60! nice number :>
60. Blood Bank – Bon Ivor
they say, staring down at their slippered feet, “why do you even want me here?”
luz jolts. the gold-bright lines of her all mix and meld, spread out in wild patterns the collector’s never really seen anybody else have, ‘cept maybe back way forever ago when there were a bunch of trees and a bunch of witches and all of them together sort of were like this huge spiderweb. luz alone is a spiderweb. the golden lines of her that go to mari to hunter to flapjack-there-too and how it’s so blinding they can’t really look at her head-on.
“why would you say that?” luz asks.
her gold pulses when she says it. king claims it means something, that he sees gold but gold-like-thoughts, like so many words. the collector looks and still doesn’t know the language.
“cause i hurt a ton of people.” the collector fists their hands in their lap. “cause i know i’m only here ‘cause firefly wanted it. ‘n the rest of you don’t care so much.”
“i care,” luz says, quietly. the collector turns away from her. out the big window in eda’s room they can see outside where king and mari are chasing each other, mari a maned wolf, and hunter flapping after as a cardinal, all their gold mixing together like finger-painting thrown across a canvas ‘cause someone thought yeah let’s do it without anymore thoughts. “i think—i think you’ve been alone too long. and i want you here.”
they say, “oh.”
luz nudges them “wanna join the others?”
they shrug, hug their arms around themself. “dunno.”
luz offers a smile. “that’s okay. we can sit here until you feel better.”
and they don’t. but it’s sort of nice, to have someone in their corner.
DISCUSSION
you found another collector piece!!! oh my god i love this kid so MUCH.
i said a lot about the collector back with uhhh whichever number the other collector one was lol but this gives more on their dust-seeing ability! it also gives a little hint to how witches and palismen work! the two fun facts about witch-palismen pairs i'll give is that they form symbiotic relationships with palistrom trees, and that they are to demons what termites are to cockroaches.
the collector also mentions how king can read dust--the big difference between titans and collectors is that titans can read/understand dust, but not manipulate it, while collectors can manipulate dust, but not read/understand it. so :) fun!
but yeah. luz n the collector would be friends i think....they can understand each other! out of all the owl house kids luz n the collector get along best without any weird baggage. mari's not like. patient enough to sit with them lol and tends to gravitate to hunter who just feels very uneasy about them. and flapjack would chill w luz but is dead and shares a body w hunter so </3 luz is left on her own a lot.
anyways. my most favorite starchild who i love SO much
#ask#toh#luz noceda#the collector#daemons#daemon au#i write#collector my beloved#i love posting these bc#almost all of them are like. late s2/s3 so you get all the like.#endings without any clue what the emotional buildup was#and i think its SO funny that way.#look at my lore. read it.#<333 anyways will keep doing these so long as people send em!#and a grove of palistrom to you

- GHOST PERI AU -
(AKA Petrified!Peri because that name is cool as FUCK.)
REFERENCES ALSO AVAILABLE HERE!
REGULAR COLORS / HIS BODY [NOT GHOST]
GHOST COLORS / HIM AS A GHOST
SO. You may be asking, "what happened to him?" And I am here to EXPLAIN! :]
This AU is still a fairly [pun unintended] big WIP, so some details are still all over the place/undecided, and some may change over time; constructive criticism, opinions/thoughts, questions, are all appreciated!
The general idea is, well... divergent from the finale. What if, after the chip is grabbed and Hazel, Wanda, [and maybe Cosmo? I don't recall if he goes with them/ends up somewhere else] go to fix the wand, Peri explodes. And it gets undone when Hazel wishes to fix Fairy World. Buuuttt... not quite!
It wasn't her 1 Millionth Wish that she used up on Fairy World— which is why it Doesn't Quite Fix Him Going Kaboomey. But I imagine that having 1Mil Wishes had a mild influence on What Happened and why exploding DID get fixed... sort of. [I need to brainstorm specifics on this.]
ANYWAY.
Peri looks GENERALLY normal most of the time, except for, well, *gestures at reference.* Outside of THAT [cracked wand, cracked crown [crack hidden by the glow], slightly off color pallete], there's some other stuff that's just a Hint of Wrong.
Like coughing up confetti and/or rainbows [without any other sign of magical backup [which he can't experience anymore because he did technically already die via backup.]] And sometimes the funny silly wacky expressions that happened during buildup [big ol' eyes/pupils, star shaped pupils, funny faces [like when he was talking to Dev.]
Throwing this in here. Sometimes he just stares like the TBH Creature. It's kinda silly kinda funny. I need to make a Petrified!Peri TBH emote because that fits well.
I was ALSO thinking about the idea that sometimes limbs can detach [the ghost fairy in that one ep is what gave me this thought], mostly for expressive purposes/fun silly purposes. It can be seen in this image here! Still DEBATING on this, though.
ANYWAY.
ANYWAY.
Cosmo and Wanda Don't Know He Died [because of not being right there] But something Is Off. Peri probably doesn't at first either until they [themself] put it together through context clues, and then they're like, "ooohh no, mom and dad probably don't know I exploded!" And he gets REALLY nervous about them finding out because that'd be A Lot and he doesn't want to Worry Them [because... he fucking died.]
So. There's a lot of him just trying not to Act Suspicious. Which only makes them both concerned! I have so many silly funny interactions between them that I imagine, actually!
Like...
Peri: *Talking. Suddenly... star pupils!*
Wanda: Um. Sweetie?
Peri: Hey do you see that?
Cosmo: Oooh, see what?
Peri: Over there! *Points.*
Cosmo + Wanda: *Looks over.*
Peri: *Disappears.*
WHICH. YEAH. SO. GHOST FORM. They're completely hidden when they're actually a GHOST, and has no wand/wings when they're a ghost, either [they do have wings normally, I just forgot to include them in the reference.] And I imagine whenever they poof into their ghost form that they leave a tiny bit of confetti behind!
ALSO.
He reassigns himself to Dev on his own [who didn't forget after the finale.] And his magic is kind of fucked up. Cause he's DEAD and look at his fucking WAND. So wishes kinda get fucked up when granted a bit sometimes ehehehaha...
ANYWAY.
I am also dumping my Peri headcanons onto him. They're transmasc nonbinary and use he/they pronouns and they're also aroace! :3
PLEASE. PLEASE send me any asks if you have any questions! You don't have to ask to draw them, either— just tag me in any art if you ever make any, please! :]

Having Amber know for weeks affected fans view of her and why it was not done well.
In the tags on a reblog of one of my posts, someone mentioned that the scene where Amber tells Mark she knew he was a hero was bad writing and I low-key agree. I plan on doing an analysis on that specific scene later, but today I wanted to get into why the way the writes handled that situation just wasn’t great.
Keeping in mind the context of who the writers are can somewhat explain the thought process behind the decision. The creators of the comic book said themselves that's the comic book very often pokes fun at superhero stereotypes and tropes. One of the main stereotypes in superhero comic books is the main non-super female love interest being upset with the male superhero love interest for constantly flaking on her/being unavailable trope. In this trope the conflict is typically resolved when the female love interest is told or discovers in the moment usually by so accident that the male love interest was the superhero the whole time and the revelation is suddenly supposed to negate all the negative emotions that the female love interest was put through and everything just ends up fine.
In today's time it wouldn't matter if he was a superhero or not. He still made her feel terrible, he still lied. I do think women today wouldn’t allow that to excuse all the hero’s behavior especially when it was evident that said behavior was hurting them.
We know the writers like to poke fun at stereotypical superhero comic book tropes and plot points, and a good way to do that it to utilize trope subversion.
Trope subversion definition:
A subversion has two mandatory segments. First, the expectation is set up that something we have seen plenty of times before is coming, then that set-up is paid off with something else entirely. The set-up is a trope; the "something else" is the subversion.
