This is Cathy's fourth honorable mention, after Living in Oblivion, Into the Wild, and An American Crime.
This is Jake's third honorable mention, after Brokeback Mountain and Jarhead.
This is Brenda's third honorable mention, after RKO 281 and Little Voice.
This is Emily's second honorable mention, after Transsiberian.
Nicole has two entries among my best 1001 - Please Give and Enough Said. This is her first honorable mention.
Catherine Keener, Jake Gyllenhaal, Brenda Blethyn, Emily Mortimer and Raven Goodwin in Lovely and Amazing (2002), written and directed by Nicole Holofcener. Nicole has two entries among my best 1,001 movies - Please Give and Enough Said. Her most recent film, The Land of Steady Habits (2018) is her first film with a male lead character. It was a middling entertainment for me, as is Lovely and Amazing.

20﹕ has your view of your muse changed while you’ve been writing them ?
I've been writing her since at least November of 2014, and so really? I greatly hope so. In a few days, that's ten years of having written her. And I love her so deeply. I know that she's changed and I love that, but I barely remember how she's changed because she's changed and grown with me. She's developed like a person.
I'd like to proudly state that I know her better than the showrunners, considering they couldn't figure out if she had a sister or not. Waiting to see what happens with that before I pass full judgement.
But the people here, on this site? The people I know now, and the people I've known in the past? They have, without a doubt, helped me develop my view of her through her relationship with others. Whether they still write her or not, whether they've retired muses, I've discovered things about Emily through others.
I discovered things about her while I wrote her. That she wants to adopt, and has done the work to be able to do so, through therapy, whether or not she ever gets the chance. That she's a lesbian, but she hid it for far longer than I ever imagined when I first started writing her - that she came out late, and she learns to note regret it. That it takes until 2012 for her to really, actually, love herself, and that it's a work in progress.
That she still hates politics, but she does love leading the team.
Honestly, there's so much. There's only a few other characters on tumblr that I've written to the extent that I've written Emily, and I could say it's probably just Clint Barton. Maybe, in a pinch, Sophia Keener or Robin Rockwell just for length of time I've written them, but not the extent.
send me these memes.

what if Lady Jessica mistakes Izabela from behind as Emily? How tall is Emily, I forget how tall my Izabela is, but the ginger hair...mmh growing up ginger I find it don't matter how tall you are, you'll get mistaken for another ginger more often than you'd like to admit to ever. But being vampires, I imagine height matters cause perception is better? Idk I'm silly
It would be unlikely for a vampire to mistake another vampire for a human because they lack the distinctive scent of human blood.
Vampires in this setting have a much keener sense of smell, especially for human blood, to the point where they can track humans for hours or effortlessly pick their thralls from crowds.

This is a continuation of Holmes and Emily's adventures. This series will be narrated in Holmes and Emily's Pov. Enjoy!
Series Masterlist
1. Ladies and letters
Sherlock Holmes:
"Really, Holmes," Watson chided, "She's half your age."
This was not entirely accurate - not that Watson paid excessive attention to facts in the sensationalised accounts that he sent to the Strand. Hyperbole, it seemed, was a writer's best friend.
"You're acting like I'm some lovesick suitor trying to win her over with charm and affection," I replied tartly, examining my nails with what I hoped was a sufficient air of indifference to the topic, "two qualities for which you know very well I am not famous. I believe you are simply imagining something that does not exist, and it's getting rather tiring. I would like for you to drop it." I was not in the mood to discuss the matter any further, for my ribs injured during a recent case had not yet entirely ceased to ache.
Said topic, of course, was a young lady of my acquaintance, one Miss Emily Cartwright, whom Watson seemed to think had quite turned my head. Of course, the very idea was absolute rot - the day that simple lust brought on by a pretty face overtakes the precision of my mind is the day that Watson leaves medicine once and for all and takes up professional dart-playing.
