Bangladesh Women will take on Scotland Women in Match 1 of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, at the iconic Sharjah Cricket Stadium, on Thursday, October 3, in Sharjah. The event was scheduled to be held in Bangladesh but the political unrest in the country meant it was shifted to the United Arab Emirates. Nevertheless, the country still plays as the host though not geographically.
Bangladesh were impressive in the warm-up games. They played two games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka and were victorious on both occasions. They would like to continue their momentum, playing their opening game of the tournament. Scotland are jostled up against the giants like England and West Indies along with Bangladesh in Group B. European Super League LIVE: Leeds and Liverpool protest, Chelsea and Man City threat made
European Super League slammed by Collymore on GMB
European Super League LIVE updates
– Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham confirmed as the six Premier League clubs involved – A further three European clubs are expected to be announced as ‘founding members’ – The new website states that the inaugural season is “intended to commence as soon as practicable”. – The plans have been widely condemned by FIFA, UEFA and all governing bodies involved with threats of clubs and players being banned from domestic and international competitions. Have your say on whether the Premier League should axe the ‘big six’ here
Jurgen Klopp pulls no punches
Klopp said: “My feelings didn’t change. My opinion didn’t change [from when he has criticised Super League suggestions in the past]. I heard for the first time about it yesterday. I was trying to prepare for a difficult game.
“We got some information, not a lot. Most of the things in the newspapers. It’s a tough one. People are not happy with it, I can understand it.
“I can’t say a lot more because we were not involved in the process – not the players, not me – we didn’t know about it. We will have to wait how it develops.”
Leeds and Liverpool protest
Fans of Leeds and Liverpool have joined up ahead of their Premier League clash tonight to protest the ESL.
A banner, attached to the back of an aeroplane which reads “Say no to the super league”, is being flown over Elland Road prior to kickoff.
Supporters are also stood outside of the stadium holding up another banner which was shown to the team’s coaches as they arrived.

Prince William weighs in
Prince William has weighed in on the European Super League plans.
The future King of England said: “Now, more than ever, we must protect the entire football community – from the top level to the grassroots – and the values of competition and fairness at its core.
“I share the concerns of fans about the proposed Super League and the damage it risks causing to the game we love.”
Man Utd player reaction
Manchester United’s players are reportedly angry over not being informed that the club are joining the European Super League.
Ed Woodward held an emergency zoom meeting with the players this morning, according to the Daily Mail.
And they are frustrated that they had to find out the controversial manoeuvre at the same time as the general public.
Chelsea and Man City threat made
UEFA executive committee member Jesper Moller wants Chelsea, Real Madrid and Man City to be kicked out of this season’s Champions League.
The head of the Danish FA told DR: “The clubs must go, and I expect that to happen on Friday.”
Oliver Dowden announcement
Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Oliver Dowden has made an extremely strong statement in the House of Commons this afternoon, threatening to issue bans on foreign transfers and tax hikes on the big six.
He said: “We are examining every option, from governance reform, to competition law, to the mechanisms that allow football to take place… we will be reviewing everything the Government does to support these clubs to play.
“We will put everything on the table to prevent this from happening.
“We will do whatever it takes to protect our national game.
“I discussed our options with the Prime Minister this morning, and we are working at pace across government and with the football authorities.”

Premier League meeting tomorrow
The Premier League will hold a meeting on Tuesday between the 14 clubs who have not been included in the European Super League plans. The breakaway competition, which has no promotion or relegation, was revealed last night.
The Premier League has threatened to throw Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, out of the top flight.
FIFA and UEFA has also claimed that any players particiating in the new event will be banned from representing their countries at World Cups and European Championships.
A meeting between the rest of the Premier League teams will take place on Tuesday to decide what action they should take.
Liverpool CEO has email leaked
An email from Liverpool chief executive Billy Hogan to club employees this morning has been leaked.
It read: “The Super League will be the future of European football.
“If we want to continue our journey of being a sustainable Club with ambition to grow and continue winning trophies then we should absolutely be part of that process and have a seat at the table rather than outside that group.”
