The thing is, even though many of SJM’s couples are mates, none of them discovered the bond right away. They fell in love and THEN they discovered it. They didn���t fall in love with each other because of it.

In addition to that, none of the mated characters act like they are bound to each other by the bond. They know they can leave the relationship at any time. Even, Rhysand who is married to his mate asks her if she is sure she wants a tattoo of his insignia because it can’t be removed and he wants her to know in case she ever decides to leave him.

Considering their build up along the previous books, and their now confirmed feelings for each other, Elain ending up with the mate she doesn’t want, or Azriel finding a mate and forgetting the girl he would beg on his knees for…is unlikely.

Based on previous character dynamics, SJM is a slow-burn trope kind of girl, before she is a fated mates kind of girl. And the only thing slowly burning between Elain and her mate is the fireplace in the background as they sit in silence lol.
