jay’s perspective

She didn’t fight it not like I really expected her to but… what did e/n mean by murderer? How did the two even know each other? I’ve been left confused and questioning it as I found myself in the same cycle my life has been. With fancy clothes, jewelry, fancy food… and yet I was just a temporary trophy.

It felt pathetic. 

“Back to being a part of the upper class huh?” I heard Sunghoon sitting next to me. He was someone I knew for a brief amount of time. Some would say he was… a nice guy before his owner got amnesia. 

Sunoo… a poor fox hybrid who wants to please his owner he was severely abused. He was kind and kept to himself but he defended Sunghoon sometimes. That made me believe there was more to the famous snow leopard. 

Someone better than the bully to everyone, even his owner. 

“Do you know why I hate you, bird?” he asked and I shook my head. “y/n and e/n were best friends with my owner a long time ago” he said and I was shocked at the revelation. e/n never would associate herself with… someone who wasn’t in the same financial class as her. 

“y/n was from a well-off family before getting disowned for what they did–” disowned? “e/n though… deserves all the karma y/n got as well. I don’t like either of them let that be clear but there are rumors about you, you oversized chicken” he said and I scoffed. 

“Since y/n was keen on adopting you e/n is now keeping you to spite her” he said and I let my eyes widen. “And where did you hear that?” I asked and he chuckled. “Rumors, I don’t know if it's true but… it does piss me off,” he said and I wondered…

“What did they do?” I asked and his facial expressions turned to hatred. He looked at me with sad but vengeful eyes… 

“Almost killed my owner”

y/n’s perspective

I just had to continue my life as I did before. 

Study and become someone worthy of forgiveness. Someone who helps people… it's why I changed my major after all/ I want to help people as a doctor to atone for my sins.

To finally be able to face her again. 

“You need to take a break” Haechan begged for what it felt like the hundredth time. “I’m sorry for forcing you but I wanted you to get better,” he said and I didn’t want to listen. “It’s fine… I know my limits. I don't need someone taking care of me” I said and he sighed.

“But you do… you're self-destructing. You need to learn to forgive yourself… she already has” she said and I scoffed. “She’s an idiot who doesn’t remember anything! She can’t forgive me if she doesn’t remember what I did!” I yelled and he sighed. 

“You’ve been punished already… you’re just punishing yours;more besides you weren’t completely at fault. You weren’t the only one there” he said and I felt tears blur my vision. 

“But I could’ve stopped it…” I muttered. “You weren’t the one who organized it… you were framed and you couldn’t do anything again e/n. You’re a better person now than before… just please remember you need to calm down and try to accept what happened– What really happened and try to forgive yourself” he said and I sighed. 

“Haechan… I really liked having company for once” I admitted and he smiled. “Jay is complicated but I think he liked you. He just protects himself from getting hurt… like you” he said and I sighed and even let out a chuckle. 

“When did you become mature?” I teased and he scoffed. “Oi! I have always been this way!”

I wanted Jay back… he was nice for the one time he was and now that I look at it through Haechan’s clarity… he was pushing me away like how I did everyone I met when I first crumbled from where I stood. 

I knew though I couldn’t get him back… I had to accept it and move on. 

“Ah! y/n!” I heard someone who made my blood run cold. “Huh? What are you doing?!” I heard the angry snow leopard. “It's been a while! How have you been!” she asked with that same smile… she was also too innocent and sweet to be around me and e/n.

“G-good how’s the… treatments going?” I asked and I noticed people now staring and gossiping around us. She smiled brightly though…

“Good! Sunghoon helps a lot!” she said and I was glad. “Sunghoon said you had a hybrid–” “Not anymore” he muttered, cutting her off to look at me sadly. “Oh… sorry I must’ve forgotten,” she said and I shook my head. 

“No… it's not your fault” I said and she nodded softly. “I hope you’re taking care of yourself?” she asked and I chuckled. “I should be saying that,” I said and she smiled. “Well, let's make that promise together huh?” she asked and all I could do was smile.

“Sunghoon has a bit of training in the ice rink so I have to go but please don’t forget to take care of yourself… and maybe we can hang out again?” she asked I smiled and said sure and our goodbyes. My throat felt tight knowing I lied to her… 

I couldn’t let myself be in her life again. 

Not when I know I ruined her social life… and humiliated her… and caused her disease. Not directly but I was there and I could’ve stopped it. I should’ve stopped it when she asked me to help her… 

“Who do you think you are talking to?” I heard and saw e/n… with Jay by her side. “She came up to me… I was just being nice” I said and she scoffed.

“I don't know how you can wake up in the morning knowing you did that to her… it should’ve been you in the forest that night,” she said and I sighed… “Maybe… or maybe it should've been you,” I said and she scoffed and started yelling at me. It wasn't all my fault I knew that…

Sure I helped… but I didn’t plan it and besides I didn’t know half the things she did to her. 

“See Jay… I saved you from her. She ruins the lives of people around her” she said and I sighed… “Whatever e/n,” I said and left her. I was at least bettering myself… she will never have the chance to. 

I was at least studying and doing my best to be someone worthy of her forgiveness. Not someone who will never change and ruin and belittle others for the rest of her life. 

Funny when I was the one by her side protecting her from mean bullies and pranks when in the end she was no better than those who bullied her. And endless cycle…

That will unfortunately never change. 

jay’s perspective

I tried and learned everything that had happened. 

Sunghoon’s owner was always known as sweet and kind. However, she associated herself with two queen bees. Both may be as bad as each other but as they grew up she improved. Though others will always blame her for it… I didn’t think someone in their position could change but she really was.

I heard things like she volunteers a lot and she’s on the honor roll. Before all she would do was party and… just live the life e/n did but now she truly was trying to make a name for herself on her own.

So much that she would often not take care of herself which is why Mark and Haechan thought a hybrid would be a good idea in the first place. 

“I don’t even know why she would want a hybrid? Her parents never allowed it calling them icky and failed experiments anyway” e/n said to her group of friends.

While many people thought hybrids were luxurious there were some who thought otherwise and saw them lower as humans that shouldn’t even be in the same room as them…

“I guess now that her parents disowned her she’s wanted one I guess but she never mentioned it” she continued with a slight daydreaming expression. “Didn't you guys used to be like bffs” the girls laughed but she didn’t

“Yeah until she did something unforgivable! Only monsters do things like that!” she laughed but it almost seemed forced. 

“Anyways see ya!” she said as I followed her but she stopped abruptly to look at me with a glare. “What was it like? Being under her care?” she asked with crossed arms and I shrugged. “Was she as clumsy and stupid as ever?” she smirked and I said nothing until she sighed.

“She rarely takes care of herself right? It's all I ever hear” she muttered and I nodded. “I see… well Jay! You’re not what I want… in fact, I don’t think I even want a hybrid too much work and I never get my privacy after all” she said as she started walking… 

What was she on about? We walked until I realized we were at the cafeteria somewhere she’d never eaten…

“Oh? Didn’t think she’d be here… ugh and asleep? How low Cinderella has fallen~” she taunted as I saw Mark, Haechan, and Chenle…

“Well, Jay is all hers… I’ll get some of his stuff I don’t need any more hybrids things after all ~,” she said as she took off my collar and threw it on the table and it seemed to wake y/n up. 

“Huh?!” she let out and e/n laughed. “Careful your mask is falling,” Chenle said and she scoffed. “Whatever… buh-bye!” she said and left… but she looked back and tried to look at her reaction… maybe she did care a little after all.

“What is happening?” she asked as the boys laughed. “Looks like you’re stuck with each other again,” Haechan said as he gave my collar to her. 

Would she even accept me again after how mean I was? “But… Jay said he didn’t–” “I do! I want to be your hybrid!” I said this time being truthful… when would I have the second chance like I do now to… finally be with someone who could appreciate me?

“Y-you do?” she asked flustered and I smiled… “Well, the two of you have lots to talk about and I need to pick someone up from the airport” Chenle said as he waved goodbye. “We should go too!” Mark said and Haechan looked confused… “Huh? We don’t have anything–” “Yes we do!” he said leaving us alone. 

“Do you really mean it?”

y/n’s perspective

“Niki, we always do this” I whined as he locked himself in the bathroom. I needed to get him ready for tonight’s party. If I didn’t have to go I wouldn’t… but with my family pushing me into choosing a major in business, they're making me befriend other kids who are from wealthy families. 

“Please… I don’t want to go alone” I begged but he didn’t respond. It was running late and the driver was gonna be here soon… so I might have to go alone today. 

I gave up trying to convince him and I went to do the final touches. Grabbing a jacket, fixing my makeup, and grabbing everything I needed. 

When I left my room, I couldn’t help but smile. 

“You’re gonna go with me?” I asked and he nodded. “I can’t let you go on your own” he muttered and I chuckled. “Besides, look at how forgetful you are,” he said as he pulled my hair roller off my bangs. “Oh,” I said genuinely forgetting as he laughed at me. 

“Do you–” “Yes, I have my tail ring on. I’m ready, now let's go before your dad starts calling”

Riki Nishimura was a stray hybrid I met when I was a kid. We were on a vacation trip to Japan when I saw him. I offered him some food I had on me and he took it from me to eat it like he was starved. 

My parents were already wanting to get me a hybrid so I begged them to keep him. In which they reluctantly agreed. However, when we found out he wasn’t a normal black cat hybrid they agreed. 

He was a panther hybrid and has been with me for years. We grew up together… However, my parents never liked how rowdy he was. Even now they tell me to get another hybrid, one that could join me in dinners, parties, and one who is overall more well-behaved. 

I wasn’t gonna let them replace him. He was my best friend, my number one confidant. Besides… who needs a fancy and well-behaved hybrid? Niki was way more fun!

niki’s perspective

It was the same old party they threw with the same kids as their rich human parents and new collectibles. They liked to collect new hybrids where they’d show them off and then throw them away… but not y/n. 

Without her, I probably would still be mistaken for an overgrown cat hybrid on the street. It doesn’t mean I liked being gawked at and set a price on what they’d trade her for me. Of course, she’d never let them... I’ve seen how annoyed and angry she gets and it made me happy she cared so much. 

I cared for her too… She was clumsy and an idiot so she needed someone to take care of her. So I'm here… at a stupid party filled with spoiled rich kids. 

Not to say she isn't spoiled… she is. However, I never questioned that she loved me. She always makes that clear with everything she does for me. 

“Oh! You’re y/n right?” I heard and I saw a girl behind us with what smelled like a bird hybrid. “Mmhm… have we met before?” she asked why I didn’t think so… I would’ve recognized her and her hybrid. “My name–”

I didn’t care what she had to say… I just didn’t like how her hybrid kept on staring at me with those eyes of his. What was his problem?

I was cut off from my thoughts when suddenly the topic of discussion became me… 

“He’s really pretty and exotic too! I just haven’t heard good things about him, you know?” she said and I had to refrain from growling at her. Who was she to talk right in front of my face about me? And to y/n?

“Jay here is well-behaved! He’s from America you know–” Is that supposed to make him impressive? Congrats bird you’re a pet! “–it's just a shame you know. I wanted a bunny or maybe a cat hybrid” she pouted and I could see his disappointed expression. 

“Oh, Niki is really sweet but he’s solitary–” “You should invest in a social hybrid you know?” she cut her off to say. Rude… why would she need another hybrid when she has me?

“I like the way he is, he’s been with me since we were kids so there's no way I could ever replace him like that,” she said and I felt proud. 

“I heard about how much you care for him. I guess rumors were true” she said and I knew she was amongst those who talked about why she couldn’t get a nicer and social hybrid who smiles and dotes on her. I do dote on her… and I’m only nice to her. Everyone else was pushing it. 

“What is he if I can ask?” she said and y/n only sighed while looking up at me. “He’s a puma hybrid from Japan,” she answered. “Woah! I heard puma hybrids were rare! I thought he was just a cat… makes sense then for how tall he is.” she said as she got closer to me. 

“Oh please don’t do that. You’ll make him uncomfortable.” y/n said as I went behind her. 

“You should take him to the training you know. It's for the hybrids who need manners… they are opening classes in your university for hybrids'' she said… she stalked y/n to know what university she was in? She needs a life. 

“Oh… I know of them. I think he is just fine the way he is” y/n said and she bowed. “If you’ll excuse us,” she said and we walked away from the pair. “She was a bitch” y/n muttered and I laughed.

“Calm down, you have an act to uphold,” I said and she sighed. “y/n?” I said and she looked at me with her eyes filled with determination to answer to give me anything I asked for. “Why didn’t you tell me your uni is having hybrid classes?” I asked and she sighed. 

“They're mainly about etiquette. She said how to take care of your owner… how to behave in a social setting, etc” and I nodded. 

“I want to go,” I said and her eyes widened. “But you're perfect–” “No, I’m not… I caused you a lot of trouble. I heard your dad get mad again this morning. He didn’t want me here because of last time” I said and she shook her head. 

“Yah! Don’t do that!” she scolded and I smiled softly. 

“Please? You said you would give me anything I asked for. I want to be a better hybrid for you” 

“I can’t believe I'm agreeing to this,” she said and I smiled. “Thank you for letting me do this,” I said and she sighed. “I hate that the class requires collars though. I would’ve rather you had the tail ring instead” she complained and I chuckled.

“You’ll do great in your midterm, okay? Don’t worry about me” I said as I kissed her cheek. “After we’ll go for some Japanese food,” she said and I grinned. “Takoyaki!” I yelled and she chuckled. “I’ve been craving some curry udon,” she said and I nodded. 

“I’ll do my best for you,” I said and she smiled. “You already are. Don’t change, okay?” she asked and I nodded. I just wanted to improve for her… 

When I entered I was immediately overwhelmed with the many scents of hybrids. I ignored the stares of the familiar scents and went down into the big lecture room. 

I sat down in the middle of the third to first row, not expecting others to approach me. “Ah! I’m not late!” I heard as I saw a Golden

A Retriever hybrid suddenly entered… he didn’t have a collar nor the scent of a domesticated hybrid. He grinned at me and I suddenly regretted staring… “I’m Jake, and you are?” he said as he approached me and sat next to me.

