ELLISON ONIZUKA

Space Shuttle Challenger disaster
Ellison Onizuka was an American astronaut, engineer, and US Air Force flight test engineer. He flew into space with the Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-51-C. He was the first Asian American and first Japanese person to reach space.
Onizuka was born in Kealakekua, Hawaii to Japanese American parents. Growing up he was involved in the Boy Scouts in America. He was married in 1969 and had two children.
Onizuka was one of the crew members on the Challengers disaster as lieutenant colonel. A special member on-board was school teacher Christa McAuliffe who was selected out of thousands to be part of the crew. The shuttle took off from Kennedy Space Center at 11:38 am on 28 January. The shuttle was destroyed and all seven crew members were killed. An investigation of the recovered cockpit revealed that three crew members Air Packs were activated, one of those belonged to Onizuka. Onizuka was possibly still alive after the cockpit separated from the main vehicle a minute after lift-off. Pilot Michael Smith saw the vapour/fire and said, ‘Uh oh’, those still alive were aware that something was wrong; he attempted to restore power to the shuttle by toggling switches which made no difference. The cabin dropped down into the ocean after two minutes, which would have killed anybody who was still alive. The disaster happened due to a failure of an O-ring seal on the starboard solid rocket booster due to the cold temperature.
Onizuka was buried in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Rob Remembers...The Challenger Explosion
38 years ago today I was in the sixth grade. I came home for lunch that day, just as I had most of the days during the school year. After all, my home was less than two blocks from my school. Those really no particular reason why I chose to come home for lunch. I ate the same things at home that I would’ve eaten if I had packed my lunch in a brown paper bag. If anything, coming home for lunch,…

"An unusual almost-straight-on view of the Space Shuttle Discovery as its main landing gear touches down on the Shuttle landing facility runway at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Aboard the spacecraft for the STS-51C mission were astronauts Thomas K. (Ken) Mattingly II, Loren J. Shriver, James F. Buchli and Ellison S. Onizuka of NASA; and payload specialist Gary E. Payton of the USAF."

Days 6 and 7
Okay, so for those of you following along at home, I'm sorry to say that I have fallen behind in my adventure updates!
Day 6 was a fairly quiet one - last day of the Comic Con, and my fandom friends mostly had tickets for today (but no spare), so I had a quiet morning before meeting up with one of said friends when she was done re-visiting the dealers she wanted to return to.
We walked along the foreshore, had a lazy lunch watching the ducks and went back to the houseboat to wait for the others to return.
Tumblr media
She forced me (not really - she asked me) to show her some TAG episodes. She was extremely impressed, particularly with the detail of the sets, but also with the show as a whole.
The day ended with a final Con night dinner for the whole fandom gang out in La Mesa (where our organiser lives). Then it was time to say goodbyes as members of the group would be flying out to their home towns across the US the following day.
Day 7 was a road trip to LA!
This was another surprise sprung on me last minute by the fandom friends. Four of us took the 2 hour trip up the freeway to Los Angeles.
First stop was a surprise for one of our party who is a big fan of the show Emergency.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lot of the location shots for the show, including every time the vehicles left the station, were filmed here.
We were all content to just take a few pictures of the outside, but one of the firefighters who works here heard/saw us and invited us in for a tour! (This seems to happen a lot! And the station is not busy as a general rule.)
The place has barely changed since the '70's when the show was being filmed, so it was actually very cool to wander through and see things I recognised from watching the show as a kid. We even signed the visitors book.
Next stop was the California Science Center in Exhibition Park so one of our party could see the space shuttle Endeavor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was very cool to see it up close! And there were capsules from the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions on display (amongst many other interesting things!) too.
Our next stop was Little Tokyo for our remaining 2 road trippers to explore the stores there looking for anime related merch, memorabilia, soundtracks and treasures. There were a few interesting finds made but not much deemed worthy of purchase.
I did spy a Voltron figure - one with the 5 lions that join together - which I've wanted to get hold of for ages. But at US$699 I decided it was going to stay up on that high shelf!
Little Tokyo also hosts the memorial to Colonel Ellison Onizuka.
Tumblr media
Next stop, lunch! The others decided I needed to try an In-N-Out burger. Not bad. Definitely on the high end of the quality scale for cheap and cheerful!
We drove through Griffith Park, and down palm tree lined streets in Beverly Hills before a stop around dusk to check out the neon lights in Little China. Dinner was fish tacos at Rubios, then began the long drive back to San Diego.
Made it back to my hotel before midnight, but not by much!

