Engagements vs. Cost on Clothing - 1st Year
NOTE: To be consistent, the count for number of engagements post-marriage was determined by the same person (Tim O’Donovan) for both 2011 and 2018.
For clothing costs, I strongly recommend reading what UFO No More wrote and how they calculated these numbers. The total cost of spending is incomplete as bespoke pieces, or similar pieces are unidentified and no included.
CAMBRIDGE (2011)
Date of Marriage: April 29, 2011
Including the day of her marriage, Kate spent 247 days as a part-time working royal in the year 2011.
William: 90 engagements as a part-time working royal, while working full-time as part of the Royal Air Force.
Kate: 38 engagements in 2011, 4 + 34 (see below for breakdown)
Kate had 6 engagements prior to her wedding.
November 16 - December 31, 2010 - 2 engagements, which includes official engagement interview
January 1 - April 28, 2011 - 4 engagements
April 29, - December 31, 2011 - 34 engagements as a part-time working royal.
2011 Numbers
38 engagements in 2011
14% = 34 engagements as an official part-time working royal / 247 days married as a part-time working royal.
3% = 4 engagements prior to wedding / 118 days prior to wedding
Per UFO No More, Kate’s wardrobe for 2011 is €61,603 for 95 identified pieces (over 38 engagements, my own commentary).
Averages to €648 per identified piece.
Omits 47 pieces from total costs due to unidentified pieces, and prices that are bespoke and/or undetermined. Therefore, 142 new pieces.
Averages to €1,621 per engagement.
With inflation, averages to €1,978 per engagement - If I want to be super duper uber extra conservative in calculations, I included an inflation rate of 22% to match 2011 to 2018 spending power (Calculator Used).
SUSSEX (2018)
Date of Marriage: May 19, 2018
Including the day of her marriage, Meghan spent 227 days as a full-time working royal in the year 2018.
Harry: 193 engagements, as a full-time working royal.
Meghan: 121 engagements in 2018, 25 + 96 (see below for breakdown)
Meghan had 29 engagements prior to her wedding.
November 27 - December 31, 2017 - 4 engagements
January 1 - May 18, 2018 - 25 engagements
May 19 - December 31, 2018 - 96 engagements as a full-time working royal.
2018 Numbers
121 engagements in 2018
42% = 96 engagements as an official full-time working royal / 227 days married as a full-time working royal.
18% = 25 engagements prior to wedding / 138 days prior to wedding
Per UFO No More, Meghan’s wardrobe for 2018 is €479,048 for 256 identified pieces (over 121 engagements, my own commentary).
Averages to €1,871 per identified piece.
Omits 68 pieces from total costs due to unidentified pieces, and prices that are bespoke and/or undetermined. Therefore, 324 new pieces.
Averages to €3,959 per engagement.
*If I omit Meghan’s Cartier Reflection Wedding Bracelet & Earrings, it averages to €2,256 per engagement.
*Meghan’s Mirror says that Meghan’s Cartier Reflection Wedding Bracelet & Earrings could possibly be a gift, but they didn’t specify anything or reasoning as to what their speculation is based off of. There has been no confirmation that this is a gift, therefore I believe this should be included. But for fun, I omitted this piece with a note. Kate’s acorn wedding earrings commissioned by the Middletons, at an estimated £15,000 is not included because it is a confirmed gift paid by her parents (non-royals).
We believe these pieces were gifted to Meghan to celebrate her wedding day – a lovely gesture to add some sparkle to such a memorable and historic outfit. The price tag for these pieces – over $220,000 USD for both pieces – might make jaws drop, but it is likely that they were a generous and loving gift from a wealthy friend, foreign royal, or relative of Meghan or Harry’s.
Resources Used:
2011 Post-Marriage Engagement Count (for William & Kate’s counts)
2018 Post-Marriage Engagement Count (for Harry & Meghan’s counts)
Wardrobe spending for a first year royal (strongly recommend reading this first)
Meghan’s engagement period, official duties count
I used Gert’s Royals for the number of engagements Meghan did during her engagement period. For Kate’s numbers, I looked through William’s Official Court Circular and searched for articles and pictures to confirm that Kate was there with him. Both Kate & Meghan’s pre-marriage engagements are not posted on the Court Circular.

