snafu and flower meanings
(this was gonna be more of a hc style post but then i started actually writing it and now it’s turned into a full on scene so, enjoy, especially @inarex @discosdeacon)
When it comes to matters of the heart, Snafu’s never been the best with his words and has more often than not had to rely on his actions to explain his feelings. In his experience it’s real hit or miss; sometimes the message comes across clear and other times Snafu still has to square up and attempt to verbally explain what’s on his mind, hating how what’s going on in his mind never quite translates to his words.
That’s why he’s so infinitely grateful to Eugene for introducing him to the language of flowers, how every flower and plant has its own specific meaning, so when the words get stuck in his throat he can always run to the shop and hope that Eugene’s not working the counter and that Bill doesn’t open his fat mouth and blabber to Eugene before he can give him the flowers. Cus fuck does he have so much he wants to tell Eugene but he just feel so damn inadequate when it comes to verbalizing.
Snafu is pretty sure before they even get together that he loves Eugene. It’s absolutely terrifying to think that but in his gut he knows and when has his gut ever lied to him? It’s a thought that is completely and utterly cemented in his mind that morning after they square their shit and wake up next to each other, everything feeling too warm and light to be real, when all Snafu wanted to do was stay in bed with Eugene and never leave. But when Eugene rolled his eyes and smiled softly at him before he gently shoved him towards the edge of the bed, told Snafu they’d have time for more later, Snafu knew without a shadow of a doubt that he was a goner. He knew he didn’t want anything else besides Eugene.
Regardless of this certainty, it took a while after that moment for Snafu to finally pull the trigger and tell Eugene. (Not only was he not sure how to say it at first but, while he wasn’t exactly a relationship expert, he knew it probably wasn’t the best move to tell your boyfriend a day into the relationship that you loved him)
He waited until he couldn’t possibly wait another minute, when he almost slipped up and said it to Eugene casually at the end of a phone call- which he guessed wouldn’t be the Worst way to say it, but now that Snafu’s thought of a perfect way to say it, a way someone like Eugene deserved, he couldn’t blow his shot on a slip up.
While Eugene’s away at his therapy appointment one day, Snafu ran into the shop and bought a dozen red roses from Bill, who, of course, was only too happy to give him a hard time, asking him what he did to mess up now. But Snafu refused to fall to the bait and simply paid for his purchase before he left the shop, climbed into his truck, and drove across town to pick Eugene up from his appointment.
After Eugene exited the building, he stowed his bike in the bed of Snafu’s truck as per usual and climbed inside, greeting him like always with a quick kiss.
Snafu almost chickened out as Eugene rested his head against the car seat, exhaustion clear on his face, but he told himself he couldn’t, not now, not after he went through the effort of buying the flowers. So he told Eugene to close his eyes, that he had a surprise for him; thankfully Eugene did as told only after shooting Snafu a quick, confused look. Heart hammering in his chest, Snafu reached into the backseat of the truck and retrieved the flowers from where he hid them on the floor; he gave them a quick brush to rid them of any crumbs before he told Eugene to open his eyes.
It’s apparent immediately that while Eugene appreciates the gesture immensely- his face lighting up so much Snafu felt for a moment as if he were staring into the goddamn sun -the meaning behind the flowers didn’t immediately click in his mind.
So much for letting the flowers do the talking, Snafu thought before he pressed on, determined to tell Eugene.
“Back… all those nights ago, you said roses got meanings for their different colors,” Snafu spoke, internally cringing at the slight wobble in his voice. “And you said red roses mean love.”
There was a very brief moment in-between the words sinking in and Eugene reacting that Snafu was sure he made a mistake. The moment and fear only lasted a beat before Eugene was kissing Snafu, before he was whispering those three words against his lips, before Snafu was grinning against Eugene’s lips because he had never in his life been so happy before.
They stayed there, parked outside Eugene’s therapist for an untold amount of time, both so deeply unwilling to break away from each other. They only moved when Eugene’s stomach growled at an embarrassing noise level, reminding them both that they had dinner plans already in place.
“You know I don’t even own a vase,” Eugene admitted a few minutes later as they stopped at a red light.
“What?” Snafu responded, sure he misheard him; turning his head, Snafu found Eugene staring intently at the flowers in his lap, soft smile playing on his lips.
“I have ones in the shop for arrangements or for customers but I just don’t have one,” Eugene responded, looking up at him and shrugging lightly, unconcerned.
“What kind of florist doesn’t own a fucking vase?” Snafu teased lightly.
“I dunno, Mer. I guess I just never personally get flowers.”
“Well I’ll get’chu one while we’re out,” Snafu decided firmly, warm smile stretching wide across his face.
“I can just trim the stems a little and use a glass or something.”
“That ain’t right,” Snafu declared as the light turned green and he refocused on the road ahead of him. “You need a real vase, Eugene.”
“Why?” Eugene asked with a slight scoff. “Am I gonna get a lot of use out of it?”
“Yeah,” Snafu announced confidently, deciding in that moment that he would always without fail buy Eugene flowers, not only when he needed help saying what was on his mind but because he always wanted to see that bright smile on his face. “Yeah, you will.”