“NASA’s Day of Remembrance reflects not just those lost in pursuit of the stars – but all those who carry on the mission of human space exploration in their memory,” Singer said. “We continue to expand the frontiers of science and discovery to honor the men and women of Apollo 1 and space shuttles Challenger and Columbia.”
NASA’s annual commemoration honors Apollo 1 astronauts Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Ed White Jr., and Roger Chaffee, lost during launch testing on Jan. 27, 1967; space shuttle Challenger astronauts Francis "Dick" Scobee, Michael Smith, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe, lost on takeoff on Jan. 28, 1986; and space shuttle Columbia astronauts Rick Husband, William McCool, Michael Anderson, David Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon, lost during post-mission reentry on Feb. 1, 2003. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the loss of the Columbia crew.

What happened in The Newsreaderland 37 years ago today?
Helen, Dale and Noelene nailed their breaking broadcast on the whim, Helen got her position back and an office alliance was beautifully formed. Certainly, the 29th January 1986 was a historic and personal day to remember for our Newsreader crew.
Tumblr media
It has also been 37 years today (29th January in Australian time, 28th January in American time) since the Challenger Disaster happened. These poor astronauts and their loved ones! The footage is still devastating to watch, and our show depicted it poignantly.
We also remember these seven today, and their bravery for scientific greatness. Ellison Onizuka. Christa McAuliffe. Gregory Jarvis. Judith Resnik. Michael J. Smith. Francis "Dick" Scobee. Ronald McNair.
Here is a real Australian news broadcast from the day of the Challenger Disaster - an ABC news bulletin from Brisbane, with newsreaders Ron Markland and Janet Wilson, and a cross to newsreader for the Australian ABC in the US; Richard Palfreyman. I find it interesting that in our show, Geoff accused Helen of being too emotional on air, but the newsreaders in this real bulletin (especially Palfreyman) also showed their sadness on air too. It’s very emotional how Palfreyman read out the list of victims and the families they were going to leave behind. Made me tear up, that’s for sure.

I had lunch today with my friend in Little Tokyo. We always rendez-vous at Weller Court. I was early and I had my portable sketching package with me. So, there was this scene I had always wanted to sketch. The place was filled with activities, young people in Cosplay outfits, and Japanese Anime music all around. I was transported back to a morning over Akihabara electronic town in Tokyo. Being able to sketch anywhere any time makes one the owner of space and time altogether.

The first Mongolian to reach space was Jügderdemidiin Gürragchaa, who flew on a Soviet Soyuz mission in 1981. He was the 2nd Asian person to reach space, the first being Pham Tuan, a Vietnamese air force colonel who flew on an earlier Soyuz mission. The third Asian in space, and the first Asian-American and person of Japanese descent to do so, was Ellison Onizuka, who tragically perished in the Challenger explosion.

It's comforting to note in every disaster, there are always people who's final thoughts or actions, where to help others.
Vince Coleman who died in the Halifax explosion because he remained at his telegraph station to warn a passenger train to stop.
The 35 engineers on the Titanic who kept the power on for as long as possible, aiding evacuations and the distress call.
Benjamin Keefe Clark, a chef working in the world trade center, who stayed in the building to help others, including his staff evacuate.
Astronaut Mike Smith's emergency air pack was activated from behind sometime after the Space shuttle Challenger broke up. Meaning either Judith Resnik or Ellison Onizuka used their last moment of useful consciousness to try and help a fellow crew member. That's humanity. No matter how evil people can be, no matter how cruel the world can get. The spirit of humanity and what it means to be a human, will always be with our capacity for love, and altruism.
A truly advanced civilization is denoted not by power, but by empathy.

If I have to hear one more word about how "diverse" the still mostly white/Anglo astronaut corps is, Imma pop.
No, the corps in the Apollo days was not remotely reflective of the population, and the new SLS program will send groups who previously had no "lunar landing representation" to the moon. BUT the first American woman in space was in a long-term domestic partnership with another woman. We have had black astronauts of both sexes, astronauts with various Asian roots, Latino astronauts, gay astronauts. It really undercuts the trails these men and women blazed. Some of them died (Ellison Onizuka and Ronald McNair were on Challenger, Kalpana Chawla and Michael Anderson on Columbia) for their dream to see space.
It's disgusting to shove aside these brave men and women who faced the racism and sexism of decades prior because current cultural trends dictate that one must appear and hype diversity. We can celebrate a (hoped for, the SLS has yet to actually go into launch protocols without issue) return to the moon with a new generation without practically erasing the diversity of those who achieved LEO.
