Local Folklore - Los Angeles and Ventura, CA
Please visit my shop: Bells, Shells, and Spells for handmade wands, jewelry, accessories, and more!
The term “lore” is defined as an oral tradition. It’s a story, if you will, that is told at social gatherings or even through generations. One example would be the legend of the killer with the hook hand, that hangs out at Lover’s Lane. Every area has an iteration of this legend. In my area, in Los Angeles, there are several locations that this takes place. Most frequently in Mulholland Dr, but also this story has been mentioned happening in the foothills near Granada Hills. The story is largely the same, no matter where you go. Lovers are doing some hanky panky, then narrowly escape after hearing a scary noise, only to find a bloody hook in the door of the car.
A more frequent one in my area is Gravity Hill. There are a lot of these gravity hills located in California. There are two that are close to me. One is in Altadena (which is not just a dairy company!), on Loma Alta Dr., and the other is in Sylmar. The Altadena hill has a couple stories. One states that many children had died in a crash and if you park your car there, they will push you up the hill to avoid an accident. The other story is about a Native American who lost control of his carriage on the hill and ran off the bridge. Most people here believe in the children, and a coworker of mine mentioned she had been there recently and dusted her car with flour. She claims there were dozens of small hand prints in the flour once she reached the top of the hill.  The Sylmar Gravity Hill happens to be near a cemetery, which adds to the spooky vibe.
Los Angeles has many hundreds of stories about hauntings, and it would take forever to go through them all, but I will cover a few locations. Some will be well-known, and others will be from my own personal experience.
“The Beverly Hills Bermuda Triangle” is said to be one of those weird places where bad things tend to just happen. Rumors state that Howard Hughes crashed a plane here. Bugsy Siegel was murdered here. Jan Berry had a really weird car wreck here and nearly died. A publicist died here in a drive-by shooting. There are also some stories about mediums and psychics reporting lots of feelings of anger and visions of pain and suffering. No doubt this is one of the places that people don’t really want to spend much time, whether or not they believe what’s said.
The Hollywood Wax Museum is said to have a mystery woman praying in front of the representation of The Last Supper first thing in the morning. The say she never appears on camera, and when security approaches her, she disappears.
Birmingham High School (my high school!) was super haunted. It was a WWII hospital, where thousands of soldiers died from things like gangrene. In 1953 it became a high school, and it’s said there are still underground bunkers. There are so many ghost sightings that I’ve heard stories of, and I’ve experienced one myself. People have heard banging coming from empty rooms. One of my friends hear the sound of gurneys being pushed down hallways near the quad. I was in the old gym alone, and hear the sounds of people playing basketball (shoes squeaking and the ball being dribbled), but I was physically on the court and no one was there.
Aside from the hauntings, there are also mentions of several monsters:
Elizabeth Lake in Palmdale was said to have been created by The Devil himself, who put one of his pets inside it. The monster that lived in this lake was said to have been over 50 feet tall, have bat wings, the neck of a giraffe, the head of a bulldog, six legs, and smell horrible. They also say that, if you swim deep enough, there’s a cave that will leave you straight to the underworld. The lake lies on the San Andreas fault, so that wouldn’t be much of a surprise! Miguel Leonis, the King of Calabasas, chased the beast away in the late 1800s. It hasn’t been spotted since 1880, but there were a bunch of sightings and events that happened along that lake before that point.
“The first sighting was by a Spaniard Don Pedro Carillo in the 1830's. He built a ranch on the shores of the lake, but one day a fire of unknown origin burnt every single structure down all in a single night. In the 1850's, American settlers tried to establish themselves near the lake, but screams at night, unnatural noises, visions, and other experiences that they would not relate drove them away from the fertile soils.
Then came Don Chico Lopez and Don Chico Vasquez. He established an entire ranch along the lake and for several months everything was fine. The monster did not show itself. Then the workers reported livestock and animals disappearing. This was followed by a giant winged shadow passing over the house each and every night. Soon the residents had multiple sightings of the beast. Bullets reportedly bounced off the creature's hide. As ranch hands quit, and animals kept disappearing, the owners were forced to sell. The land was eventually sold and the ranch abandoned.