The Writing Medium You Don’t Know About
In several of my YouTube videos, I discussed the different mediums creative writers could experiment with to tell stories. I went over categories like film, television, comic books, poetry, web serials, and so on, but there’s one category I wanted to discuss further.
When I say “medium,” I’m not referring to genre, or even writing type (such as blogging or copywriting). Instead, I’m talking about the media form you use, such as writing a book versus a film, or a web comic versus an epic poem. Though storytelling is an old art, the way we actually tell stories is evolving all the time. Some of these mediums are relatively new, having only come into existence within the last two decades. After all, much of the mediums we know and love now - web comics, web series, or web serials - only, as their names imply, exist because of the relatively recent birth of the internet.
The medium which hasn’t gotten mainstream attention, though, despite having an ever growing community, is the Sims story medium. Most creators writing plot lines for their characters do so out of fun, but if you’re making characters, planning plots, and putting together narratives, you’re a writer.
It’s strange, because nobody refers to the authors of Sims stories as “writers,” despite the fact that’s what they are. Most writers posting online learn quickly that few care when you post your chapters or share your characters - unless you’re offering writing advice, or you’re famous, you can end up ignored.
Yet the Sims story category seems to be an exception to this on some level. Creators share snapshots of their OC’s, obsess over their OC’s wardrobe choices, and post original story lines...and people love it. If you tell a Sims story, people will actually give your story a chance.
It’s kind of like writing fanfiction - there’s a built in fan base, but the difference with the Sims community is that they’re engaging with your characters, your world, and your story. Other than the Sims packaging, it’s your original content.
I make this post because I want to open writer’s minds to the possibilities there are for your work. There are so many mediums open to you, and I encourage you to experiment with them all - especially if you’re in a creative rut.
Writing Sims stories does come with some barriers to entry, if you’ve never touched the game before. For one, there’s the steep cost of the expansion packs when taken together. For another, there are the vast swaths of mods you’ll need to download to populate your world with the furniture, clothes, props, and hairstyles you’ll need to populate your paracosm. Finally, there’s the learning curve. You’ll have to learn how to use poses, how to build sets, and how to dress your characters (this last one sounds simple, but every character should have a distinct style and colour palette). The most advanced creators even add their own lighting and photo shop their pictures, but plenty of popular creators just stick with the game’s default look too.
This medium won’t be for everyone. I only mention it because seeing the work people have put out has opened my eyes to what storytelling can be. There is no right or wrong way to tell a story. Some writers put out novels through a traditional publisher, while others share content through video games (even before the Sims, Rooster Teeth - also known as the creator of the RWBY show - was using Halo to tell stories through it’s Red VS Blue series).
Experiment. Find what you love. Then stick with it. You don’t have to write novels to call yourself a fiction writer.

Page 27: Meeting the in-laws might be a little complicated for newly engaged Shailene Woodley and Aaron Rodgers because the Green Bay Packers QB is famously estranged from his Chico, California-based family -- in 2016 Aaron's younger brother Jordan Rodgers exposed the rift while competing on The Bachelorette and at the time, fans blamed Aaron's then-girlfriend Olivia Munn for turning him Hollywood but the trouble continued after their 2017 split -- now that he's with Shailene, Aaron doesn't want to bring her into that toxic atmosphere but Shailene who once called her own folks super f**ked up is not deterred and she is encouraging Aaron to let bygones be bygones but he's not ready
* Melissa and Joe Gorga's marriage troubles will play out on the new season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey but their issues are even worse behind the scenes and they've been butting heads as Melissa's career continues to skyrocket so she's distracted with work and doesn't have time for Joe and he feels neglected and he isn't one to hold back -- it doesn't help that the Envy boutique owner was rumored to be getting close to another man -- the couple is trying to work out their issues for the sake of their three kids but Melissa may be done
Page 28: Cover Story -- George Clooney and Brad Pitt: The Breaking Point -- fights, jealousy and other women -- the former besties had a major falling out and now mutual friend Sandra Bullock is desperate to reunite them -- George and Brad have barely spoken in eight years and they've definitely gone their separate ways and Brad's ex-wife Angelina Jolie played a big part in the demise of their friendship because Angie felt George took Brad away from her and their kids -- Amal Clooney found Angie unbearable and that was kind of the point of no return for Brad and George -- George is struggling to regain his luster as a director while Brad is out there winning Oscars

Local Competition
With used book sales, analyzing local competition is a little bit tricky. Businesses offering the same or similar products or services vary quite a bit. Seemingly the three top competitors for me would be:
- An independent seller with a limited stock of used books (very similar to what I’m doing) - A somewhat established independent book store with a modest supply of new and used books and a few other novelties - A chain big-box store with multiple locations, nation-wide shipping and several other types of products (home decor, toys + games, fashion, etc.)