Pure trope subversion vs Partial trope subversion:
Executing a “Pure trope subversion” means to follow the blueprint for “Trope subversion” to a tee. The writer sets up the story with essentially no hints that the outcome will be anything but traditional, and then proceeds to suddenly turn the outcome on it’s head in a way that was unanticipated. In the case of the “Partial trope subversion” it’s the opposite. The writer will drop subtle hints and clues teasing that the outcome will not be traditional for the trope. The hints must be subtle because the writers goal is still to trick the reader into believing that the traditional outcome will occur.
The main problem with them writing it as a pure trope subversion is that Amber ends up looking really bad and that people already didn’t like her as they wanted Eve to end up with Mark.
The set-up of the secret identity relationship trope leads us to believe that the female was mostly if not completely unaware that their male love interest is a hero. They often times are suspicious, but the dots don’t usually get the chance to connect before it’s all revealed. Going with that type of trope set-up leads the audience to believe that it’ll end like it always does. The girl will feel sorry for her actions and completely forgive the hero (even though I don’t find think that’s realistic), so instead of it going in that direction they subvert it. They have the female love interest (Amber) figure it out herself and silently not be in the dark for a period of time till it’s revealed that she knew. This is fine unless it’s written as a pure trope subversion because the traditional trope buildup includes anger over canceled plans, late arrivals, and feelings of neglect. That anger makes the female love interest look completely irrational in the case that she knew! (Though perhaps she was not truly angry over those things after she discovered the truth, but she was angry with him lying and couldn’t tell him that without saying she knew, so she expressed her anger through those situations instead of the main reason??? Hmm, I just thought of that and that’s an interesting theory for another time.) Anyways...
I found that the trope subversion making Amber look so bad to be a glaring issue that should have been weeded out in the writing room. They had to have known how it would be perceived. There’s no way they wouldn’t. The only logical reason they’d do this is if they plan to go through with what I suspected was happening at the beginning of the show, which would be that the writers are telling us that Amber is not Mark’s endgame and that she’s just taking up space until Mark and Eve eventually get together. The only problem with that theory is that they had Mark and Amber get back together at the end of the season which is another trope subversion. In the usual love triangle bait-and-switch trope the first female love interest the male superhero chooses gets booted out to make room for the second girl in the love triangle who he was apparently supposed to be with the whole time, however the writers didn’t got through with that trope. They instead subverted it (whether purposely or not) by having the original couple get back together and setting it up in a way that shows the couple potentially growing stronger, rather than him staying single and eventually ending up with female love interest number 2. The writers even took the subversion a step further by setting the outcome up in a way that showed potential for female love interests 1 and 2 to actually start a beautiful friendship instead of a rivalry.
I’m honestly confused by what the writers wanted us to perceive. If they wanted us to root for Amber and Mark why set them up like that? To prove that they can move past it? But who will support the relationship after everybody now hates Amber? It is contradictory, so I’m very confused. I did write another post speculating that though Amber knew Mark was a hero, she did not know he was Invincible. The theory does shed more light on the situation and it resolves a lot of issues, but it still doesn’t negate the fact that the use of a pure trope subversion in this instance made Amber look really bad. Especially when people would sooner find ways to cancel her, rather than attempt to understand why she did it. To understand someone does not mean to agree with or support them, but it reminds you to humanize the other person, a value we are all owed.
If the writers had not done a pure trope subversion and instead decided upon a partial trope subversion the fallout would not have been nearly as bad. If they had done a partial trope subversion they could’ve allowed Amber to be more patient in some of the later scenes, while showing that even though she’s patient, she’s also very upset. It would show more understanding on her part, however I think Amber was actually already understanding of his situation. What she did not understand was the lying and how it seemed that he didn’t even care enough to lie well. She was hurt that he didn’t trust her and during their relationship she was constantly questioning whether or not he was serious and if he actually cared about her and honestly we questioned it too as an audience! Imagine how frustrated she must’ve been those 5 months out of 6 when she didn’t know why he was lying to her.
Amber and Mark didn’t have any relationship issues that I noticed aside from his secret identity. Their dynamic was interesting to watch in my opinion because Mark wasn’t phased by Ambers weird sense of humor and her having essentially no filter, in fact he embraced it and was also snarky in return. He liked that she has strong core beliefs and clearly enjoyed spending time with her. Even though Amber is sarcastic and pokes fun at Mark she finds his enthusiasm to be endearing and often laughs with and smiles at him. Heck, she even approached him first! They’re just two teenagers dating and it’s nothing too exciting like it’s usually portrayed in media. They text, go on dates, make out, enjoy the others presence without really needing to talk, it’s just nice normal dating stuff and it’s realistic and lowkey, and I really liked seeing it. Upon my first watch of the show I liked Amber and Mark together, but I didn’t see the chemistry. I think it’s because everything about their relationship needed to happen in the span of 8 episodes, but also that the reasons why their attracted to each other are very subtle. They don’t shove it in our faces, they just place it there and if you caught then you caught it, if you didn’t then you didn’t. It took me re-watching the episodes a second time to realize why Mark and Amber enjoy being with each other. The body language speaks volumes when you also pay attention to the little things that go on between them. I’ll probably make a whole other post about it because I think it’s something to talk about, but yeah.
In conclusion either the writers truly didn’t realize the outcome of their choice, the writers knew the outcome and did it on purpose to set the audience up to root for Eve and Mark, the writers knew and set it up in order to later on grow/redeem Amber and strengthen her and Mark’s relationship by having them over come it, or they didn’t think it’d be a big deal due to assuming that the trope subversion would take everyone by surprise and that we’d like it.
(If you made it to the end, I’m impressed cause this was long. Also, shoutout to the person who first brought up this topic in the tags. I didn’t realize I felt some kind of way until I started typing and couldn’t stop. It was honestly kind of cathartic😄 I didn’t tag you cause I didn’t know if you’d like that but, thanks for unintentionally giving me the motivation to write this!)

It’s Just PR - Shawn Mendes/Harry Styles (Part Four)
hello, i know its been a long time, but it’s been a rough couple of weeks. i hope you enjoy:) LOVE GETTING FEEDBACK
PART THREE
I spent the rest of my day at home. I didn’t feel like going out much after that. Shawn stood there shocked for a few minutes before he actually left. He finally took the hint when I muttered “we’re done” and left him and stomped upstairs.
I don’t want him anywhere near me. We’re done. It hurt to watch him hate me, think so easily that I could cheat. That I was the one who ruined our relationship, when we both know that that was far from the case.
The next few days, I keep lowkey for the most part. Days spent going between home and the studio. I meant what I said in my speech. There’s all sorts of inspiration in heartbreak right now. Heartbreak has always been my biggest motivator, it only took two days for me to come up with a new single. It’s fun and powerful, I love the feeling of the song.
“This is brilliant, Y/n.” Joan grins as she listens to the track that I wrote and recorded the previous day.
“I want to release it.”
“Right, we could do it next month after-”
“Nope, I want to release it tonight.” I am not backing down to Joan. If I release it months from now it defeats the point of how I feel right now.
“Y/n, we haven’t done any promo for it. We can’t just release it tonight.”
“Yes, we can. It’ll be a surprise for the fans. We can do promo post-release.”
It takes a little more convincing before Joan agrees. Lots of other artists don’t have much notice before releasing a song. I will be one of the many with a midnight surprise. Also, it’s a message to Shawn in a way. Just looking at the title, it might clue him in to how I’m feeling. If he didn’t pick up on it already. Shawn and I are done.
Over it.
“Alright, we’ll release it tonight.”
“Thank you.” I leave the studio and walk myself to my car. I drive home and think for a while. I know that this is what I want. I always feel better about my emotions after a song. Dealing with the whole Shawn Camila situation was too much. Now, I feel slightly more at peace.
“Hey, what are you doing tonight?” I ask, not bothering to say a hello to the person I called.
“Not much of anything. I actually just got home from the studio.” Harry answers. I don’t have to see him to know that he has a smug grin.