Ed Woodward a ‘snake’
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has not held back on brandishing Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward as a “snake”.
Ceferin said: “If I start with Ed Woodward, he called me last Thu evening saying he’s very satisfied with and fully supports the reforms + the only thing he want to talk about was FFP, when obviously he had already signed something else.
“Andrea Agnelli is the biggest disappointment of all, I’ve never seen a person that would lie so many times, so persistently as he did. It’s unbelievable.
“We didn’t know we had snakes so close to us, now we know.”

Premier League rivals want punishments
According to Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol, some of the Premier League clubs not invited into the Super League are so furious with their rivals that they want the ‘big six’ kicked out immediately.
He spoke to a board member, who wished to remain unnamed, at one of the clubs intending to join the Super League who admitted the move has caused massive friction within the Premier League, which still has six rounds of matches remaining before its 2020-21 season is completed.
Speaking on Sky Sports News on Monday, Solhekol said: “I asked this board member if civil war had broken out in football and he said, ‘This is not civil war, this is a nuclear war.’
“Some of the other 14 Premier League clubs who are not involved in this breakaway want the six breakaway clubs to be sanctioned immediately.
“They believe the sanction should include suspension from the current Premier League season. Some of these other 14 clubs are so unhappy with what is happening that they want this six clubs to be kicked out of the Premier League immediately.”
Chelsea boss Tuchel talks
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has become the first Premier League manager to talk out about the Super League.
He said in a press conference: “I’ve know since yesterday but I am here to be in the hardest competition, it’s why I came here. To play the toughest competitions in Europe.
“As you know, I don’t get around the subjects around us. I was hoping to talk about Man City and Brighton but it’s not the case.
“I am part of this club and I trust this club to make the right decisions. I think it’s too early to judge everything and it’s not my part.
“On my badge it says that everyone has to play their role. My role is to coach, be focused, and we’ve another game tomorrow.
“I am always a little bit surprised when it happens. We are all competitors and try to beat each other but in the end we hope a manager is in a good place to work.
“So when it happens, it never feels good as a manager. But it’s not my job to comment but it is what it is.
“Everyone fights hard for results and when a big decision comes, it was a surprised. I didn’t see it coming but I wasn’t focusing too much on their situation.

Alan Shearer furious
The Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer has blasted the proposals for the Super League and wants the big six banned, saying to Coral: “These twelve clubs dropped a huge grenade on the sport with this announcement.
“The Premier League should respond with a grenade of their own, and say, ‘OK, you’re going to be banned from the Premier League from next season, that’s how they should deal with this.’
“These clubs want to have their cake and eat it, they think they can play these Super League games in midweek, and their domestic leagues at weekends, but I hope the leagues say no, that’s not happening.
“I also hope that clubs such as Bayern Munich and PSG – two clubs that are definitely in the elite right now – stick by their decision and remain out of this. Both are hugely successful and I admire their stance, I hope that doesn’t change.”
BT Sport slam plans
BT Sport have hit out at the Super League plans to Broadcast Now, declaring via an unnamed spokesperson: “BT recognises the concerns raised by many of football’s leading voices and fans, and believes the formation of a European Super League could have a damaging effect to the long term health of football in this country.
“As a sport broadcaster showing Premier League, UEFA club football and National League football as well as being lead partner for all the Home Nations football teams, we strongly believe that football makes a significant positive contribution to people’s lives at every level, and this needs to be protected.”
Big six owner would be happy to quit Premier League
Sky Sports News reporter Kaveh Solhekol has spoken to a board member at one of the six Premier League clubs involved in the European Super League plans.
And he has been told that one of the six clubs’ owners would actually prefer to be banned from the Premier League.
“One club owner [of the big six] has said privately that he would be prepared to leave the Premier League if they had to,” he said on Sky Sports News.
“He is saying that the riches on offer are so great, even if we were to be kicked out of the Premier League we would still just focus on joining the new European Super League.