This is not, of course, to say that Miss Cartwright - or Emily, as she has insisted I call her - is an unattractive young woman. Though she generally wears her molasses-brown hair in a proper chignon or even a French twist, I have had occasion (though not on purpose) to see it loose, and the image has, strangely, stayed with me till now. Her build is slender and finely-boned, but woe betide anyone who thinks her overly delicate for it - this, of course, has included me. In addition, she has proven her intelligence more than once, possessing a level of rationality keener than is representative of her sex, and she never ceases to surprise me.
She also has managed to drive me up the wall more than once, for despite her keen mind she is also rather hot-tempered and capricious, and not the sort to give up without a fight, either physically or verbally. The last time I saw her, in fact, she still bore the fading marks of a split lip, testament to an encounter we'd had with a crooked deliveryman.
"Holmes, are you even listening to me?" Watson broke into my train of thought. In the course of my reflections I had managed to tune him out briefly, something which never ceases to annoy him.
"Yes," I replied, "And I think you're being silly."
"If I'm being so silly, why haven't you opened any of her letters?"
I allowed my gaze to briefly regard the small stack of unopened envelopes resting benignly on the corner of the mantel. There were five of them, addressed in her elegant script (Fountain pen, fine brass nib, black India ink, slightly smudged from the heel of her dominant left hand briefly resting on the wet ink) and sealed (teal green sealing wax - I could probably hunt down the vendor if I cared to do so - there were only three vendors that I knew of who sold this peculiar shade), with the topmost envelope (fine-quality paper with a medium cotton content) lightly scented (predominantly lilac, with perhaps a hint of jasmine). Why should I open them? I could determine practically everything from the sealed envelopes.
No – I must be honest. I could determine everything but a rational reason not to open them. They'd sat on the mantel (I thought it slightly obscene to impale them on the jack-knife along with the rest of my correspondence) with all the quiet menace of Pandora's Box, had the contents been sent through the post rather than bestowed by the gods for safekeeping.
"My mail is my business," I informed Watson, "And I shall open it whenever I wish."
Watson huffed a long-suffering sigh at me and, shaking his head in amused disbelief, opened his newspaper.
Finally, as a compromise, I resolved that if she wrote me a sixth letter, I would open all of them.
No sooner was the thought formed in my mind than Mrs Hudson came upstairs with the evening mail. It contained two letters, one from Inspector Lestrade - and one from Emily.
Blast it.
Emily Cartwright:
Where to begin?
I suppose I could begin by telling you my life story up to this point, and in fact I could even make it interesting, but I have found most habitual autobiographers to be rather egotistical, assuming that everyone wishes to know such an awful lot about them that they write it all down and have it bound in a ponderous volume that subsequently accomplishes little more than continually reaffirming the law of gravity until such time (I have yet to discover the exact interval, but between fifty and a hundred years sounds right) as it is declared a classic and force-fed to a whole generation of literature students.
So I shall simply adhere to more recent events, such as my current acquaintance with a certain Englishman who hails from the neighbourhood of Baker Street and who happens to be mildly famous.
Most people, on reflecting upon the character of Mr Sherlock Holmes, would describe him as arrogant, overbearing, and altogether too logical for his own good. His ways are rigid, they say, his manner is cold, and besides which quite unsociable toward most people. (Rumours abound, paradoxically, about the fact that he freely accepts as clients Those Women who work from street-corners and brothels.)
I have found him to be quite polite and well-mannered, if a bit reserved towards women. He can be rather abrupt at times, a trait which takes some getting used to, but once one is in his confidence he can be a fierce ally and a close friend (I am put in mind of the series of events which led to him attacking a very large man who was manhandling yours truly in a trouser role).
In terms of appearance he is no Adonis, with his angular build and avian profile, but he is handsome enough to put most people at ease (my father being a glaring exception, but he is another matter entirely), and his neutral (some would say stony) countenance makes a delightful puzzle of trying to figure out what is going on in that tidily ordered mind of his.