I heard the laughs around us, probably of me socializing with another hybrid. “Riki,” I said and he nodded. “I think your collar is cool!” he said and I chuckled. “Of course it is, I chose it,” I said and he looked confused. 

“Your owner must be kind,” he said with a wagging tail and I chuckled. “Hey, isn’t that miss l/n’s hybrid?” I suddenly heard a bunch of whispers and I sighed and slouched down to my chair. 

“Oh? Do they know you?” he asked and I scoffed. “Don’t get it mixed up, they know OF me, they don’t know me” I said and he nods 

“They seem to know your owner,” he said and I scoffed. “They don’t know her…” I muttered. “Is she nice?” he asked and I laughed. 

“She’s perfect” 

y/n's perspective

“I thought you were going home after?” I heard and I saw Wonyoung with Seonghwa. I nod, “I do, I just need to pick up Niki, he’s taking etiquette classes,” I said and they both froze. “Your dad is making him take classes?” Wonyoung said and I chuckled. 

“No, he wanted them for whatever reason. I tried to convince him otherwise but he insisted” I said and they both looked at each other. “Oh shut up the both of you,” I said and they chuckled as they caught up with me. 

“He’s so spoiled if you just fold like that,” Seonghwa added and I scoffed. “You do spoil that cat a lot” Wonyoung teased and I rolled my eyes. “Have you told Hongjoong–” “He would kill me in my sleep if I ever brought it up” Seonghwa cut me off and I chuckled… that's true. 

We finally made it to the building where the hybrid classes are taking place but I didn’t see Niki… I saw the hybrids out already so where was he? 

“How long is it gonna take for him to come to you?” Wonyoung asked and I didn’t know. I looked at my phone, and the class should’ve already ended by now. “Why’d you even allow it?” Soenghwa asked and I sighed. 

“Cause he wouldn’t let go of it. He begged and begged… I couldn’t keep denying it” I said and they sighed. “She’s whipped for him, that's the answer,” Wonyoung said and Seonghwa nodded. 

“Oh? y/n!!” I heard as I saw the girl from the party again with her hybrid. What was her name again?

“You’re Wonyoung and Seonghwa, right? I’m e/n” she said. “I’m glad to see you’re having Niki taking this class,” she said and I sighed. “His name is Riki,” I said and she looked confused. “Oh? But you call him Niki?” she asked.

“That's a nickname that she only calls him, he will glare or even scoff if he hears you call him that,” Seonghwa said and it was true… I've called him that since I was a kid and yet he never let anyone else call him that. “This class should teach him otherwise,” she said and I had to refrain from scoffing. 

“Oh, you should look into a secondary hybrid,” she said and I glared. 

“I wouldn’t get another one,” I clarified. “Riki would get too jealous,” “Or he’d kick the other hybrid out himself,” Wonyoung and Seonghwa added. 

“But if you were to get one he’d have to comply with her. She’s the owner,” she said and I shook my head. “Well, I was thinking of something cute… maybe a fox? Ooh or a pretty cat!” she said while looking at herself in a pocket mirror fixing her lipstick while her hybrid looked at her with a sad expression.

“I wanna go home” I suddenly heard. Niki? 

“Why do you have scratches on your face? Are you okay?” I asked and he avoided eye contact when I grabbed his jaw to look at his wounds. He nodded, “I wanna go home” he repeated and I sighed. 

“Ok, just let me take this off,” I said as I took off his collar and took out his tail ring. “Riki!! You forgot… Oh. Please don’t be mad at him! He was only defending me!!” I saw a dog hybrid yell while he held Niki’s backpack. Seonghwa grabbed it, holding it for me. 

“Please, it's all my fault. Don’t abandon him because of me!” he pleaded and even bowed. I looked at Niki who looked away. “Why would I abandon you? Niki, what happened?” I asked and the other hybrid soon stood up but looked down to my hands. His collar? I sighed and turned Niki around when I clipped his tail ring. “Thank you for caring about him but he’s not in trouble. You should find your owner, they must be worried about you–” “He’s a stray” I was interrupted by e/n.

A stray? “Did you see? It's why they make the hybrids wear collars because they need to know by the end of the class who is a stray and who is owned. It's a mixture of people like us who pay and hybrids of low status who need major help like him. He’s probably also a runt” she said suddenly in disgust as she stepped back.

“Thank you for looking after Niki,” I said and he nodded with a small smile. I grabbed the backpack from Seonghwa as I looked at him and I saw his worried eyes. “Come on, I'm hungry,” I said as I dragged him away from the lecture hall and everyone else while I heard Wonnie and Seonghwa complain about me abandoning them…

“I still want that udon curry,” I pondered and he sighed. He grabbed his backpack and clipped his collar there as he walked silently. “Did you fight for him?” I asked and he nodded silently.

I smiled. “That’s very kind of you,” I said and from the corner of my eye, he looked at me confused. “What were they doing to him?” I asked and he sighed. “Called him a runt… a stray… useless. It was all when the teacher left for a break and I don’t know why I did but I fought for him” he said and I smiled. 

“That was very brave of you. I’m proud of you Niki!” I said with a grin and he smiled softly. “The teacher gave me a warning cause he said if he told you that you’d return me,” he said and I chuckled. “We’ve been together for years! I could never do that” I said and he nodded. 

“Still want takoyaki?” I asked and he chuckled. “Always!” he yelled as he ran ahead of me. 

“HEY!! NO FAIR!! YOU HAVE LONGER LEGS!!”

y/n’s perspective

“y/n come on help me a little,” Chenle said and I refused to go home. “You normally don’t drink a lot and you always want to make it home to that cat,” he said, making my vision blurry. 

“No no no, don't cry again!” he said and I couldn’t stop my sobs.  “Niki doesn’t trust me” I muttered and I heard a sigh. “That cat loves you more than everything,” he said and I shook my head. 

“He thinks I'm like the hybrid collectors… maybe he even sees me like my dad” I slurred. Suddenly I feel myself being lifted. “Come on, tighten your grip,” he said as he was giving me a piggyback ride. 

“Riki loves you so much. We’ve all seen how much he does… I don’t know what he said to make you think otherwise but remember you’ve been by each other’s side for years” he said and I knew what he meant. 

My heart just hurts a little thinking back on what he said. I forgot my phone when I went back to get it when I heard him say I might do the same… to dump and replace him.

“y/n!!” I heard the familiar voice and instead of reaching out to him, I tightened my grip on Chenle. “Oh come on y/n!  Please… did our talk not do anything?” he pleaded and I refused to look at Riki. “Is she okay?” I heard the familiar voice say. Who was that again?

“You need to remember how sensitive she is,” I heard Chenle scold. “What? What happened?” I heard. “Down you go,” he said as I felt the comfy sheets. 

“Get out Riki… let her sleep. You’ve made her cry enough” 

niki’s perspective

Chenle, one of her friends, dropped her off. It was two in the morning when she came back. I called when it hit midnight worried as to why she didn’t send a message or call. 

She left her phone here… I had to call until Chenle said he’d look for her. She smelled so strongly of alcohol… and she didn’t want to see me. Why? What had happened? 

“This is good for hangovers,” Jay said as he held a tea. “When are you going home?” I asked and he sighed. “I’m supposed to get picked up at the classes,” he said and I sighed. “We should check on her,” he said and I didn’t want to open the door. 

She was upset because of me… but why?

He opened the door anyway despite me sitting in front of it. He took the tea and left it at her side. Her cheeks looked puffy and those clear tear-stained marks on her cheek were making her face red... 

I stood up to get a closer look. 

“Why is she upset with you?” he asked and I ignored him. Instead, I sat by her bed waiting for her to wake up. “If you're the reason she’s upset maybe you shouldn’t be the first thing she wakes up to,” he said and I sighed. 

Why was she upset? What did I even do?

I soon heard her bed creak meaning she got up. I wanted so badly to go in there and ask what was wrong. I soon instead saw the door open. She was dressed in her school uniform with a jacket over her blazer. 

“y/n–” “A driver will take both of you to your classes” She cut me off and walked away. We always went together… It was on the way to her classes. 

“It's still early for your class though! Maybe you should–" "Wonyoung and I are going to get something on the way… make sure to eat though. The chef will be here soon.” she said as she put her shoes on and closed the door. 

She’s been awake for not even an hour. 

Why was she already avoiding me?

y/n’s perspective 

That doesn’t sound like the Riki we know,” Wonyoung said and Seonghwa agreed next to her.

“He said it… he doubts me enough to say that,” I said, still sad he would ever think I’d do that to him…

“I heard Chenle took you home?” Seonghwa asked and I nodded. “I’ll need to thank him,” I said and they nodded. “At least he was there… he often takes care of his best friend so you were in good hands,” Seonghwa said. “The one in China,” Wonyoung clarified.

“I’m surprised you still wanted to pick him up today…” Seonghwa added and I sighed. “I babysat Jay… I need to apologize to him” I said and they nodded.

A bunch of hybrids came out until I saw mine… instead of approaching him, I went to Jay when I saw him.

“I’m sorry you witnessed my tantrum… I should’ve been taking care of you instead” I said and he shook his head. “It’s okay, no need to apologize… I was fine, Riki, he's worried about you” he said and I smiled. “Don't worry” “I know a fake smile when I see it” he said and I chuckled. I really did feel bad for him.

“y/n! Was he good?” I heard as I saw his owner now approach us. “Yeah… the best,” I hesitated not knowing what to say and she grinned. “Oh great! Thank you again so much. It must've been hard with Riki” she said and I shook my head… 

She said her goodbyes and I went off to where Seonghwa and Wonyoung were talking to Riki.

“y/n!” He said almost weary… “How was class?” I asked and he sighed… “Boring as always,” he said and an awkward silence took over.

“The driver will take you back home. I’m gonna have another dinner.” I said as I was texting Chenle inviting him as a thank you. 

“Oh… can I go?” He asked softly. He looked at me expectantly and I shook my head. “I doubt you’d like it. The driver will be here soon, okay?” I said as he nodded. 

He looked disappointed… 

I know I told him I was leaving. I should’ve… but I looked back to where he was. Seonghwa and Wonyoung trying to talk to him. 

He had a tight grip on his tail as he looked down. Did I upset him? I didn’t want to… but how was I supposed to feel?

niki’s perspective

“It’s just dinner with Chenle and I think his friends. Don’t worry, there won’t be alcohol” Wonyoung explained and I couldn’t help but feel upset.

“What did I do wrong?” I muttered and they sighed. “Did you notice she forgot her phone yesterday?” Seonghwa asked and I nodded my head… I assumed she did since she didn’t pick up her phone but I wouldn’t have heard it in the apartment either way, she always left it on vibrate.

“She was gonna go get it and she heard what your true opinion of her was,” he said and I was confused.

“Riki, you think she’ll abandon you one day,” Wonyoung said and I shook my head “I didn’t mean it like that… is that what she thinks?!” I said now I panicked. They instead sighed and stayed silent. 

The slick black car now in my view… 

“You know how she is. She’s sensitive… and what you said destroyed her mood yesterday. All she did was drink champagne and wine. She didn’t even talk to anyone…” Wonyoung said and I felt guilty.

“But I didn’t mean it that way. I- what else did she hear?! I swear what I said shouldn’t have made her hate me” I said and they shook their heads.

“She can’t hate you… she cares about you too much,” Seonghwa said and I was confused. What I said… Did she hear my whole conversation? I didn’t say anything to make her upset with me… right? When would she let me explain myself… she’ll be stuck in her head and be an overthinker like always.

I didn’t think badly of her… even that hawk can testify. 

y/n’s perspective

“You didn’t have to, you know?” Chenle said and I offered him a smile. “You didn’t have to take care of me, so thank you,” I said and he chuckled. “It was nice of you to invite Jisung with us,” he said as Jisung smiled awkwardly. 

“She’s a lot nicer than her” I heard Jisung mutter and I laughed. I knew about who they were talking about. Chenle’s childhood best friend was currently studying abroad in China. She��s also the daughter of the principal. 

“Can I ask why you were so upset?” Chenle asked to which I sighed. “Just some hybrid stuff,” I said and he nodded. “How is owning such a problematic hybrid?” he asked and I chuckled. “He’s not… he’s just not made for the parties and snarky comments I get, he’s very protective of me,” I said and he nodded. “I heard he’s often picking fights,” he added and I smiled. 

“I wished he made more of an effort to befriend others,” I said and he laughed. “You’re reminding me of our friend now,” Jisung said and I laughed. 

“Though I do hope you don’t make an effort to get drunk,” Chenle said and I chuckled. “I’m sorry again… I don’t usually do that” I said and he shook his head. “Don’t worry about it… we usually take care of one of our friends when she gets drunk” he said and I nodded. 

“She never invites us to eat like this though,” Jisung said with a mouth full of rice. “I'm jealous… you must be really close with her” I said and they chuckled. 

“She’s like our little sister” 

I was dropped off home to the apartment where I dreaded going but I had to face it eventually. 

I went in when I smelled burned food. I also heard Japanese and assumed it was a YouTube video Riki was watching. I went deeper inside to see him frantically move around the kitchen with his AirPods and… was watching a video on how to make bungeoppang.

Our favorite and first thing we get when we go to Japan. It was followed by sudden swear words in Japanese. He turned around in frustration and looked like he was gonna smack the pan on the counter but stopped when he saw me. 

I laughed at the sight.

“I… tried making you something… but we don’t have the right flour,” he said pouting and I smiled. “We can order–” “I wanted to do something special for you!” he defended and I smiled. “Thank you,” I said and he frowned. It was awkward…

“How was your day!? I invited Chenle and Jisung for a thank you lunch…” I said with a smile hoping to just ignore my insecurity. “Horrible,” he said and I frowned. 

“You came home… drunk, you're never drunk and then I'm told because I made you cry?—” he was now pacing and ranting… I couldn’t cut him off, he needed to get everything out… “–Then you storm off without an explanation for your friends to tell me because you think that I think you’ll abandon me one day? And even now! I burned the bungeoppang!” he yelled, frustrated. 

“I don’t know what you heard… but you're misunderstanding things, stop overthinking and ask me what I think of you” he scolded and I sighed… 

“Then, what do you think of me, Riki?”

niki perspective 

I can’t believe I let those stupid people make me doubt her.