shopbooksonline/Books Galore The smallest operation I’m competing with, shopbooksonline has a very small online presence. Their website is minimal and simple but not as user-friendly as a simple website ought to be. The business is listed on Google as “shopbooksonline” and that is in the URL but he heading on the website is “Books Galore” so the branding is a little confusing. Although they offer delivery, it seems to be to a very limited local area (for instance, my home is a 15 minute drive from the business location but was deemed too far outside the delivery area.)
It seems to be a home-operated business meaning they can breed a more personal relationship with their customers. There seems to be a focus on the quality of the books, with a particular callout that although the books are used they are in excellent condition (no worn spines, scribbles, folds, etc.) The books seem, for the most part, priced very competitively with other independent book stores/big-box stores.
The business seemingly has no social media presence and there are no reviews available for them aside from one uncredited testimonial on their website. Again, the small size of the business allows for a personal connection/direct contact with business owner, with phone and email of the business owner listed on the website.
The Book Wardrobe For a smaller independent book shop, the website is quite impressive. There’s a good searching/filtering functionality, a nice home page with well-curated book lists, a page detailing availability of upcoming book orders, etc. There are however pages of the site that are just incomplete (”About Us” page has headings but none of the actual blurbs or photos that are mentioned.) Although the search functionality is impressive, the database seems to include a lot of results that are missing associated images and are not in stock or available for order from the store.
They have positioned themselves as a cozy, quaint shop with an emphasis on their local community appeal and imploring their customer to support small/independent businesses. There are very few independent book stores in my city and the surrounding area so they are certainly filling that niche. They have overwhelmingly positive reviews on Google and Facebook, sitting in the 4.7-5 range, though there are under 25 reviews in total. The staff does engage with its customers through reviews and on social media adding to the “community” feel of the business.
In terms of pricing, they are comparable to their big-box counterparts. They are upfront about shipping times which vary between 2 and 10 business days depending on the availability of the books. Their shipping costs are a bit higher than other larger book retailers which typically offer free shipping depending on the size of an order.
They are quite active on social media and have a decent following. They seem to be engaging with customers and asking questions and most of their posts focus on upcoming products, marketing, promotions, etc.
Chapters
The website is fully mobile optimized and they have an accompanying app available. It’s a colourful, feature-heavy site (wishlist, rewards program, etc.) Although it’s an impressive website it is quite buy with a lot of links, text, etc. It is positioned primarily as a book store but books are seemingly no longer the main focus with fashion, home decor and toys/games having equal standing on the website/promotional material.
They have taken the time to have particular social media accounts for each location and my nearest location/competitor is quite active on social media (Facebook, twitter, Instagram). Even as a big box store, they have quite impressively made it a point to promote local authors and show solidarity with the Brampton community. They also seem to post community, charity and event relates posts almost as frequently as marketing, sale promotions, etc. The particular location has positive reviews on Google and Facebook (4.6 on both). The only pitfall here is that as it’s a large chain of stores, one negative experience at a particular store reflects poorly on the brand as an entirety.
They are well-stocked and able to order in what they don’t have with relative speed. They are priced accordingly with new vs. old books and their shipping costs are comparable to other big-box stores. They offer free shipping on purchases over $35 which is a definitely value add for customers doing online orders.

Animation Vs Live-Action: Which Is Right For Your Project?
When it comes to deciding between animation or live-action video, there are a lot of factors that should be considered. For example: What do I want the viewer's experience with my project? Will this particular format suit our company’s branding?"
You might think there are wrong or right answers when it comes to video creation, but the truth is that both have their merits. It all depends on what you want your content and audience members learn from this project- whether it's something personal like how a person deals with stress in her life as well as informative such aspects of climate change they're struggling not only environmentally; mentally/physically she’s having trouble too because everything around seems so unstable? You decide which direction will make most sense for YOU!