UEFA unaminously vote for new Champions League reform
UEFA’s executive committee has UNAMINOUSLY voted through Champions League reforms to start in 2024.
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was among those on the committee to agree terms on a new 36-team Champions League format.
Borussia Dortmund reject Super League
Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke: “The clubs wants to implement the planned reform of the UEFA Champions League.
“The plans to found a Super League have been rejected.”
Borussia Dortmund will not be a part of the Super League (Image: GETTY)
Ed Woodward quits role
Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has quit his role on UEFA’s Professional Football Strategy Council.
The Red Devils have also left the European Club Association after signing up for the European Super League.
Woodward is thought to have been a key figure in discussions about revamping the Champions League from 2024.
But the United chief has not left his UEFA role following United’s involvement in the breakaway super league.
We, along with other groups involved in flags, will be removing our flags from The Kop. We feel we can no longer give our support to a club which puts financial greed above integrity of the game.

Super League statement
The Super League website reads: “Twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs have today come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.
“AC Milan, Arsenal FC, Atlético de Madrid, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, FC Internazionale Milano, Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid CF and Tottenham Hotspur have all joined as Founding Clubs. It is anticipated that a further three clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.
“Going forward, the Founding Clubs look forward to holding discussions with UEFA and FIFA to work together in partnership to deliver the best outcomes for the new League and for football as a whole.
“The formation of the Super League comes at a time when the global pandemic has accelerated the instability in the existing European football economic model. Further, for a number of years, the Founding Clubs have had the objective of improving the quality and intensity of existing European competitions throughout each season, and of creating a format for top clubs and players to compete on a regular basis.
JUST IN: European Super League: Who would be in the European Super League?
Am told by well-placed source; *Man Utd & RM “ringleaders” *3 US-owned PL clubs “really mean this”, sold on the NFL model of closed league with star clubs/players driving value *others see it more as leverage over UEFA – unhappy new CL format means £ shared among more clubs..
— Dan Roan (@danroan) April 19, 2021
The pandemic has shown that a strategic vision and a sustainable commercial approach are required to enhance value and support for the benefit of the entire European football pyramid. In recent months extensive dialogue has taken place with football stakeholders regarding the future format of European competitions. The Founding Clubs believe the solutions proposed following these talks do not solve fundamental issues, including the need to provide higher-quality matches and additional financial resources for the overall football pyramid.
“20 participating clubs with 15 Founding Clubs and a qualifying mechanism for a further five teams to qualify annually based on achievements in the prior season.
“Midweek fixtures with all participating clubs continuing to compete in their respective national leagues, preserving the traditional domestic match calendar which remains at the heart of the club game.
“An August start with clubs participating in two groups of ten, playing home and away fixtures, with the top three in each group automatically qualifying for the quarter finals. Teams finishing fourth and fifth will then compete in a two-legged play-off for the remaining quarter-final positions. A two-leg knockout format will be used to reach the final at the end of May, which will be staged as a single fixture at a neutral venue.
DON’T MISS
Joel Glazer, Manchester United co-chairman, statement
“By bringing together the world’s greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season, the Super League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider football pyramid.”
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez statement
“We will help football at every level and take it to its rightful place in the world. Football is the only global sport in the world with more than four billion fans and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires.”
Andrea Agnelli stepped down as ECA president (Image: GETTY)
UEFA threat
UEFA said in a statement about the proposals: “If this were to happen, we wish to reiterate that we – UEFA, the English FA, RFEF, FIGC, the Premier League, LaLiga, Lega Serie A, but also FIFA and all our member associations – will remain united in our efforts to stop this cynical project, a project that is founded on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever.
“We will consider all measures available to us, at all levels, both judicial and sporting in order to prevent this happening. Football is based on open competitions and sporting merit; it cannot be any other way.
“As previously announced by FIFA and the six Federations, the clubs concerned will be banned from playing in any other competition at domestic, European or world level, and their players could be denied the opportunity to represent their national teams.”

