I remember talking to my Grandmother one time about her mother, Madea. My Madea transitioned when my mother was young so very clearly I never met this lady but I just knew something. My grandmother started crying and saying, “How do you know that? How do you know that abt my mama?” And I didn’t know. And I can’t claim to know for real still. But I do know... there is some theory, praxis, ethic, reality to having knowledge that might not be in a book but is more factual than some science. This is why I say: - My ancestors - My education - My lived experience ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This is what authorizes me. I have the great privilege of being close friends with the folk your children and their children's children will study in school. I know the change makers. I know the healers. I know the creatives. I know the comedians. I know the activists. I know the scholars. I know the leaders. The culture shifters. I know them all. Most of them black women and femmes. ---- My friends call me the historian. Chiara calls me this because I have a video and a journal entry about everything. I've archived my notes on these experiences very well. Thea can confirm this. I pull up a dated and time stamped quote of hers on the regular to quote her back to her. My team at The Free People Project is building an actual archive right now because I understand my responsibility to this work of seeing us into the future. ---- If I don't tell our stories, white supremacy and patriarchy will erase us. ---- It's a NEVER for me. ---- Last night I launched something with a group of women that is going to literally change the world. You'll hear more about it soon but let me tell you a few things about this experience: - No one but me and my team knew the full guest list. - As each person logged on everybody's eyeballs was like 👀🙊 - The "room" was EPIC. - The work is GAME CHANGING. - There was a moment when I looked around and thought, "Well sh*t what am EYE doing here..." even though I'm the one that inviting them. - Because when I say... It's for real. Whew! These women folk... TRILL! ---- This post is about the fact that the greatest affirmation of my life, usually, most often, almost always comes from black women. Because when black women affirm me I feel so seen, so known, so understood, so official. ---- Last night was a huge affirmation of my life to have a room full of legends say, "Yes" to me because I SURELY beeeeeeen said yes to them. They are decolonized authority because they are the authority. They make me credible. They authorize me. They affirm me. They make me wanna raise my rates! LOL! ---- I don't know that I'll ever give imposter syndrome any space again. I think my earliest spiritual gift was great perspective. I have amazinnnnnnng perspective. I can look at a disaster and be like, “God has something in store for this. If I can just not die in the process and keep moving forward this is going to be amazing.” I have thought this way since I was a little girl. “There is something good and God here.” Proof? I wrote a book called “Ces Yeux” when I was 8 about a girl who could see things. 🙊 This is a true story. Lol. I think perspective is for the prophets. I always knew my Grandmother was peculiar. I always knew she was special. It’s not just the way her 6 girls raised us to honor her because that’s just very Black and Southern and right. It wasn’t just the way everyone called her “Mother” or “Grandma” even if she was neither of the above for them by blood. And it was more than just the fact that she was a bright light in every space she walked into. She was. She is. But it was always more than that for me. So I have the great privilege of saying that I lived my life in such a way that i loved my grandmother obsessively so that should she leave this planet before me we would be very very clear where we stood before she transitioned. She was my best friend. She was Ours. She left this body 5 years ago to the day. I miss her in my bones. But I am my ancestors so I’m grateful to God for the perspective and prophetic knowing that continuing her work by being a more free version of who she might have been in one of the infinite possibilities that exists where she got to be in this form and really really really free. @emmaslegacyfoundation is one of my gifts to the earth on behalf of my Grandmother. - The new iteration of #BlackGirlMixtape is here. - Dream Yourself Free 6 Month Intensive for Blk women is here. - DYF 12 Month Spiritual Mentoring for all women is here. - The work of healing Blk women, WOC, and diasporic blkness is here. - Epic dreams lives here.