His best features, in my opinion, are his hands, with the slender fingers of an artist and the delicate touch of a surgeon. Granted, they are as often as not marked by burns and stains, but these are the calluses of his trade.
Most of all, what sets Holmes apart from most men I've met in London is the fact that he doesn't try to impress me with wealth (of which he has very little) or promises of pampering (which I wouldn't accept) or even simple doting affection (which would either make me quite ill or suspect that he was ill). He sets the rules and expects me to follow them - or rather, he *doesn't* expect me to be able to follow them, so he is surprised when I call his bluff. It has, I think, become a game between us - he pushes, and I push back. He forms certain expectations of my abilities, and I cheerfully defy them. It keeps things interesting - or it would if he weren't being so damned stubborn right now in not replying to my letters. I don't think he means anything by it, of course - one could accuse Sherlock Holmes of many things, but deliberate and wilful incivility is not one of them.

⎯ @muutos, emily prentiss : “ i’m alone. and it’s my own fault. but it doesn’t make it hurt any less. ”
elbows rest on his knees, aaron bent forward as he listens. truly listens. resilient as they are, his team requires proof every now and then that he's there for them and that he'll always be. but it's different with prentiss. for her, he'll allow himself prolonged side glances and a keener interest; did so even before they both crossed the line at the same time to close what little distance remained between them and kissed, not so long ago. aaron was as fragile then as emily is now. a frown, eyes momentarily dropping. ❝ i wish that i could tell you it gets easier. ❞
the ghost of his wedding ring is still noticeable where the skin is slightly paler on his finger. it's taken him a year before he eventually managed to take it off. guilt follows him like a shadow, washing over every time he recognizes haley's smile in jack's. ❝ but it doesn't. ❞ he slowly reaches for her hand, fingers snaking round her wrist, squeezing gently. ❝ good or bad, the choices we've made've gotten us where we are now. ❞ underestimating george foyet has been his greatest mistake; yet he's chosen to concentrate on the work, on jack. ❝ but you're not alone, emily. we'll always be there for you. do you hear me? ❞

Movies I watched and books I read this Week #110 (Year 3/Week 6):
I had no electricity this week: It was nice to experience media silence for a few days. Hence, fewer film reviews:
🍿
Starting the week right, by revisiting Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot, Tati’s sweet and gentle comedy, a nostalgic look at the seaside of Brittany after the war. (Poster Above).
🍿
2 by German-Turkish director Fatih Akin:
🍿 Soul Kitchen, an unfocused restaurant story set in an old industrial part of Hamburg, with punkish moods, Greek emigrants and Fassbinder influence that don’t gel together into a cohesive whole. With the always present Udo Kier in a minor role.
🍿 I liked his 2017 Aus dem Nichts (In the fade) much more. Another tale taking place in an emigrant community: A Kurdish-German husband and son are killed by a neo-Nazis bomb attack, and his beautiful wife Diane Kruger is left to deal with the aftermath. A much more traditional thriller about grief and revenge. 7/10.
🍿
My summer of love, my 4th from my favorite Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski. A bittersweet affair between two teenage girls, one a working class orphan and Emily Blunt in her debut role, as upper middle class girl (and playing the cello for real). A moody, seemingly-simple obsessive love where every scene and every interesting shot is carefully composed with visual seductiveness. Bonus for Extra Edith Piaf on records. 7/10.
🍿
2 by female director Harry Wootliff:
🍿 In the dark British psycho-drama True Things, a lonely claim handler Ruth Wilson falls deeply and inexplicably for a client, an ex-con, after some hurried stand-up sex in an empty garage. What seems to start as a passionate romance, turned into a nuanced roller coaster of adult infatuation and being lost in the world. I loved the careful female gaze sensibilities. 7/10.
