my final verdict now that i am nearing the end of this clusterfuck is that if you are setting up your own website to sell or paywall content you should not bother sending a newsletter unless you're really fucking determined
i am now paying for
SMTP2GO to actually process emails and not have them get sent straight to spam (note that the free version of this works fine for basic account stuff for your users) [this is $10 a month or $100 a year]
MailPoet refused to actually send emails for me but i still have to pay for the creator plan that doesn't include processing emails, because that's the only way to ensure that only paying members get emails (sending emails to nonpaying members would make it even more expensive) [this is $11 a month or $114 a year]
a PO box, because you're required to have an address in the footer of your emails and i'm not giving out my home address [this is $19 every three months or $58 a year]
none of which i would have to do if i just kept saying "if you want emails use an rss to email service like feedrabbit, here's a link, good fucking luck"
#original#if you know a way to convert wordpress posts into newsletters that doesn't require mailpoet let me fucking know#i'm mad that i have to give them money for basic filtering when they refused to do any actual work#i tried a bunch of different plugins and none of them fucking worked worth a shit#so i had to trudge my way back to mailpoet while being pissed off the entire time#deadass in three months i will probably send an email that just says 'here is a feedrabbit link i am not sending this again bye'#imagine if i were also paying for the paywalling service. fucking nightmare.

How a Good Email Newsletter Design Can Increase Engagement ?

In the digital age, email marketing continues to be one of the most effective strategies for businesses to engage with their audience. However, with the sheer volume of emails flooding inboxes every day, it's crucial to make your email newsletters stand out. The design of your email newsletter plays a vital role in capturing the attention of your recipients. With Email Design Services, you can create visually appealing newsletters that are aesthetically pleasing and aligned with your brand. A well-designed email featuring attractive colors, captivating images, and a clean layout will entice readers to explore further.

Email newsletter services are equipped with the knowledge and tools to optimize your newsletters for mobile devices, maximizing engagement.
Call-to-Action Elements
An effective email newsletter design includes clear and compelling call-to-action (CTA) elements. Whether it's encouraging readers to visit your website, make a purchase, or participate in a promotion, strategically placed CTAs can drive engagement. With the expertise of Email Marketing Services, you can create persuasive CTAs that stand out, using visually appealing buttons and enticing copy to entice recipients to take the desired action.
Personalization and Segmentation

By segmenting your audience and tailoring your email newsletters to specific groups, you can deliver content that resonates with each recipient's interests and preferences. Email Newsletter Design Services can assist you in implementing personalized elements, such as dynamic content and personalized greetings, enhancing the relevance and engagement of your newsletters.
Conclusion

