It gets harder and harder to come back. . My mind goes blank as we are standing at the meat counter at the supermarket, a man loudly bickers to the only employee working the counter about the meat he usually gets and how he needs to try it before buying. I instantly think back to the amazing week we experienced in The Enchantments. The time we spent, 7 of us total, backpacking through the Washington wilderness with 50-60lb packs, hiking about 7-8 miles a day over rough, mountainous terrain, straining muscles, using every ounce of strength, fingers and hands outreached for boulders just praying we’re able to keep going upward. We saw so much natural beauty—the surreal became normal and expected. . Back at the supermarket, standing in line to get sandwich meat and cheese to make lunch for the normal work week ahead, Thomas leans in and says, “why did we come back again?” I’m not sure I can invent an answer of substance. We think back to days long past, before every square mile on this earth had been discovered, analyzed and quantified. To days where there were still truly things unknown and new. And I suppose in reality they still exist and wait to be found.