That was very stupid. But it was now the second day and she reassured me that I could quit anytime. I heard several whispers when I entered. They thought I would be punished and didn’t expect me to come back here unscathed.

“Doesn’t it make sense though? His owner never punishes him” I soon heard. Oh, how I loved her. “You're here?!” the dog hybrid said. “I was worried your owner must return or punish you,” he said and I smiled. “She isn’t like that. She said I did the right thing” I said happily and he was shocked.

“That's not how you’re supposed to act though! You’re supposed–” “Yeah I know but I promised her I wouldn't change because of these lessons. I'm just here to act properly at parties, that's it. Not because she’s forcing me,  don’t have to impress anybody” I said and he was confused. 

I know everyone would be different. I’m an exception. I have the best owner out of everyone. 

“You’re lucky,” he said and I smiled. “I know” 

I learned his name was Jake. He was recently rescued from the streets when he was abandoned very young. I don’t remember much of my life on the streets or prior. All I know is my life with her. 

The class was finished without anything wrong this time. Maybe I can convince her to go to the convenience store today. 

“Niki!” I heard and I scoffed. “Yah! It's Riki” I said as I saw the Hawk hybrid approach me. He was wearing designer clothes with a jeweled collar. “What do you want?” I asked and he scoffed. “I’m older than you. You should show me more respect,” he said and I rolled my eyes. “Hmm. What year are you Riki?” Jake asked and I answered with ‘2005’. 

“I’m older than you too!!” he said and I scoffed. “Our owners want us to be friends,” he said and I laughed. “Yeah right. y/n knows I’m not interested in making friends” I said and he clicked his tongue before grabbing the back of my collar. 

“Hey!!” I said as I tried pushing him off. “How do you get away with everything? I heard stories of what you’ve done and she still keeps you around?” he said and I scoffed. 

“She’s not like your owner!” I corrected and I would’ve had the nerve to scratch him away but… he was from that girl who seemed to have a good status that would get y/n in trouble. 

“Yah! Let him go” I heard and I saw the familiar overgrown tiger. “Who are you?” I heard him ask and he scoffed. “Someone who isn't scared to hurt the pretty little bird,” he said while the Hawk let me go. “Come on you’ve kept her waiting long enough,” he said and I followed Hongjoong. 

“There's no way you’re forcing me here,” the tiger told his owner and y/n laughed. 

“Hongjoong was sick of waiting,” she sighed and I chuckled. “Oh, Jay! e/n  asked me to watch you for today. She’ll pick you up tomorrow,” she said and I was confused. “What?!” I yelled and she smiled softly. 

“She’s on a trip right now. Her dad asked mine and here we are” she explained and I sighed. It was a request from him.

“No trouble today?” she asked me and I shook my head. “The black cat is bad luck y/nnie,” Hongjoong said and I glared. “It was worth a try,” Seonghwa said to her and she smiled. “Trust me Hongjoong. If Niki didn’t want to attend I wouldn't have him do it” she said and he smiled. “I know, he’s just stupid, '' he said and I glared at him. 

“Remember, for dinner you can’t say no,” Seonghwa said. Today was her monthly dinner with her friends AND she was babysitting the stupid hawk?!

 “y/n I wanted to go to the convenience store today,” I said, still wanting to stock up on snacks… especially if he's gonna be with us. “Niki, you should eat a proper meal tonight,” she said and I pouted. “You’re not even gonna be here which means the chef won't come by tonight,” I said and she sighed. 

“Fine you win”

jay’s perspective

Riki was a strange hybrid. He was wild and crazy… and had so many horror stories that the two were the talk of hybrid talk in gatherings.

y/n was just as maybe even more strange. She was the only child of a very wealthy businessman. Everyone wanted to be in her good graces… but the hybrid she owns doesn't match her personality. He’s too much trouble. 

Seeing her outside of the fancy clothes and jewelry though… She was the same as him. Both are childish despite their status. 

“That's not true, take it back!” he said as she shook her head trying not to laugh as they argued which is the best kimbap flavor. 

They already had a full basket and are now on their second. “Jay do you want anything?” she asked me and I shook my head. “Then starve tonight,” Riki said and y/n hit him playfully. “I’m going out tonight and there isn't much food at my apartment so please choose something,” she said. I had never eaten this kind of food before. 

Ramyeon… tteokbokki… frozen chicken? This is bad for my diet. 

“You’ve never had this type of food before have you?” Riki asked as y/n looked over the candy. “It's not a part of my food plan,” I said and he rolled his eyes. “Just get a ramyeon, kimbap, and ice cream and you're set, '' he said as I picked out one called buldak, a random kimbap flavor, and ice cream. I haven't had ice cream since I was in America. 

When she paid Riki still asked if we could get street food. She said yes and I was shocked at just how badly of a diet they had. Or that she even went along with his requests… he asked so carelessly. 

“I've been craving spicy fish cake,” y/n said “Ooh how about Mandu?” Riki suggested. “Ooh! And some chicken skewers!” y/n said and they grinned happily. 

What was this?

“Remember not too eat much. You still have to go to dinner” Riki said and she groaned. “I need street food. They’re planning on drinking” she said and he chuckled. “Be careful, okay?” he asked and she smiled softly and nodded. 

So he did care for her too? 

“Jay, are you sure you don’t want anything?” she asked and I shook my head. She looked disappointed with my response, causing the overgrown cat to roll his eyes. “Eat it, it'll be rude if you don’t,” he said as he handed me a chicken skewer. 

I've never tried Korean street food before… it was famous though amongst tourists and locals. I tried it and was surprised at how good it was. I regret not asking for one now…

Too bad it'll probably be my last time trying it…

We arrived when they dumped all the bags on the counter… they didn't even put it away. He didn’t even offer to help nor did she ask.“Niki showed Jay the guest room,” she said and he nodded as I followed him. It was a very spacious apartment… I don’t think it should even be called an apartment.

I saw my duffel bag. I’m glad she didn’t forget it this time… 

I didn’t know what to do now… stare at another wall I guess? Maybe sleep?

I heard laughing though…  I left my room to see the two putting stuff away. She was in a hoodie and sweatpants with a hair roller on her bangs. Riki is now in a shirt and sweats.

“Oh, Jay! You can use the TV by the way; it has many games. You can ask Niki how to use it” she said. Luckily, I have a PS5 for my entertainment at home. I wasn’t allowed to play certain games though…

“Buldak?” she said as I saw the ramen I chose. “That's Jay’s … he chose it,” Riki said and she nodded while putting it on the counter with the kimbap I chose. “We need to go grocery shopping,” she said and I was confused. “Why don't you have someone do that for you?” I asked and she chuckled. “Cause it's fun!” she said with a grin. “They won’t get us snacks otherwise,” Riki said. 

“Too many snacks are bad for you” I muttered. “y/n, he’s no fun” he whined and she chuckled. “Come on, quit being grumpy,” she said and he playfully huffed. 

“How long have you had Riki?” I asked and she smiled. “Uhm well I was seven and you were eight right Riki?” she asked and he nodded. “So twelve years! We celebrate every December 9 since we don’t know Niki’s exact birthday” she said.

Twelve years? That's such a long time… and only with each other?

“How about you?” she asked and I sighed. “Six months,” I said and she nodded. “Who’s been your longest owner?” she asked… so she did know how people like her were. “Two years,” I said and she sighed. 

“I hope you find a forever home,” she said with a sad smile. “Do you think if you didn’t meet Riki when he was young you’d keep him the way you do now?” I asked and she sighed. “Niki is my number one companion and my best friend. He’s not an object to be sold” she said, a little angry. 

Did I anger her?

“I can finish. Go get ready, yome-chan” he said and she nodded while she left. “Did I offend her?” I asked and he shook his head. “She’s just defensive on the topic,” he said as he put things away for her now. 

“That dog hybrid is right. You’re lucky to have her” I said and he looked at me with possessive eyes. “I’ll be given away soon,” I said and he sighed. “I know I am. She’s stuck with me whether she likes it or not” he muttered. “I think she likes it,” I said and he chuckled. 

There was silence afterward. 

I hate you, Riki. You have a life I would kill for. 

I soon noticed the strong scent of perfume that had faded before. She was in a red dress with the white fur coat she had the other day.

“You forgot this,” he said while pulling out her hair roller. “I’ll be out with Seonghwa, Wonyoung, NingNing, Chenle, and Yeosang,” she said and he nodded. “Pace yourself and eat well, okay?” he asked and she smiled. 

“Bye Nik, Bye Jay!!” she said while Niki helped put her heels and coat on while she left. “Is a bodyguard or a maid coming?” I asked and he shook his head. “No, we wait for when she comes back,” he said as he sat on the couch. 

“You look confused,” he said and I chuckled. “You’re like her friend… you're not even a hybrid for her,” I said and he shrugged. “Maybe one day I’ll finally get someone to keep me like she does with you,” I said and he sighed when he paused his game.

“You won’t have that. Not with the social status you’ve been stamped with. Every one of those stuck-up kids does it to collect, brag, and dump you. They’ll repeat the cycle over and over again” he said now showing his distaste for humans. “What about y/n?” I asked. 

“I don't know… one day she might do the same”

“No,” I said and he sighed. “Please y/n-nie! He needs a home!” Haechan pouted and I scoffed. “Then you take care of him! I don’t have the time to take care of a hybrid…” I muttered and he chuckled.

“Which is exactly why you need one… he's very low maintenance, actually he can take care of himself. I think you need someone to take care of you” he said and I sighed… 

“I don’t need anyone to take care of me,” I said and he sighed… “Have you eaten today?” he asked and I sighed. “I didn’t have the time… I was studying–” “You’re always studying… Jay can help take care of you” he suggested and I shook my head.

“I couldn’t do that to him… he needs a good home,” I said and he smiled. “He’s had so many owners and yet none cared to keep him. All of them had all the money he could ever want…” he said and I sighed… 

“I really need to keep this scholarship, Haechan–” “How about a deal?” he asked and I knew I shouldn’t trust him but anything to make him shut up

“If under your care, you fail your next bio midterm, I'll find someone else… but if you can handle it please show him a good home” he begged and I sighed. “Fine…” I said not knowing what else to do about the whiny junior in front of me. 

“Okay! Let me text Mark that you agreed!” He said and I scoffed. Of course, Mark was also involved… Eventually, he came with a hybrid next to him.

“Ok, Jay here is a bird hybrid so he can only wear collars… he goes to the classes available on campus and Riki the devil hybrid’s lovely angelic owner got a new collar for him because I asked so nicely!” he said and I sighed.. 

“Hey you never know, by adopting a hybrid maybe the principal's daughter will be impressed by you,” Mark said and my eyes widened. “You think?” I asked now hopeful and they chuckled. 

“I don’t get why you admire her so much…” Haechan said and I smiled. “Cause she’s so sweet, and she actually offered the scholarship to me. Without her I wouldn’t be in this school” I said and he sighed.

“Maybe I should ask her to pay my tuition,” Haechan said and Mark laughed. “Good luck, she won’t even pay for Jisung’s meal card, '' he said and I looked at the hybrid who only awkwardly stood there looking at the ground. 

“Hello! I’m y/n… I don’t think I'll be your permanent owner but I’ll try my best in the time we’re together” I said and he nodded. He was really pretty…

“We’ll let you guys get acquainted,” Haechan said as he left us two. “What do you like to do Jay?” I asked and he shrugged. He seemed very silent… this was gonna be very awkward then. “I hope I don’t make you uncomfortable… I do live in a single dorm but it is quite small” I said and he still didn’t say a word. 

Did he hate me already?

I know Haechan said his previous owners were all of the rich kids on campus but… I couldn’t afford the lifestyle they can not anymore, I can only afford this school because of the scholarship I was given another chance with. 

“Jay… I hope we can get along”

jay’s perspective

I can’t believe I got replaced by a mutt and was now left with her… I was still given my classes but this was all ridiculous! So when I saw him walk in front of me with new designer clothes and a new collar more expensive than anything my new temporary owner owns, it pissed me off. 

What did he have that I didn’t?! The puppy looks?!  

“She’s your owner now huh?”  I said when he turned to look at me disappointed to see me… We weren’t exactly friends…

“I hope you enjoy it, she’s a bitch who doesn’t know how to do anything herself. You constantly complain and are gonna make you do so many stupid things just to humiliate you!” I said letting the anger get to me… she really was the worst. All of them were.

“She wouldn’t do that” he muttered and I scoffed, I don’t know I was so angry that I grabbed his shirt enough to get aggressive with him... “You’ve suddenly changed from rags to riches and think it doesn’t come for a price!” I said… funny it's almost like we switched spots. 

“You know nothing about– I knew you were hurt but–” “Why are you suddenly mentioning her?” I asked, now confused… e/n was his owner, wasn’t he? “She adopted me… not like it's any of your business,” he said and I sighed… so she didn’t adopt him? Or did she just beat her to it?

“Is the free trial bird causing you trouble? I would too if I suddenly lost everything and suddenly became a freeloading hybrid!” Sunghoon laughed and I scoffed.

“You shouldn’t be laughing? From what I heard your owner doesn’t even know–""Shut up before I make sure this pretty little bird can’t sing again” he threatened… 

“Sore subject? I wouldn’t want to remember you either, Sunghoon '' I said and he glared not saying anything else as I sat down in a different seat than I normally would. 

First Riki now Jake? They both got the happy endings they want… don’t they? So… what about me?

Where was she? She was late… or did she forget me already? 

“I’m sorry I'm late!” I heard and saw Sunghoon’s owner “I forgot where this place was and–” “Whatever,” Sunghoon said cutting her off… bitter hybrid with a bad reputation

Jake looked at him confused…. He doesn’t know anyone or anything since he’s new and clean from the richest side of things.

“His owner is an amnesiac… everyone thinks he tried to kill her and she just forgot,” I said and Sunoo seemed to disagree… “He’d never do that, they’ve been with each other since kids'' he said and I scoffed 

“What do you know about Sunoo?” I asked and he didn’t answer… it's been years since his owners would play together and in association with him and Sunghoon. They weren’t close anymore… They were strangers, especially because of how isolated Sunoo’s owner was. 