“Would you be interested in going out with me tonight?” I feel my cheeks flush out of nerves.
“Are you asking me on a date right now?” I can hear his tone is teasing.
“I am.” I bite back a smile. I don’t want to move too fast, it’s only been a short time, but I’m looking forward to moving on with Harry.
“I would love to.”
“Great. I’ll pick you up at 8:00.”
I hang up before he can argue me on it. I’m sure he would want to pick me up, wherever we were going to end up, but I like the idea of driving. I like the control.
I make it back home with enough time to take a shower and throw on a casual yet cute outfit. I don’t exactly have a plan for what to do, but I know that I want to spend time with him. He makes me feel better with all of the other things going on around me, he’s safe. He makes me feel safe.
I don’t even get both feet on the ground when Harry is already walking out his front door, a proud grin on his face and what looks like a pep in his step.
“Hey-”
Harry pulls me in for a hug before I can say much else.
“Hello, love.”
“Ready?”
“Where are we going?” Harry walks over to the passenger side of the car.
“I have no clue if I’m being completely honest.” I glance over with a smile to catch him already staring, “I kind of just wanted to spend time with you.”
“Well that sounds like a pretty good reason to me.” He looks around a little and I keep driving without a destination, “Take a left.”
“What?” I laugh, taking the turn anyway, “Where are we going?”
“That’ll be a surprise.” He sends a wink my way and continues to give me directions until we end up with the beach on the horizon.
“The beach?” I grin. I’ve always loved the ocean, I have no clue what beach this is, but it’s beautiful.
“F’course.”
We both get out, I kick off my shoes. I carry them in one hand, Harry manages to take my other. We wonder down the beach, letting the water reach our toes every once and awhile. Eventually when our legs tire, we plant ourselves down in the sand.
“So, how are you doing?” He turns to actually look at me. I stare forward towards the sand for a few seconds before finally glancing his way.
“Is it bad if I say I’m actually doing okay?”
“No, it’s okay to be okay after everything, although I am surprised to get your call so soon again.”
“We’ve always been on that very thin line between friends and more, we’ve creeped closer and closer throughout the years. Until Shawn at least, but now? I feel like tonight we take the leap.”
“I would love to take the leap. Jump headfirst.” He smirks.
“Yet, still take things slow.” I smile, placing my hand on top of him. His hand has managed it’s way to my thigh.
“Slow, works. I can do slow.”
I roll my eyes knowing that Harry has never done slow before. He’s always been all in, we’re similar that way.
“Can I tell you a secret?” I smirk.
“Obviously.” He bumps into my shoulder with his lightly.
I grab my phone for the first time all night to look at the time.
“In a little less than two hours, I have a song dropping.” I can’t wipe the smile off my face.
“No kidding? That’s amazing.” He nods, “Any chance I could get a sneak listen?”
Shaking my head, “Joan is already mad enough with me making her release it tonight, and sneak previews and she’ll have my head. Plus, isn’t half the fun the anticipation?”
Harry and I walk back to the car, finding a food truck along the way to stop and eat. It’s messy, fun, and perfect. Seems to be a commonality in my relationships. It’s pitch black out, we sit in the car in silence for a few seconds. It’s been such a peaceful night, I don’t think either of us want it to end.
“I don’t want this night to end.” Harry mutters, practically reading my mind. His hand is playing with mine absentmindedly.
“Me neither.”
Harry’s hand slowly drifts from my hand to my face. He grazes his thumb across my cheekbone, pushing back a piece of hair that had managed to slip. I look up to meet his eyes that are already trained in on me.
“Can I-?”
“Yes, please.” I interrupt.
We both lean in, across the center console of my car. I can’t fight off a smile, thinking of how he makes me feel like a teenager again. A young girl, giddy and blushing in the car waiting in anticipation.
“Why are you laughing?” His voice a whisper, warm on my face.
“Nothing.” I shake my head, leaning impossibly closer, “Are you gonna kiss me now?”
His dimples make an appearance at my tease.
“Are you gonna stop laughing right when I’m about to kiss you?”
I nod slightly, finally our lips meet each other. His lips are soft and warm, his hand grips a little tighter on my cheek. I’m happy to lean in closer, furthering the kiss. All of the buildup and the years of being friends, yet somehow always almost more, are worth it.
He presses kisses down my jawline and creeping down my neck. Both of us are breathing heavy at this point.
“Hey-I thought we were taking things slow.” I laugh, pushing him back slightly.
“Right, slow.” He presses one more fast kiss to my lips and leans back into his seat. He runs his hand through his hair and gets his breath back.
“Do you know what time it is?” Harry asks, his cheeks red slightly, “It’s midnight.”
“It’s midnight.”

Chaos;Child review
Steins;Gate; it’s one of the most popular visual novels ever made, for very, very good reason. While I had played my fair share visual novels before, namely Ace Attorney, Danganronpa, and Zero Escape, Steins;Gate was still a very special experience for me that instantly launched me into the wider world of visual novels. More than anything, though, it made me extremely curious about the rest of the franchise around it; not just the sequel to it, Steins;Gate 0, but the whole rest of the Science Adventure series. For a bit of a rundown, the first game in this series, that many fans of Steins;Gate very likely have no clue about, was a title called Chaos;Head. Focusing on an extremely reclusive and paranoid high school student named Takumi Nishijou, who has his life thrown into chaos after witnessing the latest in a series of murders known as the New Generation Madness, it was an interesting story with a heavy focus on delusions, creating an interesting experience that, while still ultimately clear and conclusive, leaves you in the dark the majority of the time in regards to just what is happening, and how much is even real. While a good effort all around that served as a great base for Steins;Gate, it was ultimately held down by a lot of things, from smaller things like a pretty generic and unmemorable artstyle and mostly unremarkable voice acting, to much more noticeable things, from the slow, unfocused plot, to the underutilized cast of characters who never come together as a group, mostly just dropping in and out on an individual basis whenever the plot needs them, to the choice system of the game, the delusion trigger, which allows you to view a positive or negative scene Takumi imagines in response to surprising or stressful situations, being pretty much pointless, only rarely giving a better glimpse into Takumi’s characterization, to Takumi himself being extremely creepy, cowardly, and all around unlikeable, and not getting sufficient development across the story to make up for it, at least until the very last chapter. While it did get an updated version, Chaos;Head Noah, Chaos;Head was nonetheless buried beyond saving by Steins;Gate, not helped by not having an official localization to this day. As the cherry on top, it had a terrible anime adapation that tried to fit a fairly lengthy VN into a mere 12 episodes, completely wrecking the pacing, making the story even more confusing than was intended, and using an entire episode on useless filler to top it off. The reason I went into detail on that is, well, the subject of today’s review; Chaos;Head’s sequel, Chaos;Child. Chaos;Child is in an interesting spot in the series, firstly because as of right now, it’s the only main VN in the series other than the two Steins;Gate titles to have an official localization, and while both Robotics;Notes and Robotics;Notes DaSH are set to be localized this year, it still means it’s the only other title around to experience until those come out, at least in an official fashion. Secondly, unlike Steins;Gate 0 and Robotics;Notes DaSH, Chaos;Child is only a thematic sequel, with the cast of Chaos;Head not returning, with the exception of one side character having a fairly prominent role, and a few references and cameos for others. The main cast is otherwise a clean slate, and concepts of Chaos;Head are taken at a different angle. Aside from helping keep things fresh, it also allows it to take its own pace with introducing and explaining the main concepts, making it still cohesive even without having gone through Chaos;Head, though it’s still connected in important ways. The main point is, you don’t have to go through Chaos;Head to enjoy Chaos;Child, which is very good considering the various problems surrounding Chaos;Head. Now, the question is, is Chaos;Child worth going through by itself? The short answer is, absolutely, yes. It is a fantastic experience on par with Steins;Gate, and I would recommend it with all my passion. You can get it on PS4 or Steam. Seriously, go for it. As for the long answer, well, buckle in, because this’ll be a ride.