We have compiled a list of the pros and cons for both video formats, so you can make an informed decision.
Costs of Producing Video Content
First things first – let’s talk about money. Whether you want to make a short, low-budget video or go all out with an in depth production plan for your business idea and need more than 15 minutes of footage; it's important that whatever format you choose is as cost effective as possible without sacrificing quality of workmanship (or getting overcharged).
If we're talking strictly length: Short videos can be done within budget constraints while longer projects require additional investment which could result from launching high ticket affiliate products like software development packages on commissionable contracts but beware -these are not necessarily cheaper options if there isn't enough time before launch!
The idea of animation being the cheapest option is a misconception. It might seem like you can just grab some video equipment and quickly make your movie, but actually creating intricate graphics that are cased in 3D requires state-of-the art technology which could cost more than expected!
The costs of creating an animation can be higher than those for a live-action video, depending on the complexity of your project. And we haven’t even touched upon pre-production planning stages such as scripting and storyboarding which are often required before putting together any kind of scene in animated films.
The financial drawbacks of live-action are many. For one, you need to think about insurance and wardrobe for your cast members which can be expensive without using office space as set or ropes in colleagues from other departments willing enough to do some acting on demand.
Animated Video Content Pros
Animation is a versatile and creative way to tell your company’s story. With different styles, formats, or animation styles available for you to choose from there are endless possibilities in video marketing that can be explored with this medium.
Video marketing can be a complicated process, but it doesn't have to feel overwhelming. Hiring an agency with experience in video content will give your company the flexibility and expertise needed for success.
Animation is a great way to condense information into bite-sized chunks. By using animation, it's easy for the viewer (and sometimes listener!) to digest complex and abstract concepts in an entertaining format that will hold their attention from beginning until end.
When you're presenting data in a video, it's important to think about what kind of animation will best make your point. Animation can help with knowledge retention by 15% -- so if there are lots of complex graphs and charts involved then an animated format may be for the job.
Animated videos are a great way to tell stories. They can be made quickly and easily with the click of a button, so you don't have any negative impacts on your time constraints like other media might do. Plus they're really easy for last-minute changes! You'll never regret investing in this type of animation because there's always something new coming out that will inspire creativity or get people engaged again - just check YouTube trends today.
These very quick updates will also benefit you in the long run. Animated video content can last for years, so it's best to start with an updated version of your product rather than producing a new one every time there is something worth updating.
Animated Video Content Cons
This is why you should always include that human touch in your content marketing strategy. Animation can be great for promoting physical products or services, but it might not work so well if what’s being promoted has no tangible aspects of itself whatsoever - like an app on a phone.
As you know, different audiences have very specific needs and expectations. In order to be sure that your video will resonate with the people who are most important - namely those viewers at home – it's essential that their particularized interests/goals also come through in content marketing strategies such as voiceovers for videos created specifically by advertisers themselves (such as commercials).
Creating an animated video can be a time-consuming process, depending on its complexity. If you're in need of one quickly and have no other options available to use as production equipment, it might not work out well for your content because there are lots of things every filmmaker must think about before they even start filming.
Animated videos are a great way to get your message across quickly and without running afoul of copyright laws. A good idea is not always enough when you're developing content for an entire channel, though; pre-production planning helps make sure every aspect goes exactly as planned so the process can be more successful overall!
Pre-production plans tend towards detail in order that creators know precisely what they want their animated video or series about before too much time has passed spent creating it--especially because there isn't room left over on site.
Live-Action Video Content Pros
The power of live-action video content is an undeniable reality. Real people advertising a tangible product has been proven to be highly persuasive when marketing products or services, especially with how shareable videos are nowadays! You want your target audience as much involved in it so they can't help but react and take action on what's being presented - which means you need someone who looks like them delivering this message for maximum impact.
The following is an example of a live-action video.
A: With the flexibility to play with viewers’ emotions through authentic, instructive content and help them envision your company culture, what better way does one sell their product or pitch business? This gives you more credibility in not only selling but promoting as well because it promotes who YOU are!
One of the biggest advantages to live-action video content is that it doesn’t take as long. Whereas with animation, every detail must be built from scratch before production even begins; in contrast you have all physical props and people needed for a quick shoot on site which dramatically reduces time spent prepping ahead of schedule or finishing up post processing later (if done at all).
