I had to leave a Facebook book-club group discussing Emma, because when I pointed out that Emma defends Jane Fairfax's beauty, the response was that it was actually evil. No, I just didn't understand. Emma liked that Frank was insulting Jane.
Huh? This is the quote (and yes I read around it too for any hint of sarcasm or meanness):
“Ill, very ill—that is, if a young lady can ever be allowed to look ill. But the expression is hardly admissible, Mrs. Weston, is it? Ladies can never look ill. And, seriously, Miss Fairfax is naturally so pale, as almost always to give the appearance of ill health.—A most deplorable want of complexion.” Emma would not agree to this, and began a warm defence of Miss Fairfax’s complexion. “It was certainly never brilliant, but she would not allow it to have a sickly hue in general; and there was a softness and delicacy in her skin which gave peculiar elegance to the character of her face.”
Where is her being mean? Frank said Jane looked sickly and Emma could not abide it, she defends Jane and even uses a big compliment (for her) "elegant". Emma very much admires elegance and it is a word she uses constantly with Jane. Emma sincerely admires Jane's looks and her elegance.
Which really makes this a "I hate Emma so everything she does must be evil" thing. And I can't take it anymore! She has good traits, otherwise she wouldn't be redeemable! Why must people make her good parts bad? While Emma does complain about Jane's reserve, she does not insult her to anyone. She even tells Harriet Jane is a better pianoforte player:
“Oh! if I could but play as well as you and Miss Fairfax!” [H] “Don’t class us together, Harriet. My playing is no more like her’s, than a lamp is like sunshine.” [Emma] “Oh! dear—I think you play the best of the two. I think you play quite as well as she does. I am sure I had much rather hear you. Every body last night said how well you played.” “Those who knew any thing about it, must have felt the difference. The truth is, Harriet, that my playing is just good enough to be praised, but Jane Fairfax’s is much beyond it.”
Emma may like being told she's superior, but she does not tear other's down to feel better.
And then her charity, a lot of people take this part as sarcsm:
That is NOT this:
They were now approaching the cottage, and all idle topics were superseded. Emma was very compassionate; and the distresses of the poor were as sure of relief from her personal attention and kindness, her counsel and her patience, as from her purse. She understood their ways, could allow for their ignorance and their temptations, had no romantic expectations of extraordinary virtue from those for whom education had done so little; entered into their troubles with ready sympathy, and always gave her assistance with as much intelligence as good-will.
Elizabeth soon perceived, that though this great lady was not in the commission of the peace for the county, she was a most active magistrate in her own parish, the minutest concerns of which were carried to her by Mr. Collins; and whenever any of the cottagers were disposed to be quarrelsome, discontented, or too poor, she sallied forth into the village to settle their differences, silence their complaints, and scold them into harmony and plenty. (Pride & Prejudice, Ch 30)
With Lady Catherine, there is no mention of compassion, money, kindness, or sympathy. NONE. Lady Catherine is coming to tell people they spend too much money on avocado toast. Emma is giving them money, kindness, and soup. These are not the same! Emma's charity is actually a good thing, it is part of why she is the heroine. Look at her treatment of Miss Taylor! Do you think Lady Catherine treats Mrs. Jenkinson as a friend? WE KNOW SHE DOESN'T!
Yes, Emma is snobby in her charity, but she's also filthy rich and living in a classist system. It was also her actual job. I doubt anyone in that house felt that she was condescending (in the modern use of that word). She was doing her duty and doing it well.
It just feels so unfair. Emma cannot have a single good feature, for some reason literally EVERYTHING she does MUST be evil/tainted/self-centered. Give me a break.
(I also left once because people would not stop calling Mary Crawford a succubus/siren/seductress.)