STAT ATTACK: West Indies’ maiden tour of England, for a Test series was way back in 1928 under the captaincy of wicket-keeper batsman Robert Karl Nunes. A Percy Chapman-led England side thrashed the Windies 3-0 in the three-match series. Since then, the Windies have toured England 21 times and have emerged victorious on 8 occasions. The West Indies’ last tour to England was in 2017 under Jason Holder’s captaincy which the Caribbean side lost 1-2. Hello and welcome to the Live coverage of the opening Test of the three-match series between England and the West Indies.
It’s not as bad as it looks 🤞😂Good morning from the Ageas Bowl! 🏏 https://t.co/m64Q5uxpT3
— England Cricket (@englandcricket) 1594193783000
It seem a long time since international cricket was played, although it’s been just a few months. But the volume of live action we are used to makes it seems like it’s been ages since a bowler ran in and a batsman took strike. The COVID-19 pandemic had put a stop to all sports, and cricket was no different. But the wait is going to get over today. The contest between bat and ball returns in a bio-secure bubble at the Ageas Bowl in England, where the hosts take on the West Indies to set the ball rolling with the first Test of the three-match series. And we, here at Timesofindia.com, are happily back to be with you and paint all the action in words, as it unfolds in Southampton. West Indies arrived in England well ahead of the scheduled start of the tour, as they had to go through a quarantine period before stepping onto the field. It has all gone smoothly so far and ECB would hope the bio-secure bubble remains impregnable. Some significant changes to start with: 1. There will be no crowd and the stands will be empty. The government hasn’t allowed that. 2. England will have a new captain, only for the first Test, though, as of now. Joe Root is away as he is going to be a Daddy again; and in his absence, the ECB has handed over the Test reins in the talented hands of Ben Stokes. 3. The bowlers can’t use saliva to shine the red cherry. That practrice has been prohibited by the ICC as a safety measure against COVID. And there’s lot more, plus details on the above. So without much ado, then, here’s the Match Preview: The wait is finally over as international cricket action is set to resume after almost three months after the COVID-19 pandemic brought the gentlemen’s game to a standstill in March. England will host West Indies in a three Test series. The first Test begins in Southampton on Wednesday (July 8). The second and the third Tests will be played at the same venue – the Old Trafford in Manchester. Both the captains, Ben Stokes (interim England captain) and Jason Holder (West Indies) are ready with their team sheets, the fans are waiting eagerly to tune in to the action on their television sets, the Ageas Bowl is decked up, and both the teams have their eyes set on the trophy. The countdown has begun for the umpires ‘let’s play’. This series will be very keenly watched by everyone around the world. After all it is the first series which will be played with the new restrictions in place. No crowds, a saliva ban and limited celebrations. THE SALIVA BAN – A CHALLENGE FOR THE BOWLERS The ICC has banned the use of saliva on the ball to counter the coronavirus threat. The international cricket body has confirmed interim changes to its playing regulations. “If a player does apply saliva to the ball, the umpires will manage the situation with some leniency during an initial period of adjustment for the players, but subsequent instances will result in the team receiving a warning,” according to an ICC release. “A team can be issued up to two warnings per innings but repeated use of saliva on the ball will result in a 5-run penalty to the batting side. Whenever saliva is applied to the ball, the umpires will be instructed to clean the ball before play recommences,” the release said. Though bowlers and fielders can apply sweat on the ball, the ban on saliva usage will perhaps make it quite difficult for the bowlers to get movement in the air. The star pacers of England and West Indies – James Anderson and Kemar Roach – are known for their swing and it will be interesting to see how they get movement in the air without using saliva. Former England spinner Monty Panesar recently said that he expects Anderson to be the first bowler to swing the ball without saliva. CLOSED DOORS, NO FANS, NO HIGH-FIVES Cricket without fans, who would have thought that this day would come. But, the series between England and West Indies will be played behind closed doors, with no fans in the stadiums and with multiple health protocols in place. There will be players, umpires and referees, but no fans to cheer their favourite players. There will be no high-fives