It’s funny how you don’t really think about your own language, like sometimes there are words and idioms that are obvious only as long as you don’t think about them.

Like, okay, some medical lingo for example. A lot of fancy scientific words in Finnish are basically just English words, but written and pronounced in a Finnish way that are fairly easy to flip over, and then there’s times when you could say stuff like “I have a life mouse in my eye” and realize that not everything is quite as translatable in the literal sense…

mulla on jonkin aikaa ollut oikean käden etusormi tehnyt kipeää elohiiren takia jonka takia se nykii ja sätkii vaikka en oo tietääkseni stressaantunut mistään mutta tää on ollut nyt muutaman päivän ajan ja nyt se alkaa ottaa päähän kun tietokoneen hiiren käyttäminen tuntuu häijyltä :(

oh, you meant live mouse. Was trying to figure out what a life mouse was.

No no, life mouse, it uses the noun version of the word life. Live mouse would be elävä hiiri.

Elohiiri = myokymia, but hiiri = mouse, while elo = life, the act of living (or an old word for crop).

There’s possibly a lot more going on in the historical etymology side of the word, but I was amused by how it doesn’t make sense when you start thinking about it.

en osaa auttaa mut tää postaus on varmaan turvallinen paikka jakaa oma kokemus viime viikolta, kun pötköttelin vatsallani sängyssä ja mun pakarassa oli elohiiri. se lähinnä nauratti. myöhemmin samana päivänä elohiiri eksyi myös peukaloon moneksi tunniksi mikä oli vähän rasittavampaa.