The real problem with anonymity

I'm on tour with my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me in TUCSON (Mar 9-10), then San Francisco (Mar 13), Anaheim, and more!
According to "the greater internet fuckwad theory," the ills of the internet can be traced to anonymity:
Normal Person + Anonymity + Audience = Total Fuckwad
https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/greater-internet-fuckwad-theory
This isn't merely wrong, it's dangerously wrong. The idea that forcing people to identify themselves online will improve discourse is demonstrably untrue. Facebook famously adopted its "real names" policy because Mark Zuckerberg claimed to believe that "Having two identities for yourself is an example of a lack of integrity":
https://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/archives/2010/05/14/facebook-and-radical-transparency-a-rant.html
In service to this claimed belief, Zuckerberg kicked off the "nym wars," turning himself into the sole arbiter of what each person's true name was, with predictably tragicomic consequences:
https://www.kalzumeus.com/2010/06/17/falsehoods-programmers-believe-about-names/
Facebook is, famously, one of the internet's most polluted reservoirs of toxic interpersonal conduct. That's not despite the fact that people have to use their "real" names to participate there, but because of it. After all, the people who are most vulnerable to bullying and harassment are the ones who choose pseudonyms or anonymity so that they can speak freely. Forcing people to use their "real names" means that the most powerful bullies speak with impunity, and their victims are faced with the choice of retreat or being targeted offline.
This can be a matter of life and death. Cambodian dictator Hun Sen uses Facebook's real names policy to force dissidents to unmask themselves, which exposes them to arbitrary detention, torture, and extrajudicial killing. For members of the Cambodian diaspora, the choice is to unmask themselves or expose their family back home to retaliation:
https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/meghara/facebook-cambodia-democracy
Some of the biggest internet fuckwads I've ever met – and I've met some big ones! – were utterly unashamed about using their real names. Some of the nicest people I know online have never told me their offline names. Greater internet fuckwad theory is just plain wrong.
But that doesn't mean that anonymity is totally harmless. There is a category of person who reliably uses a certain, specific kind of anonymity to do vicious things that inflicts serious harm on whole swathes of people: corporate bullies.
Take Tinyletter. Tinyletter is a beloved newsletter app that was created to help people who just wanted to talk to others, without a thought to going viral or getting rich. It was sold to Mailchimp, which was sold to Intuit, who killed it:
https://www.theverge.com/24085737/tinyletter-mailchimp-shut-down-email-newsletters
Tinyletter was a perfect little gem of a service. It cost almost nothing to run, and made an enormous number of peoples' lives better every day. Shutting it down was an act of corporate depravity by some faceless Intuit manager who woke up one day and said "Fuck all those people. Just fuck them."
No one knows who that person was. That person will never have to look those people in the eyes – those people whose lives were made poorer for that Intuit executive's indifference. That person is the greater fuckwad, and that fuckwaddery depends on their anonymity.
Or take @Pixsy, a corporate shakedown outfit that helps copyleft trolls trick people into making tiny errors in Creative Commons attributions and then intimidates them into handing over thousands of dollars:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/01/24/a-bug-in-early-creative-commons-licenses-has-enabled-a-new-breed-of-superpredator/
Copyleft trolling is an absolutely depraved practice, a petty grift practiced by greedy fuckwads who are completely indifferent to the harm they cause – even if it means bankrupting volunteer-run nonprofits for a buck:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/02/commafuckers-versus-the-commons/
Pixsy claims that it is proud of its work "defending artists' rights," but when I named the personnel who signed their names to these profoundly unethical legal threats, Pixsy CEO Kain Jones threatened to sue me:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/02/13/an-open-letter-to-pixsy-ceo-kain-jones-who-keeps-sending-me-legal-threats/
The expectation of corporate anonymity runs deep and the press is surprisingly complicit. I once spent weeks working on an investigative story about a multinational corporation's practices. I spent hours on the phone with the company's VP of communications, over the course of many calls. When we were done, they said, "Now, of course, you can't name me in the article. All of that has to be attributed to 'a spokesperson.'"
I was baffled. Nothing this person said was a secret. They weren't blowing the whistle. They weren't leaking secrets. They were a corporate official, telling me the official corporate line. But they wouldn't sign their name to it.
I wrote an article about for the Guardian. It was the only Guardian column any of my editors there ever rejected, in more than a decade of writing for them:
https://memex.craphound.com/2012/05/14/anodyne-anonymity/
Given the press's deference to this anodyne anonymity, it's no wonder that official spokespeople expect this kind of anonymity. I routinely receive emails from corporate spokespeople disputing my characterization of their employer's conduct, but insisting that I not attribute their dubious – and often blatantly false – statements to them by name.
These are the greater corporate fuckwads, who commit their sins from behind a veil of anonymity. That brand of bloodless viciousness, depravity and fraud absolutely depends on anonymity.
Mark Zuckerberg claimed that "multiple identities" enabled bad behavior – as though it was somehow healthy for people to relate to their bosses, lovers, parents, toddlers and barbers in exactly the same way. Zuckerberg's motivation was utterly transparent: having "multiple identities" doesn't mean you "lack integrity" – it just makes it harder to target you for ads.
But Zuckerberg couldn't enshittify Facebook on his own. For that, he relies on a legion of anonymous Facebook managers. Some of these people undoubtably speak up for Facebook users' interests when their colleagues propose putting them in harm's way for the sake of some arbitrary KPI. But the ones who are making those mean little decisions? They absolutely rely on anonymity to do their dirty work.

Ex-Prosecutor Thinks Trump Is Accidentally Creating The Very Thing He Fears | HuffPost Latest News
Former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance explained how she believes the Trump White House’s buyout offer to all federal employees will backfire.
President Donald Trump “summoned the sleeping giant” of the civil service with the proposal that has drawn skepticism over its validity from critics, Vance warned in her “Civil Discourse” email newsletter.
Vance noted how in some cases ― detailed in online posts by federal workers ― it had actually appeared to spur them into staying in their roles to “hold the line” against Trump.
“On Reddit last night, it was clear that a sizeable number of federal employees are digging in for the fight,” wrote Vance.
“Donald Trump has always fantasized about a deep state inside of government that opposes him, something that didn’t exist,” she added. “Now, he is well on the way to creating one. It turns out federal employees take their oath, their job, and their duty to serve very seriously.”