 “Jake!” I heard and saw Jake’s new owner… “You’re late” he teased and she shook her head apologetically  “It took me a while to actually get here from across campus,” she said and the dog hybrid just seemed happy to see her with lovesick honeymoon eyes  “Hmm? Looks like you had company though?” she asked and he said… “Not really”

They left me alone with Sunoo…

“I heard you have a new owner?” he asked me and I scoffed. “She’s more like an incompetent babysitter” I said and he sighed. “Well looks like she’s here to pick you up?” he asked and I looked at where he seemed to be looking… She seemed a little disheartened? Why because I said the truth?

“I’m sorry I'm late… I had a meeting with a counselor but I shouldn’t be late again” 

y/n’s perspective

I know he hates me… an incompetent babysitter seemed about right. 

“I’m really sorry, Haechan thought this was a good idea” I apologized while he stayed silent and didn’t show a reaction to my single bed dorm… “Uhm, I know it's also weird that we’ll be sharing beds” I said and he looked confused. 

“It is the only bed here” I said and he sighed. “I’ll sleep on the floor, just don’t step on me when you wake up” he muttered. “But… we both fit–” “I’ll sleep on the floor” he was adamant. I nod… “Oh! Here, Haechan said that my financial aid covers a hybrid meal card so take care of it please” I asked and he took it and nodded. He didn’t even want to talk to me… I felt guilty as it was that I was his temporary owner but was I this incompetent? 

I guess this is exactly why I didn’t want a hybrid. I couldn’t take care of one… I can only take care of Jay for the time being and study like I was before…

“Yah! What are you even doing on Jeju Island?! I don’t know what Mom and Dad said but… at least answer me?” he was mad but worried… he also sounded tired. 

I wonder if they asked him to look for me. 

I got lucky with online classes this semester. However, the raging headache wasn’t helping to pay attention to the professor. Maybe I needed some food…

I was staying at an apartment for the time being until I found out what I was going to do. “Hmm. Are you going somewhere?” I heard and I smiled. “Yeah, tell Asahi I'll be back soon… if he wakes up before I come back,” I said and he looked worried. 

“I’ll be fine,” I said and he sighed. “It's just… this place is dangerous for you to go alone” Jaehyuk worried and I smiled. “I’ll be back soon,” I said and he nodded as he watched me leave. 

I walked to the convenience store where I noticed a boy… he looked rough. I walked in to get a simple fast meal when I saw the boy from earlier look into the window squinting at the specials today. He was… hungry. 

I grabbed an extra kimbap, ramyeon, and coffee for him when I went outside. He seemed… scared or worried. He looked too young to be on the streets. Maybe… he ran away, like me? He had his hands covering his face making me wonder if he was crying. 

I sighed but placed the kimbap, ramyeon, and coffee in front of him. 

“Ah, oh thank you so much!” he said, and… he was pretty. I wonder how he found himself in this situation. “Are you okay?” I asked and he chuckled. “I will be…” he confirmed and I smiled. “I know how it is… just be careful here okay?” I asked and he nodded. 

“Thank you so much… you’re kind” 

“Yah! I told you how many times?! Never go out by yourself!” I got scolded and I sighed. “I bought breakfast!” I said and he sighed. “Talk to Hyunsuk, y/n. He’s worried sick… he texted me saying you're in Jeju and he wants me to keep on the lookout for you. Tell him” he said and he’s been saying this for days but… I couldn’t confide in Hyunsuk. Not for this. 

“Asahi? Would you just accept what they offered me?” I asked and he sighed. “I think… if I were you I’d do the same and run. But that won’t solve your problem. You only have so much money you can use up. You have to go back eventually” he said and I nodded. 

“I know... If I just want to scare them. They were worried about Hyunsuk when he left… They even told him he could come back and that they were sorry. I want them to apologize to me and to… take that back” I said and he smiled. “I know… eat and study. You can’t fail your classes. I have my internship in an hour so don’t be too much trouble for Jaehyuk '' he warned and I sighed. 

“Shouldn’t it be the other way around?”

“Can we please?!” he begged and I chuckled. “Sure, if you want it that bad '' I said, submitting to buying the lion’s favorite snacks. I know Asahi hates when I go out without him but for good reason… It was dangerous to be roaming around here, especially since it's such a rural area. 

I have Jaehyuk with me… however, despite being a lion, he was the scariest hybrid ever. 

“Hey Jaehyuk, what do you want… for dinner?” I said with my voice trailing off. Where did he go? He was here a second ago?

I looked around for him… he had his collar on. But Asahi had his chip location, not me… where did he go? He couldn’t have gone far?! I felt panicked… I didn’t just lose his hybrid. He means the world to Asahi. 

“Oh? Are you looking for your hybrid?” I heard and I nodded. “Yeah, a lion hybrid? Have you seen him?” I asked and he chuckled. “He went outside, little lady,” he said and I was shocked. “What?” I said before leaving the groceries and going outside. Why would he wander off….

“What’s a lady like you doing out here?” I heard and I sighed. I couldn't care less about this. I need to find Jaehyuk– “It's rude to ignore someone!” he said as he grabbed my arm rather harshly. 

“Let go!” I yelled. He chuckled and I soon saw the guy who told me Jaehyuk was outside walking to us. “Help–” “I was gonna ask that of you. You should help us,” he said… Did he lie to me?

Then Jaehyuk should be inside… fuck. 

“What’s wrong what's with–” “Do you bastards have nothing else better to do than run around and harass women?” I heard… the boy from this morning. “Go away, kid–” “You go away! How much of an incel are you to be grabbing a girl who was simply buying groceries?!” he said and they scoffed. 

“Whatever,” they said and walked off, probably to find someone else to bother. 

“Thank you, and I appreciate all that I do! But I need to find–” “The hybrid you're looking for didn’t even leave the grocery store. I could help you find him if you want?” he offered and I was confused. 

“How did you know?” I asked. He soon looked nervous… “I was trying to find my way to a bus station and was walking here when you ran out of there” he explained and I sighed. 

“I must've looked crazy,” I said and he chuckled. 

“It's honorable how much you care about a hybrid," he said and I was confused. “I mean of course… Even though he isn't mine I love him to pieces. I wouldn't know what to do if I did lose him” I said and he nodded. 

“Come on,” he said as he led me inside and I don’t know where he was leading me if he thought we’d find… Jaehyuk who was standing in front of the candy aisle with his hands grabbing multiple gummy candies. 

I should’ve looked here first… 

“Hey, why are you crying?” the boy asked me and I didn’t realize. “y/n? Are you okay? Who is–” he was suddenly defensive… but I hugged him. “I thought I lost you!” I cried and he chuckled. “I guess I shouldn't have left you. I swore to myself I was gonna be quick,” he said as he patted my head. 

“Where did you find this do–” “Ah! I should get going…” The guy left and I was confused. “Wait! I need to thank you… I mean you helped me from those guys and found him.” I said and he smiled. “No worries… just be safe,” he said and I shook my head. 

“Please?” I asked and he sighed but looked at Jaehyuk almost… scared. “Oh… he’s harmless, trust me. Or… are you allergic?” I asked knowing some people were allergic to feline hybrids. 

“No… I'm not, I just don’t want to intrude” he said and I chuckled. “y/nnie… he’s a h–” “Ok then!” he said and I nodded. “Hmm. What’s around to eat Jaehyuk?” I asked him and he sighed… 

“I don’t know” 

jake’s perspective

She didn’t know I was a hybrid nor did I want her to know. My ears didn’t stand tall like other dog hybrids so hiding them in my hair was easy with a few bobby pins… and the big black coat I stole from Riki hid my tail perfectly…

However… I could never hide from a hybrid. The lion could smell me and easily tell… while y/n was trying to look for somewhere to eat he was only glaring at me. 

“y/nnie… shouldn’t we go pay?” he asked and she nodded. “Yeah, did you get everything you wanted?” she asked and I felt the same bitterness I get when I see Riki and his owner. 

“Yes, thank you again!” he said and she grinned as she walked to the line and we waited for her by the door. “What’s your deal? Trying to play human?” he asked and I sighed. 

“Please don’t tell her?” I begged and he scoffed. “Why? I don’t know you nor do I owe you anything to keep your secret'' he said and he was right. “Is she your owner?” I asked and he shook his head. “But she’s a friend of my owner and she’s a friend to me,” he said and I nodded. “She’s kind…” I said and he sighed.

“Did you run away from home or something?” he asked me and I sighed. “I’ve never been adopted… I ran away from my adoption center. They… were going to send me to a breeding farm” I explained and he was silent. 

“I… ran. I still don’t know why. It's not like I'll last long, '' I said and he sighed. “I paid for everything!” I heard as she happily came over and the lion hybrid grabbed her bags. “So did you decide where we’re going to eat?” He asked her… he was not going to tell her? 

“Oh yeah, I found this one place!” 

She treated us to a good dinner, which I never really experienced, especially growing up in an adoption center. I think the best meals were when we had adoption events where they would do outside barbecues. 

“Thank you again… I never got your name?” she asked and I chuckled. “Jake,” I said and she smiled… I never had someone smile like that to me. “y/n! It's good to meet you… I hope you get back on your feet and maybe we’ll meet again?” she said and I nodded. The hybrid only sighs with our interaction… I wonder if he’ll tell her when they’re gone. 

Either way, I was back to being alone… what was I even doing?

I walked along the alleyway when I bumped into someone… “Ah sorry!” he said and bowed to me but left in a hurry before I could even realize… his wallet! “Hyung I know… yeah I’ll be in Japan for a few months so don’t worry about it,” he said which I could hear from his distance. I can’t believe I was going to do this… 

“Sir! Your wallet!” I said and he bowed. “Thank you! I must've not noticed!” he said with a smile and a wave off. I took three things from his wallet… a black card, a plain white card, and a student ID. 

“So Junghwan… I hope you don’t mind. You did say you weren’t going to be in Korea for a few months”

y/n’s perspective

Why do I care? Why… was he being so distant? I thought we were finally getting somewhere when we got along yesterday. It felt like we took a step forward only to take two steps back. He was so sweet…

“I thought that we were becoming–” “Friends? You’re a loser, I’d never be friends with someone as pathetic as a scholarship student who cheated her way into getting it,” he said and I felt my vision blur and my chest ache.

I could only let out a pathetic smile like I did back then… “Yeah… I guess that was stupid of me” I said as we walked to the apartment silently and had to stop myself from crying. 

He was starting to remind me of her… which I guess made sense since she was his owner for a bit. Just like her, I thought… Was he actually becoming my friend? When we went inside, he went straight to doing his own thing. He was sweet yesterday and now acted… bitter and mean again. 

He went into our shared room… maybe to read. Maybe something happened in class? I’ll have to talk to the teacher, it's perhaps Sunghoon again? I’ve heard of him causing other people trouble because of… I hope she does get better. But then again… I'm experiencing my karma for it.

Maybe… I just need to cheer Jay up a bit? I have a bit of money left over… maybe I could go to the store and make him something while he’s avoiding me?

Maybe he was just upset and had a bad day… Maybe I could cheer him up!

jay’s perspective

Everything can change quickly… and it will continue to do so. I’ll have a new owner by the end of the month and another new one by the next like always… It was a stupid and harsh cycle. 

I soon heard the apartment door close… Did she leave? I hope I wasn’t too harsh but… it's for the best neither of us get attached. She clearly told me she couldn’t have a hybrid. I’d be too distracting and she needs that scholarship of hers.

What I said though… was a little harsh. She’s trying hard to prove she deserves this scholarship. The many books and piles of notes on her desk prove that. It was nice… it was a very different environment than what I was used to. But for some reason, I got used to it too quickly… maybe because she was actually kind and gave me the time of day unlike anyone else. 

I wonder… where I would go next? Maybe abroad? That seems… more realistic. I’d never see her again and I'd never see the other people here like my old owners, Sunghoon, or the people I envy.

I was so lost in thought I heard the door again but I soon heard a lot of shuffling with bags and pans... What was she doing? Was she cooking? I didn’t think she’d know how to… I felt a little selfish. I wanted her to rely on me, it felt nice especially since she seemed to like my cooking and even show gratitude for it. 

But I couldn’t… I’d have a new owner, I shouldn’t have even tried to get used to her. Or even attempt to befriend her just because I was mean to her. I said things to her that I shouldn’t have and she’ll be the same as everyone else and abandon me. The only difference is that this time she won’t be the one at fault.

It’ll be my fault since I'm pushing her away so…

What’s the point of… enjoying any of it?

“Jay” I heard as I felt a hand on my shoulder trying to wake me up. I looked at her clearly annoyed and she gave me an apologetic smile only to excitedly grab my hand and lead me to the kitchen. 

“I was sleeping” I muttered and she chuckled. “I know but food is best when made fresh!” she said and I scoffed. So she did cook that was nice of her but I couldn’t show her that… I soon saw a complete mess. Flour on the floor… or sugar? Maybe both… and then eggshells on the counter. 

She baked… and the kitchen looked like it exploded. 

“I made cookies! They’ve cooled for a bit so they're still really warm!” she said with a big smile on her face and… I took a bite of the cookies and it was overly sweet… obviously, she also didn’t measure correctly but somehow they were the best cookies I've ever tasted. They had the best intention and my bitterness seems to only ruin the sweet gesture

These were better than the ones imported from anywhere as gifts or bribery of other owners… even if I knew deep down it needed some work. It made me feel disgusted by myself. Compared to her sweet personality with my selfish and self-destructive one it seems to destroy everything around me. 

“What do you want me to say? You made a mess and made this?” I said and I saw her face drop from that beautiful smile to teary eyes like how it did earlier when she picked me up from the university. “I wanted to do–” “Do what? Make a mess and a waste of food?” I said and she stayed silent. I knew what I was saying was gonna make her get rid of me.

It was gonna be me finally crossing the line and making her snap. Maybe I just wanted to hurry up the process…

“I’m sorry” she apologized and I had to bite my tongue from apologizing myself. “What did I do to make you hate me?” she asked and I sighed. Nothing… I've just been abandoned too many times. You have nothing to apologize for. 