Chaos;Child takes place in 2015, 6 years after a devastating earthquake that utterly wrecked the ward of Shibuya during the events of Chaos;Head, leaving many physical and mental scars on the populace. Though Shibuya has since been rebuilt, a series of bizarre murders begin to occur on the days of the New Generation Madness, the series of killings that gripped Shibuya in the days before the earthquake. These killings, dubbed the Return of the New Generation Madness, leave the citizens of Shibuya morbidly captivated, much as the original incidents did, and unfortunately leave the police with no clues as to the identity of the culprit, seemingly leaving them to continue their crimes unopposed. Enter Takuru Miyashiro, a senior at Hekiho Academy and president of its newspaper club. Takuru was orphaned by the Shibuya earthquake and adopted by Wataru Sakuma, a doctor who has a foster home in the same building as his clinic, though Takuru has moved out into an RV by the time of the game due to an argument with his foster sister, Nono Kurusu, the student council president and vice president of the newspaper club. With the help of the other members of the club, Serika Onoe, Takuru’s reckless and rather dense childhood friend, Shinji Itou, Takuru’s confident best friend with an interest in bizarre murders such as the New Generation Madness, and Hana Kazuki, a mute girl who spends most of her time playing MMOs in the club room, Takuru conducts his own investigation of the Return of the New Generation Madness despite Nono’s concerns for his safety, independently discovering many clues and connections, such as the presence of the mysterious and creepy “Sumo Stickers” at the site of each murder. After taking his investigations too far and stumbling upon the scene of the latest murder, Takuru finds increasing evidence of the killer having capabilities far beyond that of a normal human- and that his discoveries may have put him in danger of becoming the next victim.
While this sounds much like the basic premise of Chaos;Head, in practice it’s very different. In Chaos;Heads, the New Gen murders, though certainly important, mostly just played out in the background, with Takumi rarely directly being involved. By contrast, the murders in Chaos;Child, and the mysteries around them, are the focus of the game, and it’s very worthy of it. The mysteries and reveals around them are downright fascinating, and gives the player just as many hints for them to follow as the characters, making for a very interesting plot to follow. Chaos;Child is also notable for being much, much darker than the previous entries in the series, which weren’t exactly flowers and rainbows themselves. The murders themselves are extremely gruesome and disturbing, the reveals don’t pull any sort of punches, and the majority of the game’s endings lie much closer to the bitter end of bittersweet, compared to, say, Steins;Gate’s endings. While it can get a bit draining by the end, Chaos;Child makes it work, never pushing you to the extent of becoming apathetic despite the horrors and tragedy of the plot, which is owed in large part to the well written and very sympathetic cast of characters.
Everyone in the main cast manages to be interesting, fun to have around, or both. Takuru himself is a very good protagonist, despite having a very unlikeable start. He’s arrogant, reckless, extremely awkward, overly stubborn, and downright petty in a lot of ways, especially regarding his obsession with staying on the “right side” of information, not to mention him treating the murders as something exciting and a way to get famous. Despite all that, he has a lot of development across the game, and starts early on it. He’s also got a much rougher past than some of the previous protagonists, which helps explain how he grew into the person he is.
Some of the other more memorable members of the cast include Hinae Arimura, who, though hyper and friendly on the surface, hides a very sharp tongue and a fairly cynical nature, Mio Kunosato, the exceedingly harsh, obsessive, and resourceful scientist investigating the Return of the New Generation Madness on her own, who makes an interesting contrast to the rest of the cast just because of how completely unpleasant she is, Shinji, who manages to be a much more likeable character than some of the previous obligatory male friends in the series, and my personal favorite, Nono, who despite seemingly being an unfairly harsh big sister type, quickly establishes herself as an extremely caring person, with a lot more emotional baggage than she lets on. A good chunk of the game’s emotional moments involve her, particularly her attempts to fix her very strained relationship with Takuru.
While all the characters make at least decent impressions to begin with, what helps them even further is the additional ending routes, branching off from the normal route depending on specific choices you make throughout the game. Compared to the way Steins;Gate handles its endings, these are full chapters, putting much more focus on characters such as Hinae and Hana, taking the plot in completely different directions. Not only are the stories of them interesting on their own, they do a great job of developing the characters and showing them from different perspectives.
What caps off the writing is the absolutely fantastic atmosphere the game builds. It goes very heavy with horror elements compared to Chaos;Head, and doesn’t skimp in any area. While it’s got the visuals down, the main strength is the buildup, suspense, and narrative description, all of which is fantastically done. Tense scenes go at a steady enough pace to let each small thing sink in, without being drawn out enough that you lose interest, and the much less ambiguous nature on what scenes are real or not makes any shifts of that sort much more effectively jarring. It’s seriously one of my favorite atmospheres in a game, and makes for a great experience for anyone even slightly a fan of horror.
The subject of “fake” scenes brings me to the main gameplay element of Chaos;Child: the Delusion Trigger. Every once in a while, a situation will make Takuru imagine a positive or negative delusion regarding it, with you being able to choose one to view before snapping back to the regular scene like nothing happened. While a decent idea on paper, like in Chaos;Head, it really doesn’t add much most of the time, and despite being your method for accessing the different endings, it really doesn’t tie into them at all. At the least, though, it does a decent job of showing Takuru is much less mature than he tries to appear, and if nothing else, they’re gold mines for random screenshots. They also appear less and less frequently as the game goes on, which helps keep them from distracting from more serious scenes.
On a more technical side of things, visually speaking, I like the look of the game quite a bit. While it doesn’t reach the heights of Steins;Gate in character designs or the general artstyle, though that’s a very high bar to reach for, the sprites, backgrounds, and CGs are all very well drawn on their own, and the designs are at least more distinctive than in Chaos;Head. The visuals also do a large part to help with the atmosphere; while it looks light on the surface, many scenes use lighting filters that do a lot to help the mood, and the CGs do not disappoint when they get serious.
The UI also looks great, and furthers the atmosphere even more. From the shadowy ends of the dialogue boxes moving passively, to the menu screen’s rolling fog, to the odd borders of the screen during delusions, it has a very stylish look.
Chaos;Child doesn’t disappoint on the audio side of things either. Series composer Takeshi Abo puts out a great soundtrack, as usual, with many catchy or atmospheric themes, along with vocal themes that are absolutely fantastic. The voice acting is also very good, with just about everyone giving out a great performance, in particular Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Takuru, Sumire Uesaka as Serika, Sarah Emi Bridcutt as Nono, Suzuko Mimori as Hinae, and Risa Taneda as Mio.
The last thing to mention is that Chaos;Child is a very long visual novel. Not quite as monsterous as some, but it’s still a significant time drain, and while there is an anime adaptation, it is a terrible alternative. While not outright awful by itself, especially compared to Chaos;Head’s anime, 12 episodes is simply not enough time to make the story work. Not only does it have to rush to make nearly every chapter fit into one episode, absolutely ruining the pacing, it doesn’t adapt the other endings in any way, making a lot of the characters come off as way less developed, and couldn’t even adapt the true ending at first, which is just disgraceful. The visual novel is the only real way to experience it. And now that we’re at this point, I suppose it’s conclusion time.
Is Chaos;Child something I would recommend? 100% absolutely. Between the fantastic atmosphere, great cast of characters, and fascinating and emotional story, it is a special kind of experience that proudly stands with Steins;Gate as one of the greatest visual novels out there, in a genre with many fantastic works. It can be a bit slow to start, but once it gets going, it stays an amazing experience.
With that giant rant out of the way, I’m off to start on the last thing in the series there is for me to tackle as of now: Steins;Gate 0. Till next time. -Scout

Easter Smut - #4 - Laito
Laito - impregnation, blood play, rough sex, overstimulation, danger, Low-key Yandere
TW: Mild Blood Play, And a section in which Laito is holding reader too close to a balcony railing with mentions of potentially falling.
