How a trip to a dentist started a book series - books with an edgy theme
Tumblr media
My name is Anietta Strong, and I wanted to introduce myself and the characters in my books. All my characters meet up at some stage and when it is all boiled down just two main characters emerge. Okay, there are many sub-characters, and some might argue a few should be considered main characters, but that's life. I did write under a male pen name earlier, I'm unsure why I chose that, especially as most of my books have an LGBT theme. Maybe it was also the BDSM leaning too and perhaps I felt that more matched a man. Like all mistakes those can be corrected and now I'm writing how I feel best suits me.
All my books are based in two locations. The west of England, predominately Bristol and Bath. Write about what you know was what has guided me, just as writing without fear. I write for me, nobody else. I know this part of the world just as much as I know North Yorkshire, another part of the world I've spent a lot of time. Rosedale, Pickering, The North Yorkshire Moors, Whitby too. Bram Stoker country where Dracula was created.
It all started in a dentist waiting room. I was reading Readers Digest - (is that still around?) while I awaited treatment. There was an article about a woman who led a double life. By day she operated in the London High Court as a successful barrister. By night she donned her leathers and a basque with fishnet stockings and men would visit her to be abused and beaten. I thought - Oh my God what a theme! I imagined some blonde goddess figure whom men worshipped and would pay her a fortune to be their abuser. It also struck me how dangerous such a profession might me? Like a prostitute, although the risks taken were the only comparison between professions, they would both work alone, either visiting men in hotel rooms or providing the venue themselves. But, what about the day job for my main character? Surely, like the barrister, she would have an innocent job and her nighttime activity would be her closely guarded secret. A name too? Blonde suggested Scandinavian, of Swedish or Norwegian origin, so I came up with Petra Larson. The surname borrowed from the author Steig Larson who wrote 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' She had to be dangerous too and what better way than to make her a champion karate expert who represented England at the junior European Championships. (I learned later; karate is not an Olympic sport.) The first book was The Ice Queen, it briefly had another name with its male author, but I changed that when I decided it needed a woman at the helm. Her innocent day job was working in a Bath estate and lettings agency and here she meets a man with whom she has a brief but ill-fated affair. The shady job outside the property business is not the only secret Petra keeps closely guarded. Equally so, is the massive, opulent apartment she lives in on the outskirts of Bristol. This apartment becomes centre stage in the second book we are close to revealing.
Soon an event takes place which turns her whole world upside down. An act of sadistic brutality which defines her life thereon. It also develops the theme which runs throughout all the following books I wrote. The second book, The Weekend introduces a character who appears only in a very minor role within The Ice Queen. Petra's clients have always been men. Quite a mixture too, from company executives to bishops and Members of Parliament. So, when she is contacted by a woman seeking atonement it is quite a shock! What follows is a steamy torrid affair which centres around a night of savage and brutal sadism which brings both women together in a fatalistic way which is later sealed one stormy night when together they stand naked and exposed to the raging elements of a storm lashed beach on the south coast of England. The book ends with just Petra leaving to recover in the wilds of Montana USA with her life in ruins. Petra's story continues in the next book, The Choice and this places her in Yorkshire, located where I described earlier.
Petra tries to pick up the wreckage of her life, but even so she is dragging baggage with her, and her old ways are not far out of sight but following behind her at a convenient distance. She meets an older woman who likes to ride the moors late at night on a huge white horse. Meanwhile, Petra is trying to seek a release from her former lover. Petra quickly engages with a young, pretty but lonely teenager who become infatuated with her. There is a sizeable age gap between them, and this arouses Petra as their physical closeness creates the inevitable opportunity to become lovers. Eventually, after a tragic fire with fatal consequences, they leave and return to Petra's huge Bristol apartment. I wasn’t sure at this stage whether to continue with Petra as a character? I’d left her with her new teenage lover and as she’d had such a harrowing time over the course of three books, I wondered if it was best to give her a period of long overdue happiness and introduce a new main character.