🍿 I’m adding Harry Wootliff first film, Only you, to my growing list of favorite debut masterpieces by terrific female directors. It’s an unabashed romantic love story between the beautiful Laia Costa and a younger Josh O’Connor. Both of the films she made so far describe young people as they hook up, gets infatuated and fall completely in love from a subtle and beautiful female POV. Love her directorial style and choices! 8/10.
🍿
Selected as Bolivia’s official Oscar submission for 2022, Utama, is my third film from Bolivia (After ‘Pseudo’ and ‘Salt and Fire’). It’s a patient but extremely slow story of an elderly Quechua-speaking Indian couple who lives alone in the arid and unforgiving desert, tending to their small flock of llamas. The stubborn old man is about to die, and his grandson who comes from La Paz, cannot persuades him to move to the city before he does so.
The indigenous old non actors playing the Indian couple were magnificent. 8/10.
🍿
My first two by Italian director Mario Monicelli:
🍿 Marcello Mastroianni is The organizer, a unionist trying to organize workers laboring with inhuman conditions at a late 19th Century textile factory in Turin. A terrific, Neo-realistic and unsentimental look at the eternal struggle for control of the means of production.
I was going to re-visit Bertolucci’s ‘Novecento’, and instead lucked out to see this. Vive la révolution. 9/10.
🍿 Big Deal on Madonna Street (AKA Persons Unknown) is his caper comedy from 1958, like ‘Ocean 8 (or rather ‘Rififi’) but as if the crooks were all small-time, incompetent and unlucky, and if they get to their heist by way of tram rides and old-style bicycles. With young Mastroianni, Vittorio Gassman and the "Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia" Claudia Cardinale. 3/10.
🍿
First Watch: Altman’s atypical anti-western McCabe and Mrs. Miller, about a whorehouse in a small rural town, (so basically a glamorized look at the origins of the Donild Drump’s dynasty). Leonard Cohen songs carry much of the emotional baggage of the characters, and Shelley Duvall had very little to do.
🍿
2 by Nicole Holofcener, both with Catherine Keener:
🍿 Enough said, a sweet romance between middle-aged Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini (in his last role). He plays a really nice guy. 6/10.
🍿 Please give, another well-told, underrated urbanite tale of solidly-middle class females, who are uncomfortable in their environment, their skin and with their white privilege status. Both featuring heavy-set/fat, late-blooming men starting affairs (in this case Oliver Platt). Nancy Meyers-lite. 5/10.
🍿
...”What was the distance that early airplanes flew when they realized they needed toilets?”..
One of the many inane questions Philomena Cunk asks her Very Important Interviewees in “Kunkonerth” or Cunk on Earth. The latest Charlie Brooker mockumentery, where she pretends to be a clueless TV person, asking possibly real scholars the stupidest questions one could come up with while maintaining a straight face and deadpan delivery. 4/10.
🍿
The Da Vinci Code X 2:
🍿 (Because I didn’t have electricity) I finally read Dan Brown’s “thriller“, more or less in one sitting. It was a low-brow pseudo-religious exploration into conspiracy theories, secret societies, alternative history, and fake Christian revelations. So much bullshit packed into 24 hours. Brown's writing is not just bad; it is staggeringly, clumsily, thoughtlessly, almost ingeniously bad. In some passages scarcely a word or phrase seems to have been carefully selected or compared with alternatives. I slogged through 454 pages of this syntactic swill, and it never gets much better. 1/10.
🍿 I also had a bad feeling about Ron Howard’s adaptation of the book, but I tried to keep an open mind about it. So it wasn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen, and not even the worst this year. But it was so poorly-made and uninspired, so lifeless and pedestrian, that it was impossible to continue. So here’s to the first film I couldn’t finish this year!. 1/10.
🍿

Not enough, OP. Let's build on this.