“How could I not?” I said and that seemed to snap her. She went to our shared room and locked it. I wanted so badly to yell out that I didn’t mean it. To get onto my hands and knees and beg for her to keep me. 

I wanted to be selfish Everyone in the end just leaves me and–

“H-Haechan… this was a bad idea!” she cried out. She was on a call with the boy who I was pushed into custody of. “He… hates me,” she said and cried. 

I don’t… but I do hate myself. 

y/n’s perspective

I don’t know how long I cried. 

I don’t know why I was trying so hard… maybe because outside of Haechan and Mark, I didn’t get to experience stuff outside of studying. 

For a minute when I was talking to Jay… when I thought we could be friends, I genuinely thought maybe it could work. He could be my hybrid… and my friend.

But like everyone else… he hates me.

Even after everything I thought was going good… everything turned around and started to go in a positive light. However… I guess it was only temporary.

I waited for the message when Haechan told me he was here. 

So I decided to confront him a bit… he was just sitting there as if he was waiting for something.

“Jay… I don't think I'm the right owner for you. You should be with an owner you actually like” I said and he didn’t say anything. 

“Uhm… Haechan is gonna come to pick you up. I hope you find a permanent home, you are a pretty bird so it shouldn’t be hard” I said and I saw his eyes widen as if he was shocked by something. He was gonna say something when the door suddenly let out furious knocks. 

“I’ll open it,” he said and I fully expected it to be Haechan or even Chenle but… “You really adopted my hybrid? How pathetic are you y/n? You’re trying so hard to be me still?” e/n…

“You know Jay… I’ll give you another chance since I couldn’t get that mutt. You won’t have to suffer and be trapped with a murderer”

“Asahi, please… you must’ve seen her!” Hyunsuk whined through the phone while Asahi glared at me. “Yah! How many times have I told you?! I have an internship, and I've been helping Junghwan pack. She’ll show up eventually, Hyunsuk” he said, already annoyed by our quarrel. 

“I know… I'm just worried. I’m even thinking of going there myself soon… I just need to wrap a few things up so when I get there how about we hang out? After I found my sister… “ he said and I sighed. 

“You’re screwed,” Jaehyuk said and I agreed. It doesn’t help that I've been getting constant messages on my phone and calls worrying about me…

“Bye,” he said as he hung up and glared silently. I smiled through the awkward silence. “Explain right now why I can tell him you're here? I understand you said you had a big fight with your parents but… you never offered an explanation?!” he said frustrated and I sighed. 

“Do you know that rich family my parents wanted to connect me and Hyunsuk with? Well, they have a son and daughter. Their daughter is my age… so they wanted her to be engaged with Hyunsuk. So when he started rebelling that was his last straw. Now they're trying to set me up with their son… especially now that hybrid-human relationships were starting to become common in our socialite life” I said and he sighed. 

“Why haven’t you told him then? Hyunsuk could help–" "Cause I'm still planning on going back… I just don’t want to be given an arranged marriage” I said and he nodded. 

“Didn’t Niki’s owner get into an arranged marriage?” Jaehyuk asked and I nodded. “Yeah… I think that's where they got the idea from” I muttered and he sighed. 

“It's only a matter of time before he finds you here,” he said and I nodded. 

“I think I'm going out for some air?” I said and I noticed Jaehyhuk go by the door. “No… Asahi, you can't make him come with me every time I go out. I need… alone time” I said and he scoffed. 

“Look… if this was Seoul, you could but this isn’t. If you weren’t walking around in Prada shoes and Chanel jewelry then maybe I wouldn't worry” he said and I smiled. 

“And thank you for worrying… but trust me a little?”

I decided I wanted to go outside of this little town. 

“Hello, I'm here to see So Junghwan?” I said and the receptionist nodded before telling me… “It seems he isn’t here, we were told he was going on a trip?” she said and I sighed. 

He must’ve already checked out… I thanked her for leaving when I bumped into someone familiar. “Oh? Jake?” I said, now confused. His messy blonde hair was the only thing I recognized… he was dressed in all black with expensive clothes… “y/n!” he said with a happy grin. “Looks like you recuperated,” I said and he chuckled. “Oh… yeah, it was just a little misunderstanding,” he said and I nodded. “What… happened? If I may ask?” I said and he looked hesitant. “Ah! Sorry if I'm being rude–" "No… don't worry about it. Uhmm… I’m actually from Australia and… I lost my luggage and wallet, even my phone!” he said. 

“Oh… that sucks. Have you filled in a lost report?” I asked and he nodded. “Yeah, but I luckily recuperated my wallet and luggage… well some at least. I don’t have my ID yet, nor a phone” he said and I nodded. 

“I’m glad you’ve managed–” “Can I repay you?” he asked while cutting me off. I would say no… but I didn’t want to go back. 

“Sure!” 

jake’s perspective

I know I shouldn’t be using someone else’s money to repay her but… she was so kind to me and seemed a little down. 

“So what made you decide to come here to Korea?” she asked me and I had to come out with believable lies. “Oh… well, I wanted a break. Everything right now was overwhelming back where I'm from” which wasn’t necessarily a lie. 

“Oh, I see… I'm sorry. I hope everything gets better. I’m actually in the same boat…” she said with a sad smile. I didn’t like seeing that… for her. 

“I’m actually from Seoul,” she said and I wasn’t surprised by that… “I’m actually a student–” I was surprised she was a student at where I took these etiquette classes. “I’ve been enrolled online for this semester though,” she said and I nodded. “It must be stressful… that's a pretty good school I've heard?” I said and she nodded. 

“Yeah… but it's stressful because of… well my parents' ' she confessed and I listened to her say how pressured she felt and how her older brother was the rebelled child making her their second chance at a good kid. 

“I’m sorry to hear that… It does sound stressful. Do you have good friends?” I asked and she smiled. “I do… Me and my brother actually grew up in the same friend group, weird enough. Of course, I've met other people too, but sometimes I need a break from everything” she said and I agreed. 

“That hybrid… you said he was your friend right?” I asked and she nodded… it didn’t seem like he told her I was one. “Jaehyuk… he’s a lion hybrid. Have you ever had one?” she asked me and I chuckled. “No, and you?” I asked and she shook her head which surprised me. 

“I always wanted one though… my parents thought it would be a distraction though,” she said and I wanted so badly to try to charm her but… she’d probably report me for theft. 

“If you could have a hybrid… which would you choose?” I asked only to set myself up more. She smiled though… “I always wanted a dog hybrid… they seem so cuddly and sweet you know?” she said and I felt my heart ache. 

“I get what you mean,” I said and she chuckled. “How about you?” she asked and I found this all too ironic. “I’d choose the same,” I said and she smiled. “You know… you look like you’d be a dog hybrid” she said and I froze. “You have puppy features… it's cute” she said and I felt my face heat up. 

She seemed to giggle at my reaction before I could recover from that. “You really are cute!” she said and I felt my face heat up, even my tag twitch in “my” coat.

“Hey, Jake?” she said and I hummed waiting for whatever she’d say next. 

“Let’s do something fun!” 

“What do you mean you’ve never done this before!” she said as she held that dog plush she won. “I… haven’t actually ever been to an arcade before” I confessed and she grinned. “Then here! Yours, a physical reminder of this day!” she said as she held out the dog plush and I grabbed it. 

My first… gift. 

“We have to try some more! Ooh, they have figurines–” She was filled with life and I never would’ve expected it. I was jealous but she was contagious and I was actually enjoying myself for once. She was fun to be around… but I couldn’t keep the desires at bay, to tell her the truth and beg her to adopt me. 

To have what Niki had… who knew I'd find the perfect stranger at the worst time?

While I was playing human… stole from someone who had a lot of money and well ran away illegally. 

“A famous person is outside” I suddenly heard… famous? “Jake? What’s wrong?” she asked and I shook my head. “Nothing apparently someone famous is–” “Hide!” she said as she grabbed my wrist and hid us behind the arcade games away from the windows. 

“That’s Choi Hyusuk!” I heard and she looked nervous. “Are you okay?” I asked and she smiled nervously. “Of course!” she said but I couldn’t believe her terrible lie. “Did he do something to you? I can–” “No… he’s a friend I guess' ' she said but it only left me more confused. 

“Hyunsuk, she’s not going to be here” I heard and saw the lion hybrid by the side of someone else. “Fuck… Jake, we have to run” she whispered and I nodded worried for her. “Ready?” she asked and before we could run. “You really wanna run towards paparazzi? Stupid little sister” I heard… sister?

“Hyunsuk!” she suddenly said in a fake cheery tone while turning around to her supposed brother. “It’s great to see–” “How dare you ignore all of my messages?! I called like what!? 100… no 200 times?! I even filled up your voicemail!” he scolded. 

“Still pretending?” I heard and I looked at the hybrid… I needed to leave. 

“You interrupted me… uhmm” she wondered… “Who is this guy? Did he threaten–” he suddenly grabbed my collar. Who was he?! “–you? Do I need to kill him?!” he said and I shook my head silently begging for my life “Let him go! He knows nothing about this…” she said and the guy let me go. “Ah, sorry about that. I’m Hyunsuk!” he said as he held out his hand for me to shake. “Jake,” I said and he nodded and went back to scolding her. 

He was… scary.

“Where’d you even get that…” the lion hybrid muttered. I felt my eyes widen. “That smells familiar,” he said and I chuckled. “y/n, it was an honor everything really but I need to go!” I said and she was going to protest before being scolded by her brother. 

I ran… I soon saw paparazzi suddenly swarm outside taking photos from inside. 

“Hello! Do you miss y/n’s lover?” “Are you the reason she ran away?” “Who are you?”

y/n’s perspective

After getting away from the paparazzi and back to Asahi’s apartment. 

“You lied to me,” he pouted to him. “She asked me to keep it a secret” he defended and my brother glared at me. “Why didn’t you answer?” he asked genuinely worried and I was guilty that I worried him.

“I’m sorry…” I said and he patted my head. “Just tell me the truth,” he begged and nodded. 

“Mom and Dad want me to marry Junghwan…” I said and his eyes widened. “Junghwan?! He would never agree–""His parents agree to it… he’s currently in Japan hiding away” I said and he sighed frustrated. 

“They can’t force you… they couldn’t with me” he said and I smiled. “You’re a boy,” I said and he sighed. “I know… maybe this will convince them. They called worried for you, but they haven’t mentioned at all about canceling any marriage plans. No wonder mom was looking at a wedding dress catalog” he said and I whined frustrated at this. 

“This is unfair! Why am I even in school then learning business for Dad?!” I asked frustrated and he sighed. “They want to have you marry someone competent I guess?” he asked and I sighed. 

“Uhm… y/n who was the guy you were with?” Asahi asked and I was confused as to why that was important. “Yeah! Did you get a boyfriend?! Is that–” ”NO!” I yelled. 

“He’s a runaway hybrid from the Seoul Hybrid Adoption Center they’ve been looking for,” he said and I was confused. He was a human I was… I was sure of it until I saw Asahi show me articles and posts on Twitter comparing Jake to the missing hybrid from Seoul. 

And how apparently I kidnapped him…

no one’s perspective

“I don’t want any hybrids” you muttered and they sighed. They were trying hard to find their daughter a companion especially since they couldn’t give her a little sibling. 

She was happy by herself… She wasn’t solitary, she liked her parents' attention and made friends with her father’s friend’s kids. However, she needed a hybrid to show off, preferably one that could blend in with high status. 

While her parents gave up in Korea, they took their daughter to their appearances, hoping she would find one in China… which wasn’t ineffective. Nor the Japanese Adoption Center… 

It wasn’t until they weren’t paying attention to her when she wandered off… in Japan. Somewhere where she could barely communicate. 

She stayed put hoping her parents would come soon but her tantrum was slowly rising… It wasn’t until a boy, dirty and looking like he roughhoused with others, handed her a fish-shaped pastry… called a bungeoppang. 

She grabbed it and stared confused as to why he’d give her this. He looked hungry… and she ate an expensive hotel breakfast, while she doubts he even ate yesterday. He looked skinny… a little too skinny. 

She handed it to him… 

He then said something she didn’t understand… he asked her in Japanese, “Are you lost?” 

“Oh thank goodness!! y/n!!” I heard and I saw my mom and dad rush to me. “Are you lost?” she heard her dad ask and he didn’t understand, when her dad soon switched to speaking Japanese.

He took off his beanie to reveal his cat ears… 

niki’s perspective

“You’re an idiot. I hate living the life of a socialite… I hate being scolded by your dad, but I also hate how I have to keep up with you” I confessed and saw the hurt look in her eyes.

“But… you’re my best friend. I love living with you, taking care of you, everything about you” I said and she looked confused. “I wanted to do the etiquette classes, cause I know your dad is asking you to replace me. He has for years… he’s not quiet about that” I said and she looked away. I knew she tried to hide that from me… 

“I want to be better–” “You’re an idiot too!” she cut me off and I chuckled. “I told you, stop trying to change yourself for me! I like you for who you are not for who you want to pretend to be! So tell me if you want another–” “I don’t want to live with someone else. I told that hawk that one day you might do the same… but not willingly. I know you’d never abandon me… never willingly” I said and her eyes widened.

I guess that's what she didn’t hear. 

“I told him, I have to behave better for your dad. So I can continue being by your side” I said her eyes watered and I chuckled. She pouted and looked away now embarrassed. I hugged her while she tried to look away. 

“I’m sorry” she muttered and I smiled. “Just… don’t be mad at me anymore,” I said and she shook her head and hugged me tightly while hiding her face. “I wasn’t… I was just worried you got sick of me” she said and I smiled. 

“I’d never get sick of you… I promise” I said and she nodded. “I owe you everything… I'm glad I tried to help you that day. You changed my life for the better, and I’ll always be grateful y/n”

She cried after our misunderstanding and I'm just happy she’s gotten those thoughts out of her head. She’s taking a little nap while I wait for the bungeoppang to arrive after I couldn’t make it. 

She still didn’t understand that I live for her… my existence is for her. 

Which is why I needed to be better for her. So no one can tear us apart… I hope she doesn’t misinterpret my words again or at least learns to ask me for clarity. 

