Stop judging, start learning

In golf, tomorrow’s performance is dependant not upon today’s performance, but upon today’s learning, so removing obstacles to learning is a worthy pursuit.  One big obstacle is our habit of value judging a shot as soon as it leaves the clubface. Before the ball has even reached the apex of its flight we’ve decided whether it’s good or bad, its likely outcome, and how it might affect our round.

With this pure, unfiltered stream of data coming in with each shot, your brain’s incredible computing capabilities can go to work, observing cause and effect and solving problems.

Much physical learning occurs like this, often below the level of conscious thought - making small adjustments in order to perform a task more accurately, more efficiently, more powerfully.  

Watch a toddler learning to walk and you’ll see trial and error without self-admonishment and with a learning curve that’s off the charts.  It’s a great example for us adults to aspire to.  

My challenge to you next time you play or practise is to see how many shots you can view with curiosity rather than elation or despair.  The next round, or even the next shot, will benefit.