Coach
Teaches law 101
He is also the school's football coach
Why teach law? The school's understaffed and the principal just shoved a textbook at him and said to stay a chapter ahead of the kids
There's another teacher who's covering PE, but "they don't have a bad knee," so "they can keep up with the kids"
It's total bullshit, and as Coach calls out, total politics
The principal and that other PE teacher are buddies, and it's not subtle
The deal is that Coach covers the law class, but still gets to run the football team, and in return, he keeps his thumb off the 'send' button to the district school board - and the PTA
Would he actually do it? Probably not. But it keeps them on their toes and leaves the football team firmly under his control
The team loves him
The class, not so much, mostly because a courtroom and the judicial system does not always lend itself to a one-for-one football analogy
He's two chapters ahead :)
Rochelle
English teacher
She runs a digital media club after school, mostly because they used to have a school paper but the last teacher running that let a kid ruin it for everyone
Whatever - she's teaching the kids how to do media digitally
It's surprisingly effective at teaching kids online safety, as well as how to safely subtweet someone into violating various platforms' TOS
The kids love her
English class actually goes well, too
She has three or four strict points on each assignment that students need to hit, but other than that, they can be as creative as they want
The keeners adore getting to express themselves
The slackers love not having to try lmao
The kids who are shy are finding their voices
Some fights and bad relationships have been broken up by Rochelle sensing tension, then making two kids swap papers midway through and finish the original point, helping them to learn the other person's perspective and empathize
She has many bets placed on which couples are gonna break up before prom
Nick
Teaches religion
Fundamentally the business teacher in that every single tax break, income loophole, legal shortcut, and targeted marketing campaigns gets laid out in perfect clarity
"The Bible is the bestselling book of all time. Do you know how much money that makes? Pick a state - we're gonna look up how many laws say you have to have one of those in arm's reach"
Introduces consumer lifecycles - aka how to target any dummy based on where they are "along their journey"
Encourages everyone to pick a religion; that's just good branding
"Find the kid whose religion hates yours the most and partner up. Today's lesson is 'The Illusion of Choice'."
Swaps the slide to a picture of Jesus whenever someone pokes their head inside
Taught students how to effectively station a lookout when they start to pivot their pitch from Buddhism to the real shit they wanna sell
"Did you know that if you do someone a favour, they're more likely to do a favour for you? Good - erase that from your mind. Don't do favours. Favours are gifts and gifts are money, and we wanna keep our cashflow headed in one direction. No, Emily, not the band. Jesus. No, Duncan, not the beard-guy. What's with you kids?"
Orchestrates the break-ups 'cause he's got money on it happening at prom
Ellis
Art teacher
Likes to find art in everything
Doesn't like to be a hypocrite
"Man, that is a great squirrel y'all found on that road. C'mon, let's see if its tail's gonna work as a brush"
Every other teacher has found their equipment in their classroom at some stage, to the point that it's the first place anyone checks anymore
"Tuba? Oh - you mean the Blue Blaster. Yeah, we just filled that on up with paint and let it rip against the wall. Tryin' to teach these kids that learnin' can be fun. Probably shoulda taught how to use the tuba first though, huh? Third kid in, tried to suck instead'f blow - hey man, not like that - but anyway, that's why I had to call his parents. Ain't much fuss from 'em though 'cause that paint was all non-toxic. Hey, did you know 'non-toxic' changes on what you're usin' it for? If it's non-toxic food, that means you can eat it. Non-toxic dish soap? Well, you probably still don't wanna guzzle that down. I ever tell you 'bout my buddy Keith and that one time he drank a whole bottle of dish soap? Yeah - see, he knew how tubas worked and that's why he drank it. We were gonna shake 'im up and let him blast a bubble big enough to catch a dog. Why a dog? I dunno - just a lot'f dogs around at the time, but it's another story on how that gator changed the neighbourhood a little. Anyway, that dish soap was non-toxic, but it got used up over a year ago and Keith's brother Dave actually put something else in - oh, you're leavin'? Okay, well, the short version is: Keith made a killin' cleanin' people's windows by spittin' at 'em. That's actually gonna be the lesson for next week, 'cause I did find some non-toxic-"
His morning class has the single-highest GPA in the school
The afternoon class has the worst, because it's after lunch and after Ellis solved all the kinks in what the morning class (or as he calls them, the "trial run") wasn't able to perfect
Zoey
MATH.