How to read the new Witcher book, Crossroads of Ravens, in English (e-book) [GUIDE]
Thanks to @nohtora for the method, I decided to write up a short post detailing how to use Calibre e-reader to read a side-by-side English translation from the Polish text.
This post is dated 12/02/2024 - as of yet, no English translation has been scheduled, nor even announced. I am writing this because I have seen many fans say they want to read the book and are sad because they can't read Polish and don't want to wait forever for a translation and get to posting memes already. Well, me too.
So, I read it.
Because, if you are an international fan like I, and do not live in Poland, you can still purchase a copy of the new book of Rozdroże kruków ("Crossroads of Ravens") and read it... also in English.
How, you might ask? Well, by buying it and translating it yourself... or rather, not yourself, but with the assistance of... *Percival Schuttenbach voice* modern technology!
Now, when I read it, I did the foolish thing of copying and pasting literally page-by-page into Google Translate. Noels (nohtora) had a much better solution, which I will detail here.
This method is easy, free (well you gotta buy the book, but not the software) and accessible (available on Mac, PC, Linux). If you have access to a computer and are OK with reading from screens, I recommend this.
In total, it took me about 10 to 20 minutes to set up from scratch.
Step 1. Download Calibre, a free and open-source e-reader program. Step 2. Install the translation plugin - also free and open-source. Step 3. Purchase the e-book. Step 4. Open the e-book with the plugin, translate. Step 5. Read!
Step 1: Install your e-book reader.
Download Calibre here. It is a free and open-source e-reader program for laptops/computers (although it does not run on mobile devices). You install it like any other program on your computer (Windows, MacOS, or Linux).
Step 2: Download the translation plugin.
youtube
Use this free Calibre plugin to translate e-books.
Watch until 1:00 to install the plugin. The rest of the video you should return to later, during Step 4.
Notes of steps to install plugin: (1) Open Preferences. (2) Get plugins. (3) Get "Ebook Translator" from Author "bookfere.com"
Step 3: Buy the book.
You can purchase Rozdroże kruków online for about $8.
I purchased my copy from Legimi, which I will show you now. I didn't really poke around for other websites, it seems like Legimi had it the quickest. But other sites will have this ebook eventually, so don't feel pressured to get it from Legimi, specifically. I just wanted to include a "how to purchase" step in this guide because (1) it's a direct link to get it (2) in case people felt anxious about navigating a UI they can't read.
This is what the page for Rozdroże kruków looks like. As you can see, it is currently 34.99 zł, or: $8.57 US, $13.21 Aus, £6.77, or €8.15.
For me, it was $8.49 after foreign transaction fees. (I paid through PayPal).
But before you buy anything, you first need to create an account.
From the homepage, click the yellow button, "Zarejestruj się", "Sign up".
Put your username, email address, password, and confirm password. Check the first box to accept the terms of service. Don't check the second box unless you want their newsletter.
I kind of... already bought the book, so I can't buy it again on this account. I have selected a couple of other books for demonstration purposes. Same process.
Select the "ebook" tab, the right one on the ribbon (underlined in green), to buy the singular book and not a subscription. Then select the yellow button, "Dodaj do koszyka", or "Add to cart".
After adding to your cart, click the yellow button to go to your cart and checkout.
Check to accept the digital distribution agreement.
You can then pay with your credit card or PayPal. (From top to bottom, left to right: "First and last name on card" "Credit card number" "Expiration date" "Security code").
Don't worry that it says you will pay in złoty, it will be converted. There may be a foreign transaction fee depending on your bank, but it is typically small (around 3%). If you are only buying an $8 book, that will not be much.
From here, you are going to want to click the WHITE button: "Przejdź do półki", "Go to shelf". (The green button is to download their application, which we're not gonna do for this).
If you skip this on accident, just go to your profile in the top right corner and click "Półka", "Shelf", to see the books on your account.
You will see it in your shelf. Click on it.
Click the yellow button "EPUB" to download it as a .epub format. Save to your Downloads or where-ever is convenient.
Step 4: Open the book in Calibre.
Refer back to the video from Step 2 for this section and watch the part on how to use the plugin. I will add my example here, too.
Open Calibre. Click "Add Book" at the top of the ribbon. Locate rozdroze-krukow.epub from where you saved it. It will be copied to your Calibre library.
Before starting the translation, make sure to adjust settings in the Translate Book option (sometimes hidden in the ribbon as you can see in my screenshot - just click the kebab menu on the right to bring it up) to export the file the way you would like it to be formatted. I also recommend checking the box in "General" to allow it to merge paragraphs, Google Translate tends to work better when it has more context.
Select Translate Book as shown in the video. Translate into English (or - hey - language of your choice! Sky's the limit). You can also use different translation programs if you'd like, the default is Google.
You should select "Output" at the top right after this is complete.
It will create a separate epub in your library, tagged as "Translation."
Step 5: Read it and have fun! It's a fun read!
I set up my formatting this way because I want to read a Polish paragraph, then an English paragraph, but you can also set it up to be side-by-side (left page in Polish, right page in English), or even hide the original text if you're not interested and just want the translation.
The days of manually copying-pasting into Google translate are over! Thanks again to Noels for sharing this method in the Discord.
Now, this translation will NOT be 100% perfect - this is a Sapkowski novel after all; humans have difficult translating him, and this is only a machine. I wrote a Reddit post about some caveats to this desperate method of translation, and some silliness I specifically encountered with this book (light spoilers, I mention a couple of characters and settings, but no plot points).
My rule of thumb for when the translation is weird: Pay attention to the context. It is usually not too hard to figure out what the translation meant. If you have real trouble understanding it, or are just curious, Google the Polish phrase that it seems to be hitching on. Make use of Reverso Context, Reddit (r/learnpolish), and Polish learning forums.
Oh, and make sure to watch out for "grasshoppers" ;)
Finally, I recommend you also support the official English translation when it does come out; if not to compare translations, to show Orbit-Gollancz that English readers do want more translations (and ideally we'd like them sooner rather than later).
Good luck on the path ~ Powodzenia na szlaku ~

