Progression: Taking the Leap

And we're back at it again with more progress shots!

The Sketch Layer(s) - Another set of two layers. This stage is sort of like my thumbnail, establishing the idea of where I want to take the actual piece.

The Lineart Layer - Unlike in Ag's Shop, everything ended up on the same lineart layer here. To make the lake reflection look less 'stable', I cut down on the size of the brush and intentionally let myself draw more loosely.

The Base Coloring - One of these days, I'll actually look into color theory and how to form a color palette. Until then, you're getting the same consistent base colors for everybody.

The Pond - Obviously, the reflection of the underside of the gazebo couldn't look exactly the same as the actual gazebo! This water was just a shade of blue set to illuminate the layer underneath. Maybe that's not how water works, but this is magic water!

The Shading - One of the most useful coloring tips I learned when starting out was to never use black as the basis for shading. Always use different colors. For this piece, it's actually a shade of purple!

The Lighting - The same goes for highlights! Rather than white, the shading for this piece was a shade of (very) light blue.

The Telescope - A big part of this 'scene' was our collective focusing on the observatory that we were traveling to. I tried to make it seem like the telescope could be submerged under the water and we're looking down on it.

The Finishing Touches - I knew that I wanted to add in some splashes of brighter colors to the pond for the sort of 'portal' effect. But initially the plan was to make them a lot more subtle until I realized I sort of enjoyed the slapdash brushstrokes. Honestly, that's how a lot of my art process works; get an idea, fuck around, and stumble accidentally on something I like.

That's all for now! We'll see if I can come up with any new ideas on how to make progressions interesting or if I'll just end up churning out the same information again.

Scheduling Update

As we gear up to reach the end of our level 4 adventuring throwbacks, I've got a bit of an update to make for posting.

I move in a little under a week, and, spoiler alert, the final stretch of level 4 comics and art will be wrapped up at the end of this week. I didn't plan to have the two coincide, but I'm so glad it worked out that way. Because after level 4 has been completed, I'm going to be taking a couple weeks' hiatus to, yk, move and settle in a little bit.

I'm not 100% sure what the scheduling of things will look like. Currently, I'm planning on having two weeks off, and then posting those between-levels sketches and doodles once a week for another couple weeks before hitting the ground running with level 5. But we'll have to see! I don't wanna make any promises yet.

Anyways, all that to say, enjoy the rest of level 4, and I'll see you guys on the other side!
