A Most /un/Welcome Return...
**spoilers**
This was originally titled in the opposite direction, reflecting the calm homecoming of returning to books by a reliably enjoyable writer.
But, I'm sorry, it's 10 days since the US election and while I'm going an excellent job of hiding from that reality, can I just take this moment to say: Seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeriously? *sad, sad face*
One of those moments when I treasure being served up X/ex-twitter in the form of people I in fact want to hear from (interrupted by a harmless story about mistaken identities and death metal concerts):
Tumblr media
And it gives me fresh energy for the subject matter of MRK's Lady Astronaut books - which include two of my absolutely favourite things, aka an alternative history/timeline (so much fun! so much that could happen! yikes, and some of it actually does!) and SPACE.
These are GREAT books for conveying the message that what we do when we seemed to be facing impossible odds is - we carry on. We try. We do what we can. The darkness moves to engulf us and in whatever ways come to hand, small or large, we push back.
Specifically, in MRK's world, she's written a post-disaster narrative set among survivors of an extinction-level meteor strike. I don't think I'd even call this cosy catastrophe, though, because the world that's left behind, although it functions in a reasonably recognisable way for 1950s America, is pretty unmistakably dystopian. The consequences are many and multiple. But there's also gin, cake, s*x and friendship. And petty rivalries. Actual life, persisting regardless.
What I was *PLANNING* to say was that these are a great example of books I will happily read over and over again, that are partly/mostly in the terrain of things I'd write about myself, but are NOT the kind of book I'm aspiring to write. That's because they are i) hard science faithful in a way that feels frankly beyond my appetite and energy and ii) overtly identity-politics political, in ways I support but again don't think I could replicate
MRK does a superbly impressive job on conjuring the feeling of being in Real Space Race conditions - the checklists, the jargon, the reality of what it feels like for Real Astronauts and the things they really need to pay attention to. She's checking her material with Real Space People so full snaps for doing the homework. And doing it well.
Comes over to me as very 13 Minutes to the Moon in tone:
The other thing she puts right at the centre of the story is the question of race relations, both inside the space programme and between the space programme and Everyone Else, left behind.
The main terrorist opposition is effectively living out the logic of Whitey On the Moon and gets a sympathetic hearing from the main character, and a predictably unsympathetic response from the holders of power within the framework of the Lady Astronaut world:
youtube
That's on me (the lack of attention to the detail of the hard science and the lack of desire for a political fight) but there's maybe also something subtle and interesting - and perhaps difficult and perhaps self-defeating - about learning to recognise, in order to try to write, PRECISELY the story that fits your own personality and interests.
[I have a high level of confidence, though, that this is terrible, terrible advice for anyone who wants to have an actual published/publishing career, where the correct version of the advice needs to be - write that version of your own preferred story, but in such a way that it's likely to chime for other readers and - if you have the alchemical touch, which I certainly don't - shaped for the zeitgeist. I don't expect to be published commercially but I AM expecting myself to finish writing my Raynovia story and to complete it in a way that absolutely works as a testament to the kind of stories and writing *I want* to leave as - temporary - legacy in my corner of the internet / London.]