If your project needs very little in terms of casting and apparatus, a video camera on your mobile phone can do the trick. This may not seem like much at first glance but it has huge benefits that would be hard to come by otherwise; including being able to create high-quality products without spending too much time or money.
Live-Action Video Content Cons
A live-action video is also a challenging project because it takes more time and effort in post production. If you want to film an additional scene, or change dialogue from one part of the footage for another then this would require all new shots which could be difficult at best given how quickly things move when filming outdoors without sound equipment present.
Why do you want to go through the trouble of renting out more film days? It's not like this is going to be an easy process. Plus, all that costs money! Animations are simpler and quicker--plus they can be done in a matter of minutes with our software as opposed to live-action videos which take much longer because it takes being able edit video content by hand (which isn't something everyone has time for).
With so many people involved in the production of your video content it can be overwhelming. You'll need to hire crew, cast and equipment for each aspect that carries a cost; not just when you're filming but also afterwards if needed.
Successful sourcing of the right talent can be one of the most stressful parts about filmmaking. It's important to understand what you want your video to achieve, because if it isn't clear then there won’t ever really be any progress made and we end up stuck wondering where things are going wrong without knowing why this happened in advance.
Final Thoughts
We can help you understand your brief and devise an effective video to reach your target audience. We have years of experience in condensing complex, abstract subject matter or personifying products with personality for more engaging content that will engage viewers on all levels - whether it's professional-sounding verbal communication from one individual about their company/product line; dramatic reenactments following narratives we designed especially tailored towards different audiences like children’s programming (with educational lessons) where they show how things work through trial & error until achieving success at last.
We are a leading animation studio in Toronto. Our services include 2D and 3D animation, storyboarding, character design, visual effects and more!

[Rant-warning!] This is too funny. The woman they advertised as THE one of the people. With a dodgy, sorry, underprivileged background who would understand the 99.9% and win them over. The feminist mixed woman who would "represent" (oh the joke! She hasn't represented anything but boho WASP). THAT grown-ass, "media savvy" woman, rocks up, wearing: (i) a SINGLE earring £415 (ii) another SINGLE earring £114.21 (iii) a pair of nondescript textile ankle boots £594 (iv) woolly check jacket £360 [P1]
(v) jeans £175 (vi) handbag £295 (vii) umpteenth tie-coat in Darth-colour £1350 = TOTAL OUTFIT TALLY £3303.21 [!]. Three thousand three hundred and three pounds + change. If you didn't know it, this is a good £1000 over the average MONTHLY salary for a 99.9-percentile with 5-9 years of work life under their belt. Let's bump that up to 20 years of work experience: nope, that outfit's still £100 over. Sweet fact: the average teacher earns £2080-ish/month. [P2]
Feel free to double check at (e.g.) Monster. co. uk “Average Salary UK”. The data was updated on Jan 16 2018. If the engagement photo wardrobe snafu was x2 the average annual UK salary, this little tailor made Welsh outing for Meg to tourist at showcased her ability to drape herself in more than what most people earn in A MONTH. And still managing to look unkempt, out of theme and all over the place. So this is Meg 2.0? Man. She sure sucks. [P3]
Really don’t give the square root of two flying figs what outlandish, hip stuff she’s wearing from what luvvie celeb-cum-designer [sic!] and that like £1-5 out of several hundred or thousands go to an ickle charity that sounds good. The contradiction of obscene spending on silly luxury items vs charity is inane! She overloaded with “signal dressing” and completely lost the plot. A more put together look, fewer items, lesser cost but a stronger message would have been more REAL. [P4]
Rant away!
This is what I mean when I say that she goes a bridge too far. I think the Marks & Spencer jumper in Brixton was a good idea...but then she went overboard with all the references in Cardiff.
It’s what she did with the hand-holding, the yoga pap walks, the US Weekly leaks...a little is okay, but then she goes completely overboard, and it gets to be too much really fast.
The “group hug” in Cardiff went really well. Wanna bet that we get tons of similar situations at their next event?

Pregnancy Belly Band vs. Maternity Belt
Are you pregnant and finding that your pants don’t button anymore, or even zip?! Instead of spending a fortune on maternity clothes, fit into your favorite jeans even longer with a pregnancy belly band and/or a maternity belt. A belt or band can completely transform your pregnancy and maternity look easily by allowing you to wear your pants unbuttoned and/or unzipped without them falling down.
