The Redcliffe Shot Tower was a historic shot tower in the English city of Bristol. It was the progenitor of many similar towers built around the world. The tower stood at the corner of Redcliffe Hill and Redcliffe Parade, in the suburb of Redcliffe, between the years of 1782 and 1968 when it was demolished.

In 1775, William Watts, a plumber, started converting his house, near St Mary Redcliffe Church, into the world's first shot tower, in order to make lead shot by his innovative tower process. He did this by adding a tower atop his house, and by excavating a shaft into the soft sandstone below, achieving a total drop of around 90 feet (27 m). By 1782, the tower was complete and in production, and Watts was granted a patent on his process, which involved pouring molten lead through a perforated zinc pan into water below thus producing round shot pellets....

The lower image shows the "NEW" shot tower on Bristol's Cheese Lane. Its no longer in use for lead shot production, and is listed Grade II as "Sheldon Bush and Patent Shot Company Limited".

The "NEW" tower was designed as a replacement by E.N. Underwood and Partners, a firm of structural engineers, for the Sheldon Bush and Patent Shot Company Limited. It was constructed on a site already in use for other purposes by that company, and is some 500 yards (460 m) from the site of its predecessor. The structure is of reinforced concrete, with a twelve sided crucible room at the top, giving it an outline reminiscent of a cotton bud. It is the last such tower to be built, one of the few to be built in the 20th century, and one of only three to survive in England. It received the Civic Design Award from the Bristol Civic Society for the year it was completed in 1969.

The tower is 142 feet (43 m) tall, giving a drop distance for the lead shot from the crucible room of 120 feet (37 m). The crucible room has a diameter of 24 feet (7.3 m) and originally housed a gas fired cast iron cauldron, for melting the lead ingots. A lift provided access to the crucible room for both personnel and ingots, along with an emergency staircase. The lead shot fell into a tank of cooling water at the foot of the tower, and were transferred by a conveyor belt to hoppers in the roof of the processing building.

How to repair a sink pipe

A leaky, loose drain pipe can be a nuisance, but it doesn't have to mean a hefty repair bill. Granted, plumbers aren't cheap, but in most cases, you don't need a plumber. From the sink to the drain piece where water drains through the floor or wall, every part is removable and replaceable. Once you know which part is causing the problem, you can either tighten it or replace it. If you are not sure, check each part and tighten it.

Step 1

Remove anything that is under the sink and move nearby items such as wastebaskets or toilet paper holders out of the way, as this will make the job a little easier.

Step 2

Turn off the water supply to the sink. Look for a water shut-off valve under the sink - usually a knob or lever on the water line - or on the main water line leading into the house. Alternatively, look for the valve at the water meter or near the water heater.

Place a shallow glass or metal bowl or pan under the sink's trap.

Remove the drain-cleaning plug from the bottom of the lowest part of a P or S trap. Or unscrew the bottom of a bottle cap that looks like a pocket hole pipe. Use pliers or a wrench to do this, if necessary. Older PVC pipes and metal pipes do not have cleaning plugs; in this case, you must remove the trap.

Step 3

Disconnect the couplings on both sides of the trap - one between the trap and the sink, one between the trap and the drain pipe. Use an adjustable wrench or pipe wrench to grip the pipe and loosen the connection. Turn the first coupling counterclockwise to loosen it. Leave it just on, then repeat the process with the other coupling. Once both are almost free, support the siphon with one hand while removing the coupling.

Rotate the coupler in the center of the trap to make removal easier if your trap is so equipped. Alternatively, you can pull a stuck trap down and out to loosen it. Hold the trap level until you can drain the water it contains, especially if the trap is not equipped with a cleaning cap.

This is usually a round, serrated nut that attaches the stopper. Loosen and remove it. Pull the stopper rod out of the pipe from the inside of the sink.

Loosen the nut that secures the sink basket under the sink with a locknut wrench, open-end wrench, or similar adjustable wrench. Turn the nut while holding the lid from inside the sink to prevent it from turning with it. Insert a screwdriver or pliers through the cross brace to get a good grip.