moon day books (books for 7/20/24)
Moon Day* is coming up, and that sounds like as good an excuse as any for talking about some books
Here's my list, rationale is below the jump
The Lady Astronaut series by Mary Robinette Kowal
by Becky Chambers, Record of a Spaceborn Few (or The Galaxy, and the Ground Within. Or Psalm for the Wild-Built)
The Last Hero by Terry Pratchett
So You Want to be a Wizard by Diane Duane
The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin
Martha Wells's Murderbot Diaries series
*Moon Day is the anniversary of the first Moon Landing, July 20 :) I'm aware it's not really a holiday but I love the idea
The Lady Astronaut series by Mary Robinette Kowal This is a really excellent series. It's an alternative history of space travel. It has lots of women, and there are characters of colors (although they're thus far limited to the supporting cast). They're exciting, emotional, and gripping. I loved these books.
SUMMARY: A meteor decimates the U.S. government and paves the way for a climate cataclysm that will eventually render the earth inhospitable to humanity. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated timeline in the earth’s efforts to colonize space, as well as an unprecedented opportunity for a much larger share of humanity to take part. One of these new entrants in the space race is Elma York, whose experience as a WASP pilot and mathematician earns her a place in the International Aerospace Coalition’s attempts to put man on the moon. But with so many skilled and experienced women pilots and scientists involved with the program, it doesn’t take long before Elma begins to wonder why they can’t go into space, too—aside from some pesky barriers like thousands of years of history and a host of expectations about the proper place of the fairer sex. And yet, Elma’s drive to become the first Lady Astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions may not stand a chance.
2. One of Becky Chamber's books, probably Record of a Spaceborn Few or perhaps the Galaxy, and the Ground Within.
These are both standalone set in the same series. Record of a Spaceborn Few follows multiple characters whose lives intersect but are not especially intertwined. All these characters live on or are visiting the Human Fleet, which is the uh the… vessels that humans left the Earth on, as we jettisoned ourselves into space? I mentioned this one a little while back in conjunction with the waves hands Ship of Theseus and museology thing. The Galaxy, and the Ground Within like… doesn't have humans in it? It's basically a book-long bottle episodes, and it has themes of what is the significance art, what does it mean to negotiate one's identity as an individual and with respect to one's group identity. (By this I mostly mean like. the characters are all nonhuman alien species, and several of them negotiate their relationship between being a "typical" whatever vs being themselves.) One thing I love about Becky Chambers's books is that the aliens actually feel alien to me. They don't just feel like a different kind of human, they feel like they have meaningfully different biology and this affects their worldview.
Also on my Becky Chambers thoughts is her book Psalm for the Wild Built. I love how she spins the setting, presenting a very rosy concept of how humans could renegotiate our use of the planet we live on. One of the appeals of the Lady Astronaut series (above) is the realism. For the Psalm for the Wild Built, it's kind of the opposite; I love the… almost courage of imagining "what if we collectively did do better? What might that look like?" In a world where cynicism seems like a pragmatic form of self-protection, this sort of imagining almost seems brave.
3. For a slightly off the wall book idea, how about Sir Terry Pratchett's The Last Hero?
I love this book, it's a relatively quick read due to its format. The art is gorgeous. The story is wry and warm in that special Discworld way, and altitude is a factor in the story :) So that's the moon connection.
Cohen the Barbarian. He's been a legend in his own lifetime. He can remember the good old days of high adventure, when being a Hero meant one didn't have to worry about aching backs and lawyers and civilization. But these days, he can't always remember just where he put his teeth… So now, with his ancient (yet still trusty) sword and new walking stick in hand, Cohen gathers a group of his old -- very old -- friends to embark on one final quest. He's going to climb the highest mountain of Discworld and meet the gods. It's time the Last Hero in the world returns what the first hero stole. Trouble is, that'll mean the end of the world, if no one stops him in time.
4. As a YA lover, I have to include a shout-out for So You Want to be a Wizard by Diane Duane. This is the first of the Young Wizards series, which I love, and the characters (and I believe Ms Duane) LOVE the moon. It's really heartwarming, it reminds me of those videos of the astronaut talking about what going to the moon means to him.
Nita Callahan is at the end of her rope because of the bullies who've been hounding her at school… until she discovers a mysterious library book that promises her the chance to become a wizard. But she has no idea of the difference that taking the Wizard's Oath is going to make in her life. Shortly, in company with fellow beginner-wizard Kit Rodriguez, Nita's catapulted into what will be the adventure of a lifetime—if she and Kit can both live through it. For every wizard's career starts with an Ordeal in which he or she must challenge the one power in the universe that hates wizardry more than anything else: the Lone Power that invented death and turned it loose in the worlds. Plunged into a dark and deadly alternate New York full of the Lone One's creatures, Kit and Nita must venture into the very heart of darkness to find the stolen, legendary Book of Night with Moon. Only with the dangerous power of the wizardly Book do they have a chance to save not just their own lives, but their world…
5. Not to be cheeky, but if that's too wholesome, perhaps The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin will hit the spot? :D
This is the way the world ends. Again. Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. Meanwhile, mighty Sanze -- the world-spanning empire whose innovations have been civilization's bedrock for a thousand years -- collapses as most of its citizens are murdered to serve a madman's vengeance. And worst of all, across the heart of the vast continent known as the Stillness, a great red rift has been torn into the heart of the earth, spewing ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries. Now Essun must pursue the wreckage of her family through a deadly, dying land. Without sunlight, clean water, or arable land, and with limited stockpiles of supplies, there will be war all across the Stillness: a battle royale of nations not for power or territory, but simply for the basic resources necessary to get through the long dark night. Essun does not care if the world falls apart around her. She'll break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.
6. Final one. Why not use Moon Day as an excuse to reread Martha Well's Murderbot Diaries books? (Paper-thin excuse: MB's favorite TV show is… sanctuary moon!)
In a corporate-dominated space-faring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. For their own safety, exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists is conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid--a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, Murderbot wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is, but when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and Murderbot to get to the truth.
[I said I wasn't going to add Andy Weir's The Martian because it's a gimme, but I'm a liar! I also love The Martian. Yes I know it's on Mars, not the moon, but! Humans! In! Spaaaaace!]
If you made it this far, what do you think? What books does "moon day" make you think of? Which books are on YOUR list?

