not to start Drama i legit am just asking bc im curious!! whats ur opinion on akito? like obv 99% of the story hes a Bad Guy but do u personally think he deserves some redemption? (also, the new anime is altering some Problematique stuff from the manga, so they might change how they deal with akito now?) idk im just lovin the wild ride miss takaya is taking me on

my gut feeling when it comes to akito is just that i hate her. i do not like akito and i don’t think i ever will.

however, akito is a complex character and my thoughts on her are also complex. i dislike her because she uses her position as god to make the zodiac members suffer: isolating yuki, preparing kyo for a future of isolation, using physical violence against hatori, kisa, and rin, etc. but there are reasons why akito behaves this way. as the zodiac’s god, she was raised by her father and the servants of the sohma household (and to an extent, the zodiac members) to believe that she could do no wrong. she was essentially told that she was right to abuse others because of her position. akito is also the product of abuse from her mother, which is a big contributing factor. specifically pertaining to yuki, much of the abuse akito afflicted on him occurred while she was also a child, and i don’t feel like i can criticize that the same way i would child abuse from an adult.

in some ways, i don’t think akito could help but become an abuser. but i refuse to let this dissolve her of responsibility. akito caused a lot of harm to the members of the zodiac, and i don’t think her position as god makes that okay, despite what the sohma clan might think.

i do, however, think she deserves redemption. akito really just wanted to be loved and i’d like to see her earn that. i just don’t agree with how she is “redeemed” in the manga. tohru offers her friendship, she decides not to lock kyo up, the curse breaks...but what reparations does akito make? she “frees” everyone after the curse is already broken, but does nothing to right past wrongs. yuki still bears the trauma of his isolation. kyo is still accepting that he has a future. hatori is still partially blind in one eye. and akito has done nothing warrant forgiveness. i especially despise the scene when akito is in the hospital with tohru and gets the pet name “Aa-chan” from Hana and a hug from Uo as if guilt alone is enough to redeem her. i just do not think that deciding not to literally imprison someone for their entire life and feeling bad for controlling kureno counts as a redemption. i’d love to see her redeemed. in the manga, at least, i just don’t think she truly is.