In your life, there was an overwhelming amount of uncertainty. And a certain red-haired vampire did not ease that unsteadiness you felt in your life, instead he added to your sense of puzzlement. Your entire relationship with Laito was messy, to say the least. Everything about it was confusing and uncertain, and you never really knew what he was thinking. Hell, you didn’t even know your own feelings towards him. You felt as though you equally hated him as you did adore him. Sometimes he could actually be almost romantic and cute, but other times he was painfully arrogant and cocky to the point where you wanted to push him into the sun so he would burn into a crisp. With Laito, there was no in-between. You weren’t his girlfriend, but you definitely weren’t friends so even the term ‘friends with benefits’ wouldn’t have labelled your relationship correctly. The best you were able to explain it would be “rivals with benefits”, but even that wasn’t quite the case. Nonetheless, even you had to admit that sex with the infuriating vampire was a highlight of that week. It was probably why you felt so helpless when it came to him - because as much as you felt a passionate contempt for him, you were also unable to fight off the equally passionate lust that gathered inside you whenever he seduced you.
You were outside on one of the balconies of the manor, watching the starlit sky shine down upon all in its wake. You adored the night sky and believed it to be the most beautiful and awe-inspiring thing in existence. Unfortunately for you, your serene time would soon come to an end. And come to an end, it did, when you suddenly felt a certain someone’s breath on your neck and ear as a familiar voice whispered playfully, “Here you are~” A loud yelp escaped you as you turned around to face the devil himself - Sakamaki Laito.
A sour frown established itself on your face as you breathed out softly, your breath having been caught when he startled you. “Don’t do that, you idiot.” You grumbled and slapped his arm lightly, not in a malicious way, more so in a you-scared-me-you-dumbass kind of manner. In all truth, you had absolutely no clue where the hell you stood with this man. Or a vampire. Whatever the fuck he was. Laito chuckled, laughing at your fear, visibly amused. “What, you don’t like it when I surprise you?” He questioned sensually, and you could already feel your will to resist him fading into the void. Why did he have to be so attractive..!?
“What do you want, Laito?” You asked, your tone blunt and to-the-point, but you already knew the answer, he normally only came to find you when he wanted to have sex. For the most part, you were alright with this, but recently...you utterly loathed admitting it, and you wouldn’t dare say it out loud - especially never to him, but you were beginning to get more ‘clingy’ and jealous when he was around other girls. It was only natural for you to begin to gain feelings for someone if you fuck them enough but you also knew Laito was a class-A fuckboy, and as such, you doubted he even could love you.
But every time you tried to resist Laito’s advances, you miserably failed. His control over you, and more importantly, your body, was too strong to counter. Before you could do anything else, you felt his cold arms wrapping around your torso as he pushed himself closer to you. You were leaning against the fencing of the balcony, and the fear of falling was strong, but he was caging you and you knew from previous experience that you would be unable to push him away. You cursed the predicament, but you were going to have to trust he wouldn’t push you off this high balcony. At the same time, the way his skin felt against yours was familiar and welcome by you, and it sent wonderful electricity down your veins. Moving so your head was touching his chest as he completely trapped you against himself and the balcony, his lips close to your ear once more as he whispered sensually to you, and caused the desire in your abdomen you often felt around Laito. “You look really cute today…” His words trailed off as his breath kept hitting your sensitive skin, as his tongue traced down your earlobe, the unexpected wetness bringing out a soft, breathy gasp, and you mentally cursed his ability to make you so weak in this moment, as you could actively sense your libido awakening.
“You know,” his voice was unusually gentle, usually he’d seduce you playfully, but without much other emotion, and yet tonight it was...different and you had not a single clue as to why he seemed peculiarly loving, in his own, perverted way. “You looked as though you were craving me before I even came here...with your pretty little ass stuck up in the air as you leaned against the railing” his kisses moved down your neck and said railing was now pressing into your ass and you were more aware of the lethality of this situation than previously. If he dropped you or even gave the smallest shove, you would fade from this world, or at least break half the bones in your body. In the most unusual of ways the danger morbidly aroused you in ways, you didn’t consider it would. As for Laito’s words, they were humiliating, but at the same time, mild degradation was strangely welcome and you were even surprising yourself.
“You looked like a little bunny, waiting to be mated” If his presence wasn’t currently intoxicating you this way, you would have been incredibly offended he was saying such mortifying things. But as it was, at this moment his sultry, sensual words only resulted in your lower half to heat and produce the uncomfortable moisture between the folds of your vagina. No one else could ever bring out this primal side of you as well as Laito had, and the more feelings you got for him, the more power he held over you. You had a feeling he knew what he was doing to you every time he was close to you. It was as if your hazy self was suddenly thrown into a pool of freezing water as the sharp stinging of his fangs piercing through your skin ‘awakened’ you. Once more, a gasp left your soft lips, but now it was louder and a pained gasp as you could feel the hot blood flow down your sensitive neck, only for his tongue to swirl and lick the crimson liquid from your flesh. Before long, the initial pain turned into a shocking ecstasy as you felt yourself breathing louder and gently moaning. It was an odd feeling, to have him drink from you. It had been forever since he’d done so, and you’d honestly forgotten what it’d felt like.
After another minute, Laito pulled away and stared you straight in the eyes, smirking as he licked his ruby-stained lips. The eye contact between you two sent your body into a fiery frenzy. Laito then moved back from you, and your immediate reaction was to be overcome with disappointment at the idea that he wouldn’t fuck you. However, just as you thought he’d turn around and leave, he grabbed your waist and turned you around so you were facing the beautiful sky once more, arms holding onto the railing as surprised sounds left your mouth.
When he pulled open your shirt and revealed your breasts to the evening air you found that the spring evening was a sweet, breezy-yet-warm one, and you were thankful for that. His hands grasped your ass before taking off your skirt and panties, throwing them gods-know-where. You were positive you were soaking at this point, his previous teasing causing a buildup of love juices at your core. His slender fingers moved up your needy pussy as he shoved three fingers in at once, releasing a shrill from you as your moans piled on top of one another. He pumped his fingers in at a fast, steady pace and the tightness in your abdomen formed quickly, his long digits ruthlessly finger-fucking you to paradise. Moments after you cried out a long moan as you came, which only made you even wetter down below, some of your love juices falling onto the stone balcony floor.
Laito stared at you with approving eyes, yet they held certain darkness which you couldn’t see as you weren’t facing him. He quickly unbelted his pants and took his tall, erect member out of the restraint that was his boxers. You were a loud breathing mess, as you recovered from your high, only for him to practically drilling his dick into you, filling you completely from the get-go. He roughly pounded into you, hands on your ass as he held tightly onto you, leaving finger marks that would be sure to stay for at least a couple days after this night.
Your hands gripped onto the railings until your knuckles were the same shade of white as winter snow, sweat dripping down your face and body as the heat was insufferable. His hands moved and brutally grabbed your breasts, fondling them with expertise, before he started to pinch your nipples, aggressively pulling and massaging them. The sensations of the pleasure of being roughly fucked and the sharp pain of having your nipples abused combined and the masochist within you loved every second of this.
Another several minutes passed by, and one of Laito’s hands travelled down to your clit, rubbing it mercilessly, the bundle of nerves sending thousands of pleasured signals to your brain. The amount of pleasure was unlawful, you were certain no human should be able to feel as much painful ecstasy as you currently were. Your mind, a blank slate, the only thing on your mind was Laito, his scent, the feelings he gave you, and the animalistic desire to be fucked until you couldn’t move anymore. You didn’t even try to conceal any of your euphoric screams, no longer caring about anything but the man bringing you so much pleasure.
