Still thinking about Fate/Strange Fake and how all the “False” Servants were summoned through individual desire, sometimes without catalysts, by people who didn’t have a strong sense of self but wanted to live.
First we have Tine, who belongs to the tribe whose ancestral lands were taken to found Snowfield. They essentially co-opt another mage’s summoning of Gilgamesh because they know he’s one of the oldest and most powerful Heroic Spirits. Tine says herself that she’s been offered up as “a sacrifice” to the King of Heroes. The thing that they don’t count on is that Gilgamesh may be a tyrant but he’s not actually interested randomly murdering human beings just for fun and giggles. He doesn’t love humanity but he also doesn’t hate Tine because she’s human - she’s a child, and he is interested to see what kind of person she will grow up to be. But to do that, she must develop a will of her own. So far, their dynamic is far more friendly and personable than was the dynamic between Kirei and Gilgamesh, but the parallels are there. Tine wants to fight on behalf of her people and do her duty, but she’s so young that Gilgamesh knows that she still has a will of her own - deep down.
Flat can also be considered an example of this. As one of Waver’s prized students, we know he’s got to be powerful but he’s also shown to be, like, stupidly in tune with mana and magical energies. I mean, he summoned a Berserker-class Servant in broad daylight, without a summoning circle, using a piece of video game merch for a catalyst. He can spy on other Masters by tuning into their familiars, and can remain almost undetected while doing so. We don’t know his reason for joining the Holy Grail War - maybe he doesn’t even have a big “reason” beyond the explicitly stated one that he thinks it would be cool. And even though his Servant is Jack the Ripper, they’re shown to get along reasonably well. Flat’s probably a lot more powerful than he acts/appears.
But definitely the best examples of this are with Enkidu and Tsubaki Kuroka.
First, Tsubaki, because her Servant is my favorite in the series, actually. In her introduction, we’re met with her parents - full-blooded and experienced mages - who are talking to a nurse after Tsubaki goes unconscious during a particularly brutal round of magical training. The nurse gently explains that their prepubescent daughter might never wake up again and the Kurokas immediately ask if her reproductive organs are still functioning. When the nurse says yes, they’re overjoyed. They do not view their daughter as a person but as a means to an end. They intended to make her into a catalyst using crestworms a la Zouken Matou, but if she fails at that, she can still be used as “breeding stock” - that’s all she is to her parents. But Tsubaki’s will to live is strong - and because she is so close to the boundary of death, her desire summons a being that is not a Heroic Spirit, nor a Divine Spirit. She summons the Pale Rider, the living harbinger of Death itself, into her service. That is beyond the pale (pun accidental) of any summoning we’ve ever seen in Fate, period.
All me to elaborate further: Enkidu’s Master in the war isn’t even a human being. The mage who winds up summoning him was creating chimeras in hopes of having a living catalyst to summon down a creature from the Throne of the Gods - implied to be an Egyptian pharaoh or a god’s reincarnation, perhaps Ozymandias or even Narmer? - but the chimera, being an animal, runs at the last minute. When the mage shoots the chimera with the intent to kill, the chimera clings to its strong instinct to live. This is the catalyst that summons Enkidu into the Lancer-class - where they’re more connected to nature and the Earth. (A Berserker-Enkidu is implied to be closer to a god, and definitely would not appear human as their Lancer form does.) Just the instinct of an animal who wanted to live and be safe.
MAYBE IT’S JUST ME BUT THE PARALLELS!!! I SEE THEM!!!! CAN THIS BE A COINCIDENCE?? AM I SIMPLY STARVED FOR STRANGE/FAKE TO UPDATE???? WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN, NARITA?? pls release the new volume soon i beg u
#fate strange fake#fate series#CATCH ME NEVER GETTING OVER THE PALE RIDER AND TSUBAKI KUROKA#AAAAAAAAAA#i've seen some discourse on how people think that the pale rider is supposed to be pestilence who is not the pale rider#but like also#enkidu calls the pale rider his 'natural enemy'#enkidu as a lancer is a being which is connected to the life force of the world itself#at one point they literally cause the nevada desert to bloom!!!#so the natural enemy of enkidu is not disease - it's DEATH!!#i'm sure gil and the pale rider are gonna have a helluva battle#tho i'm not sure i'm ready to see enkidu perish again#i also want all the interactions between flat and false berserker#they are so funny i love them#i could get into the True Servants as well#because True Berserker may just be the actual Thomas Alva Edison if i'm not mistaken???