As your belly grows, so does your discomfort. In addition to extending the life of your pre-pregnancy wardrobe, you can get the added bonus of extra support for your growing belly, helping relieve that ever-present pain that most mothers have experienced. While bands and belts are similar products, they have some major differences. Let’s break down these differences so we can find the perfect product for you and your needs:
Band Vs. Belt
A maternity band, aka pregnancy belly band, is mainly designed for proper coverage and to extend the life of your pre-pregnancy wardrobe. Somewhere during your second or third trimester (it varies!), you will reach a point where your favorite jeans won’t button anymore, soon followed by the inability to zip. Here comes a maternity band to the rescue! It allows you to wear your pants unbuttoned and/or unzipped by providing a thin and sturdy layer of coverage that covers the closure area of the pants. Maternity bands do add some light support, but if you are experiencing back pain or sciatic issues, a maternity belt is a better option for you.
A maternity belt can double as a belly band, but it also lifts and supports your tummy, taking pressure off of your back. They aren’t as lightweight or streamlined, but they can offer some much needed relief if you are experiencing any of the following issues:
sciatic pain, pelvic pain, and/or round ligament pain,
pain related to being on your feet a lot,
gained more weight than expected,
pain during working out / exercise,
expecting twins,
and more!
Belts can double as a band if worn underneath your clothes, or they can be worn on top of your clothes. They can also be worn after birth for extra support while your muscles, ligaments, and joints heal.
If you are just looking for something to extend the life of your pre-pregnancy wardrobe, we would recommend a band. However, the added support of a belt can be a lifesaver, especially during your third trimester. Something to keep in mind though: a pregnancy belt or band shouldn’t be worn for more than 2-3 hours at a time. This gives your body time to strengthen itself, while also providing relief in physically demanding situations.
Pro Tip: Take care of the skin on your growing belly by applying a belly lotion to help prevent stretch marks. Our top pick is this one by Burt’s Bees.
Ways a Belt Can Help You
Using a band or belt has many different benefits:
Decrease Pain. A study published in Spine Journal reported that 71% of women reported lower back pain and 65% reported pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy. Pregnancy is definitely not for the weak of heart! The use of a belt can help relieve some of the stress that the body is exposed to during pregnancy such as sacroiliac (SI) joint pain, round ligament pain, and sciatic pain.
Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain occurs because of the release of relaxin, an appropriately named hormone that causes hip joints to become loose and less stable in preparation for birth. A belt can help stabilize the joint and support the region.
Round ligament pain is caused by extra pressure and weight on the ligaments that support the growing uterus. While this pain is temporary, it can be unbearable and a belt can help relieve the pressure on the ligaments.
Sciatica due to a herniated disk during pregnancy is uncommon, but sciatica-like symptoms are common and are normally associated with lower back pain.
Provide external cues for posture. “Sway back” is an appearance during pregnancy that is due to the extra weight being carried in the front abdomen combined with stretching and weakening of the key core muscles that support the spine. A belt can help facilitate proper posture by supporting the lower back and torso. This encourages correct posture and helps prevent overextension of the lower back.
Can be worn after pregnancy for added support. Following birth, it is common for moms to experience decreased core strength, especially if a Cesarean section is performed. A belt can provide additional support for the abdomen and lower back, decreasing discomfort while the muscles and ligaments that were strained and stretched during pregnancy try to heal. Remember: a core support garment is a temporary postpartum fix and it does not heal the underlying condition. Overuse of the product can “turn off” the muscles underneath, causing increased weakness in the long term. If you are struggling with core muscle strength, we recommend talking to your doctor about other options such as physical therapy.
Provide gentle compression during activities. Imagine going for a run without a sports bra on. Sounds miserable, right? Well, the same principle applies. A gentle compression can help support your belly during physical activity, therefore reducing discomfort with movements such as jogging and jumping.
Engage in daily activities (such as exercise) more comfortably. Exercise during and after pregnancy has many positive health benefits and this perk has been reported in a variety of journals and studies. Unfortunately, many pregnant women are unable to exercise due to pain and discomfort, but a belt can help relieve discomfort and allow more regular participation in physical activity.