or hugs or head rubs while celebrating a wicket or when a batsman crosses a milestone. The practice match between Team Stokes and Team Buttler saw James Anderson celebrating, after taking a wicket, with elbow dabs. That will be the new normal during the Test series too. WEST INDIES IN ENGLAND: STAT ATTACK West Indies’ maiden tour of England, for a Test series was way back in 1928 under the captaincy of wicket-keeper batsman Robert Karl Nunes. The last Test series between the two teams was played in January-February last year in the Caribbean. The Holder-led side won the first Test by a huge margin of 381 runs and then pummeled the tourists by 10 wickets in the second Test. England won the third Test by 232 runs, but the Windies lifted the Wisden Trophy by winning the series 2-1 at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia. West Indies pacer Kemar Roach was adjudged Man of the Series. He claimed 18 wickets in 3 Tests (6 innings) at an average of 13.85. Roach will be eager to produce and encore when he grabs the red cherry in Southampton. INTERIM CAPTAIN BEN STOKES England’s 2019 World Cup-winning hero Ben Stokes will be leading the home team in the opening Test in place of regular-captain Joe Root, who has taken leave to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. Stokes has never led England in Tests and will be seen in the leadership role for the first time in his career when the first Test begins on July 8. Stokes is one of the key players in the England team who has the ability to turn a game with his match-winning knocks and magical bowling spells. It will be interesting to see how impressive he will be as captain. PREDICTIONS According to former England cricketer Roland Butcher, the Windies might have an upper hand going into the series. “First of all, the West Indies have really a good chance of winning a series. Let’s not forget, England in England are a phenomenal side. They have played no cricket so far this year. So, everyone started afresh. For West Indies, they have a high chance of winning the series. Their bowling is amazing but their batting should be of high quality,” Butcher told Timesofindia.com in an exclusive interview. “The Windies batsmen need to at least put 300 plus totals in order to have a chance. Their bowling will do the rest. Put 300 plus total and England will be under pressure. That’s what Windies should do. In England, spinners play a big role when the pitch is already in use or some cricket has already been played on that. Since, this will be a fresh start, spinners might struggle. Spinners are not going to be effective,” Butcher, who played 3 Tests and 3 ODIs for England, said. On the other hand, former England spinner Monty Panesar said the series will be a contest between the Windies bowlers and the England batsmen. “The weakness, where it lies since Alastair Cook’s retirement is England’s batting. Their top six isn’t that great. I think it’s a great opportunity for the likes of the top six to get some runs and show that, but then Windies bowling is strong. Windies bowling is much stronger than their batting. They’ve got Kemar Roach. He is an amazing bowler. He has done well in conditions in England. He will be a key player in the Windies team,” Panesar said. “Holder as captain and a player is really good. He is a good all-rounder and his bowling is very handy in these conditions. He can get extra bounce and score runs as well. So, I think it will be Windies bowlers vs England batters. With Joe Root not there, it could be a perfect opportunity for West Indies to really stamp their authority,” the former spinner said. England Squad: Ben Stokes (c), James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Dominic Bess, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler (wk), Zak Crawley, Joe Denly, Ollie Pope, Dom Sibley, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood. West Indies squad: Jason Holder (c), Jermaine Blackwood, Nkrumah Bonner, Kraigg Brathwaite, Shamarh Brooks, John Campbell, Roston Chase, Rahkeem Cornwall, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Chemar Holder, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Raymon Reifer, Kemar Roach

Tottenham confirm one positive test in Premier League’s fifth round of coronavirus testing | Football News
1197 tests were conducted during the fifth round of Premier League coronavirus testing; Tottenham say the individual is “asymptomatic” and will “self-isolate for seven days”
Last Updated: 03/06/20 4:47pm
Premier League players have now undergone five rounds of coronavirus testing
Tottenham have confirmed they have received the only positive test for coronavirus from the fifth round of Premier League testing results.
The fifth batch of tests took place on Monday and Tuesday this week.