Inhaler & Sun Room – Theatre of the Living Arts – Philadelphia, PA – March 16, 2023
Philly welcomed Inhaler for an incredible sold-out show on tour to celebrate their latest album Cuts and Bruises. Inhaler is joined by Sun Room on this tour, who most recently released their latest EP “Outta Their Minds” in late February. Fans eagerly lined up around the block, anxiously awaiting the night that was in store for them. As doors opened at 7:00, the venue quickly filled up and the excitement began!
Taking the stage first was Sun Room. Fans went wild as they came on stage and kicked off their set with “Darling,” Sunset Blvd,” and “Summer’s Here.” Comprised of Luke Asgian, Max Pinamonti, Ashton Minnich, and Gibson Anderson, Sun Room started the night off on an incredible note. It was clear they were all having a blast on stage as they continued through their set with “Just Yesterday,” “Something That You’re Missing,” “Sunset Garage,” and a cover of “Get Off Of My Cloud” by The Rolling Stones.
This was my third time seeing Sun Room, and as always, their stage presence was captivating and they had incredible energy that got fans in the crowd up off their feet. They were met with many cheers from the audience throughout their performance. They finished their set with “Fun,” “Red Dress,” and “Cadillac,” leaving fans excited and invigorated for Inhaler’s set to begin, as well as with a lasting impression of who Sun Room is!
At around 9:00, the lights went low, and the venue was filled with screams from the crowd as Inhaler took the stage. They began their set with “These Are The Days,” “My Honest Face,” and “Totally.” The entire crowd was up off their feet jumping and cheering as Inhaler kicked off their set with incredible energy. Comprised of Elijah Hewson [son of U2 singer Bono], Josh Jenkinson, Robert Keating, and Ryan McMahon, fans were unbelievably excited to see the band taking the stage, performing once again. The atmosphere that Inhaler created in the venue was unbelievable! You could feel the happiness radiating from the fans in the crowd as they smiled, cheered, and danced throughout the entirety of the set.
Inhaler continued their set with “My King Will Be Kind,” “Now You Got Me,” and my personal favorites of the night, “Valentine,” and “Love Will Get You There.” Inhaler’s passion was unbeatable throughout their entire performance, and the energy and excitement in the room never once died down. As the set came to a close, they finished up with their songs “Who’s Your Money On? (Plastic House),” and “Cheer Up Baby.” As they ran off stage after thanking the crowd for an incredible night, the venue was quickly filled with chants for an encore as it was clear the fans weren’t ready for the night to be over. Inhaler took the stage once again and performed a two song encore of “If You’re Gonna Break My Heart,” and “It Won’t Always Be Like This.”
Overall, this was an absolutely incredible show. Both Sun Room and Inhaler had captivating and exciting performances full of so much passion, and it was really amazing to see. Make sure to stream Sun Room’s new EP “Outta Their Minds,” and Inhaler’s latest album “Cuts and Bruises,” and be sure to get out to a show and catch them on tour!

Day 8: Ashley
Favorite Actor: Emma Jenkinson
Favorite Song: A Lotta Locomotion
Favorite Costume: The one used from Broadway onwards
Favorite Ship: Ashley/Buffy, occasional Dustin/Ashley
Headcanon: Apart from the classical cigarettes, Ashley also owns an hookah. She often invites the other coaches, and occasionally BoBo and Dustin to smoke with her.
Unpopular Opinion: Still kinda gloomy that she got replaced, but Belle the Bar Car is also good, too.