Important Tips
Only wear the garment for 2-3 hours at a time (or less) to prevent over-dependency. As mentioned earlier, the added support can cause the muscles to “turn off” and this can result in prolonged muscle weakness. It’s important to use a belt as an aid, and to simultaneously strengthen your core so that you may once again become independent from this type of device.
Consult with your doctor before using any type of pregnancy belly support garments or devices. While there are many benefits, it’s important for you and your doctor to decide if it’s right for you to use a belt or a band. For example, too much compression can impair circulation, and it can cause negative effects on blood pressure. It can also contribute to heartburn and indigestion.
Belly bands and belts are a temporary fix and should not be used as a permanent fix. Is is important to address the underlying dysfuction. If you are struggling, consult with your doctor about the possibility of physical therapy to help with pain and discomfort during and after pregnancy.
What to Look for in a Good Product
Easy to Clean. You’ll love your belt and/or band so much, you’ll end up wearing it every day for weeks on end. This means cleaning should be a breeze. The last thing you need is to handwash something every few days; look for a garment that is machine-washable.
Expense. Buying a belt or band shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg. They are usually very affordable.
Comfort. Your band/belt should be able to keep your pants up, but not be overly tight. It should make you feel good and keep your pain level manageable.
Versatility. Some bands come in different colors. If you’re going to wear your belt on top of your clothes and are still going to stay somewhat stylish, pick a color that matches most of your wardrobe.
Closure Type. Some use velcro closures, which are easy to operate but can get snagged on certain clothing materials. Some are hook and eye closures, but these can be a joke when your pregnancy fingers look like sausages.
Mom’s Top Picks
We’ve tried to help you out by assembling a list of the top products for both belts and bands. See the following articles for reviews and guides: Top Maternity Belt to Support Your Growing Belly and Passenger and Best Pregnancy Belly Band to Keep You in Your Favorite Pants Longer.
Finding the Right Size
Some garments are one size fits all, but some may have a recommended size based on weight or hip size. If your belt and/or band fits properly, you should not even be able to notice that you are wearing one besides the feeling of the compression. It shouldn’t scratch, slide off or squeeze uncomfortably; the key is that it should be snug but never painfully tight.
Let’s Review
A maternity band is designed to allow you to wear your pants unbuttoned and/or unzipped, therefore extending the life of your pre-pregnancy wardrobe. While a band can provide some minimal support, that isn’t its main function. On the other hand, a maternity belt can also function as a band, but is also designed to support the weight of your growing belly and passenger. But both garments have a solid list of other benefits such as, but not limited to:
back support,
aid in relieving discomfort,
hold your pants up,
save money by not having to buy as much maternity clothing,
can be used after birth for added support.
Carrying a tiny human inside of your heavy belly can leave you struggling to do daily tasks without the help of a little extra support. Choosing a band or belt that’s right for you can help you find comfort in a variety of situations you may encounter; this will help your body face the demanding changes its required to handle.
Pro Tip: If you buy two, you’ll always have one on hand, even when you’re washing one of them.
FAQ
Do they help with pain?
Yes. During pregnancy, your body starts to product hormones that are meant to relax and prepare your body for birth. Unfortunately, relaxing certain muscles and ligaments that are supposed to be supporting your growing belly results in pain and/or discomfort. Making matters worse, your center of gravity and posture will change as well. A band can provide some relief, but a belt is really designed to help take some of the pressure off of you. This can help relieve pain such as lower back pain, round ligament pain, sacroiliac joint pain, and sciatica.
Are they uncomfortable?
No. Or at least they aren’t supposed to be. If you find your belt and/or band uncomfortable, you might need to try and different size or style. But these devices have been around for a while, and the advances over time have made them more comfortable. Some moms report being oddly conscious of the odd feeling of not doing up your pants, but this feeling should quickly pass. These garments may take some getting used to, but usually the support and relief it provides greatly outweighs the initial discomfort.
Will it hurt my baby?
No. As long as your wearing it properly, it shouldn’t hurt your little passenger.
Do bands prevent stretch marks?
No. Unfortunately there isn’t really anything that can prevent stretch marks. We recommend applying a belly cream, but there’s nothing a belt or band can do to help your stretching skin.
Can I wear it to bed? Experts recommend not wearing your band more than 2-3 hours at time in order to prevent further issues with core strength and support. Instead, try a pregnancy pillow for nighttime relief.