JOMP BPC - 25th November - Feminist Story
It addresses sexism and racism in the early US space programme, which we experience through Elma York, the clever, competent, and highly anxious protagonist. It's a really engaging story about a global disaster, early space flight, and hope for the future, and I've just seen that there are sequels - which I didn't know about. This book does end a little abruptly which makes sense now I know there's a whole series :-)

O bir Afrikalı’ydı,
Kongo'lu bir gençti.
Boyu 1.49,
46 kiloydu..
23 yaşında, evli, bir çocukluydu.
Güler yüzlü, hayat dolu bir insandı.
Adı Oto Benga’ydı..
Kendi dilinde manasi “Dost” demekti.
New York Bronx Hayvanat Bahçesi’nde o gün görülmemiş bir kalabalık vardı. Hayvanat Bahçesi hasılat rekoru kırıyordu. Nedeni New York Times Gazetesi’nde çıkan bir haberdi.

...........
He was an African,
He was a young man from Congo.
His height is 1.49,
It was 46 kilos.
He was 23 years old, married, with one child.
He was a smiling and lively person.
His name was Oto Benga.
In his native language, it meant "Friend".
One day they caught him fishing in the river. The catcher was the American Samuel P. Verner. He was chained around his neck and feet. They just left their hands free to carry the load.
They walked for hours under the whips. Then he was put in the engine compartment of a ship with dozens of his kinsmen. After weeks of travel in total darkness, he met the light of day in New York. They separated him from his kin and put him in a cage. They were imprisoned in a warehouse. He was held there for days. They threw a dry loaf in front of him every day. The date was September 9, 1906.
Oto Benga did not know that this creature that set foot on the American continent and called 'human' was so cruel, so cruel, so cruel. In his homeland, even lions, hungry crocodiles, and predators were not so wild.
There was an unprecedented crowd that day at the New York Bronx Zoo. The Zoo was breaking records. The reason was an article in the New York Times Newspaper. It read like this. “The wild man shares a cage with the monkeys in the Bronx. together with the first ancestors of man. The caregiver sometimes lets it loose. It can be visited in the afternoons throughout September.” He added a note to the newspaper article. "Although some groups reacted to this event, scientists are of the opinion that Benga cannot be considered as a human."
They first washed Oto Benga with a hose. Then they put them in a large cage with trees in the zoo. They gave him a baby orangutan named Dohong. Thousands of people watched him curiously as the journalists took their pictures. Oto Benga also has them. He had a strange expression on his face. Sadness and hatred. The baby orangutan hugged him tightly in fear.
They posed for hours every day. Within a week, the number of visitors exceeded 250 thousand. Some were throwing bones into the cage. When Oto Benga got angry and showed his fangs, they were chanting "Cannibal, cannibal" (Cannibal cannibal). “Benga is a cannibal,” the newspapers wrote.
The people of New York, most of whom are Christians, did not speak out against this persecution of Oto Benga. Neither politicians, nor scientists, nor journalists, nor intellectuals. Hearts were deaf. The Bronx Zoo has released Auto Benga. They wore pants and jackets. They did legwork. The date was March 20, 1916.
Oto Benga, who was thousands of kilometers away from his wife, children and relatives, committed suicide by shooting himself in the heart with a stolen gun. Because death was freedom for him. He was only 32 when he died. Over time, the Bronx Zoo deleted all records related to Auto Benga. But newspaper reports and photographs could not hide the truth. When the reactions increased, the zoo officials said, "It is done all over the world, why shouldn't we do it?" they said..
What they said was true. In those years, the same brutality was exhibited in many parts of Europe, which was called civilized, in metropolitan cities such as London, Paris, Berlin, Brussels, Stuttgard, Barcelona, Milan, Hamburg, people smuggled out of Africa in cages were exhibited, it was other people's entertainment. This brutality became such a source of income that the "Zoos" were replaced by "Human Gardens". Until the 1960s, thousands of people were displayed as animals in cages. His screams made the sky and earth groan. But modern people. was blind and deaf.
Today, the scoundrels who are lecturing the world on CONTEMPORARY, CIVILIZATION and HUMAN RIGHTS, THEY ARE THEY THINGS WHO SELL PEOPLE AS SLAVE IN THE YEARS, AND TODAY TAKE A BOM ON IRAQ AND SYRIANS FOR OIL FOR OIL...
How well Mehmet Akif said, "CIVILIZATION IS THE ONE TOO LEFT MONSTER"
Westerners owe today's pompous life to the blood of the oppressed, to the blood of the oppressed, to the AFRICAN CHILDREN they stole the GOLD and DIAMOND mines, killed them with hunger, made them slaves and sold them...
Quotation
Good thing there is hell and long live hell for the oppressors...

