2023 Global Bike Festival Recap
Shredding trails, grinding gravel and conquering cols is what a few of us from Bikeflights did this past weekend, along with hundreds of other mountain bikers, gravel riders and roadies, in beautiful Saalbach, Austria. That’s where the world’s favorite bike channels – Global Cycling Network (GCN), Global Mountain Bike Network (GMBN) and Electric Mountain Bike Network (EMBN) – were hosting the Global Bike Festival, a second-year event that drew riders from all over Europe and beyond.
We were there to take care of our Bikeflights customers from the US and UK who had shipped their bikes round-trip using our global shipping service to the stunningly scenic Alpine Valley. As the official bike shipping service of the Global Bike Festival, we had also helped GCN, GMBN and EMBN presenters get their bikes to and from Saalbach.
Little did customers and presenters know that International Shipping Manager Brenna Clancy was onsite in Austria, directly overseeing their bicycle shipments. She was joined by fellow Bikeflights Marketing and Event Team Members Kerry Werner, Michael Potter and Sue George.
The Global Bike Fest kicked off a long weekend on Thursday with a full slate of master classes for attendees to learn and practice a variety of skills from track standing to jumping. Presenters joined in on the action not only to teach and encourage riders, but also to do what they do best: entertain.
Festival days 2 and 3 brought options for group rides and challenges. Roadies took on the famous Grossglocker climb, while gravity loving riders tackled the Big 5 Challenge descending five favorite local mountain bike trails. Gravel riders could explore some peaceful, Alpine backroads on their own or participate in the Glemmduro (race).
Upon receiving our own bikes, we were eager to assemble them and sample the riding that the Saalbach-Hinterglemm Valley has to offer. Of course, we couldn’t go to the Alps and not bring bikes, so we shipped our own bikes, too. Before and during the Global Bike Fest, we enjoyed several chances to pedal up and down the local roads and trails. Our favorite ride involved a trip over to the Leogang Bike Park and two gondola rides and some singletrack.
It turns out that in and around Saalbach, no matter what bike you want to pedal, there are incredible views of snow-covered Alpine peaks to be enjoyed. Whether you opt to pedal to the top assisted or under your own power, we have just one piece of advice: remember to bring your camera!
When not riding, we were treated to talks by veteran riders like Marc Beaumont, who set an incredible world record for pedaling his bike around the globe in less than 80 days, and retired pro road racer Jens Voigt, who shared anecdotes from growing up in an East German sports school and racing in the Tour de France.
Our Bikeflights Bike Boxes were featured in two of the challenges that were part of GCN’s Live Show, where the GCN and GMBN presenters competed against each other. Spoiler Alert: What we learned was that the mountain bikers turned out to be faster than the road cyclists in packing a bike into a Bikeflights Bike Box Large (BBL), and BBLs work pretty well for setting your much deserved beer on after you finish packing your bike!
Since the Global Bike Festivities wrapped up late Saturday night, and we had planned to stay until Monday to oversee the pickup of all the bikes being shipped back home, we were left with a bonus day to spend in and around Saalbach. There happened to be a UCI Mountain Bike World Cup happening on the other side of the mountain in Leogang. So we headed over to cheer on our favorite under 23 riders from one of our sponsored teams, the Bear National Team, and to watch the best elite men and women in the world race cross country.
Congrats to all the Bear Team riders who raced, including Jack Spranger, Robbie Day, Daxton Mock and Cobe Freeburn! Shout outs also go to Bailey Cioppa, Lauren Lackman, Cayden Parker and Brayden Johnson, four additional Bear Team riders who were racing in national team kits on behalf of Team USA for the weekend.
Check out also our event video recap below.