Jasmine Crealey or Jaz as she preferred, was the solution. I wanted a main character who was very different to Petra. Jaz was married, with a teenage daughter, she had an interesting day job as a counsellor. No secret nighttime job as in Petra’s case. I chose a job which created openings to meet other interesting people which would create other storylines. In the first book, The Scorned Woman, Jaz meets a troubled teenager, who is in the care system while her mentally deranged mother was being treated after having been sectioned under the mental health act. Jaz meets a new man in her life who sweeps her off her feet and provides hope for future happiness with her marriage on the rocks. A lot happens in a fast-moving story which ends in a way she never expected. This book was followed up by The Killing where Jaz meets a battered and broken woman client trying to escape from a violent, abusive relationship. It also focuses on a modern mother’s greatest fear, that of on-line grooming and the risks teenage girls face when a predatory paedophile identifies them as a willing victim. The end creates for Jaz what is a satisfactory solution but one which will leave doubt in the reader’s mind.
At this stage I wondered about introducing a new character into Jaz’s life. Then I had a far better idea. I had characters in abundance in my six previous books, so why not engineer a situation where we bring ALL the characters together in any following books. Jaz is on a railway station platform waiting for a train in The Letters. Petra is literally on the edge as her life has spiralled out of control and she now feels alone and unloved. The two women meet as Petra prepares to throw herself under a passing train. Through a series of letters, left behind in Petra’s huge apartment, Jaz tries to repair the pieces of a fragmented life only to put Petra in danger from events within her own past life rising like a phoenix from the ashes.  Jaz now goes on the back burner having left for a new life in Boston USA. I choose that location for a lot of my books because I frequently travelled there in a previous life before I took up writing.
Resurrection, my fifth and final book in the series, brings Petra back centre stage and sees a surprising return from an unhappy past event. Briefly, there is hope for happiness and soon characters abound, all emerging out of the shadows from many of my previous books. It sounds chaotic but it is all very logical, and the meetings are carefully choreographed like a well-rehearsed dance routine.
I sensed my connection with Petra Larson had run its course. How long could this woman struggle with her relationships. Surely everyone was entitled to love, albeit a long way down a well-trodden path.
I wrote The Lover’s Wall and explored one man’s quest to find someone from his past after ruthless ambition had driven him into a corner from which there is no escape, unless he looks at his life and takes a fresh approach. There are many parts of this book which reflect me own life

Albania has emerged as a popular destination for dental tourists, offering high-quality dental care at competitive prices. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind the rise of dental tourism in Albania and the benefits it offers to patients.
One of the main reasons why Albania has become a popular destination for dental tourism is the cost savings that patients can enjoy. Dental treatments in Albania are significantly cheaper compared to Western European countries or the United States. This cost advantage allows patients to undergo procedures such as dental implants, crowns, and veneers at a fraction of the cost they would pay in their home country Dentista in Albania.
In addition to the cost savings, Albania boasts a high standard of dental care, with many dentists trained in top European universities and clinics. Dental clinics in Albania are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and follow strict hygiene and safety protocols, ensuring that patients receive high-quality treatment. Moreover, many dentists in Albania speak English fluently, making it easy for international patients to communicate with their healthcare providers.
Another advantage of dental tourism in Albania is the short waiting times for appointments and procedures. Patients can often schedule dental treatments quickly, without having to wait for months as they might in their home country. This allows patients to address their dental issues promptly and return home with a brand-new smile in a relatively short period of time.
Furthermore, Albania is a beautiful country with a rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, making it an attractive destination for dental tourists looking to combine dental treatment with a holiday. Patients can explore historic sites, relax on pristine beaches, or enjoy delicious Albanian cuisine during their stay, turning their dental trip into a memorable vacation experience.
Overall, dental tourism in Albania offers a winning combination of affordability, quality, convenience, and a unique travel experience. With its skilled dentists, modern clinics, and competitive prices, Albania is a top choice for patients seeking dental treatment abroad.

Has anyone ever told you that you were really pretty? Yes.
Do you relate to main characters in novels often? Not really, but this is also because I never read novels anymore. I'd prefer a story where I can hardly relate to characters, though. Anyone too similar to me I honestly might find distracting.
Do you listen to a wide variety of music? I try to but I usually end up falling back to K-pop or K-hiphop.