Laito’s pace became sloppier, as his grip on your hips tightened to the point of pain. He twitched within you and that’s when you felt the heavy flow of his semen fill your fertile womb. He stayed inside you for several more moments before finally pulling out, the mixture of his cum and your juices falling down your thighs and onto the cold floor. You were gasping for air as your entire body ached in overstimulation. The intensity of that sex session was unlike anything you’d experienced before, and it shook you to your core
Laito smiled to himself as he helped you back to your feet properly and then picked you up and carried you to your room, your shirt almost falling off and your panties and skirt lost for the time being. You were sleepy and then you realised a vital fact. “W-wait Laito...you..you came inside me, I, I could get pregnant!” You exclaimed, your voice was soft but full of panic. He laid you on the bed and looked down at your tired, sleepy state with fond eyes, as his eyes moved from your face to your belly. “And?” He bluntly asked, eyes locking back with yours. You experienced a loving gaze you hadn’t ever experienced with Laito before. “I’ll take responsibility, I promise”. Somehow, you believed him as you drifted off to sleep. Soon, he mused to himself, you would be his forever.

OUAT 4X07 - The Snow Queen
Looks like Emma’s facing a real cr-ICE-is in today’s episode!!! XD
As always, the review’s under the cut, so drop on by if you dare! BWHAHAHAH!!
Main Takeaways
Past
A big point in the segment is how Ingrid needs to give up the ribbons in order to get the gloves and urn. Rumple says that with enough emotional attachment, ordinary objects get magical values. When Gerda and Helga protest the exchange, Ingrid points out that the ribbons are a symbol of their love and that their actual love is stronger. The episode frames this as a poor decision, but that’s not a sentiment I agree with. While yes, the ribbons do indeed have a magical value, Ingrid’s right: Their real love is stronger. This is such a big element of other themes in other episodes (Basically EVERYTHING with Rumple dagger and the flashback in “White Out” come to mind), where symbols matter less than the power within and to see the raming reverse itself without any substantive self awareness is a weird choice. Ingrid’s fear of her powers and resolve to be a shut is indeed a problem, but the handling of this red herring solution stands out as an awkward choice. And then it reverses itself again with “we are your fail safe.” The idea of the value of objects over family goes back and forth like a tennis ball during a game of fetch.
And I can’t help but be on Ingrid’s side here. She’s not giving up her sisters. She’s giving up three ribbons so that she can have control over her magic and be able to go out in public with them, rule the kingdom, and just live her life. Their love is still there, but something that’s going to give Ingrid a tangible feeling of safety will be present too. And I feel like Gerda and Helga’s protests are nothing but platitudes.
Let’s also talk about the ending. Gerda, who shows so much love for her sister throughout the segment, grows terrified of her as Ingrid, the only other voice, testifies to her innocence to Helga’s death just before putting her in the urn. Like, had the Duke said something to Gerda either before the scene or during it, the fear would’ve worked better, but as it stands, it’s a weird shift for Gerda that works okay enough, but could’ve been better.
Present
There’s a lot to unpack here about Emma’s conflict. I can’t say that it’s improperly built up. This season and even the last finale have delicately pushed the idea of Emma’s magic still falling short in the face of a lack of a furthering of her education as well as her emotional issues. It’s usually a matter of her underperforming. This though is the first time we’ve ever seen it do the reverse. And I think it’s an interesting thing to explore. Not only is Emma new to magic, but she’s the only person in her family who has it. AND with the presence of a new brother and the Snow Queen manipulating her actions, things can get a little muddied from there. And while it is given a cursory look, there’s no focus to the why of the matter, choosing to try to be about all of these things while not diving into them. I feel horrible for Emma’s situation, so the tone of the episode is captured well and the framing does work perfectly, but the story itself is left kind of flabby.
I don’t do a worst dynamic on these reviews, but if I did, Snow and Emma would be it. Like, Jeez, Snow! Not even gonna hesitate pulling the baby back? Not gonna check on how your kid is feeling because I’m sure to some degree, you’re aware that magic is fueled by emotions? It’s a really shitty moment, but for me, a lot of what sucks about it is that while we’ve received hints about Snow’s apprehension towards Emma learning magic and the fandom has some pretty interesting theories about why Snow is so, we never hear it from the horse’s mouth. For that reason, Snow comes across as really cruel towards Emma for no reason.
On a lighter note in that regard, I used to really hate the outdoors scene with the light pole, finding Snow’s scolding of a terrified Emma to be disgusting, but upon watching it again, given the fact that Snow immediately changes her tone with Emma after scolding her shows very believable remorse. She knows this wasn’t Emma’s fault and that she needs support and love and she knows she failed to give her that. Granted, I’m not a fan of her telling David that the both of them fucked up when David didn’t react negatively to what happened and he even got into the situation to save Emma’s boyfriend (And also played a big role in trying to find her afterwards despite being injured when it really should’ve been the other way around). Like, Snow, that all was totally on you. But as for the initial outburst, I do find that it was handled better in hindsight.
That having been said, while I really dislike Snow’s reaction, I do like the pole scene by itself. It’s never wracking, has some great fast-paced editing, and is sympathetic to most everyone there. It’s as panicked as Emma feels and while I don’t like some of the buildup to that moment, I do like the moment itself and it feels earned enough. There’s a great element of tragedy to the scene too. Emma has tried so hard to overcome her walls and be a part of her family, but because her magic is out of control, she fears that she might not be able to.
As I watch this episode, I’m reminded of why I don’t really care for Robin. I swear I’m not trying to be anti-OQ or anything here, but it does infuriate me that Robin doesn’t even seem to TRY to fall back in love with Marian before getting turned down by Regina the second time. Feelings are valid and I understand that, but the fact of the matter is a person who Robin supposedly cares very much for (Even if the romantic feelings are lessened or gone, Robin would assumedly care about her as a former wife, a person, and the mother of his child) has a frozen heart and is in what is basically a coma and while the only foolproof solution to this lies with him, he’s putting in no effort to even TRY to save her by this point.
And I know what you’re thinking: He does try. At Granny’s, he and Will go over Robin and Marian’s story. And this did have me consider my stance. But the problem is that that’s all he does before just giving up and this isn’t framed as the complicated choice that it is. By all means, Robin, be happy that you love Regina, I’m not telling you not to. But acknowledge the fact that to be with Regina, you’re denying Marian what might be their best chance at saving her. (And the fact that Marian is Zelena of course isn’t a factor here as no one knew that at the time)
Because of all of this, I don’t feel all that sympathetic for his plight and I don’t find my belief that strong for the “code” he was so strongly speaking for in “A Tale of Two Sisters.” I’m with Regina -- that’s completely unfair to her as well as to Marian!
I also find myself a touch frustrated with Ingrid because a lot of the things that she comments on and acts like were her ideas are just random coincidences. I pointed this out, but the results of Emma and Elsa’s investigation haven’t been predetermined, but have resulted from spur-of-the-moment decisions that are usually made by third parties. Ingrid had no idea Emma even still had that video camera, let alone that she would play it and discover her and then investigate the ice cream truck. She had no idea that Belle would clue her into the mirror’s existence or even get that candle. And she had no idea that Emma was dealing with fear from Snow. And at some point OFF SCREEN, Emma apparently tells Ingrid about what happened at the Mommy and Me class or Ingrid brings up that she knows it. That especially irks me here. We see at the end that Ingrid did have a role to play in Emma’s bursts of magic, but because we don’t really see what it was that she did, it’s not effective.
“Sometimes even when you win, you lose.” I’m still annoyed that this is the most we ever got out Will as far as an explanation for his presence. Did Ana die? Did he get caught up in something Lily was doing, since A&E said that his story was related to Mal and Lily’s? At least now that the realms are merged, they can get back together, although their 15-ish years of separation sucks royally. :(
Stream of Consciousness
-Dude! That asshole just fucking KICKED Ingrid! Dude deserves to be BEHEADED!
-I wish the pacing was a smidge slower on this opening. Like, in just a flash, Ingrid discovers her powers, gets called a monster, panics, gets a fast speech, and then wham, things are mostly okay. Like, an additional second so that everyone could process even Ingrid’s powers or the fallen branch really would’ve helped for my money.
