The man is so intent on yapping about operas and “proper courtship” that he seems utterly oblivious to the fact she’s practically crawling all over him. It’s almost impressive, really—his sheer ability to intellectualize his way out of getting laid.

I just keep imagining lucanis sticking his head out from the pantry at the sound of rye having a complete unprecedented mental breakdown over by the dinner table, while emmrich -- almost as distressed -- tries to understand what on earth just happened and frantically pats his back. *lucanis voice* 'okay folks this is the big one, what we've trained for. Emergency support bae protocol (soft if slightly awkward kisses to the top of the head & I'm making fantasy kleppsuppe* about it) engage'. rye ruefully slurping warm milk with an emotional support blanket safely wrapped around his shoulders while lucanis gently brushes his hair back from his face and emmrich peers at him sympathetically over his own bowl like 'listen you guys cannot ever say you're proud of me I'll be out of commission for at least two days after that and we’ll get nothing done’ 

*kleppsuppe is a traditional norwegian dish that's like... balls of egg and flour dough boiled in sweetened milk. it was one of my faves growing up and as a mark of ultimate blorbo love and affection I have given rye this favourite childhood dish too, it's what renn would make for him when he'd had an especially long and trying day of being a crypt baby and just Couldn’t with the food that was being served at communal meals. It’s also the smell he can’t place when entering the arlathan mirror crossroads island — where harding smells her ma’s apple cake and lucanis smells the coffee from the kitchens when he and illario were little. once he made the connection and told lucanis about it, lucanis hunted down the admittedly very simple recipe and then made it until he got it exactly right the way renn used to make it and now it's one of the most powerful weapons in the team wide 'rook sad :( we fix' emergency arsenal lol

the relationship between rye and emmrich is that if emmrich ever told rye that he's a damn fine watcher, rye would immediately burst into helpless inconsolable tears and have to be coaxed down from it for an hour with hot tea and gentle voices and kind patient back pats before he could be what passes for normal on the surface again