Does nature feel magical to you? Magical is not the right word for me – I see it as more realistic than anything. The way it doesn't choose its targets, how no one has any way of knowing just how strong an earthquake or tsunami or tornado can be...it doesn't remind me of anything else other than the concept of reality and that it's the single most powerful force we'll ever have to deal with.
What holiday are you looking forward to next? Counting my birthday, that. I otherwise don't really 'look forward' to holidays for the reason they're being celebrated.
Do you take a lot of pictures? Something I plan to do this year so that I can save more memories. I barely had photos in 2023.
Did you ever go through a phase when you didn’t want to take medicine? I mean yeah, as a child. I didn't like the taste of Tempra and always tried to get away from it whenever I got sick lol. Of course this kind of thing changes as you get older and realize medicines are made to help you, so as nasty as something tastes or how big a pill can possibly get I just suck it up and take them.
Do you love popsicles? They're very refreshing on a hot day but apart from that I wouldn't seek them out. I don't like ice cream in general.
Do you have to hem up a lot of your pants? Nah, too much work (even if I am short). I just roll them up.
Do you shop at Goodwill? We don't have that here.
What’s your natural hair color? Black.
Do you like your smile? I do! I usually like how it turns out in photos. There was a time where I felt awkward smiling with my teeth because my front ones used to be unaligned and it was super noticeable every time I pretty much opened my mouth, but now that I've got braces I feel a lot more confident.
Was the last book you read good? I'm currently reading Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 and it's so right up my alley. A rare exception for me as far as devoting time for novels. It's written biography-style and tackles mental health and the reality of women's situation in Korea – and all these things have made reading this book a breeze for me.
Do you make grocery lists? I'm not the one who usually does the groceries, but when I do I tend to wing it. I'll maybe place in bullets the absolute do-not-leave-the-store-without-these items, but I wouldn't make an entirely detailed list.
Do you take walks often? Yes, as often as I can. I've come to enjoy walking over the last six months and plan on keeping it up.
Does sunlight make you feel happier? No, unless I'm at the beach.
Do you make wishes on the moon? Not make wishes per se, but looking at the moon kind of rouses the wanderlust in me in many ways. Like it gets me thinking how amazing it is that humans have landed on it, how many people are also possibly looking at it the same time I am...
What are you most looking forward to this spring? We don't have spring.
Are you fulfilling your passion in life? Maybe not right now. Currently I'm in a phase where I'm just...going through the motions, waiting for the perfect timing to be someplace else and new. I'd love to be able to get back on track soon.
Do you daydream a lot? Kind of, yeah.
What are your dreams? Mostly about things I already think about a lot when conscious.
Do you take medications? Nope.
When was the last time you went to the doctor? Apart from the dentist to get my braces readjusted, the last time I was in for an emergency was March last year when I had to rush to the hospital to get anti-rabies and tetanus shots.
What helps you fall asleep? YouTube background noise.
Do you love sushi? I love sushi. I've had it like 4 times in the last week alone lol.
What’s your favorite type of seafood? Oyster, mussels, and any kind of sashimi.
Do you have stomach problems? Just mild lactose intolerance.
Do you enjoy editing photos? Nope.
What was the last photo filter you used? My sister was playing around with the emoji filters on TikTok that can copy your expressions as you do them, and I joined in on the fun.
Do you live a simple life? I wouldn't say so. I'm pretty materialistic.
Do you own a pair of pajamas with foxes on them? Nope.
Peace signs or hearts? Like, for a photo? I tend to lean towards peace signs.
What kind of pie is your favorite? Just any pie with no fruits in them is fine haha.
Do you think you could go a whole year without eating dessert? Yes.

Tooth Extractions in Huntington Beach: Reasons and Indications for Treatment
Tooth extractions are a common dental procedure that involve the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. While most people would prefer to avoid the need for a tooth extraction, there are several situations in which it may be necessary. In this article, we will explain the reasons and indications for tooth extractions, as well as the tooth extraction in Huntington Beach.
Types of tooth extractions
There are two main types of tooth extractions: simple extraction and surgical extraction. A simple extraction is a relatively straightforward procedure in which a tooth is removed with the use of forceps. A surgical extraction is a more complex procedure that involves making an incision in the gum tissue to remove a tooth that has not yet emerged from the gum line.