A statement from Tottenham read: “We have been informed by the Premier League that we have received one positive test for COVID-19 following the latest round of testing at our Training Centre.
“Due to medical confidentiality, the individual’s name will not be disclosed.
“They are currently asymptomatic and will now self-isolate for seven days, in line with Premier League protocol, before undergoing further testing.
“We shall continue to strictly adhere to the Premier League’s Return to Training protocol, which ensures our Training Centre remains a safe and virus-free working environment.”
It follows the fourth-round results which were published last weekend, in which there were no new positive tests indicated.
A total of 12 individuals tested positive for COVID-19 out of 3882 from the initial four rounds.
All 20 top-flight clubs, who have now returned to close-contact training, are continuing to adhere to the latest medical advice from the Government and Public Health England to enable a phased resumption of sport in the UK, as a return to Premier League matches behind-closed-doors approaches.
March 5 – Pre-match handshakes banned in the Premier League. March 11 – Man City vs Arsenal is first Premier League game suspended; Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid the last top level game played in England. March 12 – Man Utd, Wolves play away Europa League ties behind closed doors, Rangers host Bayer Leverkusen in front of fans. March 13 – Football suspended following an emergency meeting between PL, FA, EFL and WSL April 15 – SPFL clubs approve plan to end the Scottish Championship, League One and league Two seasons. May 15 – League Two clubs vote to end the season with immediate effect. May 17 – Premier League players and staff tested for COVID-19. May 18 – Scottish Premiership curtailed, with points per game determining league positions and Celtic named champions. May 19 – Premier League clubs return to socially distanced group training. May 25 – Women’s Super League cancelled, with title and relegation to be determined. May 27 – Premier League clubs vote to resume contact training.
The Premier League released the following statement on Wednesday regarding the latest test figures: “The Premier League can today confirm that on Monday 1 June and Tuesday 2 June, 1197 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, one has tested positive from one club.
“Players or club staff who test positive will now self-isolate for a period of seven days.
“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency. No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.”
If any players from Manchester City or Arsenal, and Aston Villa or Sheffield United return positive tests, it would almost certainly rule them out of the respective teams’ fixtures scheduled for June 17.
‘Project Restart’ rules require a player who returns a positive test to remain away from group activities for 14 days (subject to the return of a negative test).

West Ham manager David Moyes says playing friendly matches will help his squad’s preparations for the Premier League restart
In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News on Friday, Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said test results from the first three rounds had been “reassuring” and the number of positive cases were at an anticipated level.
Testing will continue on a twice-weekly basis as the resumption of the season moves closer.
PL clubs to meet on Thursday
Premier League clubs will discuss a number of outstanding topics over the logistics of Project Restart at a shareholders’ meeting on Thursday, ahead of a second due to be held on June 11.
The use of neutral venues – which could affect up to five games including the Merseyside derby at present, is on the agenda.
Ongoing questions about the prospect of scrapping relegation, using five substitutes – as the Bundesliga has adopted since its restart – and whether clubs can expand their existing 25-man squads to deal with the intensity of the last nine games of the season are all due to be discussed.
So too will the topic of VAR, which has proved a polarising topic in its first season in the Premier League. FIFA has given leagues the opportunity to scrap its usage upon their restart, but the Premier League wants to keep it – as clubs believe the integrity of the competition would be compromised if VAR was not used for the entire season.

Cricket Australia cannot fix problems with Darren Lehmann in charge

Cricket Australia cannot fix problems with Darren Lehmann in charge
What a cop-out. What a disappointment. So, the coach did not know his captain and his deputy were hatching a plan to cheat? How about the bowlers? They must have been surprised when the ball started reverse swinging, then.
Even if James Sutherland and company do the right thing on Wednesday by banning Steve Smith and David Warner for a year, Australia have got this badly wrong already.
There is no way coach Darren Lehmann should have kept his job. This is a cover-up.