Chloe Lilac Shares 10 Songs That Inspired Her New Mixtape ‘you were good to me’
Photo: Emma Marie Jenkinson
Love and betrayal exist at the heart of Chloe Lilac’s latest mixtape, you were good to me. It’s the emotional undercurrent that propels the four-track project forward from the guitar-driven controlled outburst of “lily’s backyard” to the confident embrace of “only love song.”
"This mixtape is all about losing the people you love most. Whether that’s losing a best friend, losing a romantic partner, or losing yourself. It can be hard to let go when people come in and out of your life, you could feel betrayed, you could feel heartbreak, you could feel anger, but at the end of the day, it all comes back to love," shares Lilac.
Taking inspiration from a wide span of indie rock cult hits and the occasional Childish Gambino track, we invited Lilac to share with us the 10 songs that scored the creation of you were good to me.
1. Hole - “Violet”: This is one of my all time favorite songs. I love how angry she is!
2. The Breeders - “No Aloha”: The breeders are one of my favorite bands of all time. I love the breakdown.
3. Alex G - “Gretel”: Alex G is a huge inspiration of mine. The combination of acoustic and electronic instruments makes his music almost sound haunted. The writing is amazing too.
4. Pixies - “Hey”: The Pixies are my all time favorite band. This song in particular has inspired me so much throughout my life.
5. Weezer - “Undone”: This album is one of the greatest albums of all time. This and violet were the main inspirations for “lily’s backyard.”
6. Fiona Apple - “Paper Bag”: The honest lyrics of this song cut deep. Fiona Apple is a legend and inspires me so much.
7. Mitski - “Your Best American Girl”: I feel like I’m saying this a lot but Mitski is one of the greatest of all time. This song changed my life when I heard it. I dream of making a song this good one day.
8. Radiohead - “Karma Police”: The chord progression, lyrics, just oh my god. This song is amazing.
9. Childish Gambino - “What Kind of Love”: These lyrics are insane. I love how melancholy the guitar is.
10. Chloe Lilac - “how does your girlfriend feel about it”: I wrote this song!! It’s on my new mixtape that just came out! Go stream it!

We may consider the products of industry with reference to their utility; or to their cheapness; or with regard to their influence upon the condition of those who produce them; or lastly, with reference to their beauty; to the degree in which they associate the presentation of form and colours, agreeable to the cultivated eye, with the attainment of the highest aptitude for those purposes of common life, for which they are properly designed - Mr. Gladstone.
My trek through the British Ceramics Biennial has led me from the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, where I also saw the new Spitfire, to Airspace, Spode and the Goods Yard. This is a time of firsts as I’d never been to or even heard of the Goods Yard until a month ago, and now I’ve been there four times.
Likewise, I had heard of Valentine Clays but this trip, to see a fringe exhibition, was the first time I’d actually been there. It was founded in 1979 by Alan Ault Senior and its directors are Alan Ault Junior and Alan Jr’s daughter, Hannah.
Of the artists, some were (like me) born and bred in the area, breathed in the traditions of pottery and learnt the fun of messing with clay as children, whereas others came to it as adults (throughout the festival I’ve seen artists who trained in other areas, came across clay, found what they wanted to do and forgot their earlier ideas). I’d advise following Danny Callaghan on the Potteries Tile Trail to learn more about the history of ceramics here.
At Valentine Clays I started outside (1) and moved on to (2) the Gladstone Firehand, by Wali Hawes (RIP), inspired by Stoke-on-Trent and his native India. At the exhibition can be found (3) Gillie Nicholls, (4) John French, (5) Tracy Bentley (Burslem Pottery), (6) Philip Hardaker, (7) Natalie Jenkinson, (8) Will Boyce, (9) Emma Bailey, and (10) Carole Glover.
The cynics said that Valentine Clays, along wth Emma Bridgewater (1985), which I’m going to tomorrow, didn’t stand a chance, but here they still are, a family business proving the armchair generals wrong.
The festival is only open until 17 October 2021 and, though it’s coming back in 2023, I’d suggest grabbing your fill of what is on offer now.
Although anchored in the city centre, the festival’s branches should be sought out and, unlike other venues whose future is uncertain, Valentine Clays is here to stay.

Day 5 of stex appreciation month, the dining car who deserved better, Dinah! I took the opportunity to practice a new expression on her and. I made myself sad. Anyway, questions answered below!
Favorite song she's in: U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D. of course! It makes me emotional.
Favorite actress: I love Frances Ruffelle's voice but Emma Jenkinson has my favorite looks for her!
Favorite ship with her: CB/Dinah without a doubt. So many feels when it comes to those two. 🥺
Favorite thing about her: God I know I've been deep abt my favorite thing for everyone else but Dinah's outfit is SO CUTE.
Random headcanon: She sings while she cooks! She can't help it! Sometimes the other coaches make fun of her for it but she doesn't care. She's having fun.
Unpopular opinion: Definitely not an unpopular opinion but I have STRONG opinions about how Dinah deserved better. So. Yeah.