Tumblr media
Indications for tooth extractions
There are several reasons why a tooth extraction may be necessary. Some of the most common indications for tooth extractions include:
Tooth decay and damage
If a tooth is severely decayed or damaged, it may need to be removed in order to prevent further infection or damage to surrounding teeth.
Crowding and impaction
Sometimes teeth become crowded in the mouth, which can cause discomfort or make it difficult to properly clean the teeth. In other cases, a tooth may become impacted, which means it is unable to emerge from the gum line. In these situations, a tooth extraction may be necessary to alleviate discomfort and prevent further dental problems.
Gum disease
Severe gum disease can cause teeth to become loose or damaged. In some cases, a tooth extraction may be necessary to prevent further damage to surrounding teeth.
The tooth extraction procedure
The tooth extraction procedure will depend on the type of extraction being performed. In general, the procedure will involve the following steps:
Preparation for the procedure
Before the procedure, the dentist will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic. This will help to minimize discomfort during the extraction.
The extraction process
During the extraction process, the dentist will use forceps to gently remove the tooth from its socket. If a surgical extraction is required, an incision will be made in the gum tissue to access the tooth.
Post-operative care
After the tooth extraction procedure is complete, the dentist will provide instructions on how to care for the extraction site. This may involve taking pain medication, avoiding certain foods, and maintaining good oral hygiene practices.
Conclusion
Tooth extractions may be necessary for a variety of reasons, but they are a safe and effective way to alleviate discomfort and prevent further dental problems. If you are in need of a tooth extraction, we recommend visiting Cleopatra Dental in Huntington Beach. Our experienced team of dentists will work with you to ensure a comfortable and successful procedure.

PEDRO PASCAL GQ GERMANY - OCTOBER 2020
Original text by Esma Annemon Dil
Fotos by Doug Inglish
Styling by Simon Robins
Translated by @thedanceronthestreets
Intro: A broken tooth could almost have been the reason for our meeting with Pedro Pascal to be cancelled - and with that our conversation about roots, his new movie and times of change.
Interview: It is almost eery how empty the streets of Los Angeles are under the gleaming sun. While Europe is finding its "new normal", people in L. A. are cutting their own hair even without being neurotics. Many of them have not seen their friends in half a year. The pandemic is out of control. So are the reactions to the situation. Inviting someone to a "distance drink" in the backyard can lead to the same consternation as proposing a relationship partner exchange.
All the more of a surprise was Pedro Pascal's immediate confirmation. To the drink, not the partner exchange. He is one of the winners this year - and if Corona had not forced the movie industry to go on a holiday, he probably would not have had the time for this drink. After "Game of Thrones", the series in which his head was squished, followed 2015 the leading role in "Narcos" as a DEA agent on the hunt for Pablo Escobar, and now the leap onto the big Hollywood screen. As of 1. October the Chilean will appear in the blockbuster "Wonder Woman 1984". Furthermore, the second season of the "Star Wars" series "The Mandalorian" will start in October with him as the main character - unfortunately underneath the helmet. But we all seem to be under the same helmet in 2020. It is this man we want to meet, who worked as a waiter in New York a couple of years ago. Whose parents are political refugees that settled in Texas, and one day their son decided to walk into a drama club in high school.
And then the cancellation. While we were preparing the house and garden for Pedro's drink and fashion shoot, which isn't an easy task under L. A.'s restrictions, his management called in with terrible news: Pedro has - no, not Corona - had to receive emergency surgery due to a sore tooth and is now lying in bed with a swollen cheek, making talking or shooting impossible. The sun shines onto empty streets. And our empty garden.
A few days later, he stands in front of the door anyway, no huge bulge in his face, but stitches in his gum. No limousine service that dropped him off, he arrived in his own car and picked up his makeup artist on the way. He helps her to carry in all the equipment and states first and foremost: "I've got time today!" What a star! It does not seem like we are about to ask him how he managed to become a Hollywood sensation, but rather him asking us that question. Pedro Pascal! So, what kind of star is he then?
Pedro Pascal: Sorry for ruining your plans. The operation was a total emergency.