Darren Lehmann has escaped unpunished and will continue as head coach of Australia
Steve Smith is likely to face a significant ban but Lehmann will remain in place
The nasty, arrogant, aggressive, old-school culture of Australian cricket needs to change and Lehmann epitomises that. He played a major part in creating it after Australia had ditched Mickey Arthur in 2013. Lehmann is the architect of all that’s gone wrong.
The coach allowed Smith and Warner to hurtle out of control and become enemies of the sport. He was complicit, at the very least, in Warner becoming vice-captain in 2015 against all sensible judgment. It could even have been his idea. That was the moment it all started going wrong.
Remember, too, that Lehmann called Sri Lanka ‘black c****’ during his playing days. He also went on radio while coach of his national side and told Australia supporters to abuse England’s Stuart Broad until he cried. It was virtually an incitement to violence. The warning signs were there for Australia but they ignored them.
James Sutherland, CEO of Cricket Australia, speaks to media about the ball-tampering scandal
Sutherland says the coaching team will remain in place after initial findings in an investigation concluded they had no knowledge of the plot to tamper with the ball
The people who should be crying now are lovers of the game in Australia, who have been so hurt and horrified by what has unravelled in the last three days. Truly, this has become one of the biggest scandals in cricket history.
It says everything about Lehmann that he has not resigned already. He should have fallen on his sword the moment TV showed him on his walkie-talkie telling 12th man Peter Handscomb to get on the field at Newlands and tell Cameron Bancroft his attempt at ball-tampering had been rumbled.
Clearly Lehmann was a popular figure as a player. You only had to listen to the reaction of former bowler Ryan Sidebottom on BBC Radio 5 Live after Sutherland’s weak utterings to know Lehmann was extremely well regarded during his days at Yorkshire.
But that was then and this is now. This was Australia’s big chance and they have blown it already, even if they run Smith and Warner out of town on Wednesday.
Things won’t change significantly until Lehmann’s contract runs out after next year’s Ashes series in England and he will presumably walk away scot free.
Warner, pictured at the airport in Cape Town, will be left out of the fourth Test vs South Africa
Captain Smith flew to Johannesburg but will return to Australia on Wednesday
Cameron Bancroft, at the centre of the ball-tampering storm, will also return to Australia
Australia did get one thing right. Tim Paine is, according to one observer close to the situation, ‘just about the only decent bloke in the team’. Unless they went outside and appointed someone such as George Bailey as their Brendon McCullum figure, Paine was the only viable option as the new captain.
What a rise this is for Paine. Not long ago he was playing for Banbury in Oxfordshire and only a year ago he came close to packing it all in to go to work for cricket ball manufacturer Kookaburra.
His surprise recall for the Ashes has now led to him being charged with sorting out this sorry mess. Good luck with that, Tim.
When McCullum changed the culture of New Zealand cricket, he was assisted by a coach in Mike Hesson who sang from the same song-sheet. Lehmann is just full of bum notes.
Australia should have appointed Ricky Ponting as coach on Tuesday. It is a no-brainer. And if not him then Jason Gillespie, or see whether Trevor Bayliss could be coaxed away from the last 18 months of his England contract.
Instead, they have paid lip service to the crisis and let Lehmann get away with it. Cricket Australia have failed the first significant test of whether they are serious about repairing their shattered image.
Tim Paine is, according to one observer, just about the only decent bloke in the Australia team

England vs West Indies, Live Cricket Score, 1st Test, Day 1: The long wait is finally over. After more than three months of hiatus, the live cricket action is finally back on the television screens as England host West Indies for a three-match Test series. The first Test will begin today at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, with Ben Stokes' men taking on the side led by Jason Holder. Joe Root is not the part of the squad for England for the first Test, as he attends the birth of his child. The two teams took part in an internal warm-up game to prepare for the Test, which will see significant changes in rules owing to coronavirus pandemic. The most talked-about is, of course, the ban on the usage of saliva, which is likely to impact bowlers as the game proceeds. Here, you can find the full ball-by-ball updates from England vs West Indies, Live Cricket Score, 1st Test, Day 1 from Ageas Bowl, Southampton. LIVE STREAMING