Create a Kickass Email Campaign That Converts
Hey there! Ready to leverage the power of email marketing? Let's dive into creating successful email campaigns that will wow your subscribers and drive results! 📧✨
1️⃣ First things first, let's talk about segmenting your email list. Not all subscribers are the same, so it's crucial to tailor your content to their interests and behaviors. This will increase engagement and conversion rates.
2️⃣ Personalization is key! Did you know that using a subscriber's name in the subject line and throughout the email can significantly boost open and click-through rates? It's all about making that connection! 📈
3️⃣ Mobile optimization is a game-changer. In fact, studies have shown that emails that are optimized for mobile devices can see open rates as much as 24% higher than emails that are not. 🔥
4️⃣ A/B testing is your secret weapon. Test different subject lines, calls-to-action, and content to see what resonates best with your audience. This will help you optimize your emails for maximum impact. It's all about finding that sweet spot! 🔍
5️⃣ Last but not least, always provide value to your subscribers. Whether it's a discount, exclusive content, or useful information, make sure your emails are worth opening. Building trust and loyalty is key to long-term success. 💪

I made a mailing list! finally!
you can sign up here: https://acorviart.bigcartel.com/newsletter
note that it's a double opt-in system to prevent spam, so you'll need to check your email (check spam folder too) for an opt-in email to hit confirm and fully sign up
my only plan is to use this mailing list for shop drops and to send out compilation catalogues of new items, so people don't have to go digging through my social media to see what's new. it won't be used for anything else
also forgive any issues while I figure everything out, I've never used a mailing list service before!

okokok i THINK i'll be able to get email working with SMTP2GO
i think the key might be that SMTP2GO is not an email newsletter service unto itself, they are literally just doing the email thing and what you use to create the newsletters and keep your mailing list is your own business
so since they don't even have the option to do paid newsletters directly through them, with the content hosted on their site, they are maybe less militant about double checking that you will not be describing an individual with a boner at some point in your emails
this DOES mean i will have to install YET ANOTHER PLUGIN to act as the middleman between Paid Memberships Pro and SMTP2GO but at least for right now my site is finally able to send things like password reset emails and comment alerts without going straight to spam by default

10 Ways To Support Your Favorite Small Presses
(these tips also work for supporting your favorite authors!)
Reblog reblog reblog! Reblogging their posts on tumblr is one of the best ways to help new readers find them.
Tell a friend. Word of mouth is golden. If you enjoy a book, recommend it to a friend who you think will like it too!
Leave a review. Whether you review on your social media, reading tracker app (e.g. StoryGraph, Goodreads), or on your preferred book retailer, every review helps.
Request that your local library purchase their books. And if your library has a service like Hoopla, see if their books are available for check out!
Subscribe to their newsletter. Most presses have semi-regular email newsletters where they give publication updates. By subscribing, you can keep up to date on new books and other fun stuff. (Plus, you might get cute cat pictures)
Give a one-off donation via Ko-fi, Buy Me a Coffee, etc. Everything so far has been completely free. But if you have a little cash to spare, this is a great way to show your support.
Pick up an ebook. You get to read an awesome book AND support your favorite press??? It's a win-win! Also, if your press has their own store, consider purchasing directly from them rather than through a third party.
Pick up a physical book. Not only do you get to support your fav, you also get to add a beautiful book to your bookshelf! And if you purchase directly from them, you might get some extra goodies or even a signed book!
Become a member on their Ko-fi, Patreon, etc. One of the biggest struggles with publishing books is the lack of consistent income. Providing monthly financial support can help the press stay steady during slower periods. And it probably isn't as expensive as your think! (Here at WPP, our Ko-fi membership tiers start at $1 per month)
And finally, let them know that you enjoy their work! Publishing is a long, lonely process that involves a lot of smashing keyboards and trying to decide where the commas should go. Telling them that all their hard work has paid off and that you enjoyed what they created will make their day. I guarantee it.