GQ: Really? We were wondering whether the swelling was the result of a secret trip to the plastic surgeon. Apparently, because of the quarantine in Hollywood, their schedules are packed.
Sorry to disappoint you. A few days before our appointment I raced to the hospital with a tooth fracture and the worst pain I've ever felt - a hospital where the severe Corona cases are treated. I was unable to contact any dentists! Right before I parked, a specialist called back. I'll spare you the details of the surgery, gruesome. The pain was excruciating despite the 10 anaesthetic shots. The doctor said I wasn't the only one going through this, a lot of people grind their teeth at night thanks to stress.
What are you most afraid of at the moment?
The way the government is handling the pandemic scares me more than the virus itself. The lack of intelligent crisis management is a moral disgrace. The leadership crisis makes orphans out of all of us - we're left to fend for ourselves.
How have you spent the last few months?
With frozen pizza in jogging trousers in Venice Beach. I live in a rear building that's in the garden belonging to a family. In reality there are enough good takeout restaurants around that area, but for some reason I like salami pizza from the supermarket.
That doesn't exactly sound like the movie star lifestyle. What does it feel like to be forced from top speed to zero?
Considering the things happening in this world, my own state really isn't the top priority. But I would have to lie, if I said I wasn't disappointed. The entire cast and crew of "Wonder Woman 1984" put so much heart and soul into the production. We had so much fun on set. I had hoped to carry this feeling of exuberance around the globe to the openings of this movie.
You are part of a political, socialist family that fled the Pinochet regime in Chile. What do you remember from back then?
My sister and I were born in Chile, but I was only nine months old when we claimed asylum in Denmark. From there, we moved to San Antonio in Texas, where my dad worked as a doctor in a hospital.
Texas isn't exactly considered to be socialist utopia. How well did you settle in?
San Antonio isn't a cowboy city but rather very diverse with large Asian, Afro-American and Latino communities. In my memory it's a romantic place, culturally inclusive. The cultural shock only hit when we moved to Orange County in California later. Suddenly, the environment was white, preppy and conservative.
How were you welcomed in California?
To this day I'm ashamed when I think about how I let my classmates call me Peter without correcting them. I'm Pedro. Even without growing up in Chile, the country and language are part of me. I was quite unhappy in that place. At least I was able to switch schools and visit one in Long Beach, where I felt more comfortable. With its theatre programme, I found my path.
Could you visit your family's homeland as a child?
Yes, after my parents ended up on a list of expats that were permitted to re-enter the country. First, there was a big family gathering, then me and my sister were parked at some relatives' place for a few months while my parents returned to Texas. They probably needed a break from us. They'd had us at a very young age, had a vibrant social life, and my mother was doing her doctorate in psychology.
Was your mother a typical young psychologist that tested her knowledge at home?
You mean whether I was her lab rat? Absolutely. I can remember weird sessions camouflaged as games, where someone would watch my reactions to different toys. Even though I couldn't have been older than 6, I knew what was happening. My favourite thing was to be asked about my dreams. That was always a great opportunity to make up fantastic stories.
Was that your first performance?
Definitely! My strong imagination alarmed my mother, because I'd rather live in my fantasy world than in real life. I didn't like school. I ended up in the "problematic kid" category. At some point the subjects got more interesting and my grades improved. So many children are unnecessarily diagnosed with learning disabilities without considering that school can be daunting. Why is it acceptable to be bored out of your mind in class, when there are more stimulating ways to convey knowledge?
With everything happening in the world this summer: Do you believe that social hierarchy structures are genuinely being reconsidered?
Hopefully. After the lockdown my first contact with people was at the Black Lives Matter protest. The atmosphere was peaceful and hopeful until the police got involved and provoked violence. At least during these times we can't avoid problems or distract ourselves from them as easily as we usually do. It seems that the pandemic provided us with a new sense of clarity: we don't want to go on like this.
The trailer of "Wonder Woman 1984" represents the optimism of the 80s. That almost makes one feel nostalgic nowadays.
That holds true. It's two hours of happiness. Patty Jenkins, the director, managed to make a movie full of positive messages. We shot in Washington, D. C., then in London and Spain - which now sounds like a different time.