The first stage of the 2020 Tour Down Under started in Barossa and followed a tough 30km loop through the local countryside. The local wineries provided a beautiful backdrop to the race as the peloton tackled 5 laps of the circuit, and with the final climb coming just over 10km from the finish a sprint was far from certain. 2022 Global Bike Festival Recap
When the Global Cycling Network, perhaps better known GCN, chose Saalbach, Austria for the location of their inaugural Global Bike Festival, they knew that one logistical challenge would be figuring out the best way to get bikes to and from the event, which is located several hours via car and train from major international airports. So they reached out to us at BikeFlights to see if we could help, and of course, we said yes, we can get bikes there!
That’s how we found ourselves last week in the incredibly beautiful Saalbach-Hinterglemm Valley. If it’s a place that’s not already on your cycling destination bucket list, it probably should be.
The Saalbach-Hinterglemm Valley, which is most known for its world class skiing, offers something for almost every cyclist with countless gravel roads, paved roads and paths and mountain bike trails. And when you eventually need a break to recover from all the riding around there, you can enjoy countless great hiking trails, too.
In Saalbach, the hills truly are alive with riders on both traditional bikes and e-bikes pedaling all over them. We especially loved seeing families with kids of all ages enjoying riding with their moms and dads on the local paved paths, bike park trails and pump tracks.
Our very own Bill Alcorn, Sue George and Kent Sanchez arrived in what was initially a chilly, wet Alpine village well ahead of the Global Bike Festival to receive bikes prior to the first day of the Festival. We had shipped most of the GCN presenter bikes, including also Martyn Ashton’s Bowhead adaptive bicycle. And of course, we also shipped bikes for Festival attendees and ourselves because, well, how could you go to Saalbach and not ride?
The clouds did clear and the sun came out, giving us beautiful summer weather for a majority of the Festival. It also made for some pretty nice trail and gravel road conditions.
Bill, Sue and Kent took turns riding and staffing our BikeFlights booth during the course of the four-day festival. Among us, we got out for gravel rides, road rides and mountain bike rides. Sometimes, we had the pleasure of joining in on one of the many group rides that were offered each day. Other times, we headed out to do some of our own exploring. In between rides, we enjoyed the friendly, entertaining banter of GCN’s presenters from their various channels – GCN, GMBN, EMBN, which are available in several languages.
Saalbach is located in the Austrian Alps, which means there are lots of opportunities to climb (for a very long time!) high up and to enjoy expansive views of snow-covered mountain peaks in all directions. There’s also the option to take gondolas up to the mountains on either side of the valley. The gondolas provide access to numerous trails ranging from easier, more mellow, flowy, bermy trails to plunging steep, technical descents suitable for only the most advanced downhillers and enduro riders. You can even connect the trails of Saalbachtrails Saalbach to the trails at the world-famous Leogang Bike Park in the next valley over, making for some epic, all day riding excursions.
In Saalbach, a town of 2,300 full-time residents, it’s not just the riding you’ll fall in love with. You’ll be warmly welcomed and have the opportunity to enjoy many delicious dining options within their easily walkable downtown, or hop on a bike and pedal a few kilometres up or down the valley to enjoy a meal in a nearby village.
By the end of your stay, you’ll probably already be planning your next visit!
Stay tuned for dates to be announced for next year’s Global Bike Fest.

How To Run Off The Bike | Brick Running For Triathlon
//(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});//
Here is GTN’s guide to avoid that feeling of jelly legs and perfect running off the bike!
Subscribe to GTN: http://gtn.io/SubscribetoGTN Check out the GTN Shop: http://gtn.io/7A
We expect our bodies to go from sitting on a bike predominantly using our legs to being upright holding our full body weight and propelling us forward at our usual running pace – but without preparation and practise this can go horribly wrong.
Before you get on the bike spend a bit of time working out the best position for you. You need to find the happy balance between comfort, being aerodynamic, and being able to produce power. If you ticked the latter two but comfort is lacking then getting off the bike will at first seem a massive relief but it will detriment your run.
Cycling for a long duration at an intense effort will tighten up your hip flexors and often your back, if you can find a position that rotates your body forwards and keeps your hips more open it will make transferring to running that much easier.
It’s easy to to let your running form drop when you start out after the cycle. With tight hip flexors, it’s easy to to get a little hunched and get into more of a shuffle rather than a run. Focus on keeping your shoulders upright and open. This will automatically open up your hips and allow for a more efficient longer stride.

More often than not, we’ve come into triathlon with some level of experience in one of the disciplines, but the other two can end up being a bit of trial-and-error. Which is totally understandable.
Having witnessed and even made some of these mistakes ourselves, we have compiled a list of the most common ones and will be explaining how to avoid them.
