody. But his aspirations didn’t stop at mere appreciation. Vivek wanted to create music that resonated with the heartbeats of millions.
His first breakthrough came in the form of a YouTube video, where he performed a humorous yet touching song about everyday life struggles. The video went viral, not only for its catchy tune but also for its relatability. Audiences appreciated how Vivek addressed real-life issues with wit and authenticity. This marked the beginning of his meteoric rise in the Indian music scene.
Fusing Tradition with Modernity
One of Vivek’s most distinguishing traits is his ability to blend traditional Indian instruments, such as the tabla, sitar, and flute, with contemporary electronic beats and synthesizers. In songs like Suraj Ki Kiranein, he combines the earthy tones of Indian folk with pop rhythms, creating an unforgettable auditory experience.
What makes Vivek’s music special is not just the sound but the emotions it carries. He often draws inspiration from the simple joys and sorrows of life, crafting stories that listeners can connect with. Whether it’s a love ballad or an upbeat celebration of friendship, his songs feel deeply personal yet universal.
Breaking Boundaries with Humor
Humor is a signature element of Vivek’s music. Unlike many artists who stick to conventional themes of love and heartbreak, Vivek isn’t afraid to poke fun at societal norms or highlight the quirks of daily life. His track Padosi Ki Biwi, for instance, humorously explores the nosy tendencies of neighbors while showcasing his musical genius.
This approach has made Vivek immensely popular among younger audiences who appreciate his light-hearted take on serious topics. By intertwining humor with melody, he ensures that his songs are not only entertaining but also memorable.
Milestones in Vivek’s Career
Vivek’s career is dotted with milestones that have cemented his place in the industry. His debut album, Dil Ka Caravan, was a chartbuster, garnering millions of streams within weeks of its release. Tracks like Chandni Raat and Baat Pyaar Ki became anthems for their heartfelt lyrics and innovative compositions.
Collaborations have also played a crucial role in Vivek’s success. He has worked with prominent names in the industry, from renowned playback singers to indie artists. His duet with singer Priya Sharma in Jeevan Ki Patang showcased his versatility, blending classical and contemporary styles seamlessly.
Impact on the Indian Music Scene
Vivek’s rise is not just a personal triumph; it is indicative of a larger trend in the Indian music industry. Artists are increasingly breaking free from formulaic Bollywood tracks, exploring genres like indie pop, folk fusion, and experimental electronic music. Vivek has become a flagbearer for this movement, inspiring a new generation of musicians to take risks and innovate.
Moreover, his music has a cross-generational appeal. While millennials admire his fresh sound, older audiences appreciate his nods to traditional Indian melodies. This ability to bridge the gap between generations has made him a household name.
Challenges and Triumphs
Like every artist, Vivek has faced his share of challenges. Breaking into the competitive Indian music industry required resilience and creativity. Early in his career, he struggled to find platforms to showcase his talent. However, social media became a game-changer. Platforms like YouTube and Instagram allowed him to reach a wide audience without the need for traditional industry gatekeepers.
Critics have occasionally questioned his use of humor, labeling it as a distraction from the depth of his music. But Vivek has embraced such critiques, using them as fuel to create even more impactful songs. His ability to turn challenges into opportunities is one of his greatest strengths.
The Future of Vivek’s Music
The future looks bright for Vivek. With plans to collaborate with international artists and explore genres like jazz and reggae, he aims to take Indian music to global audiences. His upcoming album promises to be a blend of experimental sounds and deeply personal lyrics, reflecting his growth as an artist.
In addition to music, Vivek is also keen on nurturing new talent. He recently announced an initiative to mentor young musicians from underprivileged backgrounds, aiming to give them the opportunities he once struggled to find.
Conclusion
Vivek is not just a musician; he is a storyteller, a cultural bridge, and a pioneer. His music is a reflection of India’s evolving identity, where tradition and modernity coexist harmoniously. By staying true to his roots while embracing innovation, he has redefined what it means to be an Indian artist in the 21st century.
What’s your favorite Vivek song? Share your thoughts in the comments below! If you haven’t already, explore Vivek’s latest tracks on Spotify and follow him on social media for updates on his upcoming projects. OF THE LEGENDARY KHANNA OF MUSIC - USHA KHANNA!