“Mhmm… has it arrived yet?” she asked and I chuckled. “Not yet, yome-chan” I teased and she whined and playfully smacked my arm. yome-chan… it's a cute way of calling her my wife. 

It's funny… we always told each other we’d wait for one another and yet we did silly things like get married in Japan that one time. Her parents still didn’t know about that detail. 

When we were both eighteen, we got married. No one knows… nor do they question our matching wedding rings. To others, we were just close… it's not even like anyone would suspect it. 

“You’re thinking too much,” she said and I laughed. “I want the bungeoppang already” I whined and she groaned. “It's been an hour!” she complained. 

“I think our delivery guy scammed us,” I said and she laughed. “First you use wheat flour and now we got robbed,” she said and I scoffed. 

I soon heard our doorbell. I went up to get it… “Why are you here?” I asked and he grinned. “Is y/nnie here?” he asks and I scoff. “Hyunsuk is here” I announce and she sits up. 

“Huh?” she said confused as she joined me by the door. “I assume this is yours by the way the driver just gave it to me thinking it was mine,” he said and it was bungeoppang! I took it and opened it as they talked. 

“What do you mean? Is she okay?” y/n asked. “Yeah… our parents just want her to marry some guy to give him the business since I can't anymore”

“I was hoping you’ve seen her?” he asked and she shook her head. “I wish she weren’t so similar to me,” he said and I scoffed. His sister was too similar to him… “You don’t think one of your friends has seen her?” she asked and he shook his head. 

“She’s MIA,” he said… he looked worried, maybe even stressed. “I’ll keep looking for her,” she said and he nodded. “I heard you’re taking etiquette classes?” Hyunsuk asks me and I scoff and don’t answer him. 

“Maybe you do need them” he muttered and got punched by y/n. “Hey! Sorry… it's okay I think those classes are useless, to be honest, my family hybrid can be as chaotic as me… but he’s the sweetest and cutest thing” he said… he was talking about Asahi.

“Well, y/nnie, if you find out anything about my sister I'd appreciate it. Maybe you can get your scary friend to see?” he asked about Wonyoung. I wonder… she was friends with his sister but for her to randomly disappear… it's not like they talked often, which was weird since they’re siblings. 

“I hope she hasn’t found any trouble”

The next day I went in to see Jake… he looked… sad.

“Oh! Riki!” he said suddenly, smiling at me. “All good?” I asked and his grin faltered. “How’d you get so lucky to get your owner to keep you?” he asked and I shrugged. 

“I approached her when we were kids… and I just so happened to be lucky with her,” I confessed but he seemed out of it… “Are you okay?” I asked and he sighed.

“Am I doing something wrong? I just want… what you have with your owner” he muttered and I sighed. “If I'm being honest… to find something similar would be rare, even a miracle,” I said but it seemed to worsen his mood. 

I didn’t want to give him false hope… finding the perfect owner was rare. It is a dream come true, it is for me at least. The class went on normally and I went outside to see her waiting with a tail ring. Everything was how it should be… I was at peace again. 

“Hmm… Niki, where's your coat?” she asked and I noticed I must've forgotten it. “You should ask the teacher tomorrow if you found it,” she said and I was going to respond when suddenly…

“I see you two are back to normal” I heard as I saw Wonyoung and y/n smiled. “It was a misunderstanding!” she grinned.

“Well, before I go I need to talk to you about Hyunsuk’s sister. She was spotted at a club in Jeju Island, far from Seoul '' she said and I was shocked, all the way there?

“I’ll text that to Hyunsuk, I hope she isn’t in too much trouble,” y/n said and WOnoung shrugged. “You know how she is, not like I blame her. Their parents are way overboard” she mentioned and I hear rumors about them. 

They were so strict that their oldest refused to take the company and even disowned his parents…. Hyunsuk has always been a troublemaker, but his little sister always tried to make her parents proud even at parties. Her sad smiles and sad eyes… She was never one to run away. 

“Eh?! I don’t want to!” I complained and she sighed. “Niki, please… don't you want to prove my dad wrong?” she asked and I sighed. “Fine, but after that can we go to the street market?” I asked and she chuckled.

“I was actually going to ask that too!” she said and I smiled. “Niki?” she asked and I looked at her waiting… Why did she look nervous?

“Don’t be mad?” she asked and I was confused… “My dad also set me up with a date for today. He’ll pick–” “You agreed?” I asked and she shook her head. He’s done this before… it's why we couldn’t show off we were together. Hybrid-Human relationships were… taboo in the wealthy world.

We’re seen as objects and not… humans. Even though we function like them, some of us have better abilities than humans depending on our animal counterparts… but we also have animal characteristics. 

There's… been cases where if they find out their kids were in relationships with the family hybrid then… they’ll get taken away. I… was okay with hiding it as long as I could be by her side. 

“Ok then… I’ll be on my best behavior” I promised and she nodded as we started to get ready. I got into the black suit she laid out for me. I sometimes wondered if she really did want another hybrid or… a human boyfriend. 

I went out of my room to see her door was open, silently letting me go in to see her get dolled up in her black dress and jewelry adorning her skin. 

“You’re dressing up for him too?” I teased and she scoffed. “I don’t need an excuse to look pretty” she corrected and I nodded. “But you’ll look pretty for me right?” I asked and she gigged. 

“For you maybe there's an exception,” she said and I smiled. 

Tonight I had to be on my best behavior… etiquette classes have taught me something.

We had been waiting outside… for a while now for this guy to come pick her up. Finally, we saw a black car arrive. “I’m so sorry!” I heard as he opened the door and bowed to us. I suddenly smelt a hybrid… a cat hybrid. 

“It's alright, it wasn’t on purpose,” she said and he sighed. But I heard a scoff… What was her problem? He soon grabbed the door and let her in and even waited for me to get in as well before he closed the door and got in from the other side. 

The cat hybrid in front of us wasn’t… happy to see us. 

“Behave” he whispered to her and I scoffed. 

“So, y/n uhmm…” he didn’t even know what to say to her. While the cat hybrid glared at y/n and I was starting to get annoyed… “Look, I know my dad is insistent in wanting me to get into a relationship but I’m not looking for one,” she said and he looked so relieved while the cat hybrid’s eyes lit up. 

“You’re the first girl my mom has set up with me who said that,” he said and I was confused. “Let's enjoy tonight then… as friends?” he asked and she chuckled. “Please?” she agreed. 

“Your mom also mentioned something about…” y/n trailed off while looking at me. What was she implying? “Ah… I haven’t told her yet” he said while petting the cat hybrid who looked confused and annoyed with him. 

“How about we make a deal?” he asked her and I was confused. What is going on now?

“Can we try to have a fake relationship?”

jay’s perspective

I… was starting to feel kinda bad. I didn’t mean to be so harsh with her but with everything, I had a right to be angry… but she didn’t ask for it. Especially since she started to cry silently on that desk while I sat on the floor trying to gather my thoughts. 

“You're… a scholarship student?” I asked and she tensed up but didn’t turn… instead she subtly tried to wipe her tears. “Y-yeah… Haechan’s friend and I met during my first year. She saw me struggle a lot with loans and offered to put a good word about me and advocated to get me a scholarship” she said. 

“Isn’t that… a bit unfair?” I asked, and she laughed softly. “Yeah… it is. I probably don’t deserve it, but that's why I have to try my best to keep it,” she said, finally turning towards me with that stupid forced smile. 

Her life differed greatly from any of my previous ‘owners’. 

“I’m sorry if I'm just a burden for the time we’re together,” I said and she shook her head. “You're not!” she yelled and it shocked me. “If anything… I am and I hope Haechan can find you a good owner who can afford the lifestyle you’re used to” she said and I didn’t say anything after that.

“Is there anything you want me to do for the time being when we are stuck together?” I joked and she smiled. “No… but thank you for the offer. If there's anything you want I'll try my best to accomplish it,” she said and I chuckled. “I guess… sorry for calling you an incompetent babysitter,” I said and she shook her head. 

“I guess in a way you were right?” 

She was beyond sweet. 

But also so pathetic at the same time. I have never met someone who so carelessly forgets to eat, to sleep at a competent time, to… simply live a normal life. 

She was sleeping on her desk when I moved her to her bed and tucked her in. She forgot to eat dinner. Now that I think about it… did she even have a meal card? She really was a hopeless kid. 

I heard a knock and if only others tried to take care of her this wouldn't happen. 

I opened it to see Haechan… “Ah! Where–" "SHHH, she’s asleep,” I said in a hushed yelling voice. He sighed and I tried to keep the door as closed as possible without locking myself out. “I wanted to take you out, I know she can't afford a lot of hybrid things so come on,” he said and I looked back at her worried…

“She won’t wake up anytime soon… she doesn’t even have classes today, don't worry,” he said and I nod following him. We went outside where I saw two guys his age.

“Oh? Is this hybrid stuck with our lovely girl?” Chenle asked… he was a Chinese international student. Also popular for being friends with the principal's daughter…

“Come on, we have to get some things… a collar, clothes, and apparently some groceries for the girl before she was hospitalized for not taking better care of herself,” Chenle said while reading a text message. 

“She’s going all out for y/n” Mark had said. 

“Well summer is coming up and she’s getting kicked out of her tiny dorm,” Haechan said. “How does someone live there? Anyway, she said the place is furnished, and because she has a hybrid now she qualifies for a better scholarship plan” Chenle said reading from his phone again. 

“A friend of Chenle helps y/n since well… she’ll get kicked out of the school otherwise,” Haechan said explaining. Kicked out?

“Why?” I ask and Mark shrugs. “All I know is the y/n doesn’t qualify for any awards since the spring semester last year so she had to get loans for that semester before getting sponsored by a friend” Mark explained. “It's a lot more complicated than that… okay come on it's a busy and long day” 

y/n’s perspective

I fell asleep again… but I swore I didn’t even make it to my bed before I fell asleep… I got out of bed hoping I didn’t step on Jay like he asked when I saw he wasn’t even there?

“Jay?” I asked… Did he run away?! I was responsible for him and he left… No no no no! I had to call Haechan and now. But he wouldn’t answer.

Why?! 

I had to run out and ask any passing student if they saw a loose hybrid but he didn't even have a collar… I was screwed… so royally screwed. “You look more pathetic than usual” I heard as I saw e/n. Not her again… “What should I expect from my ex bestie huh?” she asked as she sat next to me…

“I don’t need this right now," I muttered and she laughed. “Well, why are you running like a lunatic?” she asked and she was his ex owner. Maybe she had him…?

“Jay is he–” “You’re the one who has him now?! Pathetic!” she said while laughing… “Oh did he run away!” she said now laughing some more. She was as mean as ever, wasn’t she?

“Pathetic, really, I can't believe we were ever friends?!” she said and I sighed… “You and e/n/ii, can’t believe I ever associated myself with losers like the two of you!” she said and I sighed. 

“How many times do I have to tell you to get a life?” I heard as I saw Chenle… and Haechan, Mark, but I never felt so much relief before seeing Jay with them. 

“Yeah yeah yeah, you poor thing you're well… with someone who went from rags to riches,” she said as she left. “You okay?” Haechan asked and I nodded.

“I was worried when I woke up and didn’t see Jay in the room…” I said, “Haechan left a note no?” Chenle asked and I shook my head. “Oops…” Haechan said as the two boys shook their heads at him. “Well, you know how you were gonna live in the apartment for two months just for summer? Well she’s coming back and needs the place to be clear so we got another solution for you” Chenle said and felt dread.

“Your financial aid covers apartments–” “No it doesn't! The apartments the school offers are way more expensive–” Chenle put his hands on my shoulders calming me down. 

“Let me explain… Having a hybrid does help scholarship-wise, so they offer more aid to those who have a hybrid with them and can’t afford financially as long as you keep your grades up” Chenle explained and I nodded. “But… I told Haechan it was temporary. I can’t afford a hybrid–” “I know, which is why it’ll only be a year. It's a temporary solution” Chenle said and I nodded. 

“Ok… I guess that's fine as long as there's enough space for two people” I said and he nodded. “Good! The place is already furnished and you already have some things so you’d just have to move them and you’re good! You don’t need to worry about Jay, we covered everything including the collar on his neck” he said and I hugged him. 

“Ok! No touching,” he said and I chuckled forgetting he hates affection. Or at least from those he isn’t the closest to… “Just settle in today and remember to take care of yourself. She’s coming back for the next school year and if she sees you’re here not taking yourself then what? She scolds you worse than I am” he said andI chuckled. 

“I’ll try the best I can”

I was exhausted after moving everything and now that everyone was gone I could relax on the comfy couch. “Are you hungry?” Jay asked and I was hungry… i haven't eaten since yesterday morning. 

“Hmm? Do you wanna order food?” I asked knowing I still had some money for food. “I can cook… I did all the grocery food stuff… I didn’t know what you liked but I got a variety” he said and I was shocked…

“Oh… well if you're okay with it?” I said and he nodded as he opened the fridge and started to prep. I watched and he looked so professional at it. I didn’t know I stared too long until our eyes met. “Uhm… wanna help?” he asked nervously and I smiled. “Sure! Though Im pathetic at the kitchen” I said and he chuckled. “I think you’ll do just fine,” he said as he told me to do simple things as he made food…

I could honestly get used to this… and Jay looked happy cooking. Maybe… this wasn’t a bad idea after all?

jay’s perspective

I’ve never had an owner cook with me before let alone let me experiment on recipes. Her telling me she doesnt expect high end dishes made sense but also gave me some relief. 

Something about her didn’t make sense though… she had the manners of every owner i’ve had while sitting at the table with me. 

Was it just a coincidence? Maybe one of her friends taught her? That would make sense–

“Jay! You’re such a good cook!” she said grinning now finished…

“Thanks… but all I do is follow recipes,” I said and she smiled. “Trust me I couldn’t follow a recipe for the life of me… but if you want I can borrow some recipe books for you to experiment?” she asked and I felt myself smiling and even the few feathers I still had twitching. “I would appreciate that,” I said and she smiled. “Here I’ll clean the dishes,” she said and I nodded. 

