In searching for the kid that Dick mentioned to Cole Kingseed in this post I went through the roster for Meehan's plane and looked at all the PFC and Privates and tried to come up with who Dick Winter's was talking about.

In doing so I discovered PFC Elmer Telstad had survived two house fires only to die in a plane that went down in flames.

This guy. In 1930 he was in the basement of his burning home and rescued by a neighbor. In 1935 his little brother Palmer was playing with matches and set the family home on fire, while Elmer and his brother Ralph played outside, killing himself and grandma. In 1937 his sister died in a car accident after being out with her brother in law at midnight and her husband said he was getting a divorce anyhow. (Lucy's story deserves it own post. )