I’m sorry but I’m NOT over “a New York clothing store was expanding its basement and found the remains of the well where Elma Sands was found murdered in the year 1800 which led to a murder trial that is historically significant both for being the first US murder trial for which we have a formal record and because two of the three attorneys representing the accused were Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr
And they were like
Well
We really do want our store to be bigger but we also don’t want to destroy this priceless piece of history
So the old-ass well is just IN THEIR STORE!!!! IT’S JUST IN THE MIDDLE OF THEIR CLOTHING STORE SURROUNDED BY CLOTHES BECAUSE IT’S A CLOTHING STORE. THE WELL THAT ELMA SANDS’ MURDERER DUMPED HER BODY INTO. THAT WELL. IN THEIR STORE

The novel "The Fated Sky" by Mary Robinette Kowal was published for the first time in 2018. It's the second novel in the Lady Astronaut series and follows "The Calculating Stars".
Elma York serves on the route between the Earth and the Moon but during a return to Earth the spacecraft ends up off course. She realizes that things on the planet are complicated when a group of armed people kidnaps the crew. Those are Earth Firsters.
That experience has a positive outcome but Elma still finds herself in the midst of controversy when the first mission to Mars is set up. She's now known as the Lady Astronaut and is very often used as the face of the space program in public relations.

Apple Vision Pro kulaklığı takan bir şahıs. — Elma/DosyaApple Vision Pro kulaklığa 3.500 dolar ödeyen tüketiciler, migren ağrısı, hareket bulantısı ve göz yorgunluğuna yol açtığını söyledikleri için cihazları aslına bakarsan iade ediyor.Yenilikçi gözlükler 2 Şubat'ta halka sunulmadan ilkin, ön sipariş döneminde 200.000'den fazla çift satıldı. New York Postası. Sadece bazı yakıcı destekçiler Vision Pro'nun BT sektörünü tamamen değiştireceğini iddia etse de, bazı hoşnutsuz alıcılar kendilerininkini aslına bakarsan Apple Store'a iade etti.Bazıları dayanılmaz baş ağrıları yaşadıkları için cihazları iade etti.Bir alan kişi Pazartesi günü Reddit'te "Benimkini bugün iade ettim" diye yazdı. “Aşırı baş ağrıları (on senelerdir ilk kez). giyemiyorum [them] aşırı hastalık duymadan 10 dakikadan fazla.