“I’ll help clear the table,” I said as we did our jobs in a peaceful silence… “Hey, Jay… you know you don’t need to sleep on the couch I really don’t mind sharing the bed with you,” she said and I sighed. Just cause we now had a small apartment didn’t mean they gave us two rooms… just one bed and a couch, At least this time it was a double bed. 

“Sure…” I said and she smiled relieved… she was too kind for her own good. 

Too bad it’s only a temporary thing… its always temporary but even though I experienced the lavish life this might be my favorite. 

I shouldn’t be getting used to this stupid mundane lifestyle with her. I shouldn’t even be accepting her comfort or kindness when in the end ima… end up somewhere else. 

The next day I tried my best to not succumb to her kind smiles or sweet eyes. Instead, i tried to dismiss her, but I don’t think that’ll make her take the hint. 

I was again at my least favorite place in the world… the etiquette classes. I already knew everything i was just here because… everyone said there was something wrong with me and thats why I could never keep an owner. 

“I was told to be friendly with you” I suddenly heard as I saw Jake… I scoffed and rolled my eyes. “Anyway, why would you think I'd return the favor?” I asked and he shrugged.

“Cause you're outcasted and have no friends,” he said and I stayed silent. “Not like im aby better” he said and I guess that was true… once a stray always a stray.... at least in their eyes. 

“What's your new owner like?” he asked and I scoffed. “It's temporary so don't worry about it” I mutter and he sighs. “Are you even trying to convince her?” he asked and I scoffed… she doesn't have the time for a hybrid and she’s constantly studying nor does she really have funds to take care of me… at least not really?

“Jay’s having trouble keeping another owner? Yeah just give up at this point!” Sunghoon said and I scoffed. “I could say the same thing about you, with her remembering you–” Suddenly he grabbed my collar pressing his claws at my neck. “Don’t you dare mention a thing about her” he muttered and I knew deep down he was having probably an even worse time than me. 

“You should be busy with yourself over my problems,” I said and he chuckled. “You don’t know a thing” he muttered. “Sunghoon stop before the both of you get in trouble” Sunoo now said and he scoffed. “Get out of my business, will you? What did I say? Leave me alone!” he yelled at the fox… how strange that Sunghoon switched up on Sunoo so quick… in the span of one week everything changed one day. 

“Ok class–” Suddenly he let me go and everything was calm again until the end of the day. 

She wasn’t late this time… instead, she was waiting for me. I need her to stop looking at me with those bright eyes… how could someone so tired and burnt out look at someone like me with those kind and energetic eyes? 

“How was class?” she asked but It was the best we didn’t get used it. 

“Why do you care?”

UPDATE

a few updates for the next steps of my account. I want to finish Circus by the end of this year I'm hoping or at least writing it and uploading the final chapters in January. 7tales will be the last enhypen fic I write in a while since I might release two series simultaneously on ATEEZ. As you guys voted for the drasgon au I will release it after Circus is finished. However, I'm on the last two final chapters of a series I worked on for a Hunger Games AU. The dragon au will be called Your Lies with a sequel called Untold Truths. I will also still take requests I'm hoping since I'm so ahead of my series fics that I can finish requests a lot faster than I have in the past.

“No,” I said and he sighed. “Please y/nnie! He needs a home!” Haechan pouted and I scoffed. “Then you take care of him! I don’t have the time to take care of a hybrid…” I muttered and he chuckled.

“Which is exactly why you need one… he's very low maintenance, actually he can take care of himself. I think you need someone to take care of you” he said and I sighed… 

“I don’t need anyone to take care of me,” I said and he sighed… “Have you eaten today?” he asked and I sighed. “I didn’t have the time… I was studying–” “You’re always studying… Jay can help take care of you” he suggested and I shook my head.

“I couldn’t do that to him… he needs a good home,” I said and he smiled. “He’s had so many owners and yet none cared to keep him. All of them had all the money he could ever want…” he said and I sighed… 

“I really need to keep this scholarship, Haechan–” “How about a deal?” he asked and I knew I shouldn’t trust him but anything to make him shut up

“If under your care, you fail your next bio midterm, I'll find someone else… but if you can handle it please show him a good home” he begged and I sighed. “Fine…” I said not knowing what else to do about the whiny junior in front of me. 

“Okay! Let me text Mark that you agreed!” He said and I scoffed. Of course Mark was also involved… Eventually he came with a hybrid next to him.

“Ok, Jay here is a bird hybrid so he can only wear collars… he goes to the classes available on campus and Riki the devil hybrid’s lovely angelic owner got a new collar for him because I asked so nicely!” he said and I sighed.. 

“Hey you never know, by adopting a hybrid maybe the principal's daughter will be impressed by you” Mark said and my eyes widened. “You think?” I asked now hopeful and they chuckled. 

“I don’t get why you admire her so much…” Haechan said and I smiled. “Cause she’s so sweet, and she actually offered the scholarship to me. Without her I wouldn’t be in this school” I said and he sighed.

“Maybe I should ask her to pay my tuition,” Haechan said and Mark laughed. “Good luck, she won’t even pay for Jisung’s meal card, '' he said and I looked at the hybrid who only awkwardly stood there looking at the ground. 

“Hello! I’m y/n… I don’t think I'll be your permanent owner but I’ll try my best in the time we’re together” I said and he nodded. He was really pretty…

“We’ll let you guys get acquainted” Haechan said as he left us two. “What do you like to do Jay?” I asked and he shrugged. He seemed very silent… this was gonna be very awkward then. “I hope I don’t make you uncomfortable… I do live in a single dorm but it is quite small” I said and he still didn’t say a word. 

Did he hate me already? I know Haechan said his previous owners were all of the rich kids on campus but… I couldn’t afford the lifestyle they can, I can only afford this school because of my scholarship that I was given another chance with. 

“Jay… I hope we can get along”

jay’s perspective

I can’t believe I got replaced by a mutt and was now left with her… I was still given my classes but this was all ridiculous! So when I saw him walk in front of me with new designer clothes and a new collar more expensive than anything my new temporary owner owns, it pissed me off. 

What did he have that I didn’t?! The puppy looks?!  

“She’s your owner now huh?”  I said when he turned to look at me disappointed to see me… We weren’t exactly friends…

“I hope you enjoy it, she’s a bitch who doesn’t know how to do anything herself. You constantly complain and are gonna make you do so many stupid things just to humiliate you!” I said letting the anger get to me… she really was the worst. All of them were.

“She wouldn’t do that” he muttered and I scoffed, I don’t know I was so angry that I grabbed his shirt enough to get aggressive with him... “You’ve suddenly changed from rags to riches and think it doesn’t come for a price!” I said… funny it's almost like we switched spots. 

“You know nothing about– I knew you were hurt but–” “Why are you suddenly mentioning her?” I asked, now confused… e/n was his owner, wasn’t he? “She adopted me… not like it's any of your business,” he said and I sighed… so she didn’t adopt him? Or did she just beat her to it?

“Is the free trial bird causing you trouble? I would too if I suddenly lost everything and suddenly became a freeloading hybrid!” Sunghoon laughed and I scoffed.

“You shouldn’t be laughing? From what I heard your owner doesn’t even know–""Shut up before I make sure this pretty little bird can’t sing again” he threatened… 

“Sore subject? I wouldn’t want to remember you either, Sunghoon '' I said and he glared not saying anything else as I sat down in a different seat than I normally would. 

First Riki now Jake? They both got the happy endings they want… don’t they? So… what about me?

“How’d it go?” Hyunsuk asked and I smiled. “Well, they didn’t agree at first but I got them to understand and even accept my little favor,” I said and he nodded. “I can’t believe your running away worked in your favor,” he said and I scoffed. 

“Just because you ran away to study music doesn’t mean we would turn out to be the same dear brother of mine,” I said and he laughed at me. “Just tell me the next time will you?” he asked and I shrugged. “Maybe I won’t, you didn’t tell me at first after all,” I said and he shrugged. 

“I guess this was payback huh?” he asked and I chuckled. “Whatever… How's Asahi doing? Already missing my presence?” I teased and he scoffed. “He’s happy you're gone~” he sang and I stuck my tongue out at him. “Immature,” he said while doing the same. He never changes. 

“I can’t believe you decided on–” “y/nnie!” I heard and faked a smile. “Hello, e/n” I said and she smiled. “Hello, oppa!” she said to my brother, making a gag… or at least in my head. “Hello, Jay,” I said and he bowed.

“Ah! Speaking of him, I finally found the perfect hybrid–”

She was such a materialist and rude bitch. Jay was one of the best hybrids I heard and yet no one wanted to keep him because he wasn’t a presentable breed. Unlike a panther, pretty fox, dog, cat, bunny, or whatever exotic hybrid out there. A bird... From the United States, he technically was exotic but… not a generalized hybrid to bring around. 

“Ah, so you’re done with your free trial hybrid?” Hyunsuk said and I elbowed him. “OW!” he said and e/n smiled. “He’s sweet but I finally found the perfect one, so if you know anyone who needs an obedient hybrid tell them to look for me. He’s for sale” she said and I had to force a smile. Jay only looked down with a sad look in his eyes. 

I really hated people like her. 

“I hope everything turns out well, I would love to see him back here,” she said and I nodded while taking his files when I ran into Jay again. Probably for class… 

“Jake? The stupid golden retriever?” he muttered and I sighed. “You know him?” I ask and he shrugs. “You want to adopt him?” he grimaces and I smile. “Yeah… he’s sweet and he needs a home,” I said and it seemed to make him sadder. “Jay, I promise there's gonna be someone who’s gonna keep you forever and they’ll probably not be from this world you’re so used to,” I said and he scoffed. 

“I’ve had too many owners I might as well be in a foster system…” he angrily muttered and I sighed. “Jay, don’t lose hope now,” I said and he scoffed. “Why? Everyone proved me otherwise… Why are you even adopting a hybrid? I never thought you would?” he asked and I pet his head. He really was a touch and loved-deprived hybrid. The desperate look in his eyes even brought him close to tears.

“It’s a complicated story to explain… but I promise, don’t lose faith,” I said and he nodded. I soon heard laughter from the other side of the lecture hall. “Sunghoon acting out again?” I said and he nodded.

“He’s been picking on that deer hybrid since the beginning of classes” he explained and I sighed.

“He can’t take out his own insecurity and anger on other people… his owner, she’s in critical condition. She’d be disappointed to see him acting this way” I said and he sighed. 

“I’ve heard him say to the other hybrids and owners say bad things about her… I wonder if he’s given up on her?” he asked and I sighed. 

“He’s just hurt… this world seems to have a lot of hurt hybrids' ' I muttered and he nodded. “There are some good ones… like Riki, he’s always been nothing but trouble but his owner loves him for who he is… it’s annoying” he confessed and I smiled. 

“I wish you lots of luck, Jay. I know there's someone for you… just don’t give them too much trouble”

“You’re such an idiot…” I said to Junghwan who was officially back in Korea. “Come on, you’re gonna talk that way to your ex-fiance?” he taunted and I flipped him off. “You’re only here 'cause you’re nosy and you’re a reference for me,” I said and he pouted. 

“So mean! I just wanna meet the hybrid who robbed me” he said teasingly and I rolled my eyes. Junghwan was taller than Jake, so that trench coat he wore was a little bug on him, otherwise I picked out a lot of stuff for him. 

“How sure are you that someone won’t adopt him before you get there?” he asked and I glared. “Cause I talked to them a few days ago when I took him back about adopting him. They’re putting him under hold for me and doing exams before letting him go” I explained and he nodded. 

“I heard rumors, you know? e/n wants to adopt a stray golden retriever?” he said and I glared at him… “Something about pissing off certain competition~,” he said and I scoffed. “Are you being serious?” I asked and he smiled. “My sources are never–” “Don’t make me call Yoshi right now,” I said and he sighed. 

“Yeah, he overheard her say that on his way back from class,” he said and I scoffed. “I know you hate her… but if he’s on hold then you’re good right?” he asked and I nodded. “Yeah, he shouldn’t even be on display so it's fine… what a bitch.” I said and he laughed. 

“Ooh isn’t this cool!” he said as he started trying out clothes for himself. He was… unserious. 

What else do I need? Clothes check… cologne check… jewelry check… accessories check… hygiene stuff check… “Did you get his collar yet?” he asked and I sighed.  “That’s what I’m forgetting” I muttered and he chuckled.

“Ooh! Can I help! I wanna help!” 

I was now sitting down waiting for him to come out when I saw a group of people I absolutely detested… “Sorry miss, but like we said Sim Jaehyun is a hybrid already adopted–” “But he’s still here!” she whined and tantrumed. “I know, Miss, and we apologize– Ah Miss y/n! Jake will be out in a bit but we need some last-minute signatures if you don’t mind” she said and I nodded. 

“How dare you steal my perfect hybrid?!” she tantrumed and I smiled. “Too bad,” I said and she scoffed. “Did you see that?! Who does she think she is!?” she yelled to her friends and I laughed. “What? Already sold Jay? Brats like you don’t deserve hybrids like them” I said and she scoffed

“Whatever! He’s not even a purebred… and he’s probably a mutt!” she insulted before stomping her red bottom heels else were… bratty girls like her with daddy’s money annoy the hell out of me. They’ll marry rich and never work… not like I’d judge but to be such a bitch makes her disgusting in my eyes. 

I already saw how she treated Jay… nor doubt she’d treat Jake the same way. As much as I felt bad for Jay, I couldn’t help myself with Jake, especially with how he acted pretending to be human. 

He’s my hybrid now… whether my parents, her, or anyone like it. 

jake’s perspective

I don’t know when I was gonna be moved but I was already away from the facility. I was no longer up for adoption… I'd never get that opportunity. 

He said I’d see her again… I really wanted to. 

I kept on having delusional dreams of her… waking up only to feel disappointed. I don’t think I'll ever see her again. Why would I? I got her in trouble… I always make a mess of things. It's why I never got adopted. I would embarrass myself or just make mistakes. Besides… I wasn’t the sweet puppy most people go for anyway. Hybrids get adopted young or… if they're exotic, purebred, or just pretty…

“You look lonely” I heard and I felt myself freeze. 