-It’s kind of weird how Elsa’s speech to Emma about how her family might look differently at her for her powers, however unintentional, is kind of the tipping point of this arc.
-Ingrid, I don’t want to tell you how to do your evil job, but if Emma hadn’t avoided that icicle, she’d be dead! You already have two dead sisters! A third won’t do you much good!
-Really! All three of them share a room? Granted, it’s a big room, but they’re royals! Not to mention, those beds are fulls at most! You telling me three royals, one of whom is the future queen, wouldn’t have bigger beds?
-Just saying, if I was Elsa, I would’ve followed in my little sister’s footsteps and decked her right in the schnoz.
-”...With your scary face on.” I love how Regina and Henry have that casualness to who they are! It shows how they’re grown!
-Ooh! I see some foreshadowing with Belle saving Killian from the secondary threat (The Shattered Sight Mirror)! Captain Book!
-I love that little flattered gesture Rumple makes when Ingrid calls him the most powerful magic collector in all the land. XD
-The Duke of Weasletown is a fucking creep and Helga is best character for putting him in his place!
-Ummm, I WANT A STORYBROOKE SNOW GLOBE, PLEASE!
-Loving that Rumple smile. Methinks something amazing is coming! XD Or rather, meknows something great is coming! *Rumple giggle*
Favorite Dynamic
Ingrid and Rumple. I love seeing villains interact and in this episode, Ingrid and Rumple do it really well. They act as overseeing deities playing with the chess pieces that they’ve made our heroes into through their manipulations and seeing them talk about circumstances so matter-of-factly is really interesting. I also love how they deal with each other. Watching their deal go through at the end of the episode is like watching a really interesting drug deal go down. Every action from Rumple securing the ribbons to holding onto one of them while waiting for his information to Ingrid whispering what he needs is so engaging! I always love scenes that despite the fact that I know what’s coming, I still get swept up in the action, and that is this episode in spades.
Writer
Adam and Eddy are today’s writers. I feel like this episode really needed more focus in its three main storylines. We’re given hints of character actions and through processes, but none of them ever go all the way. And I genuinely hope that I don’t sound like I’m incapable of putting these pieces together -- I promise you that I do get how these narrative points connect, but my issue is that they’re sometimes not tightly knit enough to support the big character moments and story points that they’re supposed to be able to support.
Rating
7/10. I’ve felt bad with some of these more recent reviews. Sometimes, it’s hard to communicate that despite the problems that I’m pointing out, I am enjoying myself. Like with “Family Business,” this isn’t a bad episode, but it just needs a bit more solidification. There’s a lot of cool ideas to work with here -- an examination of how Emma’s family views Emma’s magic, Robin trying and failing to recapture his love for Marian while in love with Regina, and Emma’s thoughts about her sibling come to mind. But while they dip their toes in that pool, little else is done.
-----
Thank you all for reading! I think I did a better job here than I did with my “Family Business” review, but let me know if there’s something you want more elaboration on!
Shout out to @watchingfairytales and @daensarah!!!! See you guys next time!

The Kingdom Hearts III Reaction
First thing’s first: yes, I got the responses to my initial reaction letting me know I could use L2 to cycle through triangle commands, and oh my god that made things so much more manageable, so thank you.
Gameplay wise, I said what I had to say right off the bat earlier: lot of fun, best version of the traditional playstyle. Gorgeous except for when it’s the most gorgeous. Way more game than I could handle on the margins, but it felt like fun available options I could choose whether to pursue or not rather than overwhelming.
Under the cut I’m gonna talk some broad structural stuff; I’ll avoid anything overtly spoilery, but it would certainly be understandable if you’d rather stay away. Under another bolded sign though I’m going to get into MAXIMUM spoiler territory, so those who just want my basic impressions but would prefer to hold off on more than that until they have their own go at it can know where to get off.
So this game does like 90% of everything I ever wanted it to do, plus so much MORE than I ever would have expected, resulting in a finale even more grand and resonant and satisfying than I might have imagined after nearly 13 years of waiting. The problem is that all that stuff is in the last 8 hours, and it is very, very clear that’s the part of the game Nomura and company actually cared about. This wasn’t interested in being Kingdom Hearts III, it wanted to be Kingdom Hearts III Part 3/3: The Finale after Dream Drop Distance and A Fragmentary Passage covered the other biggies, to the point of as mentioned before critically compromising the beginning of the game. It reached the point where Dream Drop Distance went from just baaaaarely pulling ahead of 358/2 Days to dead damn last in my ranking of these, because it not only set the tone for what went wrong here - even if this succeeded in the end in a way that couldn’t - but sponged off vital reveals and the conclusion to Riku’s character arc, both of which 1,000,000% needed to be in here so this could be a complete sequel rather than in an intermediary story where they were weakened by context.
Long story short, Nomura and Square are going to have to think very, very hard about what kind of a role the Disney worlds are going to play in these going forward, because the enthusiasm for them on the part of the writers is visibly dead. Not across the board, passion clearly went into the likes of the Toy Story and Big Hero 6 worlds, but it could not have been plainer that Monsters Inc. and Frozen were checkmarks being crossed off, perfunctory in a way I genuinely don’t feel the Disney worlds were in the past (though that may be in large part because this time around Sora is literally just there for level grinding, rather than an immediate search for friends, stripping away the central underlying emotional urgency of I and II). It would’ve been alright if there had been a major act break of the sort II had to provide a sense of forward momentum, but as is it really is just marking time while characters other than Sora drive the plot in the background, mostly in the form of catching up with what the audience already knows. They’ll always be a part of the franchise, and obviously the iconic Disney figures in Mickey and the rest will always be central, but unless the powers that be find a fresh new angle I think it’s getting to be time to scale the movie settings back in favor of the main story and original worlds, if not to the extent the Final Fantasy elements have received.
So I spent most of the game disappointed, figuring it would pull it all together for the finale and more than satisfy me, but not enough to retroactively redeem the game as a whole. And then it retroactively went and redeemed the game, because when I say it kicks off in the last 8 hours I don’t mean that that’s where things start getting parsed out in time for the finale. I mean it’s 8 solid hours of climax, physical and plot and character, the most intense and overwhelming of the franchise, answers to real-life-decade spanning mysteries and character resolutions and endgame-scale setpieces and catharsis being delivered just one after the other after the other. It’s the entire emotional underpinning of the game in a single titanic endrun, in an experience and at a pitch I’ve never seen before. Even the parts that should have been set up earlier in the game still have the entire rest of the series and years of anticipation leading into them, and while it’s a shame it had to bank on that advantage, it worked, because when I look back on the game in years to come it’s going to be this that I’ll remember, and when I someday a long time from now play through the franchise as a whole, I’ll go through the parts that previously irritated me with a smile on my face because it’ll just be a charming interlude rather than a dead stop. I can’t put this over II’s more well-rounded experience because of those structural issues, but while 0.2 is maybe the purest expression of intent thus far in the series, its brevity, and the fact that as good as it gets its best isn’t as good as this gets, puts III neck-and-neck with it as the franchise runner-up for me.
