like ok i feel like a setting swap is way too obvious but god do i ever have ideas. (contains spoilers for all three shows ofc)

emu's smart enough to know that hiiro's a surgeon, and that killing goes against everything he believes in as a doctor, even if it's for saki's sake. hiiro knowing that emu is right — that he's not a killer — but this war is the only chance he has to atone for his greatest mistake. he knows he'll eventually have emu's blood on his hands, because he's that desperate to make his wish come true, but somewhere deep in his chest, hiiro knows he can't kill emu.

ren and shinji, rivals drawn together by fate and the mysterious girl with short, blond hair. shinji never wanted a war — doesn't even want the power the golden fruit offers — but won't rest until he's saved yui; ren needs a war, to save yui and to have the strength to save eri, but more than that, because he doesn't know how to do anything but fight. maybe in another world he and shinji can be friends, or more, but in this one — there truly can be only one victor. (when shinji brings ren's spirit back to the tree near atori cafe, to watch over sanako, who will never know why her niece or those boys she used to hang out with went missing, it finally seems like ren knows peace.)

kouta, the ever-smiling pediatric nurse who doesn't know much about the bugster virus — he just knows that if he's got the power to help a patient, he's going to use it, no matter what happens to him as a result. kaito, a surgeon with a blunt, rough attitude, who watched his family's small practice get bought out by the corporation who created the gamer drivers to fight the bugster virus. kouta is idealistic, foolish, too weak to try to take more power, even once he's recruited to the cr; kaito's nearly cruel bedside manner only slips sometimes, and kouta doesn't understand why he seeks stronger gashats so obsessively. but if kouta can get past that rough exterior, past the anger and grief, maybe — just maybe — he can get kaito to choose his own fate, instead of looking towards an unchangeable past.
