ok so i'm calling this princess!fray au even though it isn't an au just kind of a concept. but the concept is what if fray wasn't orphaned, what her life would have looked like. [her mother's title is 'princess' and she would have eventually had that title after her mother basically retired.] so this drawing is of her at about age 8 or so, with her parents.

the child prodigy is Lyric! I'm going to post a drawing of them soon :) they're 13 but very smart, and sometimes kinda unsettling in how much they Do Not act childish. before Lyric was born, their older sister Dimitreya died at age 10 from Inheritance sickness. [don't worry, the post about Inheritances is still coming soon, I just wanted to get this one posted first.] she stayed around as a ghost, and kind of attached to Lyric once they were born. she can't easily move things or become visible or do other stuff that ghosts attached to a location can do more easily, but Lyric can see her, and she can talk to them in their dreams. she helps them plan things!

Lyric's parents used to be some of basically the least shitty nobles there were, and would take in and offer shelter / protection / a job to anyone who asked, regardless of what the person might have done, as long as they were like chill while living there and weren't an actual terrible person. [in this society, being a criminal of any sort can pretty much prevent a person from getting any kind of job that Doesn't involve more crimes... it's kind of a slippery slope even for ppl who aren't already Good At Violence like Sterling.] they were well-respected without trying to be powerful, but unfortunately made some enemies, and ended up getting murdered. [dw, none of the other main characters were involved in that.] Lyric was physically unhurt but was very emotionally fucked up for a while. they still continued their parents' legacy of offering shelter n shit, and that's how they met Fray.

like Lyric, Fray is an orphan, although she doesn't remember her family. for as long as she can remember, she had been living on the streets, stealing to survive, and lighting things on fire for fun. and she was good at it! but things suddenly got very different for her when - after an encounter with what she didn't know was a baby deer - she started growing antlers. this caused a bit of a problem because, even though she was able to hide them under a [big and fancy... and stolen] hat at first, it made her very recognizable and unable to use like half the hiding spots she'd previously had. she'd heard about Lyric's parents, though, so she decided to see if she could stay at their place. they weren't there, of course, but Lyric was, and he let her live there.

despite her chaotic nature, Fray can be very motherly when she needs to be, and she pretty much adopted Lyric. [she's somewhere around age 20 at this point if I'm remembering things right [can't be bothered to check the doc rn], although she doesn't know exactly how old she is.] with her help and care, Lyric is able to cope with their parents' death, and they start learning about things that have been happening in the world since then. they feel that someone needs to do something to make it a less shitty place, and since they're a noble and could have some influence if they tried and had the power, they decide to be that someone. and, based on the events that they learn about, and what their cousin Wren has been telling them about a certain someone she's met, they start Making Some Plans...
