Tasting: 2019 Heng Tong “Ging Ting Tribute” Ripe Puerh
Now I was especially intrigued by this puerh because it was not something I meant to purchase initially. I got this cake as a free add on with my order since I was spending over $125. There were several other cakes and items that I could have gotten but I decided to go for the largest puerh cake I could. This cake is still very young, only being a 2019 pressing.
Gong Ting which means “Imperial Court” refers to high quality of the material used to produce the cake. Can sometimes also be referred to as emperor’s puerh or palace puerh. This type of puerh is made from golden tips and/or bud and due to the delicateness of the leaves it undergoes a kind of “composting” process as with most ripe puerh teas for a 2 month period. However in this case that time is cut in half.
The cake was extremely aromatic even before removing the wrapper. The dry leaf I found has a very clean sweetness, with fruity hints similar to dark berries. The wet leaf showed more of this berry note that came out more rich and tart like a dark chocolate acai berry. Also detected heavy notes of deep mineral on both the dry and wet leaf.
The brewed tea is thick and fresh tasting, with a very subtle hint of smoke on the first infusion. Strong earthy notes like wet soil, rich in minerals and a note of the acai berry but without the tartness. I found that with each infusion the taste of deep rich minerals remained front and center, which oddly enough I actually really enjoyed.
The aftertaste was clean, reminded me of fresh morning air after a rainfall. Similar mouth feel to what you may get after a sip of bottle water with added vitamins and minerals.
I really did enjoy this puerh, as it’s perfect for everyday drinking and I think will get a bit better with age. I am rating this puerh a 3 out of 5 stars. I look forward to enjoying more of this cake and aging it. Perhaps in the future if I have a large enough order again, maybe I’ll get it again as a free add on.