An entertaining anecdote around another super duper hit song, again involving Usha Khanna. The one thing that constantly saddened Usha ji, (& that infact was a indirect qun asked of her by many male interviewers), was how being a lady became a big hinderance in her forming the kinda camaraderie that other male music directors had with their producer-directors, camaraderie that at times greatly assists creativity.- stuff like, working continuously till late into the nights unbeknownst of time or place or having to worry about high decency of expression etc around people. PS. Although she says, all the male colleagues she worked with throughout her career loved her so genuinely, that she never felt scared around them. Yet, twas they who'd be so shy & hesitant, so as to voluntarily pack up recordings at 7:30 pm sharp with her, etc. Yet, this one above-mentioned song, involved an entertaining incident, quite outside the norm. A particular song had to be recorded at most by the next day, for which the desired tune was not being achieved. The producer frustrated at the lack of progress even left in a huff. Usha ji & her lyricist Indeevar ji, alongwith their assistant, worked like crazy till late into the night, but to no avail. Then Indeevar ji came up with the idea of changing location, & twas decided to go roam around Carter Road, at 1am in the night. While on the drive back, they glanced upon a house of one of their common friends, & decided to pay him a visit. However, Usha suddenly became hesitant, being a lady, & the common friend being a married male, what his wife might think of it all, a woman entering announced into their home at 2 in the night. Yet the team asked her to think none of it, & they went anyway. The door was opened by their good friend & music legend Bhupinder Singh- who immediately blurted, "Arre Munni (his pet name for Usha), tu?! Itni raat ko, poori mandli ke saath?!" They mischievously mentioned their urge for a hot cuppa chai at this time of night, a request they knew their dear friend would not be able to refuse. Bhupinder of course let them in, & twas then during their refreshing night out, sitting right inside Bhupinder's house at 3 in the night, that the perfect tune for the song came to Usha, for which this entire rigmarole'd begun anyway, ...she immediately ordered for the harmonium from Bhupinder's room, & a masterpiece got tuned then & there! Creativity, & their funny, interesting, entertaining, & even weird, but ultimately successful journeys! . . And this is that masterpiece, that became one of the big musical rages of the year, & of all time! 1.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPT-rm0C0WE 2.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DRVa58kAks
Another most entertaining incident on one of the very big superhit songs of the time, is worthy of anecdote. And since this incident involves Kishore Kumar, one of the greatest natural comedians of Indian cinema, you know it gotta be funny at some level! So Super Legendary Music Director Usha Khanna (Ranked 3rd @ Indies, in the soon-to-be-completed All-Time Music Directors List, as of now!), was waiting for Kishore Kumar for recording this song at Famous Studios, ironically infamous for not having the track system of sound recording, & hence needing the singers' live presence throughout the entire song sitting. As it turns out, Usha received word that a person was on the landline phone across the verandah eagerly waiting to speak to her (no cellphones then). As she went across the open yard & picked up the phone, a very ill sounding voice murmured, "Arre Usha , pata hai mere pet me na bauhut zor ka dard ho raha hai, main aaj nahi aa paunga." Usha instantly recognized the voice & the mischief behind it. "Dada (Kishore Kumar), main jaanti hoon aap ki awaaz ko, aapke pet wet me koi dard nahi hua hai, jaldi aa jaiye pls, mere Famous Studios ki recording aapke bina nahi ho payegi, aap jante hain". "Arre nahi yar, main sach keh raha hoon, bahut zor ka dard hai, achha haan chal bye", saying this Kishore abruptly disconnected. Usha was aghast at having been left stranded so, at such an important sitting. She sadly trotted back to her seat, & mulled over what all losses would be incurred coz of it. Few mins later, commotion ensued inside the Studio room behind them, "Kishore da aa gaye, Kishore da aa gaye!". Usha & the entire team ran in, to find Kishore inside, meticulously preparing for his take, as if nothing had happened. Usha was relieved beyond expression, yet irritatingly blurted, "Dada, aap bhi na, aise darane aur sataane me aapko maza aata hai kya". Kishore laughed & replied ,"Usha, main kaam toh darane wala hi karne wala tha, par teri mehnat ne tujhe bacha liya!" Usha was utterly perplexed. "Matlab?" He revealed, "Asal mein, vo phone call toh sach hi tha. .. Hua ye ki, Famous Studio pahunchne se 10 min pehle, maine apne driver ko aajke (dummy/rough song recorded by other singers) tape bajane ko kaha. Usne ittefaq se, doosre MD ka gana baja diya, jo mujhe aaj hi gana tha. Us me itna sargam tha, aur tum toh jaanti ho classical se mere rishta, mera pet ne vakay jawab de diya, bure bure khyal aane lage, aur mere ghar bhaagne ki teevr ichha hone lagi. Tabhi maine gaadi se utarke tumhe phone kiya. .. Par Famous se aage nikalte hi, jab yaad aya aaj toh do MD ke gaane the, toh driver se tumhara gaane bajane ko kaha, aur tumhara geet sunke, dil itna khush hua, pet dard sab bhaag gaya, aur mann kiya ye geet main aaj hi kya, abhi record karunga! Aur bas aa pahuncha!" Everyone was relieved at this back-handed compliment from the legend, & the recording was completed. Wanna know which song caused all this happily ending drama!? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFfYG4e--ao