Do you miss travelling?
I've only now realised what a privilege it is to just pack up your things and fly anywhere. With an American passport you can travel freely. And that's why the small radius we live in now is kind of absurd. Over the last few years I often retreated in between takes, because I was always on the road and overstimulated. Friends complained about how comfortable I had become. We all took social interactions for granted and realise now how reliant we are on human connection. Now, I wistfully think about all the party and dinner invitations I declined in the past.
In L. A., people spend more time indoors or in nature than in other metropolises. Could this city become your safe haven after New York City?
My true home is my friends. Ever since I was young I've lived the life of a nomad and haven't set roots anywhere. Until recently, my physical home was a place for arriving and leaving and hence I didn't want to overcomplicate living by owning lots of things. The opposite actually: Without having read Marie Kondo's book, I got rid of all the stuff that was unnecessary and lived a very minimalistic lifestyle.
Is there something you collect or could never say goodbye to?
Books! I still own the literature I read during my teen and university years. Recently I found a box of old theatre scripts and materials back from my uni days at NYU. I can't separate from art either, same as lamps or old pictures. Furniture and clothes are no problem though, they can be chucked.
Do you remember any roles that were defined by their costumes?
Yes, "Game of Thrones" comes to mind immediately. During that time I first understood what it means, as an actor, to be supported by a look. I owe that to costume designer Michele Clapton. She developed these very feminine robes and brocade cloaks for my role that looked very masculine when I wore them. I felt sexy in them. And very important were of course Lindy Hemming's power suits and Jan Sewell's blond hair for the tycoon villain Maxwell Lord in "Wonder Woman 1984". Relating to the style, I couldn't really see myself in the role since the shapes and colours of the 80s don't really fit my body. My type is the 70s.
Do you adopt such inspirations into your private closet?
At this point in time, I'll choose any comfortable outfit over a cool look. Sometimes I mourn the days when I defined myself with fashion. It's a bit mad when I think about how, in the 90s as a teenager, I would go to raves; a proper club kid with crazy outfits: overalls, chute trousers, soccer shirts and a top hat like in "The cat in the hat knows a lot about that!" by Dr Seuss. Later in NYC I was part of a group that placed immense value on wearing a certain style. The fact that I only walk around in joggers nowadays is actually unacceptable!
Normally, actors who work on comic screen adaptations become bodybuilders and eat ten boiled chicken breasts per day. You don't?
My body wouldn't be able to handle that. I find it difficult enough to maintain a minimum level of fitness. As of your mid 40s, you suddenly need a lot more discipline. Until the tooth incident happened, I worked out a couple of times a week with a trainer to keep the quarantine body in shape.
What would annoy you the most, if you were your own roommate?
I can be very bossy. I have to gather all my goodwill not to force my movie choice on to everyone else. When I want something, I'm not passive aggressive about it, I attack head on. Also, I can get caught up in tunnel vision: When i feel down, I can't imagine that I'm ever going to feel better again. I have difficulty with seeing the bigger picture when experiencing problems or emotions. Method acting really wouldn't be my thing. That's why I try to only work on projects that feel good and where people encourage and lift each other up.
While you were trying on the outfits you pointed out a lack of self-esteem. How does that coincide with your career?
Isn't it interesting how traits and circumstances go hand in hand? Self-esteem comes from the inside, but it's also influenced by what society believes. We use critical stares from the outside against ourselves. I lived in New York for 20 years, I studied there and worked as a waiter up until my mid 30s, because I couldn't live off acting. It was always so close. The disappointment of always just barely missing a perfect part or opportunity is exhausting. When is the right time to stop trying and what's plan b? That's not just a question actors ask themselves, but anybody who struggles to earn a livelihood - unrelated to how much potential they have or how close their dream may seem. We are beginning to see now how our narrow definition of success is destroying our communities. At the same time, it's becoming obvious that, until this day, your family background and skin colour determine your chances of living a dignified existence.
What are the positives of becoming a leading man later in life?
I have the feeling that I've got control over my life - without the pressure of having to accept projects or be a social media personality. That surely also has to do with the fact that I'm a man. Women are surely pressured to appear quirky at any age.