“What… are…” I was confused seeing her in front of me. She was dressed differently than when I met her and thought she wasn’t another student in that school for rich kids or scholarship students. 

“I’m sorry to cause you so much trouble” I apologize… I had to, it was my– “Huh? You didn’t cause me any trouble… you probably helped me with giving my parents a scare of their lives but, it helped me a lot” she said… I felt confused. 

She smiled and slid a paper through the kennel door. It was… my file and it said– 

“You’re adopted by me, Sim Jaehyun if you want me to?”

jake’s perspective

“Yes! Please, anything but be stuck at a farm!” I begged that I jump up to the kennel door to try to get closer to her. She laughed and smiled softly… she was saving me from a stupid farm even though I gave her trouble and she said… 

“Wait… but you said you couldn’t own a hybrid?” I asked and she smiled. “Well… I negotiated for myself like I was planning before I met you, and I negotiated for a companion. I don’t understand why you’ve never been adopted” she said sincerely and I felt like crying. 

“Thank you… I'll be the best hybrid! I took classes and everything!” I said and she giggled while taking a piece of paper out of her bag. “Jake, a golden retriever hybrid with a lot of energy. A well-mannered hybrid that needs etiquette training but otherwise a lovely hybrid” she read while now showing me… it was the class file?

“I’ve been busy while they’ve been preparing you with checkups and vaccines… you wanna see what I’ve prepared?” She smiled and I nodded. “As long as I'm by your side,” I said and she giggled. “Well, Jake, you might get sick of me then. You’re stuck with me” she said but I shook my head. 

“You’d get sick of me before I'd ever get sick of you” I confessed and felt sad at the thought… She hummed and pretended to think…

“Well, good thing we’ll never get sick of each other!” 

“You’re the infamous Jake!” I heard and quickly hid behind y/n. Was this to punish me? “He’s not mad at you nor is he scary” she reassured but I didn’t want to believe her.

“It’s true in fact anything you did was nothing compared to the hell I would’ve faced married to her '' he said… marry? “We were gonna be arranged to marry by our parents, remember I mentioned negotiations?” she asked and I understood now… she ran away from him… technically her parents while he ran off to… japan?

“Oh, this reminds me! Riki and her owner mentioned if I saw you you owe him a new coat” he said and I sighed… I guess I did. “Don’t worry about that, I'll ship one to replace it” she reassured me and I nodded. She was… real, not a dream like I'd sometimes have. 

“You already have an obsessed hybrid” he teased her and she scoffed. “You done? You’ve said your peace?” she asked and he nodded while putting his hand out to me… I shook it and he smiled. “See ya around Jake! It’s nice meeting you and don’t worry about it. The past is the past and I'm a free man again!” he joked before saying his goodbye. 

“He’s a strange guy… you’ll meet a lot of strange friends of mine,” she said and I chuckled. “As long as I'm with you,” I said and she smiled. She looked at me with a sudden pout… she was so cute. “You need a haircut and maybe a fur trim? Want to do it now?” she asked and I chuckled. 

“And be pampered by you, please?”

y/n’s perspective

The workers said because im his first and probably only owner in his life that he’ll be extremely attached. Not that I minded but… it worried me for what it would be like with sudden separation anxiety and getting used to etiquette.

There's no way I'd get rid of him now… we're stuck with each other but I don't need anyone telling him he needs to work for his place with me like they’ve done to Riki. My sweet puppy… he looked so happy and relaxed getting a haircut and trim. 

I still needed to give him a collar. Luckily I was assured he’d most likely react well to it… and not badly since he doesn’t have any bad experiences since im his first owner. His first time enjoying life outside the hybrid facilities.

“He’ll be out shortly, miss' ' I heard and I nod as I stood up now waiting for him. When he did appear his hair was now shorter, not much of a difference but it should revive his hair to be more healthy and his puppy ears and tail were now neat. 

He was a pretty hybrid… he was a pretty boy to me before too. 

“I think I look pretty good,” he said and I chuckled. “You look very handsome,” I said and his cheeks flushed a bit before he recounted. “I-I wasn’t before” he teased and I smiled at his nervous stutter. “You were pretty but you look better and happier,” I said and he smiled.

“I’m lucky to have met you,” he said and I nodded. “It’s the same for me, Jake,” I said as we left the place and started walking back to my apartment “You’re now my priority okay?” I said and he smiled. “Thank you…” he said, looking hesitant and I sighed. “You know… I was wondering if you wanted to continue those classes?” I asked and he hummed.

“Well… I wanna see Niki again! So… I wouldn’t mind besides, you have classes there too right? I can keep myself from feeling bored when away from you” he said and I smiled. 

He seemed to already understand that.

“Then do your best, okay Jake?” 

jake’s perspective

It was… a dream come true. We ate a filling meal she ordered from her apartment when she showed me my room and the closet of clothes and my own comfy bed. 

“I have one more thing to show you,” she said and I nodded before she gave me a box. It was the only thing she left for me to open? It had a bunch of packaging when I saw it… my own collar. 

“It also comes with tail rings for your tail–” like Niki “–in case the collar bothers you, but I hope you like it and you don't need to wear it often just when we go places that require it like your class,” she said and I couldn’t help the grin on my face. 

I would be going to class with a collar I'd be like those other hybrids… 

I couldn’t help that I suddenly hugged her and I thought for a second I should have since I had to behave but when she laughed and hugged me back I immediately melted into her comfort. 

“I hope you’re happy here with me,” she said and I smiled. “I’m really glad I met you, maybe it was fate that finally put us together,” I said and she smiled. 

“I think so too”

I was enrolled in classes again so I'd have to start going to them again. The only bad thing is Niki is still in Japan so I was alone… “She’s your owner now huh?”  heard as I saw the mean bird hybrid. 

“I hope you enjoy it, she’s a bitch who doesn’t know how to do anything herself. She's constantly complaining and is gonna make you do so many stupid things just to humiliate you!” he yelled at me. Others were staring…

“She wouldn’t do that” I muttered and he scoffed, grabbing my shirt. “You’ve suddenly changed from rags to riches and think it doesn’t come for a price!” he said and I was confused… What did he know about her? From what I know he knows nothing about her.

“You shouldn’t be laughing... From what I heard your owner doesn’t even know–" "Shut up before I make sure this pretty little bird can't sing again” he threatened… 

“Sore subject? I wouldn’t want to remember you either, Sunghoon”

Now that I had a collar many hybrids tried talking to me… it was strange. 

Instead, I decided to sit next to a fox hybrid at the back of the class wanting to avoid Jay… but the fox hybrid didn’t look any better. Most of the hybrids in this room were spoiled and mean or… spoiled and depressed. It was a strange concept… the stray hybrids were also losing hope like I did. 

It was cruel…

I went outside waiting for her… would she pick me up? It was when I noticed the fox hybrid, snow leopard, and bird were also waiting like me. “I’m sorry I'm late!” I heard and saw a girl with a patient wristband. “I forgot where this place was and–” “Whatever,” the snow leopard said with a sad expression on his face. 

They walked off and I wondered what was his issue? “His owner is an amnesiac… everyone thinks he tried to kill her and she just forgot,” Jay said but why would he look at her with such a sad expression otherwise… “He’d never do that, they’ve been with each other since kids' ' the fox hybrid defended. 

“What do you know Sunoo?” Jay asked and the fox hybrid stayed silent. “Jake!” I heard and saw y/n. “You’re late” I pout and she sighed. “It took me a while to actually get here from across campus,” she said and I nodded. “Hmm? Looks like you had company though?” she asked and I sighed. 

“Not really,” I said as we walked off. When we were away from the lecture hall I decided to ask. 

“Why was Sunghoon and Jay so mean?” I asked and she sighed. “Jay is a hybrid that many people get for free trial meaning they see what they like in a hybrid and what they don’t… but since he’s had so many owners and isn’t a ‘cute’ hybrid they give him away” she explained and I couldn’t imagine being in his situation. 

“While Sunghoon is just… always been a troublemaker and recently with his owner being in such an accident to forget her memories he might just be a little heartbroken. There were rumors they loved each other…” she explained and it did seem like a heartbreaking experience. 

“Give them a little patience okay?” she asked and I smiled. “I will,” I said and she nodded. 

“Besides… you don’t have to worry about anything when you're with me”

jake’s perspective

Where could I even go? Paparazzi followed me to the building and I couldn’t even enter it to hide in an apartment that wasn’t even mine. 

I heard the whispers of me being a hybrid and how she was a criminal now for kidnapping a hybrid… I wandered away from the building and area in general when I found myself at the convenience store again, where I met her…. To meet her again but this time as a hybrid. 

“Well well well,” she said while glaring at me. She had a basket of snacks and honestly I thought fate was cruel to put me here. 

“You’re a hybrid huh?” she asked and I smiled. “You have features of one but I never would’ve guessed,” she said and I unclipped on the bobby pins from my ear and hair to show her. “You’re a dog?” she asked and I nodded. 

“You’re a hybrid… who pretended to be a human. And also robbed my friend as well” she said and I felt my eyes widen. “I… I'm sorry! He dropped his wallet and I had the good intention of giving it back but… I took his keycard and credit card "I confessed and I felt myself being close to tears. 

“Hey, Jake?” she said in a soft voice giving me a smile. “You need to go back,” she said and I lost it. I let my tears flow down my face and I couldn’t stop the sobs coming from my mouth. “Shhh… I don’t want you to be in trouble. I called Junghwan and he won’t press charges… but, you need to go back. You can still get–” “I won’t ever get adopted. It's what they told me I'm getting older and they think I'm better off at a hybrid farm” I confessed and I couldn’t even look at her. 

“Jake, we’ll figure something out”

y/n’s perspective 

I don’t know why I offered to help but I did. “How didn’t he notice that his card was being used?” Asahi muttered and I chuckled. When I told Junghwan he was shocked and thought we were joking… he was upset but also looked into the purchases… it was just food and it wasn’t even a lot of food. Not to mention a purchase at the arcade… 

I offered to pay him back but he said it was fine. 

“I’m sorry” Jake apologized and I could see Jaehyuk glaring at the dog hybrid. He was cute… with his ears and tail now on display he was a really pretty hybrid. Surely someone was missing him?

I already thought he was a cute guy… but he definitely had a charm to him. “Jaehyuk, why didn’t you tell us?” I asked and he sighed. “He… seemed desperate. I didn’t think he’d actually do this long let alone rob someone. Besides… it wasn’t any of my business why he ran away” he explained. 

I could see he pities Jake. At the end of the day, he was a hybrid like him… there are stories of hybrids running away all the time some but very few lived amongst humans. 

“So… y/n don’t check your phone,” Hyungsuk said and I sighed. “Too late… mom and dad already called the tabloids and they said they’d take it down if I agreed to go home,” I said and I was upset about it… but I had to cry to find my way out of this. 

“I’m sorry for all the trouble–” “This isn’t your fault, funny we’re both runaways' ' I joked and he sighed. “Why would a hybrid run away anyway?” Asahi asked “I was going to be placed in a breeding farm” he explained… that means he wouldn’t be eligible for adoption anymore. Why?

“I… I’m too old for the system now and no one wants an older and hyperactive hybrid” he said with a sad tone. I always wanted a hybrid my age…

“y/n… mom is calling again,” Hyunsuk said and I had an idea… but this idea could either save both me and Jake… or none of us. “I’ll talk to her”

jake’s perspective

She left the room to talk on the phone. My mind was spiraling wishing that she’d adopt me… she did say she’d want a dog hybrid. But would she even want me… especially since she also ran away and I was now a problem for her to solve. 

“Jake… you can’t just run away forever you know that?” Jaehyuk said and I nodded. While her brother and his owner seemed to be busy talking amongst themselves… I guess we were having a hybrid-to-hybrid moment. 

“I know… it was a stupid decision anyway. I just feel bad I caused her so much trouble…” I said and he sighed. “She’s not in a lot of trouble like you’d think… it's an internal conflict she’d have to face eventually you just made it sooner” he explained and I sighed. “Doesn’t make me feel any better” I said and he chuckled. 

“You know… I heard farms weren’t that bad” he said and I scoffed. “Honest… it's better than getting adopted and neglected or abused. I know some hybrids who… aren’t lucky and would take being at a farm any day than where they are” he explained. 

“Really?” I asked and he nodded. “Have you ever met… Jay or Sunoo?” he asked and I remembered the eagle hybrid. “Jay… he’s not too friendly with me. He actually doesn’t like that I'm a stray” I explained and he sighed. 

“I bet he’d prefer being on a farm where he was free then in the hands of a new owner every month” he explained… I heard rumors that he was a free-trial hybrid. “And if you ever meet Sunoo… tell him to keep strong. The fox needs it…” he said and I wondered why… 

“Jake… we’re gonna have to take you back to Seoul,” her brother said and I knew this was coming. “I don’t think I’ll be able to tell him…” I told the lion and he gave a soft smile. “For a hybrid… you really don’t use those ears of yours huh?” he asked and I was confused. “Hyunsuk, you should wait for your sister” 

I was now in front of the biggest hybrid center in all of Korea… back to where I ran away from. 

“Jake… just a little longer alright?” she asked me and I gave her a sad smile. I really did like her… she was the nicest human I've met. 

“Thank you so much miss! He ran away when we took him to hybrid classes, im so sorry the media is causing you trouble because of him!” the employee glared at me but bowed at her. “He’s always been a troublemaker,” they said as I was now given a tight and itchy collar while being inspected for weapons… or outside objects. 

“No worries… could I speak to you about something real quickly?” she asked and the employee led her away which left me with her brother. 

“My sister seems to really like you,” her brother said as we walked to where I used to be caged up… “She’s really nice” I muttered and he laughed. “You know she’s always wanted a dog hybrid. She’s never been an outgoing kid but wanted to be” he sighed. “She wanted someone to distract her from her studies… I think she still does” he trailed off deep in thought. He quickly snapped out of it though and gave me a grin. 

“You don’t have to worry. Trust me… you’ll see her again” he explained as he waved goodbye I was taken to the back where trouble hybrids often were…

I was now in my kennel…

The outside world was… fun. At least with her… and while it lasted everything was forbidden. 

She was forbidden… freedom was forbidden… at least for me.