Miguel Leonis purchased the ranch next. Leonis was a Basque immigrant, a large and burly man who controlled a large amount of land throughout Southern California. He ruled over it like a dictator, and squatters were often severely dealt with through either lawsuits or armed force.
Several months after he purchased the ranch on Elizabeth Lake, the creature began eating his animals as well. But Leonis would not have it. He lay in wait for the beast and then savagely attacked it when it emerged at night. As bullets bounced off its tough hide, he engaged it closer, beating it with his rifle butt across the nose and then punching it in the eye. So taken back by the ferocity of the attack, that the creature retreated back to the lake, and there lay resting, healing its injured eye. Eventually, it fled from the lake heading east towards Arizona.
A depiction of what the original Thunderbird Photograph may have looked like. Not the original!
The tale, however, doesn't quite end there. The spawn of the Devil that inhabited Elizabeth Lake has also been linked to the area around Tombstone and the Thunderbird Photograph. The Thunderbird Photograph is a possible picture taken a very long time ago presumably in early 1890 of several cowboys and ranchers holding up what appears to be a pterodactyl. The beast was apparently seen flying in the area, and was lured by some ranchers into a trap in the Huachuca Mountains, west of Tombstone, where they killed the creature. Some stories link the monster of Elizabeth Lake to the monster in the old picture of the pterodactyl, stating that they are the same creature. The picture, of course, also has several stories surrounding it. Scholars aren't even sure if such a picture even exists let alone if it is authentic. The picture apparently appeared in the newspaper: the Tombstone Epitaph and showed several cowboys and ranchers in front of a dead pterodactyl who's wings were pinned to the wall of a barn. The picture soon disappeared.
Regardless of if the creature fled to Arizona, and regardless of if it was killed west of Tombstone, since the day that Leonis beat up the Devil's pet, Elizabeth Lake has mostly been quiet. Speculation has long existed on if the monster did exist. Additionally if it did not exist, no one can draw a conclusion as to why several Spanish dons, American squatters, and wild west ranchers would go to such lengths to avoid such a fertile area.
If the Tombstone story is to be believed, the monster outlived its attacker, Miguel Leonis, by only one year. Leonis eventually died in a strange wagon accident in 1889. As he wasn't very well liked, rumors of his murder spread afterwards. His and his wife's ghost still haunt the Leonis Adobe in Calabasas.”

Elsie in Lake Elsinore is seen at least once every decade since the 1880s. She’s said to be a cross between a plesiosaur and a sea serpent. Lore about Elsie has been taught out to school children, has made debuts on local ads and is the town’s unofficial mascot. In the 1990’s they made a fiberglass Elsie to put up at the lake.
Tumblr media
The Sea Monster of San Clemente has been plaguing the area between San Clemente and Catalina island since the 1900s. It’s said that sea serpents roam the coast of California, but this one seems to stay right in that little area.
The Billiwhack Monster is a tall, muscular, apelike humanoid with long claws, gray hair, and ram-like horns on the top of its head lurks around the area of Santa Paula in Ventura County. As the stories go, it mostly torments the high schoolers from Santa Paula High School by throwing 50lb rocks at their cars, pounding the hoods of their cars, leaving dents.
The story of Char Man has gone back into the mid 1900s, and takes place off Creek Road in Ojai, Ca. There are a few stories of how it happened -- many have to do with someone being burned alive in the 1948 fire (a father, a husband, or a fireman).
Char Man is said to haunt the area of Creek Road, and if you yell out “HELP ME” along the bridge, an incensed Char Man will come out of the woods and attack you.
Char Man has gained so much notoriety that he even has a hot sauce named after him.
Tumblr media
There are hundreds more stories that are passed around my area, but I figure this is enough for now. If you want more, let me know. I can offer you many spooky tales to haunt your nights!