Life is always a management of risks - especially at this time. For what would you risk losing something?
Usually, if you don't play the game you're not going to win anything. That applies to friendship, love, work, creativity. Anything that really means something to me, is worth the risk.
Wonder woman 1984 will appear in cinemas 01.10. The 800 million dollar earning DC comic franchise is moving into the New York 80s with its sequel. It looks spectacular - only Pedro Pascal with blond hair in a three piece Wall Street suit looks better.

Day 55 – the underwater restaurant
We woke up this morning with anticipation. We didn’t go to breakfast because today we are having lunch at the world renowned underwater restaurant, 5.8 Undersea Restaurant at Hurawalhi.
We did some morning admin and then spent a couple of hours at the beach bar with Ali, who is now making S a very sugar free lime daiquiri.
At 1:15pm, we put on our finest attire (no shoes needed) and boarded the speedboat to Hurawalhi island. Hurawalhi is one of Komandoo’s 11 sister resorts and apparently the top resort in the group. It was only built in 2016 and used to be an uninhabited island. It is super posh, read multiple $1,000s a night and is frequented primarily by Russians, Indians and folks from the Middle East. Too rich for our blood. Lunch will sit you back at least $500 but it’s worth it for a one-time experience.
The restaurant is in a plexiglass cylinder, the top of which is a few feet below water. There are 10 tables, but there was only one other couple at lunch while we were there. Of course they were German speaking. The lady showed up in high heels with a Dolce & Gabbana bag, only to be told she had to put her shoes in the shoe locker as this restaurant is barefoot only. Her partner was in a casual suit. S was in a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and no shoes. J was in a bikini and cover-up. We obviously had a different understanding of this restaurant than the Germans. It should be noted that S has not worn shoes for 5 days running.
The views from the restaurant were unparalleled. It is surrounded by coral and a sunken dhoni (a traditional Maldivian fishing boat). Fish swam by us in droves. We saw various multi-coloured fish, including parrotfish, butterflyfish, grouper, etc. The Germans even pointed out a small shark to us, which swam by on their side of the restaurant. As we about had the restaurant to ourselves, J took tonnes of photos. The sommelier is a photographer on the side, so he helpfully took lots of photos of the German couple and us.
J spent a good hour playing with one of the butterfly fish (see video). It is exceptionally friendly and will follow your finger around if you wave at it. At first we thought that the fish were entertaining us. It turns out we were entertaining the fish.
Lunch was 5 courses. We started with tuna tartare, next was scallops, the third course was red mullet, the penultimate course was lobster two ways and we finished with a deconstructed mango cheesecake. We topped it all off with a bottle of Sardinian Vermentino. We were not as precious as the Germans, who spent 30 minutes deciding on which Malbec to have (by the glass). Again, this restaurant is pricey, but well worth the cost to tick this off J’s bucket list. The food was very good. Our favourite dish was the dessert with the coconut sorbet.
In a bizarre accident, S’ dental crown broke while he was eating the lobster. He calmly handed a piece of the broken crown to J and asked her what it looked like. She thought it looked like a piece of tooth but didn’t understand where S would come up with one. S then said “Does this look like a piece of tooth?” J began to freak out. S calmly described his dental emergency as an annoying, but painless break in his crown. Over S’ objection, J put the piece of broken crown in her purse for safekeeping in case it can be glued back on (but S maintains this is not going to happen). Looks like we will be visiting a dentist on the main island or Kenya to sort this out. In the meantime, we are hoping it doesn’t get worse and that S doesn’t swallow his disintegrating crown.
We then hopped the speedboat back to Komandoo and stopped in at the main bar for a quick drink. S called his friend Ian in Australia for a quick catch-up and to natter about the India v Australia cricket match.
We then headed to dinner, which was barbecue night. J really enjoyed it. S was feeling a bit ropey after lunch so kept to chicken soup, corn and pasta salad. We finished the night with a nightcap at the main bar with Ali and Suraj. They clearly know us by now as Ali’s parting words were “I’ll see you in the morning!” After that we headed back to the room to finalise our itinerary for Kenya, which is our next stop.