SHE HATES IT, THEY HATE IT, BUT IT'S A CONSTANT IN EVERYONE'S LIFE SO WE'RE GOING TO LEARN.
MAKE PLANS FOR HOW TO TACKLE MATH
DON'T LET MATH PUSH YOU AROUND
YOU THINK 2 + 2 IS GOING TO STOP EQUALLING 4 BECAUSE YOU'RE GOING THROUGH A HARD TIME IN YOUR LIFE?
THE WORLD IS CRUEL AND YOU HAVE TO DIG IN AND FIND THE SOLUTION, NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES TO SURVIVE
STOP CRYING, STACEY, MATH ISN'T GOING TO MAGICALLY GET EASIER 'CAUSE YOU CRIED ALL OVER YOUR WORK
YOU WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE? UNIVERSITY? A PETTING ZOO? ALL OF THOSE TAKE MATH
GRIT YOUR TEETH, GROW UP, AND JUST ACCEPT IT
EYES ON YOUR OWN TEST, DYLAN
Somehow the easier of the two math teachers
Louis
Math <3
"Great work, Cindy! I'm starting to see some serious improvement in your attendance!"
"Someone's already in the bathroom, Sanjit. You can go when they get back :)"
"Hey everyone! I just heard we're a whole chapter ahead of the other class! Go team!"
"Pronouns? Mine are only amateurs! Haha! But please let me know what you'd prefer and I'll write it on the attendance sheet. I've been using he/they lately!"
💖 Integrals are integral to learning! 💖
"The test will be multiple choice."
"I'm sorry, Rebecca, but I was very clear when I said blue ink wasn't acceptable. Make this a lesson on paying attention to the little things."
"Hey - the bell doesn't dismiss you. I dismiss you."
"Any questions? Rodney, I already answered that. I can't repeat every little thing."
"Wow! Everyone did amazing on yesterday's pop quiz! I guess that means the next one should be harder, huh? Haha!"
Francis
'Teaches' history
Does not stay a chapter ahead
Actually reads the chapter out loud and learns right alongside the rest of them
"'The women that stayed behind had to get factory jobs, which they were unwilling to give up when the men returned from war.' Hey, shit, I didn't know that. That's cool as hell."
Frequently leaves the class to go see if Louis knew
End of the year party for the longest word Mr. Francis sounded out
Accepts cash bribes
Grades based on how long the essay looks
"I mean - yeah, sure, the kid copied it, but you gotta give him points for figuring out what to copy."
At least one kid has 105% from doing all the bonus work
At least one exam was about the Lord of the Rings due to an elaborate prank with the teacher's copy of the textbook
"Well, how in hell was I supposed to know? You were the one that said dwarves were real, Louis. Sorry - little elves. Been workin' on my correctness lately."
Bill
Vice-principal
Has been doing this job a long time, but has never seen what these kids are up to their phones now
Stands for the anthem and the announcements
Heartfelt one-on-ones where the kid opens up, just to be suckerpunched with the in-school suspension they thought they'd dodged
"You're on the path to a real FaceBook, missy - a mug shot for selling crack."
The most efficient PTA meetings in the state
Openly drinks from a flask
Doesn't know if the kids calling him 'B-Block' is some sort of prison thing or some sort of rapper, and is prepared to adjust his disapproval accordingly once he finds out
Challenges kids to the Pacer Fitness Test for charity
Wins
Y'all hear me out: the l4d and 2 survivors but as teachers
Coach is the coach duh
Rochelle is the digital media teacher
Nick is the business teacher
Ellis is a substitute teacher
Zoey is the front office worker
Louis is the coding teacher
Francis is a bus driver
And bill is the janitor