Okay, BIGGEST SPOILERS IN THE FUCKING WORLD UNDER THE IMAGE

So being a person who exists online in the 21st century, I had some key images of the ending spoiled for me well in advance, which sucked but was also maybe a blessing in disguise, because if I hadn’t been braced when those last three seconds came...that would have been rough. It was startlingly rough as is, which is odd because as much as I’ve always liked Sora as a character and appreciated the odd way his nature as a Disney hero in a Final Fantasy dark epic makes him a perfect lead and counterpoint, I never realized the depths of emotional investment I’d attached to his specific fate until the rug got pulled out. It would be as blatant a “but there’s no body!” moment as any there’s ever been even without the secret ending and the confirmation on Nomura’s part that Sora will remain the main character, it’s an emotional blow and a setback and a mystery for the others to solve rather than a full tragic ending (and one would have to imagine the characters themselves would believe that and will act accordingly given this entire story was itself about bringing back a bunch of Very Definitely Dead Folks), but it’s harsh as hell even if it’s very clearly the next step in a Master Plan rather than purely blueballing players for the cruel joy of it. Still, even if it’s reminiscent of stuff we’ve seen before, a melancholy-at-best ending is fully within the franchise wheelhouse; if I’m right and there’s one full trilogy of main games remaining in the series (I’m guessing without many if any spinoffs, Nomura’s bosses are definitely going to have his nose to the grindstone to get through the remainder of this thing on a sane timescale so as not to have another...well, this), maybe it’ll fully establish a sad-odd-numbered-ending, happy-even-numbered ending pattern, with IV having a gleeful reunion, V ending with all seeming lost, and the grand finale letting the heroes have their happily ever after.*
Before getting into the gushing praise for the rest of it, the reason this is at 90% of everything I wanted rather than complete: Kairi is bizarrely shortchanged here compared to every other central character, especially given her relationship with Sora is the foundation of the very end and she’s the logical main protagonist for IV. Even her ‘death’ isn’t my issue so much - by the end of the game Sora has rescued literally every other main character from beyond the veil of the afterlife or a living hell in fairly rapid succession, she’s just the last and biggest deal to him personally - as that even a few more scenes with her would have shored up so much. Not that her material isn’t good when she is there, I absolutely do think it was, and the emotional buildup from the series up to this point was more than enough in my opinion to carry her stuff through, but it’s the equivalent of, say, Lois Lane appearing out of nowhere at the end of a Justice League story to provide the impetus for Superman: obviously this works and makes sense because we know how much they mean to one another, but in the context of this as a lone narrative it’s a little out of nowhere. Riku gets it pretty bad too, if not as much so, but he has the ‘excuse’ of having his character arc resolved in Dream Drop Distance. Still though, it means the central trio is scarcely a thing in here the way it was in the past, though it looks like the next game is going to be entirely about getting them back together and hopefully they’ll stay as a complete unit from there on out.
Also prior to gushing praise: if Dream Drop Distance hadn’t happened, it would be so easy to restructure this in a way that would make the whole thing satisfying instead of just a perfect chunk of it. Open the game with Sora and Riku going into the Realm of Darkness to save Aqua, have Sora succeed but in the process of THAT lose his powers (making it a noble sacrifice on his part foreshadowing the end rather than a non-fuckup that the player pays for); Aqua has to recuperate, preferably with Kairi and Lea so they can get more screentime, Sora’s off regaining his powers and tracking down clues to the location of Castle Oblivion since it was under Organization control and therefore hidden, and Riku’s off with Mickey having his DDD arc. Stick the reveal of the real Organization XIII midgame, and keep the finale almost exactly as is. That way, plot and character’s doled out throughout, character screentime is rebalanced, and everything that worked stays working and comes to the exact same conclusion.
Gushing praise time: holy fuckin’ cow, this hit me in ways I did not see coming. The reunion of the other two trios was something I looked forward to well enough but not anything I fully expected to outright bowl me over, but by god they pushed those buttons as hard as they could and made them everything anyone could need them to be. But that was expected, to one extent or another; what I don’t think anyone could have seen coming was, in the final gasp of this saga of hilariously, broadly Arch villains, every single one of them turning out to be a real goddamn human being with understandable emotions and motivations and implied history and arcs. Monsters see the light (with the contextually hilarious exception of the one character fandom MOST wanted to see get a face turn with Vanitas, and even he finds understanding and peace) after a whole series of believing there’s one in the darkness when only one or two major characters had made a turnaround, and it doesn’t just make this game richer, it retroactively improves the entire series thematically and emotionally, as well as setting the stage for more of that approach based on what we know of what’s to come. And action-wise, it really does go for trying to beat II’s last Xemnas fight, and while I don’t know that it manages it in sheer cool thanks to that final laser blocking/dual wielding finale, it I think really does come out on top in the fights leading up to it and the spectacle and the emotional power and the beautiful interface screw (after the shit with the tornado earlier!), nevermind the absolute end where Our Nerd Dad Luke Skywalker** shows up to give his blessing to the franchise and usher out the story as it was.
As for the pair of post-credits scenes: in each instance I had something spoiled for me, but also in each instance not the BIG thing. I knew Xigbar would live and summon the Foretellers, which honestly is not that shocking for me. That he IS one of them, that he’s been putting on an act (one clearly in the shape of his teacher) and been a bigger villain than Xehanort THE ENTIRE TIME? I believe that got a literal gasp out of me, and THAT’S before it turned out that after bullheadedly clinging to the idea that she’s still a main villain for all these years, Maleficent might actually end up a main villain again. And the secret movie? I had the title spoiled - and god what a perfect twist, the most gleefully apeshit moment in the game and already probable best moment in gaming of the year coming back around in a completely serious way to define the future of the franchise - but assumed wrongly that it meant Sora would be in some way ‘reincarnated’ amnesiac as Yozora and needing to be returned to himself. But nope, Sora’s for real out there alive as himself in...something like the real world? Or The World Ends With You, which I understand is at least a lot closer? And Riku’s gonna wind up stuck out there too? And because Yozora’s there it means they’re in some kind of fuckin’ Flash of Two Worlds! situation?! Or if it’s in the same physical realm (which I have to doubt or Sora would rush home as soon as he got a ship) it’s the equivalent of that dope two-part Terra Obscura arc in Tom Strong?! Sora and Riku, trapped in a world where Kingdom Hearts is a Dark, Realistic Modern Urban Fantasy (which, if Sora got here by dying, does...does that mean Gritty Realworld! AU Kingdom Hearts fanfic is that universe’s version of hell? Because that would be beautiful) (did “This is a fantasy based on reality” end up carried over as the logline to Final Fantasy XV from Versus XIII? Because if not, absolutely use it here to keep that gag going) and having to fight their way back to their world and friends, hopefully with Kairi going on her own playable adventure on the other end of the cosmos to find them since there’s no way she wouldn’t be leading the search? And with the Master of Masters waiting in the wings, the perfect villain in general because if Sora is the MOST Disney character in this universe he appears to be the LEAST, and especially perfect here now that Sora’s symbolically if not possibly literally on his turf? Waiting I’m guessing another 3-5 years is gonna be hell (I’m guessing IV’ll be announced next year or maaaaaaaybe late this year because thus far Kingdom Hearts has never gone with no announced games on the horizon longer than the end of the next calendar year, and we’ll see how development goes after that; like I said, I imagine the pressure is on for Nomura), but this could not look more like my shit.
So that’s, after all these years, Kingdom Hearts III: an understandable, maybe unavoidable, but still crushing disappointment that undermined itself narratively before it even began production and ran on a burned-out crew that could never meet the impossible expectations surrounding it. Until it suddenly winks, brushes itself off, and lives up to damn near EVERYTHING on its shoulders in the most incredible ways possible while also transcending its previous limitations as a story right in front of you, and then breaking your heart before planting the seed to repair it and charting a path towards an even more exciting future. All said and done, I liked it a whole lot, and it’ll always be special to me.
* At this point, I really could go for the ending of the whole thing literally being Sora and Kairi walking into the sunset together, with the camera panning up into the sky and text (not mysterious narration like in the past, but old-school Disney-cartoon-style outside-the-world of the story cursive text) appearing to declare 𝒜𝓃𝒹 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓎 𝓁𝒾𝓋𝑒𝒹 𝒽𝒶𝓅𝓅𝒾𝓁𝓎 𝑒𝓋𝑒𝓇 𝒶𝒻𝓉𝑒𝓇. That is the level of closure and myth and satisfaction it’s gotta be building towards after everything thus far and everything to come.
** If you are reading this without having played or watched the game: given I know that’s now in the realm of possibility, no, I don’t literally mean Luke Skywalker showed up.
Yet.