Death toll in California mudslides rises to 17; more missing
By Max Ufberg, Mark Berman and Scott Wilson, Washington Post, January 10, 2018
MONTECITO, Calif.--Emergency crews climbed and clawed through thick flows of mud and dangerous debris Wednesday in some of Southern California’s most exclusive neighborhoods, as the death toll from the collapse of rain-soaked hillsides rose to 17 people with more than a dozen others missing.
This neighborhood of gated homes and sloping streets just south of Santa Barbara has taken on the character of a Hollywood set, weeks after flames threatened the kind of destruction that mudslides have done in days. Wide swaths of ash and earth have smashed multimillion-dollar homes into pieces, filled hotel lobbies with muck, and blocked the main highway from Los Angeles for miles with mud several feet deep.
But the human tragedy, which unfolded overnight Tuesday and continued Wednesday, far exceeded the emotional punch of the severe property damage. Whole families have been carried away by the mud. Rescued children who survived their parents remain in critical condition in a hospital whose staffers are challenged by road closures and their own damaged property. At least 13 other people are missing.
As helicopters picked families off the roofs of their battered homes, community members branched out on their own to look for survivors and bodies, searching creek beds and canyons, runoff points at local beaches, and splintered piles of wood and stone that once were homes.
Churches became shelters for the thousands of evacuees, who may have no place to live for months. Thousands of others are without water or power and may remain so for days.
Brenda Bottoms, a Montecito resident, described on Wednesday the muddy handprints she saw on the sides of neighboring homes, which had been slammed and partly carried off by a fast-moving mudflow.
“This is a neighborhood,” Bottoms said, tears running down her cheeks. “You know the family with five kids that live right over there. And now everything’s gone.”
The mudslides mark the cruel postscript to the Thomas Fire, which burned for much of December, becoming the largest wildfire by area in California history. For weeks before Christmas, flames scorched the steep hills above Montecito, squeezed between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean northwest of Los Angeles, forcing 9,000 residents to evacuate.
Firefighters from across the state worked to save nearly all of Montecito’s houses, an achievement that city residents describe as nothing short of a miracle given the intensity of the offshore winds and the ferocity of the fire that burned through tinder-dry brush and tree stands in a rainy season without rain.
The blaze left the mountains bare, especially along the slopes and in the canyons just above Montecito, a stretch running from near Westmont College to roughly Romero Canyon, where a few hundred residents were trapped temporarily by the mudslides.
Those neighborhoods, which include the homes of Oprah Winfrey, Rob Lowe and other Hollywood stars, are now the most vulnerable. Evacuation orders were issued days before the predicted downpour this week, sparing many when the hillsides, no longer held together by brush and trees, spilled into the neighborhoods.
Santa Barbara County fire officials said Wednesday that 100 homes were destroyed by the mudslides and an additional 300 were damaged. Many more remain in jeopardy--fire officials say as many as 1,500--but the weather could turn in their favor.
The National Weather Service forecasts sun and light wind through early next week, when work crews also expect that Highway 101 will reopen where it passes through Montecito. But periods of rain are predicted to follow.
One of the main arteries for the mud has been Hot Springs Road and Olive Mill Road, which join and run from the hills to the sea, passing Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, running over Highway 101 and ending at the exclusive Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club. Bodies have been found along its length, and a woman’s remains were recovered on Butterfly Beach, just below the Coral Casino.
Things looked “apocalyptic” after the deluge, said Lindsey Reed, 33, who works as a bartender and server at the private beach club.
“It’s terrifying, and you just have no control, and it’s taking out everything in its path,” she said.
Peter Hartmann, a dentist who lives in Santa Barbara and works in Montecito, watched crews gingerly dig through mounds of mud, unsure of what they would find. What they did discover was agonizing.
“A 2- or a 3-year-old girl had been pulled out of the mud by firefighters,” said Hartman, 60, recounting what he saw. “She wasn’t breathing yet, from what I understand from a neighbor who was there.”
Hartmann said “it was just heart-wrenching” to see her small, mud-covered body emerge. He said he recalled thinking, “God, just let her live.”
Rescue workers tended to her, cleaning the mud off her face. And as they cleaned her up, she started breathing.
“That firefighter actually broke down and cried after she was in the ambulance,” he said.
